Homeless man dies in container fire

A 53-year-old homeless man is dead in North Vancouver after a fire broke out in the shipping container he was apparently living in.

Police and fire crews arrived on scene behind a business in the 200-block of Lloyd Avenue at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night after someone reported seeing smoke coming from the container.

The man’s body was discovered inside after they extinguished the blaze.

Police said the man had been living in the container — which had a bed, chair, hotplate and a TV hooked up to a power connection — for possibly close to a year.

Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP, said the man was known to police, who would often see him on the streets of North Vancouver. “He survived by panhandling, picking up bottles and scraping together what he could,” said De Jong. He called the death tragic.

It appears the fire may have been caused by a candle that was left burning on a chair inside the container. De Jong said while the container likely provided a strong shelter away from the elements, it had no ventilation.

According to a B.C. Assessment report released Tuesday, West Vancouver saw some of the province’s largest gains. A typical single-family home in British Properties that was valued the year before at $1.5 million is now worth $2.2 million, a 45 per cent increase. Houses in the Gleneagles and Ambleside neighbourhoods saw gains of 20 and 28 per cent respectively.

Strata condominiums, meanwhile, gained at much more modest rates. A twobedroom apartment in Dundarave that was valued at $692,000 in 2010 was worth $713,000 by July 1, 2011, the date of assessment.

In North Vancouver, a $738,000 Westview house gained four per cent in value, while a $970,000 home in Delbrook rose by 16 per cent.

While most apartments in the Lonsdale corridor saw slight upticks, some two-bedroom units actually saw slight losses.

The North Shore’s overall gains easily outpaced the provincial average gain of 6.55 per cent. Vancouver saw an overall 16.42 per cent increase, although that was unevenly spread. The distribution is similar to that seen in on the North Shore, with large singlefamily homes on the West Side posting 38 per cent increases and downtown condominiums rising just 13 per cent.

In a written release, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver reported that 2011 also saw a jump in property sales compared to the year before, although the total was lower than the 2009 sales volume and the 10-year average.

“It was a relatively balanced year for the real estate market in Greater Vancouver, with listing totals slightly above historical norms and sale numbers slightly below,” said board president Rosario Setticasi. “Our market remained in a balanced state for most of the year, although higher levels of demand for detached properties in the region’s largest communities caused prices in certain areas to rise higher than others.”

Changes in assessed values may have implications for homeowners seeking relief from property taxes. The provincial government offers grants of up to $570 for owners with homes worth less than $1.285 million.

Additional grants are offered for seniors and veterans. Those with homes valued above the threshold may still be eligible for a partial grant.

Smoke inhalation has been identified as the preliminary cause of death.

The container was owned by a local business United Power Ltd. and stored on the property near the West Vancouver Transit Depot. An employee at the business said nobody knew that someone was living in the container.

Geoff Bodnarek, an outreach worker with the Canadian Mental Health Association’s North Vancouver office, said the man who died used to be a carpenter but wasn’t able to work after he injured his back. Bodnarek said the man struggled with alcoholism and preferred not to live at the shelter or with roommates. “He’d much rather be on his own,” said Bodnarek.

But he said social assistance of $610 a month doesn’t go far on the North Shore, which the man considered home.

Recently, Bodnarek said he helped the man fill in forms to apply for a further disability payment.

He said he last saw the man at a Christmas party hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association for clients.

Bodnarek said he didn’t know where the man was living. “He chose not to disclose that,” he said.

Outreach workers put the number of homeless in North and West Vancouver at about 300, although official counts are lower.

David Newberry, community liaison worker at the Lookout Emergency Shelter, said the North Shore shelter is always full.

Because affordable housing is so hard to find, shelter stays are getting longer, he said, which means the shelter has to turn more people away each year.

The B.C. Coroners Service will be conducting an autopsy on the man who died in Tuesday’s fire, whose family in the Lower Mainland has been notified of the death.

Police did not release his name, at the request of the family.

NORTH Vancouver RCMP have released photos of five people they say were members of a professional bank fraud ring that was operating on the North Shore this past summer.

The four men and one woman were caught by security cameras while allegedly withdrawing cash at ATMs throughout the Lower Mainland using forged credit cards.

According to investigators, the suspects had obtained the credit card numbers and PINs needed to pull off the scam using

a dummy debit terminal that had been planted in an unidentified — and unsuspecting — North Shore business. The device had recorded customer data during legitimate transactions between June and August this year, they said.

The Mounties are hoping the public can help them identify the suspects.

“We all pay the price for these economic crimes,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. “These individuals need to be identified and charged criminally.”

