◗ PIER PARK OPENS
Water, water, everywhere BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER firstname.lastname@example.org
New Westminster officially opened its newest park on what was likely one of the wettest days of the year. Westminster Pier Park, a $25.1 million linear park located on New Westminster’s waterfront between Sixth and Elliott streets, officially opened on Saturday. Representatives of three levels of government and local dignitaries attended the official opening ceremony, which took place amid a torrential downpour. “Today is a great day for our city and one we’ll remember for a very long time,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “With the opening of Westminster Pier Park, we’ve realized a significant goal for New Westminster and reconnected with our historic waterfront. The City of New Westminster purchased the 3.8 hectare brownfield site on the waterfront in 2009 for $8 million. The city later received $16.6 million in funding from provincial and federal governments through the Building Canada ◗Park Page 4

A rental building with numerous deficiencies is getting some much-needed repairs. Tenants and members of ACORN Canada rallied at 1210 Cameron St. in April to highlight concerns about lack of running water, water damage in the building, pest control issues, and problems with the elevator and fire-safety issues.
The City of New Westminster’s integrated service team has made the building a top priority and has provided the building owner with a list of upgrades to be made. A staff report presented to city council on June 11 indicated that the property owner has started work on a number of the repairs, and have restored the building’s water service. “However they did not obtain all of the required permits or copy with the timelines to provide professional reports imposed in the maintenance order,” said the report. “They have now retained the required professionals, provided the required reports and submitted a plan to conduct the needed repairs. The plan calls for major plumbing, electrical, flood

The outstanding amount owed is about $2,700. In addition to the apartment at 1210 Cameron St., city staff is also concerned about the condition of a building at 1211 Cameron St. and are doing a detailed assessment of the property. restoration and other repairs throughout the building.” The city will be issuing a further order stating that the repair work must be done in a “timely manner” and must comply with city bylaws. Because of concerns about the fire separations and the apartment’s alarm system, the city is requiring the property owners to have a “fire watch” on the building until all outstanding fire deficiencies are corrected to repair damaged fire separations and to the building’s alarm system. A fire watch means a person is required to patrol the building to ensure there is no fire and take steps to alert tenants if a fire is detected. “The bylaw officer and fire department officials are conducting daily inspections to

Celebrating the life of a social reformer BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER firstname.lastname@example.org
Sikhs from around the Lower Mainland gathered in Queensborough on Sunday to celebrate the life, teachings and martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Survey says: Keep the Pattullo, but add tolls City residents offer input into future of Pattullo Bridge BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER email@example.com
The majority of New Westminster residents believe the Pattullo Bridge should connect New Westminster to Surrey but shouldn’t be viewed as a regional transportation link. As part of the City of New Westminster’s master transportation plan, questionnaires
have been circulated about residents’ wishes for the Pattullo Bridge. A staff report presented to city council on Monday included the following highlights from the questionnaires: ◆ There is strong agreement with the city’s policy of working toward no new added capacity for through vehicle traffic in New Westminster. ◆ There is strong support for pedestrian and bicycle connections between New Westminster and Surrey. ◆ There is not support for truck priority lanes on a new Pattullo Bridge, but there is
support for some form of restriction or ban on commercial traffic. ◆ There is strong support for discouraging additional traffic, followed by reducing noise and support for improving city streets. ◆ There is strong support for tolling on the Pattullo Bridge. According to a staff report to council, respondents to the survey believe that the Pattullo Bride should function as a local connection between communities on either side of the Fraser River, rather than as a regional link.
While there is “strong opposition” to TransLink’s proposal to replace the Pattullo Bridge with anew six-lane crossing in close proximity to the existing location, public opinion “is quite evenly divided” on other options identified by the city. These options include building a four-lane bridge near the exiting location, demolishing the Pattullo Bridge and not replacing it with another crossing; replacing the Pattullo Bridge with a crossing at Sapperton Bar; demolishing the Pattullo Bridge and replacing it with a crossing outside of New Westminster (such as Tree Island).

