INSIDE: Dodging for diabetes in New West ◗P13

Many Royal City residents have been flocking to local parks and pools to enjoy the arrival of summer weather. Sunny skies and warm temperatures have seen an influx in visits to local facilities. Since July 5, New Westminster residents have enjoyed daytime temperatures in the range of 20 degrees Celsius. The Weather Network shows plenty more sunshine in its 14-day forecast for New Westminster. The forecast is calling for highs of between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius in the next few days. While the sunshine is expected to last through Saturday, some showers are forecast Sunday to Wednesday. Not to worry sun lovers – the forecast is calling for some sunny skies on those days as well, and a return to full sun midweek next week. Despite the rising temperatures, the City of New Westminster has announced that the threat around high water and the potential for local flooding due to spring runoff has ended.

Taste of summer: Jas Gill and Wendy Leong enjoy some ice cream on the weekend at River Market along the waterfront. After a wet June throughout the province, the sunny weather arrived in the Lower Mainland just in time for some summer fun over the weekend. City set to take electric cars for a test drive New Westminster will buy an electric vehicle to help with greenhouse gas plan BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER

The City of New Westminster is buying an electric vehicle as part of its plan to reduce greenhouse gases. The city’s corporate energy and greenhouse gas emission management plan aims to reduce fleet emission by 11 per cent (from 2007 levels) by 2017. In an effort to meet those goals, the city has identified the ADVANTAGE REALTY

need to look at the feasibility of using alternatively fueled vehicles, such as electric vehicles, in the city’s fleet. Council has directed staff to buy one electric vehicle as part of the city’s vehicle replacement program, and to apply for provincial funding to support the installation of electric vehicle charging stations at city facilities. “The city is going to be looking to buy an electric vehicle in next year’s budget,” said Coun. Jonathan Cote. “We have several vehicles that need to be replaced next year.” Cote said a decision hasn’t yet been made about what vehicle in the city’s fleet

will be replaced with an electric vehicle, but one suggestion has been a “pool” vehicle that is shared by various departments and used as needed. A staff report states that purchasing an electric vehicle could cost $33,000 to $50,000. The city will be applying for provincial funds to help reduce the cost of buying the vehicle. In addition, it’s estimated that the cost of installing charging stations at three potential locations could be about $24,000. Again, the city hopes to get provincial funding to offset some of these cots. “Incorporating electric vehicles into the city’s fleet and providing initial charging

stations within the city will help to put New Westminster alongside other leading municipalities in preparing for the B.C.wide deployment of electric vehicles,” said a staff report. “These and other initiatives included in the low carbon fleet policy and city plans will advance the realization of the city emission reduction commitments.” The report noted that the goal is that having electric vehicles and charging stations in the city will inspire residents and business to switch to cleaner emission vehicles. “That would be a good opportunity to test it out and see how it worked in the vehicle fleet,” Cote said.

Fundraiser to honour New West pet

Emma the pug was surrounded by close friends and family when she passed away last week. Because Emma hated the doctor’s office, her owner, Leona Green, made arrangements for the doctor to come to her house and put the pug to sleep. “She had four of her closest doggie friends with her when she passed away – Luke, Theo, Munchie and Tiny,” Green noted. “They were oddly calm during the procedure. When the doctor said that her heart had stopped beating, I think mine did too for a sec. She was a great little dog and brought a lot of pleasure to me and others. She will be missed.” The longtime New Westminster resident is grieving the loss of her beloved pet pug, Emma, who recently had to be put to sleep. “Her spirit was willing, but her flesh was weak,” she wrote in an email to The

Record. “She stopped being able to walk a few weeks ago and everyday has been a struggle for her, so it was the right thing to do.” When Emma’s back hips gave out, Green borrowed her grandson Isaiah’s wagon and took her for walks. As her quality of life diminished, Green made the tough decision to have her put to sleep. During her life, Emma led a somewhat unconventional lifestyle for a pug; she was “married” to her partner Luke, and she was the star of several fundraisers on behalf of the Royal City Humane Society. “She has touched a lot of lives,” Green said. “I would like to let people know that she is gone – and that in lieu of flowers it would be wonderful if people could make a donation to the Royal City Humane Society in her name.” Donations can be mailed to the Royal City Humane Society at PO Box 401012, New Westminster, V3M 3J7. Alternatively, they can be dropped off at Greens and Beans Deli Café (143 East Columbia St.) or

Central City Animal Hospital (7834 Sixth St. in Burnaby) where the society has an account for animal care. “She had a birthday party a few years ago and invited all the little dogs to come,” Green noted. “About a dozen little dogs came – and because Emma didn’t need anything, they were asked to donate to the humane society. We made over $300 that day.” Emma would have celebrated her 10th birthday in September – likely with some sort of fundraiser for the Royal City Humane Society. Emma was also the calendar girl in the first Royal City Humane Society variety show fundraiser, donning various outfits for the different months of the year. In 2007, Emma wore a wedding gown when she and Green’s other pug Luke

We can talk until we’re blue in the face about legal limits and new penal-

Take responsibility for yourself, your friends, your family and for the motorists and pedestrians around you. Losing a license or paying thousands in fines may feel like a serious penalty, but it’s nothing compared to being responsible for a life.