OBODY plans to fail, as the saying goes, but lots of people fail to plan.

There are lots of people in charge of arts organizations in B.C. who would love to be planning their shows and exhibitions for 2012, if only they knew what their budgets were going to look like.

The provincial government pulled the rug out from under arts groups in 2010 when it held back the grants funded by gaming revenue. Shortly after being anointed as premier, Christy Clark announced that the whole gaming money grant system needed to be reviewed, with the results to be announced at the end of December.

It’s January now, and the fate of our unlucky gamblers’ money is still unknown.

Slow government decision-making

is nothing new. But it adds insult to injury to leave artists guessing after forcing them to endure some very tough years. Performers and venues aren’t booked the week before.

Rehearsals take time. Even if the news is good, it takes months of planning to put that money to its best use. Delaying the decision means those scarce dollars won’t generate the return they could.

It’s worth noting that arts funding is often held up as the social payoff for the social costs that come with gambling.

While it’s tough for the arts to be seen with their hands out, we subsidize all sorts of other industries too.

Dollars spent today mean more jobs tomorrow — jobs that will eventually move elsewhere if nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. Subsidies are of little use without certainty.

A Vancouver Sun oped piece quickly appeared, ostensibly written by the head of Whistler Outdoor Adventures, owner of the dogs, but in my nostrils reeking of a damage-control opus stroked by a PR professional. Nothing has been proven in court; and typical of our foot-dragging system, no charges yet laid. No B.C. story in 2011 caused such massive revulsion.

Not to suggest this is the only vile act committed in the name of fine cuisine. A Chinese-American described in a U.S. magazine that she and her young daughter, visiting China, were appalled seeing legs being cut off live frogs to

satisfy the mania for freshness.

All praise then to the courage of the ethnic, mostly young Chinese revolted by shark fin harvesting, among them Claudia Li of Shark Truth and Anthony Marr of Vancouver, and Toronto Coun. Kristyn Wong-Tam. Among my many shames, by the way, my vegetarianism is wilting like old lettuce in our fridge.

If the above three items suggest I’m more sympathetic to animal life than to people, I’ll wear it.

Everything’s Fine in West Vancouver Award: George Pajari produced a fact-andfigures-filled 32-page dossier, as dense as a government report appendix, to support his claim of West Vancouver Library Board and Library Foundation extravagance. This column praised West Van chief administrative officer Grant McRadu for promising to investigate Pajari’s criticisms.

Here, verbatim, as recorded by invaluable councilwatcher Carolanne Reynolds — declaration of interest, Pajari’s spouse — is McRadu’s

A hard right turn onto a rocky road

THE federal government’s decidedly right-ward shift has some potentially big implications for British Columbia and whichever party forms the next government here.

It also has the chance of making the political tightrope Premier Christy Clark has been walking when it comes to relations with the Harper government that much trickier to navigate.

Many have long wondered just how rightwing Prime Minister Stephen Harper was, and the early indications after the last election are that he has moved his government to a footing that is more to the hard right than anything seen previously.

Emboldened by the fact that he now has a solid majority in the House of Commons, Harper seems prepared to shape policies more along ideological lines than anything else.

For example, his new tough-on-crime legislation appeases those in the party who advocate a much more conservative approach to law enforcement.

But it flies in the face of statistics that show the crime rate is actually dropping and that some long-held conservative crime-fighting

policies (i.e. the failing war on drugs) don’t work.

The legislation also means added costs for provinces that administer most of the criminal justice system.

British Columbia is already struggling with a lack of judges and sheriffs (to name just two areas of concern), and putting even more people through the system means more funding will be required.

But provincial governments shouldn’t look for much help from Ottawa if the Harper government’s action in another key policy area — health care — is any indication.

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty recently announced a new policy regarding future health funding transfers from Ottawa to the provinces.

The impact of the new policy won’t be felt much for the next few years.

But starting in 2016, the federal share of health care funding will be tied directly to the performance of the country’s economy.

This will inevitably mean fewer dollars going out the door to the provinces.

There’s no sign healthcare costs are going to decrease anytime soon, so any shortfall will have to be covered by — guess who? — the provincial governments.

Flaherty’s policy also suggests the Harper government may be less interested in maintaining a strong public healthcare system, which would certainly fit a right-wing perspective.

One has to wonder whether that government will weaken the Canada Health Act to allow for such things as user fees and an even larger presence of private health care.

This brings me to that political tightrope Clark is walking.

While most provincial finance ministers blasted Flaherty for his arbitrary cuts to their funding, B.C. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon was warmly supportive, lauding the fact Flaherty had brought “certainty” to the situation.