A Queensborough home damaged during a recent fire has been found to be a poor candidate for rehabilitation. New Westminster city council had approved a temporary protection order for the 1909 house at 240 Jardine St. that was recently damaged by fire. The order temporarily prevented anyone from altering the building’s exterior, making any structural changes or moving it to another location, until its heritage value could be assessed. A staff report to city council stated that it is the oldest house left in Queensborough. The Dowling residence, which is located at 240 Jardine St., was built by rancher George Dowling in 1909 and was later the home of the Camata family, who ran a dairy farm. As part of a rezoning application for the site and the neighbouring property, the applicant was to retain, restore the exterior and rehabilitate the interior of the home and convert it into a duplex. The fire occurred before the city could send in an independent assessor to view the house. Council granted the temporary protection order on May 14; an independent expert visited the site on May 18 to analyze the home’s condition. Mark Wittig, president of Basil Restoration Ltd., concluded that the house isn’t a good candidate for a relocation and rehabilitation project. He determined that the house was built with poor-quality lumber that had rotted over time, the original wood windows are no longer intact and would need to be replaced, and elements

Can Clark regain voters’ respect? IN THE HOUSE
oliticians and governments can get into trouble because of their legislative policies, but a more serious kind of trouble can emerge from something else: a lack of respect. That is precisely the problem facing Premier Christy Clark right now. Quite frankly, it appears the voters (a lot of them, anyway) simply don’t respect her. Evidence of this can be seen in the spate of recent public opinion polls that show her approval rating nose-diving with the electorate. An Ipsos Reid poll showed her approval level dropping 14 percentage points since February, while an Angus Reid poll showed her to be one of the most unpopular premiers in the entire country. But polls aside, I’m struck at the near-visceral negative reactions Clark gets from many people. We did some person-onthe-street interviews at Global news this past week, and when we asked for opinions of Clark as premier the response was rather startling. The people we talked to were harshly critical and almost mocking of her leadership. She was seen as being in over her head, lacking vision or a game plan and being interested more in political
gamesmanship than actually being a leader. Given the bleak poll findings, these comments are clearly indicative of wider public opinion, and as a result put Clark in a very deep hole that will be very hard to climb out of. I’m not entirely sure why she sparks such emotional and negative reactions in people. The fact she’s a woman is no doubt a factor with some people (female political leaders seem to be judged more harshly than their male counterparts). As unfair as that is, female politicians will always be battling sexist attitudes. Some critics call her the “queen of the photo-ops,” given her constant appearances at government announcements. But her predecessor, Gordon Campbell, also insisted on attending most of his government’s events, and I don’t recall much criticism aimed at him for that practice. However, the photo op approach means Clark is starting to look like a politician who is constantly campaigning and not so much leading or governing. This no doubts causes many voters to question her sincerity, This drop in her personal popularity has robbed her of her argument that she is much more credible than her party. The B.C. Liberals still lag behind her numbers, but the gap has shrunk considerably. She is now descending to the level of her party, which spells disaster for her and her caucus colleagues come election time.
Prime minister shows ‘contempt’ Dear Editor:
The Enbridge plan to pipeline toxic bitumen from the Alberta tar sands to the B.C. coast is facing strong opposition and the horrible example of the recent major oil spill into Alberta’s Red Deer River, says political columnist Keith Baldrey (Pipeline politics are heating up in B.C. – The Record, June 13). No doubt he’s right about Enbridge’s worries, but Mr. Baldrey fails to discuss the problems that face Enbridge’s chief partner in the multibillion-dollar scheme: Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He has insulted and vilified all Canadians who have dared to oppose the pipeline-tanker project, launched a witchhunt against any charitable organizations warning of the project’s dangers and rammed through legislation clearly aimed at clearing the way for Enbridge by crippling any protections for fish, wildlife or ecosystems. Like a Dark Ages king he has ◗Clark Page 7 ruled that Enbridge can do no wrong and that what-
ever the outcome of current assessments of the plan, Harper and Enbridge will triumph. Whatever the motives behind his dictatorial obsession with peddling tar sands crude to China, he is showing total contempt for the democratic process he has sworn to uphold. Harper, with the voter support of only about a quarter of Canadians, is using every power and advantage his high office may provide to make his friend, the Enbridge corporation, successful and prosperous. Is that really how democracy is supposed to work? Tony Eberts, New Westminster