Christy Clark mum in pipeline debate IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

DP leader Adrian Dix is noticeably frustrated by Premier Christy Clark’s steadfast refusal to take a position on the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline, and it’s not hard to see why. Unless there is a radical shift in public opinion, Dix will assume Clark’s job after next spring’s election. But, even as premier, he may find himself powerless to have any impact at all on the final decision on Enbridge. The joint review panel’s hearings on the pipeline proposal are scheduled to end next April, about a month before the election. A final decision on the project is expected some time next year. But the B.C. government has chosen to register as an “intervenor” in the hearing process and not as a “government participant,” which reduces any role it can play in the hearings. Interestingly, Alberta – where the proposed pipeline would originate – has registered as a “government participant” and so is able to present its arguments and positions on an

issue that is of vital economic importance to that province (a number of federal departments and agencies, plus towns along the proposed pipeline route – including Kitimat and Fort St. James – have also registered as “government participants”). A legal analysis recently released by the Environmental Law Centre at the University of Victoria has raised concerns that B.C.’s own interests may not be adequately considered by the review panel, as a result of the B.C. government’s refusal to play a role in the hearings. “While the joint review panel has received evidence from the Alberta government as to the project’s benefits (particularly for Alberta oil producers), it has received no evidence from the B.C. government as to its costs and impacts for British Columbia,” write the report’s authors, Chris Tollefson and Emma Hume. “There is growing concern that this imbalance in the evidence submitted to the hearing may adversely affect the ability of the (panel) to weigh the costs and benefits of the project and to fully consider B.C.’s interests,” they conclude. Clark has insisted her government may present evidence sometime in the future, but the deadline for submissions has already passed. The UVic report concludes it is by no means certain, or even probable, that the panel will agree to hear evidence

Fighting for the Royal City

Dear Editor:

New Westminster is fighting for its life. TransLink’s power to impose even heavier traffic through our city must be stopped. The back-to-back trucks polluting our small city and few main roads, have become a nightmare. It seems our city is only viewed as a “truck route.” This group of unelected transportation planners has not planned well. To even think of a six-lane new Pattullo Bridge is madness. The shock of realizing these people don’t care about the quality of life of our residents, nor the future plans to renew this elegant, historical city, is distressing The residents of the Oakridge/Cambie area stopped the above-ground SkyTrain to the airport. They won an underground tunnel, and this preserved their area from ugliness, noise and pollution.

◗Enbridge Page 7

So, dear residents of New Westminster, the power for clean, safe transportation is in your hands. We are the “city on the hill,” a miniature San Francisco. We are the jewel in the crown, for Canada has few cities with our history and lovely setting. During the last 20 years, our city has seen new life and has been renewed for the future, while still treasuring its past. We have a mayor with vision, who dares to think out of the box and who works tirelessly for all of us. Don’t allow TransLink’s power and poor planning to destroy this unique “villagelike atmosphere” – this city with a soul. Everyone needs a transportation system that does not cause more pollution, that is safe, quiet, dependable and wisely planned. For truck traffic, underground tunnels are necessary for you; do not allow truck traffic to destroy a city and the life of its residents. Sylvia Clarke, New Westminster

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Grateful for local gardener

Dear Editor:

Re: Creating beauty in the garden, The Record, July 4. Thank you for acknowledging the beautiful garden created by Duglas Cruz in Queens Park. I was recently on my morning run and it stopped me in my tracks! What a wonder it was to behold! When seeing something as lovely and creative as this you tend to ponder who was responsible for it. Now I know. It was a pleasant surprise to see Cruz next to his work of art in The Record. He is an asset to New Westminster. We are fortunate to have him. I look forward to enjoying his gardens year round. Trish McMurray, New Westminster

Gas revenues questionable

Dear Editor:

In estimating government revenues in his budget earlier this year, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon predicted natural gas sales would generate $398 million and $846 million in royalties for the next two fiscal years. The underlying premise was that the unit price would increase during the period 2012 to 2015. Four months later, the unit price has yet to show any real movement upward, and Falcon now expects a $200 million revenue shortfall in the current fiscal year. His royalty estimate was based on the advice of natural gas industry representatives. And it’s not the first time they have been overly optimistic about the economic health of their sector. In November 2011, Falcon had to announce a $1.6 billion deficit caused by a gas royalty revenue shortfall. The industry apparently had previously

from B.C. at a later date. In fact, the report suggests the longer the B.C. government waits to attempt to submit evidence, the less likely the panel will agree to consider it. However, Clark has shown no signs of changing her government’s position any time soon. So it’s no coincidence that Dix has circulated an op-ed piece demanding that Clark make her government’s views known on an issue that has emerged as perhaps the most critical environmental showdown this province has seen in decades. Dix notes Clark