It wasn’t hard to connect some dots here.

directly tied to ensuring it doesn’t lose significant support among conservative voters.

Therefore, fighting with a federal Conservative government is fraught with peril, which may explain Falcon’s positive reaction.

It will be interesting to see whether the Clark government can hold back if Flaherty’s next budget contains a lot of aggressive cost-cutting measures, which could have an impact on federal services in this province.

The Clark government may suffer collateral damage from any significant public outcry over federal spending cuts, and of course that may compound problems arising from the next provincial budget, which isn’t expected to be very rosy either.

And who knows what other policies will arise from Harper’s right-wing direction?

One thing to keep an eye on is the proposed Enbridge pipeline to Kitimat.

It appears his government does not view environmental protection as a top priority (given its abandonment of

the Kyoto accord), and that may be another signal the government will push for the pipeline’s construction.

On another front, British Columbia’s main representative in the federal cabinet — the capable James Moore — was quick to shoot down a Conservative backbencher’s suggestion they outlaw abortion, which suggests the religious right has yet to gain a foothold in the government.

But the Tea Party types that no doubt exist among the Conservative faithful may sense that, with a majority in place, now is the time to push for those policies Harper wouldn’t go near when he needed support from New Democrats and Liberals.

Now Harper holds all the cards. The opposition parties are leaderless and have uncertain futures.

We shall have to wait to see how far he goes, and how big an impact his policies have on this province.

Mailbox Stupid editorial no real answer Dear Editor: Regarding your Dec. 11 editorial, Forked Tongue: Wow! It is Mr. Harper’s fault that Attawaspiskat residents are living in tents and shacks with no heat and electricity. I well remember Mr. Chrétien’s attempt to improve conditions on the reserves. I have worked in the North and I am disgusted with your editorial which is so Liberal, so stupid and so wrong. Chuck Strahl did indeed recognize that there are problems on reserves, problems which have been ongoing for 40 years without resolution because tribal management knows the answer: Give us more money.

Get off your Liberal high horse.ThisisnotaConservative, NDP or Liberal problem; it is a Canadian problem that even the grand chief has acknowledged.

May I suggest that you write to the minister of aboriginal and northern affairs and explain how you would solve the problems on this reserve. Writing stupid editorials is really not the way to do it.

SHOULD a volunteer who spends six consecutive years on the North Vancouver recreation commission

receive a lifetime pass in recognition of their service?

That was the question debated by the City of North Vancouver’s council Dec. 12.

The commission had such a policy for many years before

dropping it in 2007. At last month’s meeting, Coun. Craig Keating attempted to revive the practice for city volunteers through the municipality’s funding of the commission.

“I believe that service on the recreation commission — of all the boards and agencies

that the city asks the public to serve on — is quite distinct,” he said. “First, the scope and scale and the kinds of programs and financial responsibilities that members of the commission are in charge of: It has a budget that approaches $20 million, the size of a small municipality.

Unlike many other boards and committees we have in the city, members are asked to sit on all kinds of sub-committees: the personnel committee, policy committee,financialcommittee, audit committee, a wide variety of other committees.”

usually have a meeting every week.

“It’s a very substantial obligation that citizen members have,” he said.

Coun.

Don Bell acknowledged the size of the commission’s budget, but said it’s unfair to reward volunteers on one board and ignore the city’s other volunteer bodies.

“I don’t see the need to distinguish between them, unless we want to establish a policy of some kind,” he said.

“I don’t want it to be the plum where you get on there and get a lifetime pass.”

Bell said the commission could reward “an exceptional contribution” if it chose to.

“I don’t think it’s exceptional to simply serve for six years,” he said.

Coun. Pam Bookham said the price of an adult pass, multiplied by 20 years, came in at $7,798.93.

“I consider that to be extremely generous,” she said.

“I too am not comfortable with this. . . . I just do not see the need to recognize this one group of citizen volunteers when we do not do that for other citizen volunteers who provide us with valuable insight and advice.”

Coun. Guy Heywood, a former commission chair, said it was misleading to use the price of the pass to determine the cost. He noted that both Bell and Mayor Darrell Mussatto had been awarded such passes and rarely if ever made use of them.

“The opportunity cost isn’t $380 per year,” he said, adding that no current or former commission member had lobbied or requested any reward for their time.

But, he continued, “I think there’s a broader question of recognition that is appropriate to deal with in a larger forum. . . That’s something we don’t do enough of.”

Coun. Rod Clark recalled his 10 years as a volunteer on the board of Lions Gate Hospital.

“It was a $50-million operation in 1981,” he said.