alumni on Saturday, June 9. Every detail was creatively dealt with. The halls were impeccably decorated with relevant student work and research, old photos, memories, opportunities for visitor input, photo opportunities, and the list goes on. The newly acquired mascot, the eagle, was effectively displayed. It was obvious that many hours had been spent developing and displaying curriculum for the event. Accolades to the teachers and support staff! It was delightful to witness generations of “Spencers” sharing in the excitement of the day. There were little boys being photographed in front of pictures of their parents’ class pictures. Grandmothers wheeled a new generation of “Spencers” in strollers through the hallways. “Herbies’ Diner” (the library) was the focal point for food and beverages, giving people a chance to sit down and chat. Numbers of parents and students managed the entire operation from keeping the food moving to clearing up the dishes. I was heartened to read former staff and student’s memories of their cherished years at Spencer on the Memory Wall. One very well written piece talked about when I taught this student in 1966. A strategy that I do not remember sparked his lifelong love of poetry. I could not find him on Saturday, but I’ve tracked him down. He is an accomplished author, and we’re meeting for lunch next week. Thank you, Tracy and team, for giving us the opportunity to connect. I’m sure others echo my thanks. “To teach is to touch a life forever!” June (Gilgan) Harrison, Spencer teacher, 1963-1970
Don’t blame the pit bulls
I am writing in response to the article titled ‘Fighting for dog rights’ in the June 15 paper.
I wholeheartedly support the amendment of the animal control bylaws to take out the breed-specific portion. I commend April Fahr for the work she does to speak out for a type of dog that is so wrongfully stigmatized. Do people get these dogs for the wrong reasons? Yes. Do many more people get them for the right reasons? A bigger yes. I have worked with animals, mostly dogs, over the last 12 years. I have worked in animal shelters, owned a dog walking company, and I currently own a dog daycare. Irresponsible owners come in all forms and own all types of dogs. People get dogs of all breeds for the wrong reasons all the time, and many dog owners are irresponsible with their dogs, ignoring bylaws which are in place to keep people and other animals safe. Putting extra restrictions on one type of dog does not work to reduce the number of people who are irresponsible with their dogs. The reason so many people seem to think that there are more bites/attacks by pit bull type dogs is because the media flocks to these stories. Headlines sell, and “Labradoodle attack” just does not sell newspapers, yet these things happen. The general public just does not hear about them. I have a friend whose five-year-old daughter was asked by a senior woman, “what is a good breed of dog to get that is good with children?” She answered, “Oh, a pit bull, of course!” The woman was very surprised to hear this, but the girl was speaking the truth and speaking from experience. She is a lover of all dogs and has the joy of being able to be around all types of dogs, and without hesitation, she answered with complete honesty. Children see things as they are and do not accept stereotypes. It is adults who put judgments on others and teach children to discriminate based on a look. I invite anyone who believes that these types of dogs are evil to meet one or two. Megan Ferris, Surrey
Clark: Can she get out of trouble? ◗ continued from page 6
The latest Ipsos Reid poll showed the NDP leading the B.C. Liberals by huge margins in all areas of the province, and it also showed a huge gender gap. Women voters have deserted the B.C. Liberals in droves, as women in particular appear to be turned off by Clark. Applying the recent poll numbers to the 2009 election results, on a ridingby-riding basis, suggests the B.C. Liberals would be lucky to win 15 seats if an election were held today and would probably be nearer to a half dozen wins.
This bleak situation will no doubt start whispers about whether it’s possible for the B.C. Liberals to oust Clark and rally around someone else to remount a charge against the surging New Democrats. Frankly, I don’t see how, say, Kevin Falcon or Rich Coleman or any other member of the B.C. Liberal caucus could right their party’s ship. They are all tainted by association with the Campbell government and the HST debacle. Clark’s personal popularity may be plummeting, but I see no evidence to suggest one of her caucus
colleagues would do much better with the voters. Now, I’m not sure whether she can regain her own popularity. Certainly, the gap between the NDP and the B.C. Liberals should close at least a bit by the time the election campaign rolls around. But Clark would be well advised to try something different. What she’s doing right now clearly isn’t working – and getting back the respect of the voters is the only way to even think of getting out of that very deep hole. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

In addition to its current inventory of 30,000 sandbags, the City of New Westminster has made arrangements with local suppliers for additional sandbags, sand, aggregate and temporary pumps if needed.

