Election 2013

Liberal grabs NDP seat Pitt Meadows Councillor Doug Bing will head to Victoria as the new Liberal MLA for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows riding. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Maria Rantanen/TIMES

Doug Bing (above) celebrated his win with his wife Helen at his side. David Murray (inset) was checking numbers with Elizabeth Rosenau as results were coming in. Cheryl Ashlie (right) was Bing’s campaign manager. At the end of the evening, local mayors Deb Walters and Ernie Daykin came to congratulate Bing (below). being in opposition. The Green party candidate Michael Patterson received 1,953 votes (about nine per cent) while the BC Conservative candidate Manuel “Mike” Pratas received 540 votes (about 2.5 per cent). Pratas was listed on the ballot with no affiliation because of a glitch in the BC Conservatives’ paperwork, but the party said they endorsed him as their candidate. These numbers will most likely change after absentee ballots, mail-in ballots, and ballots cast at the district electoral office are counted. Elections BC will starting counting the final numbers on May 27. Bing said he will take the rest of the week off, but has to make decisions soon, for example, setting up his constituency office. Rosenau said she’s going to focus on her family, friends, and volunteering with Special Olympics.

The Liberal strategy leading up to Tuesday’s election was to focus on the economy. But the NDP also wanted to talk about the economy, and because the Liberals wanted the discussion to centre around who would be better at managing the economy, it seemed to work in the Liberals’ favour, said Doug Bing. He beat the NDP candidate Elizabeth Rosenau to become the member of the legislative assembly for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, a seat held for two terms by retiring NDP MLA Michael Sather. “We just had smiles on our faces because that was our issue...” Bing said. At times, the message was repeated “ad nauseum,” Bing said, but “it stuck.” The day after the election, Rosenau said she felt the NDP’s campaign was “too passive” and not running a negative campaign with mudslinging – which Rosenau said makes people cynical about politics – “wasn’t a winning strategy.” “In the end, we probably didn’t frame the Liberals the way we should have – they framed us, we didn’t frame them,” she said. The Liberals started the campaign with their backs against the wall, Bing said, but he felt the party ran a better campaign and worked harder than the NDP. “The NDP thought they had the election won... that backfired on them,” he said. Bing, who’s also expected to remain as a Pitt Meadows councillor – at least for the time being, will sit as an MLA in government. He hopes he can be a “voice for the community,” and as part of government, he would like to advocate for things like transportation issues and fixing the intersection at Harris and Lougheed. Bing will be joining a majority Liberal government, with 50 seats to the NDP’s 33, in Victoria alongside Marc Dalton who was re-elected Tuesday night. With all the ballot boxes counted, Bing received 9,860 (about 46 per cent) votes while the NDP’s Elizabeth Rosenau received 9,179 (about 43 per cent) – a difference of 681 votes. On election night, when the results showed Bing was going to win the riding, he said he was “elated, excited, relieved.” “It’s been a long, hard fight – very tiring,” Bing said. “It makes all the time and effort worthwhile.” Bing said it was “very exciting” to be in government and the opportunities will be “huge” compared to

A Maple Ridge love story cut short by car crash

Two cancer survivors were building a life together. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

He modelled for her calendar, he took care of her when she was sick, and helped her friends and family. It was a love story cut short by a car crash three weeks ago in Maple Ridge. Recently retired Maple Ridge teacher Nina Fowell and her partner Dirk Blackburn had

found each other five years ago, both looking for companionship and just someone to talk to. Soon after meeting, in July 2008, however, Fowell was diagnosed with breast cancer, and Blackburn stepped up to support her through the treatment. “He didn’t sign up for that – he could have split,” Fowell said. But he didn’t, she said. Rather, he quit his job at Cultus Lake and “moved in and took care of me.” “He brought me out of the dark,” she said. But not only did he look after her, Fowell

GOLF AND DINE May 4-31, 2013

On Wednesday, Dalton told The TIMES that he thinks voters were worried about the financial implications of voting for the NDP. “There were economic management issues, and the about-turn that Adrian Dix had about the Kinder Morgan pipeline. There were significant repercussions [for that decision],” Dalton said. Green Party of BC candidate Alex Pope received 1,654 votes (8.2 per cent) and BC Conservative Chad Thompson got 1,075 votes (5.33 per cent). “We are all pretty amazed from the response of the province,” Dalton said.

said, he took care of the yard and the car – and his kindness and generosity, with time, reached beyond Fowell and her family. He was continuously fixing things and helping her friends with anything that needed to be repaired or renovated. Fowell said she and Blackburn were like “kindred” souls, in that they scrounged and looked for bargains and creative solutions. If something was needed, for example, at the store owned by Fowell and her son Trevor, “Ask Dirk, he would have a solution – or he would find it,” she said.