“It dwarfed the City of North Vancouver. That involvement was, I would suggest, even more strenuous and demanding than the recreation commission. We had to talk about implants and all kinds of healthcare issues. . . .

I was on lots of committees: the audit committee, the healthcare committee, the facilities committee, the volunteers committees, tons of different committees.

“It was a very involved time, but I don’t get free healthcare.

I can’t go and check myself into Lions Gate because I spent 10 years on the board and I would never expect that.

I did it because I loved my community.”

Following Mussatto’s suggestion that the city could potentially pay for former commissioners’ individual visits rather than buy a pass, Keating’s motion was amended to ask for a staff report on ways of rewarding recreation commission service. It passed by a 4-3 vote, with Bell, Bookham and Clark in opposition.

Annex demolished to make way for new mental health centre DEMOLITION crews knocked down the 69year-old annex at Lions Gate Hospital Tuesday, clearing way for a new mental health facility.

Dubbed the HOpe Centre, the new $62-million building will replace the dilapidated Activation building as the home of mental health services.

Judy Savage, president of the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, said the demolition was a major milestone after months of fundraising for the project.

“It’s a great way to start the new year,” she said. “It was significant for so many people who were there to see that the project was actually starting, because we’ve talked about it for so many years, and we’ve seen the need for so long.”

The foundation has raised $24.4 million out of a final goal of $25 million, with the remaining $37-million cost to be borne by the province.

The four-storey building will house 26 inpatient rooms, each with its own bathroom, along with nine ambulance bays and space to teach 100 medical students and residents each month.

Site clearing will continue until the summer, when construction will begin. The new centre is expected to be finished by the end of 2013.

INQUIRING REPORTER THE changing of the calendar seems like an appropriate time to turn over a new leaf. Tradition is that with a fresh start to a new year comes New Year’s resolutions, promises that this time is going to be different.

Eating better, getting more exercise, quitting smoking or quitting gnawing on your fingernails are all old favourites. Do people still make resolutions?

Vandals cut Internet to thousands 5,400 homes left without service after bridge cable severed

Telus has said it’s baffled by the motivation for the damage.

The cable under of the north end of the bridge was severed at about 4 a.m. Dec. 30, initially affecting TV and Internet users as far afield as Squamish.

Telus was able quickly to reroute much of that service, but 5,400 users remained without Internet until midnight.

Nothing was stolen and Shawn Hall, spokesman for Telus, said this is the first time he’s heard of vandalism of cables such as this.

“I have no idea why,” he said, asked about the culprits’ possible motive. “It’s a pretty significant crime when you think of it; you’re cutting service to thousands of people. It might seem like a victimless crime, but it certainly is not.”

Crews closed off a lane on the crossing from about 7 p.m. until midnight to perform repairs, said Hall.

He said the cost to Telus was significant, but couldn’t put a dollar figure on it.

RCMP spokesman Richard De Jong said there is no copper or other valuable metals in fibre-optic cables worth stealing, and estimated damages at more than $5,000.

Police have no witnesses or suspects, he said.

Watch for misrepresentation in 2012 Better Business Bureau warns consumers about popular scams

THE Better Business Bureau is hoping consumers will learn a lesson from past mistakes.

The organization is publicizing a list of scams to watch for in 2012 showing how scammers use misrepresentation to gain trust.

Brand spoofing Brand spoofing (a.k.a. phishing) is a general term for email, text messages and websites fabricated and sent by criminals and designed to look like they come from trusted businesses, financial institutions and government agencies in an attempt to collect personal, financial and sensitive information. If the recipient connects with the fraudulent website, any information entered into the data fields (account number, PIN, social insurance number etc.) could be recorded, collected and used for fraudulent purposes.

If you receive these messages just delete them and do not click on any links, and hang up on callers you aren’t familiar with. Never give credit information online or over the phone unless you are sure of the identity of the caller.

Advance fee loans Consumers have reported losing substantial sums of money responding to advertisements that “guarantee” loans to people, often online. Consumers complete credit applications and are told the loan has been approved and the funds will be received once a fee is paid. After payment, the loan is never received as promised.

It is illegal for a company to charge a fee in advance to obtain a loan, even if that fee is disguised as the first or last month’s payment.

Gold-buying schemes In 2011, the price of gold soared, rapidly fluctuating and averaging more than $1,735 per ounce. Similar to gold rushes of the past, a strained economy and high demand for gold resulted in many consumers selling, trading and receiving unfair returns when cashing in their gold and jewelry.

Get multiple appraisals and compare prices before selling. Be sure that jewelry of differing karats is weighed and priced separately. Have jewels such as diamonds priced separately from the gold they are contained in.