Happy family: Maggie Lai and her partner, Johann, with their 14-month old daughter Elise. Lai chose New West Community Midwives for her two pregnancies and says she is happy with the choice to use a midwife rather than a doctor.
Midwifery rising in popularity
BY MARELLE REID REPORTER firstname.lastname@example.org
What comes to mind when you hear the term “midwife”? If you picture a Birkenstock-wearing, New Age woman who advocates only for medication-free home births in a bathtub, you have some catching up to do on your knowledge of 21st-century obstetrics in Canada. Midwives are licensed practitioners who specialize in caring for women through pregnancy, delivery and post-partum. They neither push for, nor advise against, using medication during labour, and about 75 per cent of midwife-assisted births in Canada take place in a hospital, according to the Midwives Association of British Columbia.
“We don’t push anything,” says Tracy Simpson, a registered midwife. “We do the opposite of pushing. That’s the key part of midwifery – the clients make their own choices.” At New West Community Midwives, where Simpson and her colleague Lindsay Brimblecombe run their practice a block from Royal Columbian Hospital, client Maggie Lai and her partner Johann wait with their 14-month old daughter Elise for a checkup. The Lai family chose to go with a midwife for their first child and are back again for their second. “This was one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made,” says Maggie. “Tracy and Lindsay have been extremely supportive, even after Elise was born.” Sharon Tan, another client who is back

Midwives: Demand is growing steadily ◗ continued from page 11
How to properly breastfeed and general health-care questions. “We get a lot of midnight phone calls about bleeding belly buttons,” she said. With so many valuable aspects to having a midwife, why would anyone not choose to go with the service? Other than for women with highrisk pregnancies, Simpson says it’s basically just a lack of awareness about what’s offered. “We do the same things (as doctors), we just do it differently,” she said. “We’re educating people. We don’t just hand them a form and say, ‘Go fill this out.’” Angie Dodd, another client at New West Community Midwives, had her first baby under the care of her family doctor. She is now pregnant with her second child and is happy to have followed her friends’ advice to choose midwifery this time. “They’re more conscientious and detail-oriented than a doctor might be,” she said. “So peace of mind is there. The minute something is a bit off they’re like, ‘Let’s just check,’ rather than waiting to see.” Midwives can order the same tests as a family doctor – genetic screen-

he International Order of Job’s Daughters recently crowned Taylor Johansen as the 104th Honoured Queen of Bethel No. 22 in New Westminster. Johansen is an École Glenbrook Middle School student, and her father is Paul Johansen, a member of the school district parent advisory council. Job’s Daughters is an organization that offers scholarship opportunities to girls and young women from aged 10 to 20. As Honoured Queen, Taylor plans to put the focus on fun and will plan family- and communityoriented activities that will build leadership, public speaking skills and teamwork, says a press release. Over the next six months, the girls of Bethel No. 22 will go to the waterslides; conduct a shoreline cleanup; serve at Masonic Lodges, at the
Burnaby Garden Club and Miniature Club; as well as perform a wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph, the release said. Sleepovers, face-painting, bottle drives and ice-skating are also on the itinerary for the girls, their family and friends. Bethel No. 22 meets twice monthly in New Westminster. New members are welcome, and eligibility for membership rests on being related to a Master mason, the release states. This relationship is broad, from daughters and stepdaughters to cousins and nieces. For more information, visit www.bcjd.org.

They are: Vitalia Lyssoun, Lisa Peters (KNV Chartered Accountants LLP), Adrian Pidor (Wolrige Mahon LLP) and Cynthia Hsin-Hua Tung (KPMG LLP), a press release states. Students recognized at the convocation ceremony
are eligible for membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of B.C. this year. “These students have earned their CA designation by successfully completing a rigorous and competitive academic program, focused on business and accounting competencies,” Richard Rees, CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia, said in the release. “We are very proud of them, and they should take great pride in having earned their CA designation.” To qualify as a CA, students must have a university degree or equivalent, 30 months of practical work experience in an approved CA training office and complete courses through the CA qualification program. CAs must also pass a comprehensive rigorous national final exam to earn their designation. Do you have a good-news item from local schools? Jewelry store earns honour AROUND TOWN
usan Cartwright is the proud owner of a beautiful Trollbeads Hero of the Year Award Trophy. Cartwright and her husband, Brian Coates, recently attended an all-day seminar and academy for Trollbeads International in Las Vegas. The New Westminster residents were among the 650 people from across Canada and the United States who attended a gala black tie event that was hosted by Trollbeads. According to a press release, Cartwright Jewelers was the proud recipient of the Trollbeads Hero of the Year Award. Submissions came from across Canada and they were judged on performance, creativity in advertising, special promotions and enthusiasm for the Trollbeads product. As Cartwright was on stage receiving her award, she thanked everyone who was involved in the submission and especially her staff. She said if it wasn’t for her staff’s enthusiasm for the product, she wouldn’t have been on the stage.