Let’s get rid of carbon tax

Dear Editor:

One questions why the B.C. government continues to impose the inflationary carbon tax at the gas pump when auto makers continue to produce autos and trucks with near zero emissions. The carbon tax not only penalizes motorists unduly, but forces trades persons; service personnel and industries (including local government) to raise their costs in order to maintain their profit margins. All of which continues to be a double whammy for the B.C. consumer. When the carbon tax was introduced, the government declared it revenue neutral and promised to distribute it to B.C. taxpayers in the form of income tax relief. But when this system is added to the ongoing procedure of collecting the carbon tax monies, it becomes a bureaucratic nightmare with diminishing returns. This is all the more reason why the carbon tax should be eliminated. Mike Horton, Burnaby

Enbridge: Adrian Dix frustrated ◗ continued from page 6

advised the government that the unit price would triple when in fact it fell dramatically due to a market glut. Yet despite this experience, Falcon again relied on industry sources when estimating gas revenues in his February budget, stating: “The experts in the sector believe there is going to be some ramp up in the pricing. We have to take their word for it.” (The Vancouver Sun, Feb. 21, 2012) Other than the fact that their “word” hasn’t yet proven out, is it really reasonable to expect industry spokespeople to paint anything but a rosy picture? After all, their first concern is maintaining investor confidence, not avoiding government deficits.

has said B.C. is taking “100 per cent of the risks” yet gets little benefit from the Enbridge project and points out Clark has stated she is “pro-pipeline.” “This contradictory stance can only be interpreted as a deliberate strategy of a premier who wants the Enbridge pipeline to proceed, but doesn’t want to say so,” Dix writes. Dix and his NDP caucus have, of course, written to the National Energy Board, outlining their reasons for opposing the project. But he no doubt realizes that even if he were to

win the next election, he may not have any further opportunity to push B.C.’s interests into the debate over the final decision on the pipeline. And that’s proving frustrating for him. Nevertheless, expect the pipeline project to loom large in the next election campaign. Clark may finally have taken a position on the project by then. But it may well be too late to have an impact on the final decision on whether the pipeline is built or not. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Higher gas rates in B.C. this summer

Taxation on fuel pushes more drivers across the border for gasoline BY MARELLE REID REPORTER

The price of gas has dropped this month, but we’re still paying more to fuel up here than they are in eastern Canada. Last week, the average price of gas in Metro Vancouver dropped to $1.39, but that’s still about five cents higher than the average cost in Toronto. With gas prices topping $1.50 per litre in Metro Vancouver in May, many are wanting to know who’s to blame for the pain at the pump this summer. Drivers hadn’t seen prices that high since 2008, when gas briefly went above $1.50 per litre as crude oil jumped to over $140 per barrel. In Vancouver, the average cost of gas in June was about 15 cents above what it was in June last year. In B.C. overall, residents were paying more than 27 cents above the national average of $1.27 last month, according to Lindsay Meredith, marketing strategy professor in the faculty of business at Simon Fraser University, said the tax rate is what is pushing more drivers to head to the U.S., where the tax rate is much lower.

Woman dead A tragic local story now has a sad conclusion. New Westminster resident Joyce Dobranski committed suicide on June 28. Dobranski had been charged with manslaughter earlier this year in connection with the death of her six-month old son. She was charged in March after an investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. The incident occurred last summer, when Dobranski called 911 and reported her baby in distress at her Royal City home at 4 a.m. on June 22, 2011. The baby was initially taken to Royal Columbian Hospital but was then transferred to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, where he died three days later. IHIT was called in to investigate on June 24, 2011 and worked closely with the New Westminster Police Department, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, a pathologist and medical staff from B.C. Children’s Hospital. “On behalf of the integrated homicide investigation team, our hearts go out to the family of Joyce, who are now struggling to deal with both of these tragic losses,” Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in a press release.

New Westminster now has 12 new reserve constables. The police department hosted a ceremony at city hall recently to celebrate the 12 reserve constables, the first in the city since the program was phased out in 2000. Under the former program, the reserve constables were armed and their primary function was to provide additional support to the operational policing system under the supervision of full-time police officers. The new provincially regulated reserve constable program, which is what the 12 graduates completed, is

Principals on the move in the Royal City T

here has been a principal shuffle in the New Westminster school district. The move was spurred on by the promotion of

Seasonal lighting The Royal City is looking at enhancing its seasonal decorative lighting. City council has asked staff to undertake a request for proposals for a consultant to develop a comprehensive decorative lighting plan. The city defines decorative lighting as a “beautification tool” that includes any light standard, light fixture or lighting effect for enhancing neighbourhood beauty and character. According to a staff report, the plan would develop a lighting scheme with seasonal and permanent decorative lighting. “It would focus on key areas such as commercial streets, city gateways, parks and other public spaces, and civic facades,” said

the report. “It would both create a unified city brand and highlight the unique characteristics of different neighbourhoods and city landmarks. The resulting decorative lighting would contribute to public way finding, city beautification and revitalization, and to a sense of community identity and pride.” The staff report notes that the city’s tradition of decorative lighting includes seasonal lighting along Columbia Street and on the façade of city hall. Staff has considered Hyack Square, Westminster Pier Park, Columbia Street and East Columbia Street and gateways to the city for decorative lighting schemes. – Theresa McManus