Financial elder abuse Common financial elder abuse frauds include tricking seniors into giving out private banking information; encouraging unnecessary home repair work, telemarketing and mail fraud; and swindles by

family or friends that result in seniors giving up money, property, personal information and decision making capacity.

Most elder abuse happens to a senior by someone they know, such as a family member, friend or caregiver. Signs a senior is being financially abused include: missing belongings, unusual activity in bank accounts, suspicious stories, sudden changes in power of attorney or wills, bounced cheques and numerous unpaid bills.

Power-saving claims The switch to Smart Meters in B.C. fostered a rise in false claims and deceptive ads by some scammers selling energy conservation devices. Consumers reported purchasing a number of power-saving devices they claim did not work.

Always check out a company’s BBB Business Review (bbb.org) first and report deceptive advertising and business claims to your local BBB. Door-to-door sales Each year a variety of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople use high pressure sales tactics to frighten people into purchasing expensive, substandard, often unneeded products and services. Be wary of overly aggressive sales people selling everything from alarm systems to vacuums and home upgrades or maintenance.

Before making any purchase, take the time to do your due diligence, getting the name and location of the company and ensuring all details and verbal promises are included in a contract.

Virus-fixing scheme The caller warns that if the problem is not solved, the computer will become unusable. In order to “fix” it, the computer owner is directed to a website and told to download a program, plus pay a fee for a subscription to this preventative service. The catch: there was never anything wrong with the computer, the caller is not working for Microsoft, and the owner has downloaded to their computer damaging malware and spyware.

Check with the organization directly that the caller is claiming to be from, using the contact numbers found on their website. Do not provide any personal information to avoid identity theft. Never provide credit or debit card information for payment.

Penny auctions Online ads, often designed to look like news reports, are cropping up on popular websites claiming that you can get great deals on iPads and other electronics with online penny auctions. Users set up an account and purchase bids with a credit or debit card; each individual bid may cost less than a dollar and are often sold in bundles of 100 or more. Every item has a countdown clock and as people bid, the cost of the item goes up incrementally and more time is added to the clock. Even if you don’t win the item, you still have to

pay for the bids you placed which can add up over time.

Before providing any personal information or signing up for any “free” trial with a penny auction, read all of the fine print carefully on the website. Pay close attention to details on signup and annual fees, minimum bidding requirements, maximum prize amounts and how to get a refund. Before bidding on an item, research how much it costs elsewhere. Watch your credit card for unexpected charges.

ALICIA Hansen’s musical influences are diverse: free improvised jazz, famed composers including Prokofiev and Stravinsky, and avant-garde and experimental indie forces PJ Harvey, Joanna Newsom and Björk.

While all are evident on her sonically explorative debut record, Fractography, so too is the influence of her personal life, which she explores in dramatic detail.

“It was never something that I set out with an intention to do,” says Hansen. “I never thought, ‘I’m going to write personal songs,’ that’s just what came out. I have found that songwriting is the perfect vehicle for me for expressing myself and so I guess that’s why they’re so personal.”

The album of 11 original songs takes its name from the study of surface fractures to determine the cause of failure.

“I happened upon that word and I just thought that it was the perfect metaphor for the album because the songs were all looking at different difficult periods, different difficult things that happened to me in my life,” says Hansen.

“I was going through a really, really rough, dark period when I made that album. It seems to be kind of an album about looking at and really bringing to light all of the painful and dark things that caused this difficult period.”

Songs include “Alcoholic,” about being with an addict and “Poison Tree” with a philanderer, and “Fractograph” about her own battle with anorexia.

“Everything sort of culminated in that period of my life and that was sort of the result, I guess, that was the main outcome, was that battle with anorexia,” she says.

The Vancouver native and current Bowen Island resident started studying music at age four, piano and then voice. She worked her way through the Royal Conservatory program and went on to study classical voice at the University of British Columbia as well as received a degree in jazz piano from Vancouver Community College.

Hansen sang with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, on and off for half a dozen seasons, most recently from 2008 to 2010.

“Singing with the chamber choir has always been just one of my musical activities,” she says. “As soon as I started learning jazz piano I started writing music.”

Fractography came about thanks to her being awarded a Canada Council for the Arts Grant.

“It came at just the right time because a lot of things were changing in my life and I wasn’t sure what I was going to be doing so I ended up putting all of my energies into that and made this album with all these incredible musicians and quit the chamber choir and now just been focusing totally on my music,” she says.

Fractography’s instrumental tracks were recorded at The Hive in Burnaby and the vocals at Penticton’s The Orchard.