Cadet instructor earns decoration Sub-Lt. Chris Nilsson has been awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration for his 12 years of service as a Canadian Forces cadet instructor in New Westminster. Having joined Sea Cadets in 1987, Chris went through the ranks and fell in love with all things to do with life on the water. As a cadet, he trained as a marine engineer and continues to use his skills in his career. Nilsson is currently employed by Port Metro Vancouver as a harbour patrol officer, and by Forrest Marine where he engages in fishing and salvage operations. Nilsson was attested in the Canadian Forces as a Naval Cadet in 1999. When asked what has kept him in the program for all of these years, he said “the comradeship of my mess mates and the delight in seeing the cadets’ eyes light
up as they start to understand what it’s like to work on the river and can’t help but say, ‘cool, look at what I learned!’” Lieut. Bryan Watson of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Fraser said the Canadian Forces Decoration is a national honour awarded to officers of the Canadian Forces who have completed 12 years of service. Sea cadets is program for youth ages 12 to 18. Fraser serves the communities of New Westminster, Delta and Burnaby. The City of New Westminster is pleased with the response to its second annual heritage register homes workshop. The workshop, held June 9 at city hall, included presentations on a variety of topics. Attendees also had time before and after the presentations to visit and speak with the people at the community and professional information booths. “The city is really happy to host this workshop each year in order to give back to the people who have placed their homes on the heritage register,” said Julie Schueck, the city’s heritage planner. “It is meant to be a perk, and judging by the many smiles I saw that day, it was enjoyable as well as informative.” A total of 38 people attended the free workshop, most staying for all of the presentations. “The afternoon provided a great deal of information and tips from professionals who were knowledgeable and experienced in the care
of heritage homes,” said a report about the event. “The presence of heritagerelated community groups rounded out the afternoon and provided participants with local and provincial resources that they can access.” The workshop included presentations on a variety of topics, including: heritage revitalization agreement – is it right for you (Dave Vallee, Realtor with RE/MAX Advantage Reality); understanding the value of owning a heritage home, including five ways to increase energy efficiency without changing your windows (Keri Briggs, Vintage Woodworks); historic garden designs in a contemporary world (Dennis Cornies, the Well-Tempered Gardener); heritage homes; restorations, renovations and additions (Rob Johnson, Rob Johnson Architects); shakes, shingles and siding (Jeanette Hlavach, heritage consultant and Vancouver Heritage Foundation instructor); and how to make your home more energy efficient and preserve your heritage windows (Monte Paulsen, certified energy advisers and LEED green associate). “I really enjoyed giving my presentation and was happy with the enthusiasm by those in attendance,” Cornies said. “North Vancouver is interested in doing a workshop similar to (the one in New Westminster) for the North Shore. …Too many developers are willing to sell their souls for a bowl of pottage.” Do you have an idea for Around Town? Royal City actors onstage
THE LIVELY CITY JULIE MACLELLAN
new production onstage at Granville Island is a Royal City affair. Salt-Water Moon, by David French, just opened last night (June 19) and is running in the Carousel Theatre large studio until June 29. A press release notes that the play tells the story of 18-year-old Jacob Mercer, who has returned from Toronto to the tiny Newfoundland outport of Coley’s Point in 1926, hoping to win back his former sweetheart, Mary Snow. Of course, it won’t be easy – Mary has become engaged and is still hurt by Jacob’s abrupt departure a year before. The two young lovers are played by two young New Westminster actors – Jesse DeCoste and Sofia Newman. You’ve seen them both mentioned in these pages before. Jesse most recently
appeared in the Royal City Musical Theatre production of Hello, Dolly! He’s a New Westminster Secondary grad who has completed a year at UBC and will soon be moving to England, where he’s been accepted into the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Sofia, meanwhile, is an actor, singer and musician who attends NWSS, where she sings vocal jazz, plays percussion and sometimes sings with the soul-funk band Duck Soldier. This summer she’ll be taking part in her fifth year in Carousel Theatre’s Teen Shakespeare program, where she’ll play Trinculo in The Tempest. The Salt-Water Moon production is directed by Richard Newman – who, besides being Sofia’s father, is also a wellknown actor, musician and voice-over artist. And the Royal City connections continue backstage – one of Sofia’s classmates, Jeremy Stehr, is the assistant stage manager. Salt-Water Moon is on Tuesdays to Sundays at 8 p.m., with shows at 6 and 9 p.m. on Fridays. Tickets are $15, available at the door or through