Firefighter dodging for diabetes BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER

Jeff Cartwright is used to attending emergencies, but nothing prepared him for a life-changing health diagnosis in his own family. Last summer, the New Westminster firefighter learned his son Liam has Type 1 diabetes. The diagnosis came after his mom took him to the doctor because he was constantly thirsty. “Sleepovers are out, birthday cake is out, freezies after the game are out,” Cartwright said about the life-changing diagnosis. Liam now gets two shots of insulin in the morning, one at dinner and a final shot at bedtime. “He’s a warrior,” Cartwright said of his eight-year-old son. “He’s absolutely amazing. He is dealing with it better than I am dealing with it. It’s a different life now. I never go “I watched anywhere without a granola bar or a the movie blood test kit.” Dodgeball. I In addition to getting four insuthought that lin shots a day and would be fun. I changing his diet, thought I would Liam’s blood sugar needs to be conget firemen stantly monitored. At some point, he involved.” may get a pump that administers Jeff Cartwright insulin throughout Firefighter the day as needed. Once the shock of his son’s diagnosis wore off, Cartwright decided he wanted to do something to raise money for the JDRF – the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “I watched the movie Dodgeball. I thought that would be fun,” he said about holding a tournament. “I thought I would get firemen involved.” Cartwright contacted the Vancouver Dodgeball League to see if it would be willing to support a small dodgeball tournament to raise money for the foundation. Keith Bao, executive director of the Vancouver Dodgeball League, said the organization had been looking for a charitable event it could support, but it wanted to find one that had the right fit. “It seems very fitting,” he said about raising funds for JDRF through dodgeball. Bao believes the tournament has the potential to become one of the biggest fundraisers for the foundation in Canada, and could be a catalyst for similar leagues and tournaments in other cities. Cartwright said he was shocked to learn that the Vancouver Dodgeball League has more than 1,500 regular participants. “Wait until you watch them,” Cartwright said. “It’s infectious.” Members of the Vancouver Dodgeball League play four nights a week, and attract

We have four nights every season,” said Victoria Mui, tournament manager. Supporting the foundation through her love of dodgeball was a natural fit for Mui, whose sister has Type 1 diabetes. “She was diagnosed when she was 16,” Mui said. According to the foundation, Canada has the sixth highest incidence rate in the world of Type 1 diabetes in children 14 years or younger. More than 300,000 Canadian children and adults live with this form of diabetes. Cartwright is no stranger to raising money for charity, having served as vice president of the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society for several years. With medical researchers saying it’s possible for a cure for Type 1 diabetes to be discovered in his lifetime, the New Westminster resident wanted to do some-

thing to raise funds for the foundation. The JDRF Dodgeball Open will take place from July 27 to 29 at the Richmond Olympic Oval. “It’s cool to be raising more awareness and connecting with the community,” said Amanda De Vries, fundraising and development coordinator with JDRF. “These guys have really stepped up. I am excited for their success this year.” The foundation is the largest charitable funder and advocate for Type 1 diabetes research. Its mission is to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes, which is a non-preventable autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. According to the foundation, people living with Type 1 diabetes need to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin through injections or a pump multiple times a day. They are also at risk for developing complications. As Liam’s lacrosse coach, Cartwright

EFry offering free summer camps AROUND TOWN

he Elizabeth Fry Society wants to help kids enjoy their summer vacation. As part of the society’s JustKids initiative, it is offering free summer camps for children aged six to nine who have had a family member involved in the justice system. The camps are also open to kids who may be at-risk. Karen McCluskey, the society’s media spokesperson, said EFry is able to reach out to its own clients, but wants to ensure other families know about the camps. “There are a lot of other folks in the community who would qualify but they don’t now about it,” she said. “They live in poverty, so they get to do it for free.” The camps run through the end of July. In addition to New Westminster, the society is now offering camps in Surrey and

Vancouver. “It started in 2010. It is expanding this year,” McCluskey said of the JustKids camps. “There is going to be 100 spaces.” The camps, which run Monday to Friday, allow kids to enjoy a variety of activities and enjoy fieldtrips to places like the Vancouver Aquarium. “They go and do all kids of fun things,” McCluskey said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.” Parents or guardians interested in getting more information or registering their kids for the summer camps can call the society at 604-520-1166.

Pacific Breeze celebrates

Pacific Breeze Winery is celebrating its fifth anniversary of being in business in New Westminster. With July marking the winery’s fifth anniversary, it decided to have an open house to celebrate. The event is being held on Saturday, July 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 320 Stewardson Way. Everyone’s invited to attend, but you have to RSVP on Facebook to let them know you’ll be join-

ing the party. “We made it,” said a press release from Pacific Breeze Winery. “More than 50 per cent of businesses fail in the first five years – and we are still standing. We know we are still in business because of you, our customers, and we wish a heartfelt thank you to everyone.” The winery is using the open house as an opportunity to showcase the first of its value-priced wines, and to give guests a chance to be among the first to taste its new and exciting summer release wine.