“It was quite a process,” says Hansen.

IT was a daunting enough task to adapt Stieg Larsson’s provocative bestselling novels for the big screen: imagine remaking a superlative foreign language film trilogy for an English audience.

Less than 10 per cent of the Swedish film’s payday came from this side of the Atlantic, however, so a remake aimed at a subtitlephobic North American audience was inevitable.

Mercifully, David Fincher proves up to the challenge with his take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, starring Daniel Craig as rumpled hero Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, the punky computer hacker who, unless you’ve read the books or seen the films, nearly defies description.

Andrei Tarkovsky Retrospective showcases six of the seven feature films made

The film opens with Mikael’s fall from grace as co-editor of a Swedish news magazine, sued for libel and bankrupted by hefty fines. Soon after, Mikael is summoned to a meeting in the north country, to a frigid and isolated manor four hours by train from Stockholm, where he is tasked with solving the 40year-old murder of Harriet Vanger.

Mikael needs the money, so he’s in. Plus he’s intrigued: the high-placed, well moneyed Vanger family is littered with Nazis and abuse of one kind or another; they all live on an island, and don’t speak to one another. And despite the fact that Harriet has been missing and presumed dead for decades, someone sends a tormenting yearly reminder to Vanger patriarch Henrik (Christopher Plummer).

Lisbeth is solicited by Mikael because of her superior computer hacking and sleuthing skills (she did the background check on him) and the two find themselves in increasingly intense and dangerous situations as the investigation progresses.

Running parallel to the mystery is the pathetic plight of Lisbeth, now an adult ward of the state and under the care of a masochistic psychiatrist (Yorick van Wageningen), who abuses his power horrifically. These scenes, and Lisbeth’s revenge, are just as gruelling for the viewer as those in director Niels

Arden Oplev’s Swedish original. There’s a razor-thin line here between art and really vile porn, so tread carefully.

Thought too good-looking to play Mikael, Craig proves just craggy and sallow enough to effectively portray the chainsmoking journalist (a far cry from Craig’s famous teeny-trunks emergence from the surf in Casino Royale). That he lets himself be seduced without protest by an emotionally damaged girl not that far in age from his own daughter is just as cagey here as it was in the original, but if you view Mikael as almost as damaged, it almost works.

Mara, known mostly before now as that girl in the bar scene of The Social Network, throws herself into the role, body (all of it) and soul. At first glance the actor only has to channel “weird” and “intense”, but these would be nothing without the fragility Mara brings to her seemingly tough-as-nails character.

The film zips stylishly along, even at 158 minutes, and sets up a sequel nicely. Production value is high, as it should be with a budget of $90 million (versus $13 million for the Swedish original), and makes Sweden look like one of the most dangerous places in the world in which to grow up.

(They don’t tell you that in the Ikea catalogue.) No tangible improvement on the original film, but this Girl is sure to be a hit with English-speaking viewers.

“Producer Aaron Joyce was really fantastic for me to work with, we did a lot of work together on the arrangements ahead of time. He and Jesse Gander, the engineer, were just wonderful creative forces to work with. And, I got to work with the wonderful band that’s on the album,” she adds.

BECKETT William Alexander (Bill) Dec. 21, 1939 – Dec. 29, 2011 It is with profound sadness to announce the passing of Bill to everyone who knew him. He died peacefully in his home, in the afternoon hours of December 29, after a long battle of illness. He is survived by his wife June. Bill will be sadly missed by his daughter Tracey (Ross) and Tyrone, son Darren, grandsons Stuart and Alex. He was predeceased by his 4 older siblings; brother George and sisters Jean, Bev and Ann. At Dad’s request no funeral service will be held.

BEZEREDI, Doris Lily June 20, 1934 - Dec. 31, 2011 Doris passed away peacefully on December 31, 2011 after a sudden illness at Lions Gate Hospital. Doris lived in Port Moody after her move from Montreal before moving to West Vancouver. BRYAN, Bernadette (nee Walsh) Feb. 11, 1930 - Dec. 30, 2011 Born in Leicester, England, Bernadette met and fell in love with Terence Bryan in Art College. They were both 16. They were later married in Leicester and had three babies within four years (mom was tougher than she looked). They came to Canada in 1965 and never looked back.

Mom made a home here in which everyone felt welcome. She was an accomplished calligrapher and artist. She made a mean roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and unrivalled mincemeat tarts. She lived life passionately and fully, loved unconditionally, taught us the power of forgiveness and the value of all the things money can’t buy. We’ll miss her more than words can say. Please help us celebrate Bernadette’s life on Sunday, Jan. 29, between 2 and 5 p.m. at the family home in North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local Food Bank. And thanks to all the nurses in LGH’s palliative care ward, especially Jennifer Bernadette.