World Poetry is celebrating all things British at its next gathering in New Westminster. The next World Poetry Night Out is set for Wednesday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave. The evening will be hosted by Selene Bertelsen and Jemma Downes, with Ariadne Sawyer. Also on hand will be Candice James, the city’s poet laureate, and Tony Antonias. Featured poets will be Alan Hill, Timothy Shay, Bertelsen and Downes. There will also be an open mike session on the theme of poems on England or to England. Refreshments will be in the form of British fare – Eccles cakes, strawberry cream scones and tea. For information, call 604-526-4729.
Well, folks, it’s hard to believe, but the time has
very nearly come for me to bid you a temporary farewell. My last day of work is June 29 before I head off on maternity leave (yes, for those not already aware, I’m currently expecting my first). Needless to say, hubby and I are in the throes of getting the house ready for the new arrival, and I’m in the process of clearing off my desk and passing my files over to my soon-tobe-named replacement. Rest assured, the arts and entertainment beat won’t be neglected in my absence – keep watching these pages for news in the next few weeks of who’ll be at the helm. In the meantime, you can keep sending your arts and entertainment tips, tidbits and press releases to my email, jmaclellan@ royalcityrecord.com, as it will be forwarded to an appropriate person. Have a great year, everyone – I look forward to reading about you all in these pages! Do you have an item for Lively City? Send ideas to jmaclellan@royalcityrecord. com. Hyack wins aggregate at Arizona swim meet
Cariboo Hill Secondary student Stefan Milosevic helped Team B.C. win the recent Tucson Invitational swim meet at the University of Arizona on June 11. B.C. more than doubled the host club, garnering 1,542 points to Tuscon’s 682. Milosevic won the men’s high point aggregate at the meet, following thirdplace finishes in the men’s 100-metre backstroke, 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley. The Hyack club swimmer also placed fourth in the 200m freestyle and was fifth in the 400m IM.
Milosevic also helped B.C. place first in the 800m and second in the 400m in the men’s relay events. Simon Fraser Aquatics’ Mariya Chekanovych had a pair of individual wins in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. The Burnaby swimmer also picked up a first and second on B.C.’s women’s relay teams. The long course meet was an opportunity for Canada Games-aged swimmers to focus on how to prepare for high-level competition.
What’s happening in sport Javelin thrower Curtis Moss inched closer to the Olympic A standard needed to earn a spot on Canada’s Summer Games team. Moss threw the javelin 81.21 metres to win the men’s final at the Victoria International Track Classic on June 12. The throw was a personal best for the 25-year-old Burnaby Central Secondary grad, who had PB’ed earlier in the week, winning the Harry Jerome meet with a B standard throw of 80.43m.
Moss needs to throw 82m to earn an A standard to be considered for selection to Canada’s national track and field team for the London Olympics.
Queensborough motocross rider Spencer Knowles moved into a top10 position on the Canadian national racing circuit following a fourth-place overall finish at Wild Rose Park in Calgary on Sunday. The 19-year-old Knowles placed third on a Yamaha in
the second race of the day after an eighth-place finish in the opening event. Earlier in the month, Knowles opened the ninestop series in Nanaimo with a runner-up finish on the Wastelands circuit. Knowles is in Edmonton this week for Round 4.
Award of merit
Burnaby Edmonds resident Doug Ross was a recent recipient of an Award of Merit from B.C. Soccer at the association’s recent annual awards.

To hear your voice, to see your smile, to sit with you and talk, would be our greatest wish today but we will always have your heart. Time may hide the sadness like the smiles that hide the tears but the treasured memories never fade despite the passing year. With tender love and deep regret, we who love you will never forget. Love you forever - Pamela, Kim, Grant, & Janis. Grandchildren: Lindsay, Matthew, Cole, James, and Natalie

It’s been sixteen years But the pain never goes away The wounds are not so raw But we cannot forget that day. I remember when you were born You fought so hard to live We lost you much too soon When you had so much to give. You should be going for your first legal drink And we should be watching you misbehave Instead of spending your nineteenth birthday Visiting you at your grave. You brightened the lives of many In the short time you were here Though we would have loved more time We will cherish every year. Your sisters and cousins are wonderful They are growing up so fast And though their futures are bright They will never forget the past. We will always love you Megan We still miss you every day The years may pass us by But the memories are here to stay. Love Auntie Grace