Foul play likely in man’s death

Investigators are asking for help to solve a murder near Colony Farms. by Sylver McLaren

smclaren@mrtimes.com

A body found this weekend in the Colony Farm area of Coquitlam has been identified as that of a Maple Ridge man. An investigator with the integrated homicide investigation team (IHIT) identified him as Clifford Arthur Devitt, 44. Devitt, who was described by police as a transient, was due in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Monday, May 13, for a trial confirmation hearing for allegedly committing theft of property valued at less

than $5,000. He had a long list of non-violent charges ranging from 1998 to 2013. “Our investigators can reveal that Mr. Devitt was a transient person who mostly frequented the areas of Maple Ridge, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam. A bicycle which investigators believe belongs to Mr. Devitt was also found near his body,” said IHIT Sgt. Bari Emam. Mounties were called to the discovery of the body on a trail in the Colony Farm area of Coquitlam on Sunday, May 12 and determined the victim likely met with foul play. Anyone with information in regards to the crime is asked to contact the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Our View

Leadership fails numbers

The people have spoken… or at least, slightly more than half of them have. And therein lies the real tragedy of Tuesday’s election results – that, and the apparent lack of understanding of what it has all been about. About 48 per cent of B.C. residents eligible to vote stayed home despite all Elections BC did to make voting as easy as possible for even the laziest of voters. The pundits and political backroom strategists will conspicuously rend their garments and gnash their Scan this teeth over the disparity page with between pollsters’ predictions and what actually fell out of the ballot boxes. And there will be much ado about “voter apathy” or “voter fatigue” or other such euphemisms that sidestep the real responsibility for the poor participation rate in our fading democracy: a lack of real choices. We thank all the candidates who, bless their hearts, offered their services, often at great personal cost, to their communities and their province. And we congratulate the winners. But we are left in awe at the leadership that fell so far short of the mark. Christy Clark, of all people, should not take Tuesday night’s BC Liberal win as an endorsement, but rather it was a reprieve – she was not able to inspire confidence of voters in her own riding. Her attack ads against NDP leader Adrian Dix were clearly effective. But realistically, he was an easy target. Green leader Jane Sterk may have offered idealism, but was unable to convince anyone she has a real, comprehensive vision. And John Cummins was unable to put a credible right wing alternative on the table. Many of those who bothered to vote merely voted for the devil they knew. All of Elections BC’s hard work will be for naught, until eligible voters believe they can choose real leadership. – B.G.

Federal politics

Government adding accountability

Dear Editor, Unfortunately, Mr. Hanford’s claims are not supported by the facts [Democratic process under attack, May 9 Letters, TIMES]. The use of omnibus legislation to implement a budget is hardly a new idea in Canadian politics, and actually occurs frequently at the federal and provincial levels.

Bills C-38 and 45 went through careful scrutiny and debate by democratically elected representatives of all parties. The claim that this runs contrary to Canadian democracy is simply not true. In fact, our government has brought in legislation that increases accountability and transparency within government. This includes

Driving

Take away speeders’ cars

Dear Editor, Those irresponsible nit wits who go at speeds nearly double the posted limit need to have their cars seized. Apparently, it has to hurt a lot to have any noticeable effect. They will sweat for a week, but after they obtain their vehicles, no doubt whatsoever, they’ll do it again. Until the legislation becomes absolutely draconian, they’ll do it again for sure. Why not take their cars for perhaps a month or more? Their drivers’ licence should be forfeited, too. They need it for their job? That’s tough, eh? How many people will have to die or be seriously injured before officialdom takes a heavy-duty proactive stand and really lowers the boom? Speeding is insane. To ignore this is absolutely nuts. Robert W. Stirling, Maple Ridge

the Federal Accountability Act, the Political Loans Accountability Act, the First Nations Financial Transparency Act, and enhancing the RCMP Accountability Act, among others. Mr. Handford wrote, “It’s not the economy versus the environment, we need both.” That’s been our government’s position all along. In fact, this government is the only one in Canadian history to have grown the economy while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That has been done by reforming environmental policy to remove costly and unnecessary bureaucratic procedures, while maintaining high environmental standards. Our government promotes responsible resource development that achieves economic growth while protecting the environment. Randy Kamp, MP, Pitt MeadowsMaple Ridge-Mission

Online publication decision ‘odd’

Dear Editor, I find it odd that you printed only a portion of Brian Belanger’s letter [Columnist spouts archaic opinion, May 9 Letters, TIMES]. After checking the fuller version of his letter online, I was stunned to see you left out only two sentences. They were the most important points he was trying to make: “If non-governmental pensions have vanished, it’s because industry has dropped the ball, with schemes like outsourcing and importing cheap labour. “Rather than wait till Mr. Robson and those on high decide that they will legislate unions out of existence, we should consider electing a government that looks more favourably on its workforce.”

If you are going to print a letter, please do not shorten them to suit your own opinions! Cherie Delainey, Maple Ridge [Editor’s note: Space constraints unfortunately force us to abridge our letters for publication in print. However, when appropriate, as in this case, we publish fuller versions of the letters online at www. mrtimes.com. While we agree that some of Mr. Belanger’s salient points appeared only in the online version, the points we retained for the print version were also important, and his general tone, critical of columnist Gordy Robson’s position on unions [Unions could soon bankrupt B.C., April 9 Just Saying, TIMES], remained intact.