CF fundraiser

The Vancouver Leisure Society’s Lawn Summer Nights are expanding across the country. For the past three summers, the society has thrown a lawn bowling tournament every Thursday in July to raise money for cystic fibrosis research in honour of Eva Markvoort, the New Westminster resident featured in the awardwinning documentary 65_RedRoses and a cystic fibrosis-sufferer. Markvoort lost her battle

with CF in 2010, but her legacy lives on in many ways, including in this event. “We knew the success of the Vancouver event could be replicated in other cities and branching out to Toronto was a natural next step,” said Duncan Gillespie, founding partner of the Vancouver Leisure Society and a member of the board of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Vancouver chapter. “Cities across the globe including Melbourne, Perth, Boston, Calgary and New York City have reached out to us about holding their own event, and we realized we needed to create a brand that encompassed more than just Vancouver. Eva’s reach was and continues to be global, so this growth is simply another way her legacy is continuing to touch people.” Lawn Summer Nights kicked off its 2012 season in Vancouver on July 5 at the Granville Park Lawn Bowling Club. All of this year’s 2012 Lawn Summer Nights events are sold out. All funds raised go towards finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, which is the number one fatal genetic

disease affecting young Canadians. To date, the Vancouver events have raised more than $105,000. For more information about Lawn Summer Nights, visit www.lawn

Video game history exhibit

Want to play some video games, kids? The New Westminster Museum’s newest exhibit traces the history of video games in B.C. from Pong to recent games made for devices like the iPhone. The exhibit runs Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. (until Oct. 14) at the museum. Admission is by donation. As part of the exhibit, guest curator Ryan Cousineau will present a Video Game Play Day on Aug. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. “It’s a chance for kids to see the video games their parents used to play, with some of the greatest (and worst!) console games, on the original equipment,” he said in a press release. Oana Capota, museum curator, notes that space is still available for the video play day. If you’re interested, register at 604-

527-4640.The museum is located at 302 Royal Ave.

West side stories

The New Westminster child development public partners committee is seeking input from folks on the west side of the city. The committee is looking for input from families or caregivers who have children in their care at least two days a week and live in the Connaught Heights and West End neighbourhoods. It is assessing the needs for programs and services on the west side to determine if a child development hub is needed. Input will help shape the possible development of a hub and will provide critical information about families’ want and needs. The survey is open until Aug. 6 and is available online at sidesurvey. Choose your closest friendships wisely HEALTHWISE

hen you think about the key factors to good health, what comes to mind? Obviously, healthy habits, good genes and luck. How about your relationships? And when you think about your most important relationships, you may consider first your parents, partner, siblings or children. What about your friends? Of course, there are many types of friendships. Not all Facebook friends are equal. They could be

classmates, neighbours, party friends, drinking buddies, bowling friends, fishing pals, running partners or coworkers. With each you may share some common interests and varying degrees of connectedness and intimacy. Through the stories shared by my patients, I see the impact of unhealthy friends. Many have described one-sided relationships where they have adopted the role of the giver or the listener. When my patients need someone to talk to, they come to me because their friends do not reciprocate. Some friends perpetuate unhealthy behaviour. You may share “good times,” such as partying and drinking together, and together you “normalize” drug or alcohol abuse. Every week, I surprise

young men and women when I inform them that three standard alcoholic drinks (a regular glass of wine, a shot of spirits, or a can of beer) is the healthy single day limit for a man’s liver while two drinks is the limit for a woman. Exceeding that on the weekend with friends officially makes them “binge drinkers.” Other unhealthy friends can encourage you to spend beyond your means – not just on food and drink but on entertainment and the luxury items that you neither need or can afford. Your friends may also lead you to believe that a growing credit card debt is normal and reasonable. Your friends shape your beliefs. They can perpetuate narrow-mindedness, racism, prejudice and sex-

Question: We have a snowball bush about 40 years old, and for the past three to four years, we have been fighting a black worm on the leaves. We have tried Sticky Foot around the trunk and numerous sprayings of insecticidal soap and nothing helps. Can you help us save this old bush? Keith, via email Answer: Your problem sounds like the viburnum leaf beetle. Sticky material around the trunk won’t help because the adults of the larvae that eat the leaves can fly to the bushes to lay their eggs on the twigs. You can start controlling the beetle by examining the twigs for tiny black spots. These are clusters of beetle eggs which are laid in tiny cavities and sealed with a mix of chewed wood and beetle feces. These are usually on the tiny fragile twigs at the