GRASSOM, Janet (Netta) March 12, 1936 - Dec. 19, 2011 Grassom, Janet (nee Skinner) peacefully passed on December 19th 2011. Netta is predeceased by her husband Jack (2005) and her daughter Jan (2010).

Survived by her daughter Jacki (Rick), son-in-law Erwin, grandchildren Tiffany, Ryan, Shawna & Mikayla, and sisters Jean (Australia) & Betty (Scotland). Born and raised in Stenhousemuir, Scotland in 1936, she married Jack in 1957 and began their family. In 1967 the family moved to Toronto, ON where they began life in a new country. In 1988 Netta & Jack moved to North Vancouver, BC where Netta retired. They enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, Saturday Bingo at the Legion and traveling with Jan & Erwin. Netta enjoyed gossip magazines, the Young and the Restless, watching figure skating, and visiting with her friends at the Kiwanis Lynn Manor. She will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Margaret Patricia “Pat”, son Andrew (Anne), daughters Jean (Brian) and Hazel (Peter), six grandchildren David, Joanne, Colin, Julie, Mark and Emily, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, brothers Douglas, Joe and Sandy, sisters Chrissie and Betsy. Bill was born in Ayrshire, Scotland to a family of 14 on November 15, 1916. He was a kind and gentle man who treasured his family. He lived a full life and was loved and respected by many. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Kiwanis Manor Assisted Living for their care and concern, and also to Dr. Andrea Byman and the nurses on 4 East at Lions Gate Hospital. BMW has tried to pin the term Sports Activity Vehicle on other models but none have really lived up to the energetic idea until now — the new X1 is a benchmark vehicle that combines sporty handling with practicality.

REJECTING the more commonplace Sports Utility Vehicle term, BMW has always referred the X3 and X5 as Sports Activity Vehicles.

It’s an interesting distinction, reinforcing an image of BMW owners as energetic people with on-thego lifestyles. However, while the X3 and X5 are perfectly good vehicles, they really don’t stand out from the SUV competition well enough to justify their own category.

For the SAV acronym to stick we’re going to need something much closer in spirit to your wonderful sports sedans; descriptions like

nimble, quick, fast and agile come to my mind.

In other words, something like the new X1.

If there’s ever going to be a “true” Sports Activity Vehicle segment, the newest BMW is the benchmark.

Slotting in between the 3 Series sedan (on which it’s based) and the bigger X3, the X1 combines the sedan’s size and handling with the SUV’s practicality and personality.

Unlike the 3 Series Touring wagon, the X1 comes across as a fun-loving and fun-todrive car, rather than a family mover. And unlike the larger X3, the X1 feels much more like a sports sedan than an SUV — it’s a vehicle that wants to be driven. As a result, Canadians have been quick to get onboard with the X1, which has sold well thus far.

The X1’s strong start is very important, because the competition is heating up. Technically, Infiniti was here first with the EX35,

and Lexus is busily prepping the upcoming CX300h, a compact hybrid crossover.

However, the biggest threat will likely come from Audi with the similarly themed Q3. Audi’s entry might not drive as well as the X1 though, because the BMW X1’s performance is seriously impressive already and Audi’s model is not yet confirmed for Canadian market.

Looking at the bigger picture, there’s a noticeable shift that echoes the movement from large sedans to mid-size and compact sedans roughly two decades ago. After years of larger and larger SUVs, consumers are once again realizing that we

Dodge set to relaunch the Dart

Dodge dusts off Dart nameplate Speaking of super-sedans, Dodge’s Charger SRT8 is a wholelotta barn-burnin’ muscle for a surprisingly low entry cost. It’s big, it’s incredibly powerful, and it sort of makes you feel like the Dukes of Hazzard’s Waylon Jennings is narrating your entire commute.

But just like the aforementioned Cadillac, not everybody wants a full-size moonshine-hauler for day-to-day duties. To stay competitive, Dodge needs an attractive compact sedan that carries that striking muscle-car styling in a smaller package.

Luckily for Dodge, their Fiat owners are really quite good at the compact Euro-sedan. What they’ve done is take the bones of an Alfa-Romeo Giulietta (itself a very pretty car), slap on some Daisy Dukes, and call it the Dart.

Also taking a bow at the Detroit Auto Show in just three days, the Dart promises to be a great-looking little sedan, and should be available with an efficient turbocharged powerplant, and no doubt a rollickin’ hi-po R/T version will be on the way as well.