Gibson ropes in rodeo gig A Maple Ridge woman released eight original songs on March 19. by Sylver McLaren

smclaren@mrtimes.com

Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is starts tomorrow and rising Maple Ridge country star Ray Gibson will be performing on the new youth stage during the weekend event. The blond-haired stunner is excited to participate, she said. “This will be my very first time performing at the Cloverdale Rodeo. I’m really looking forward to not only performing, but also experiencing a rodeo for the first time in a long time. I think the last time I went to a rodeo was when I was about seven,” Gibson said. Gibson will take part in the Youth Live Band Stage. It is a new addition to the Country Fair geared towards teens. “I think the Teens Night Club in the Alice McKay building is such a great opportunity for teens to get together and have a good time, as well as for those who want to perform,” Gibson added. “It’s difficult when you aren’t of legal age yet, as you are kind of limited to where you can go and get together with a group of people your age and have fun and dance,” she added. Gibson released eight original songs on March 19 and the next day one of the songs hit No. 25 on the country iTunes chart. “It was a dream come true for me,” she said. “I’m currently working on songs

Ray Gibson will perform for three nights at the Cloverdale Rodeo on the new youth stage. for my second EP, which you can expect to hear sometime next year. It will be a bit of a different sound than the album I just released. Let’s just say I can thank Dolly Parton and Miranda Lambert for the inspiration,” she explained. Gibson will be performing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night at 8 p.m. during the fair.

The store, Sector 2814, moved recently to a new location near the bus loop, and Blackburn was an essential part in setting it up, Fowell said. The store will include a plaque for Blackburn because “without him, that store would not be there,” she said. Blackburn had lost a kidney to cancer – a coincidence because Fowell’s first husband had also lost a kidney – perhaps she liked one-kidney men, she said jokingly. “He’d been through a lot – he was a fighter,” she said. Blackburn had a Harley and Fowell loves motorcycles – she planned to get her license but wasn’t able to when she was diagnosed with cancer. But she has fond memories of riding on the back of Blackburn’s bike, including once running out of gas on the Mission Bridge. The couple met in 2008 online and got to know each other through email. He told her that she impressed him because she was just looking for companionship and someone to talk to like her, not for money or marriage. “He started a whole new life,” Fowell said of Blackburn’s life after meeting her.

Nina Fowell’s partner was the June model in a calendar she made. When Fowell was diagnosed with cancer, she wanted to do something proactive, and not just passively deal with the disease. That’s when she came up with the idea of making a calendar of people who were bald – and hence 2010 Bald and Beautiful was born. Blackburn was the model for June – Fowell was January. After his death, Fowell was inundated with flowers and cards,.

“I don’t know anyone who didn’t like Dirk,” she said. Fowell will hold a wake for Blackburn this Sunday and Monday, starting at noon and going on until the last person has left, at her home, 12469 216th St. If anyone wants to donate money in Blackburn’s memory, it can be directed to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Kidney Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Rolling on the river

Local paddler Wes Hammer manoeuvred along the Bedford Channel Saturday afternoon. He competed in the Fort Langley Canoe Club’s Paddlers’ Classic in very muggy conditions Saturday (May 11). The regatta involved a range of paddling race boats seldom seen competing together. As well as marathon and sprint canoes and kayaks there were surfskis and OC-1s and OC-2s racing over a variety of distances. Paddlers came from as far away as Kamloops, Prince George, Vancouver Island, and Washington State to compete alongside local paddlers from the Lower Mainland.

Burrards prepare for new season

Curtis Dickson will be the catalyst for a team looking to make a big jump in the WLA standings. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

The good news for the Maple Ridge Burrards when they open the 2013 Western Lacrosse Association this Sunday: it’s a clean slate and they have no where to go but up. The bad news is (possibly): their first opponent of the 2013 campaign is the two-time defending WLA champion and Mann Cup finalist Langley Thunder. Winning their home opener against WLA’s top regular season and playoff team from 2012 could do wonders to the confidence of a Burrards squad

TIMES files

Maple Ridge Burrards leading scorer from 2012, Jarrett Davis, looked to elude a Langley Thunder defender in a WLA game last June. that finished at the bottom of the seven-team league last season with a 4-13-1 record. The Burrards will get a mammoth boost to their offence this Sunday and beyond when they welcome back Curtis Dickson, who was lim-

ited to two games in 2012. In those two games, Dickson scored eight times and added five assists. Dickson was named a NLL Second Team All-Pro this season with the National Lacrosse League’s Calgary Roughnecks. He scored in every game to rank third in the league with 42 goals, led the NLL in both game-winning goals (five) and shorthanded goals (six) and finished 10th in shooting percentage (.203). The three-year veteran and Port Coquitlam native, who played field lacrosse at the University of Delaware, was selected by the Roughnecks with the third overall pick of the 2010 draft. In 2011, Dickson finished third in WLA scoring with 78 points (including 46 goals) in 17 games. Game time at Planet Ice is 6:45 p.m., on May 19.