outside of the bush. Pruning these twigs and garbaging them will remove a lot of eggs. Each black spot holds about eight. But because the larvae hatch in May, you’re probably too late for pruning this year. But do start pruning in fall or over the winter. The more eggs you can garbage, the fewer worms next year. In June, the larvae will drop down to the soil and go into a chrysalis stage. Starting in early July, if you have bare soil under your viburnums, you could try removing the top inch of earth and burying it in a deep hole or putting it in a garbage bag, sealing it and keeping it for a few months. In fall, you should be safe to dump this earth somewhere in your garden. This should remove quite a few of the chrysalises which hatch into beetles in late July. Any chrysalis you miss will turn into a beetle that can lay several hundred eggs over the next twoand-a-half months. This is a control method. Some eggs and chrysalises will always get away from you, or beetles could fly in from the neighbours. But it’s worth doing

because some viburnums die after several years of this beetle’s work. Question: I haven’t removed my dahlias from the ground since planting them last year and they have started sprouting. Is it too late to dig them up and divide them. Do you need to divide them every year? Michelle, Vancouver Answer: Dahlias don’t have to be divided every year. Some coastal gardeners in well-drained situations deliberately leave them in the soil over the winter. In mild winters, they can come back. But, like other clumpforming plants, they need to be divided sometimes. Plants usually show when they need division by producing fewer flowers, smaller leaves and spindly stems. The timing will depend on how nutritious your soil is and how well the dahlias are responding to feeding. If you don’t want to wait until your dahlias complain, dividing every two years is safest. Bellies blanked at Crosby novice BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR

New Westminster teams took a bit of a beating at the Jack Crosby memorial all-star novice lacrosse tournament. New West’s Tier 1 and 2 teams both failed to win a game at the 27th annual Crosby all-star showcase. The A1 advanced Salmonbellies lost 84 in the crossover playdowns to third-place Port Coquitlam on Saturday. The A2 ’Bellies dropped all five of their Tier 2 outings, including a narrow 5-4 defeat to Coquitlam Bronze. The novice Lakers, fourth-place pool finishers in the advanced Tier 1 division, improved upon last season’s finish, upsetting Port Coquitlam 7-4 in the bronze-medal final at Burnaby Lake Arena on Sunday. Burnaby won the advanced Tier 1 division at the 2005 Crosby competition. Markus Klarich had a strong game for Burnaby, scoring two back-to-back goals in the third period, while assisting on the 21 go-ahead marker by Anthony Vargas early in the middle frame. Nathan Chua upped the score to 4-1 on a four-on-one break before PoCo took advantage of the Lakers’ tired legs and closed the deficit to a single goal just before the interval. But despite starting the final period on a five-minute penalty kill, a refreshed bunch of Lakers, led by goal scorer Julian Vargas, tallied the game-winning goal shorthanded in the 44th minute on MVP allstar goalie Stuart Phillips.

Juniors lose BCLA appeal and second place to Islanders BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR

Keep trying: New Westminster’s Jaxon Stocker, in white, gets into a shooting lane against Saanich in Tier 2 play at the Crosby memorial novice all-star lacrosse tournament on Saturday. But The Record player of the game was at the opposite end of the floor in the uniform of first-year goalie Jackson MurphyJohnson. Murphy-Johnson, who had never played goal prior to this season, stopped numerous PoCo shots, including a breakaway attempt by Jordan Bahowrie midway through the second period. PoCo came into the consolation final following a narrow 7-6 loss to eventual silver medallist Coquitlam Gold the night before. On the other hand, Burnaby’s short bench proved no match against the defending Crosby gold medallist, Oakville Hawks, coming into the bronze final as the under-

dog after losing 15-5 in the other semi. Burnaby did it with teamwork, despite having little more than two complete units to call on during the four-day competition. “We have some really good goal scorers, but we had some goal scorers who scored some goals they don’t normally do,” Murphy-Johnson added. The novice Lakers also had a backstopper who took it upon himself to step up when the team’s regular goalie could not start the season. “Before our first game, I said to myself, ‘I should be in goal’ and the coach said I was good,” said MurphyJohnson. In the gold-medal final at the Bill Copeland Sports

Centre, Oakville won its second straight Crosby title, nearly doubling Coquitlam Gold 15-8. All-star Ryan Brooks and Owen Sage both scored hat tricks and registered two assists in the title win for the Ontario visitors. Austin Ducommun of New Westminster was named a Tier 1 MVP allstar. In Tier 2, Nanaimo got by Kamloops 5-3 in the gold-medal final, while Saanich took the bronze with an 11-2 victory over Ridge Meadows. Ben Soenen of New West was named an all-star. Cowichan Valley won the Tier 3 title with a resounding 12-2 win over Surrey. North Shore took third over host Burnaby.