2013 Cadillac ATS takes the fight To BMW There’s little doubt that Cadillac has been undergoing something of a renaissance of late. Still, even a luxury manufacturer can’t be all 500+ horsepower super-sedans and giant SUVs boasting more chrome than the entire 1950s Studebaker lineup.

Cadillac needs a volume-seller.

Slotting in below the CTS sedan, the upcoming ATS compact luxury car takes on the BMW 3-series (and 1-Series), the Acura TL, and the Mercedes-Benz C-class, among others. Powerplants are rumoured to be a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and the 3.6-litre V-6 that GM stuffs into pretty much everything. Better yet, there’s also a Nürburgring-tuned sports version that’ll come packing a lightweight and powerful 2.0-litre turbo with around 270 h.p.

When can you expect to see the compact Caddy? The ATS should be taking its bows at the fast-approaching Detroit Auto Show, and possibly find its way to showrooms by this fall.

Why, you check out the all-new Genesis Coupe, unveiling shortly at — you guessed it — the Detroit Auto Show. Lexus LF-LC concept showcases design Of all the Japanese luxury manufacturers, only Lexus seems to have truly gone toe-to-toe with the German marques (although Infiniti is fast catching up). If there’s a complaint though, it’s perhaps that Lexus can be a bit too conservative.

Nothing, however, is conservative about their latest concept, a 2+2 tourer that evokes the swoopy angularity of the nearunobtainable LF-A supercar, but with a rumoured hybrid powertrain, rather than a yowling V-10.

It’s currently just a concept, but some of the LF-LC concept’s styling cues can be already seen in the upcoming GS sedan. Also, with a few tweaks, the LF-LC could theoretically slip in below the LF-A as a competitor for the Mercedes-Benz SL-class coupes and the like.

New X1 a benchmark for fledgling Sport Activity Vehicle class

can get by with vehicles that are smaller and more fuel efficient — even better if those same vehicles are a blast to drive.

You can expect the X1 to be at the head of the fledgling SAV market next year, in the same way that the 3 Series continues to be the standard against which all other sports sedans are measured.

Design Shorter than the X3 in both height and length, the X1’s design is closely patterned after the larger SUV, but with a longer hood that’s more in line with the 3 Series sedan.

From some angles, however, the proportions are slightly off — that’s particularly the case

from the side, where the hood just seems a bit too long for the rest of the body.

The front-end styling is pleasing to the eye, thanks to a bold grille and the unusual placement of the fog lamps midway up the fascia to create what BMW calls a “three-eyed” look. The strong design continues around to the excellent rear hatch and vibrant LED taillights.

Inside, the X1 is simple and utilitarian.

It’s not fancy by any means, but it does have that teutonic feel that expresses simplicity and business-like confidence that is classic BMW. This is no real surprise, as BMW has always favoured function over form, but it wouldn’t hurt to balance the scales a bit more towards luxury.

The build quality is excellent, and the overall comfort level of the seats — front and back — are great in terms of providing supportive and sporty feel.

Performance A turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four is the only initial engine choice in Canada, producing 241 horsepower and 258 footpounds of torque. It’s a superb engine, with exceptional low-end torque that peaks at 1,250 r.p.m., and comes with a slick, eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system is standard, pushing 60 per cent of power to the rear wheels in normal conditions, and combining with the impressive suspension and near 50:50 weight distribution to give the X1

amazing balance and agility.

It’s a high compliment to say that the X1 feels like a 3 Series sedan, but it’s not at all far-fetched. The slightly heavy steering is particularly noteworthy, providing considerable road feedback and direct control that make the X1 feel like the compact and nimble vehicle it’s meant to be. In comparison to other cars in the small SUV category, the X1 drives with much more confidence and road feel.

For me personally, driving the X1 was so much fun that I could not imagine driving any other SUVs in this segment that will provide more fun factor.

The front seat area provides plenty of space, while it can be a bit tight at the back. Overall, the interior feels reasonably spacious

and the optional panorama sunroof brings plenty of sun into the cabin.

Storage space is understandably limited up front. A small glovebox and centre console are offset by

large door pockets, and X1s not equipped with navigation systems gain another bin where the screen would go.

Cupholders are an annoyance, however, as BMW could only find space for one between

the front seats — the second cupholder is a bit of an afterthought as it is installed onto the centre console with an attachment that sticks out of the dash area.

Buttons and switches are

mostly where they need to be, and the controls are within reach.

In the back, BMW has made excellent use of the available space, maximizing the cargo area and creating a large, flat floor when the rear seats are folded. The seats split 40/20/40 for versatility,