A last-minute appeal to the B.C. Lacrosse Association on Sunday failed to give the New Westminster Salmonbellies the second place they arguably deserved. The Salmonbellies finished in third place in the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League following a 9-4 win over the Burnaby Lakers at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre later the same day. New West finished with 14 wins and 29 total points, one point back of runner-up Delta, which profited by the forfeiture of the ’Bellies’ June 28 win over Nanaimo. New West was docked two points for playing recently signed junior B holdout Quinn Smith after acquiring the Kamloops runner in a trade. The junior ’Bellies will open their best-of-three playoff on Saturday at Queen’s Park Arena against Victoria, which also lost points in the standings for a similar violation. With the loss of the appeal, Smith will remain ineligible to play for the remainder of the post season. New West and Victoria lost an initial appeal to the B.C. junior league last week. “The kid (Smith) suffers and we lose second place. But we have to move forward and play Victoria,” said New West general manager Doug Zack. Like-minded GMs will form a committee later this

summer and go through the BCJLL’s operating policy in the hopes of clarifying any vaguely worded rules, Zack said. “At the end of the day, we got beat up by an interpretation of a rule,” Zack said. “We will try our best to get this (committee) going and to put a big dent in it, so mistakes will not be repeated with a better policy behind the ruling.” Any policy changes would then have to be endorsed at the BCLA annual general meeting in November. In Burnaby, Anthony Malcom got the New West juniors rolling off the opening faceoff 32 seconds into the game with his ninth goal of the year. New West then silenced any idea Burnaby may have had of a comeback when Luke Gillespie started the final frame with his first of two goals at 56 seconds. Josh Becker also collected a pair of goals in the win. Malcom led all scorers with five points. Junior B callup Spencer England got the win in goal, stopping 35 shots. The junior A kicks off tonight (Wednesday) in Langley with Thunder hosting the Port Coquitlam Saints at the Langley Events Centre at 8 p.m. New West opens its best-of-three playoff with Victoria at Queen’s Park on Saturday. The series reverts to Victoria on Sunday, with an if necessary game scheduled for Queen’s Park on Tuesday. All game times are 5 p.m.

First-ever Provincial Cup for u-15 Barca girls BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR

New Westminster Barcelona proved the superiority of system over substance at the B.C. Soccer Provincial A Cup in Kamloops. Barca defeated their closest rival Coquitlam Metro-Ford Galaxy 2-1 in the under-15 girls’ gold-medal championship final on Sunday, winning the Royal City Youth Soccer Club’s firstever Provincial A Cup by a Metro team. A day earlier, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in group play. The Royal City team also beat the Galaxy 1-0 in the Coastal A Cup final in May.

But, with two key players, Mikayla Knowler and Carly Cody, unavailable, Barca stuck to its system and prevailed. “It goes more to the style of the Barca team. We don’t focus on cups. They will happen if they just keep passing the ball around and play possession,” said New West co-coach Gary Hutchinson. “It sounds like we do a lot of work, but it really happens on the practice field.” New Westminster struck early in the provincial final, with Alessia Mastromonaco and Tia Lore teaming up in the second minute to spring Juliet Davies for the game’s first goal. Then again in the 16th min-

ute, Ellen Williams and Sarah Ng, combined to free up Rachel Hutchinson, who beat two defenders before sending Lore away on a successful breakaway. Royal City defended Coquitlam’s long-ball game well, with u-15 silver-level callup Zoe Loewen filling in well alongside fullbacks Celeste Bain, Naomi Noda, Ng and Mastromonaco and midfielders Ally Fabian, Ellen Williams. U-14 silver callup Sarah McCarthy subbed at midfield in the second half and was involved in a number of scoring chances. Montana Wegner, Madison Lee, Fabian, Lore and Hutchinson all had good scoring chances, but

without the finish of the first half. Metro-Ford ruined the shutout bid of Kristan Rodrigues on a free kick in the second minute of added time. Barcelona opened the fourteam competition with a 2-1 win over the host Kamloops Blaze at MacArthur Island Park. A series of miscues in the ninth minute led to the Blaze opening the score. But, Royal City stuck to its system and levelled the score in the 20th minute on a hard shot by Wegner. Hutchinson, who set up Wegner for the 1-1 goal, finally broke the stalemate in the 74th minute, outrunning the last

defender for the ball and nailing a low shot behind the Kamloops keeper. Barca earned a spot in the A Cup final following a 5-1 victory over Victoria Bays United on the Friday. Hutchinson and Lore both scored a pair of goals, while Wegner gave the New West club a 3-1 lead just before halftime. Wegner also scored New West’s only goal in the meannothing group draw with the Galaxy on Saturday. Next season, the Barcelona squad will test its system in the u-17/18 girls’ division. ◗Soccer Page 20

Hyack club back on top at B.C. AAA championships BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR

The Hyack Swim Club is back on top for the first time in decades at the Swim B.C. AAA long course championships in Richmond last week. The Hyack club earned the aggregate team title on the final night of racing to win its first provincial long course title since the 1980s at Watermania in Richmond on Sunday. “This is a historic achievement for the club,” said Hyack club head coach Mark Bottrill. Sherry Liu of Burnaby led the squad with four gold medals in the girls’ 18-year-old division, winning the 200-, 400- and 800metre freestyle and 400m individual medley. Liu also picked up a runner-up medal in the 100m free and a bronze in the 200m IM. Two up-and-coming Hyack swimmers also had multi-medal performances at the four-day meet, including five provincial records. Wendy Yang of Burnaby won four gold and one silver medal in the 13-yearold girls’ division in a record showing. Yang set new age group records in the 50m free in 27.70 and 100m backstroke in 1:09.56. She also tied the provincial record in the 100m butterfly with a 1:05.84 clocking. Yang also won gold in the 100m free and a silver in the 200m free. New Westminster ’s Ethan Liang, 11, set two new age-group marks in the boys’ 100 and 200m breaststroke, winning the former in a record time of 1:18.12 and the latter in 2:48.07. “He could be the next big guy,” said Bottrill of the young Royal City swimmer. “He just crushed everybody in his age category in the breaststroke.” Liang also earned bronze medals in the 100m backstroke and 200 and 400 IM. Stefan Milosevic, 16, competed well in the senior boys’ division, earning a total of six medals. The Cariboo Hill Secondary student won four silver medals in the 200, 400 and 1,500m free

and 200m fly, while also taking home a pair of bronze in the 200m back and 400m IM. Sara Whelan garnered five medals in the 14-yearold girls’ category, earning three silver in the 100m breast and 400 and 800m free. She also medalled in the 100m free and 400m IM. Dima Lim, 11, won three medals, including a pair of silvers in the 100m back and 200m free. The win was the first B.C. long-course title for the New Westminsterbased Hyacks in 26 years. Last year, the Hyacks placed second and third overall at the short- and long-course provincials, respectively. The club placed fifth at this year’s short course meet but only by 100 points. “They all had to more or less fire to get the big-point categories – gold through bronze,” Bottrill said. “We won our Stanley Cup.” The Hyacks edged runner-up Island Swimming and the Pacific Sea Wolves clubs for top sport. “What it does indicate for us is we’re a club that absolutely grows our own swimmers from the grass roots,” Bottrill said of the club’s 8-to-10 development programs. “A big shout out to everyone who has being supporting us. We’ve been in the hunt for a while and wanted to keep the momentum up.” Other medallists included Chris Baker, Mia Bottrill, gold medallist Abi Sayer, Jasmine Whelan, Maria Carey, Devon Joanis, Christopher Polok, Mark Pang, Hattie Sun and Kiana Stark. Inder Pooni, Elaine Lam, Justin Kiedrzyn, Daniel Gomez, Igor Gasovic Varga and Jeremy Au also shared in the medals on Hyack relay teams. Hayden Pak, Connor Toomey, Victoria Montgomery, Tara Shirbani and Sehajvir Sing also turned in final top-eight swims. More than 50 provincial records were bettered over the course of the four-day meet. The Hyacks led the meet for the first two days but fell to second place before rallying to win on the final day.

Who’s in second? Keegan Bal, left, will lead the New Westminster Salmonbellies into the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League playoffs against the Victoria Shamrocks at Queen’s Park Arena on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Delta Islanders, in white, earned a bye with a runner-up finish following the regular season. New Westminster’s first round best-of-three playoff moves to the Panorama rec centre in Victoria on Sunday. If necessary, a Game 3 will be played Tuesday at Queen’s Park, also at 5 p.m. In the other playoff between the Langley Thunder and Port Coquitlam Saints, Game 1 is tonight at the Langley Events Centre, beginning at 8 p.m. The series shifts to the PoCo rec centre on Thursday, with a possible Game 3 back in Langley on Saturday. All games are 8 p.m. starts.

“We’re looking to challenge the girls. We’d like to get to the provincials again, but it’s a big step up for them. The focus is playing better soccer,” said coach Hutchinson. “Everyone defends and everyone attacks. It’s a style we taught them from the beginning.” In other Provincial A Cup finals, the u-13 Burnaby Selects won the boys’ title with a 6-1 victory over Coquitlam Metro-Ford Millenium. The u-18 Burnaby Selects also earned a silver medal at the provincials follow-

ing a 2-1 loss to Central City Pegasus in the final. The Burnaby Girls Strikers placed fourth in the u-18 A Cup consolation final 3-2 to Surrey FC Pegasus. Burnaby also brought home a second-place medal from the Provincial B Cup in Aldergrove. The South Burnaby Metro Club Vipers earned the silver medal following a 2-0 loss to Central City. Cliff Avenue United finished in fifth place with a 3-2 win over Shuswap on penalty kicks in u-18 girls’ play.

B.C. Superweek started off in Delta this week. On Thursday it’s Burnaby’s turn. The Giro di Burnaby is back on the streets of Burnaby Heights on July 12, starting off with the women’s criterium at 6 p.m. The men’s race is to follow at approximately 7:15 p.m. With a total cash purse of $15,000 up for grabs, the two-wheeled competition should be exciting. The men’s winner will earn a top prize of $2,000, while the winning female rider will take home $1,200, not including individual race primes, and pronounced preems. Both race winners will also receive a gold medallion from title sponsor Palladio Jewellers worth an estimated $1,300. The Giro course is a 1.3-kilometre loop along Hastings and Albert streets between Madison and MacDonald avenues.
