ome people will be leaving the Canadian Open Fast Draw Championships with a lot more cash in their pockets. The championships July 23 and 24 are held during the Aldergrove Fair Days, and feature an array of cash prizes and trophies for the winners. Prize money ranges from $600 for the top men’s winner and $400 for the first place women to $90 for the 15th place male and up to seven placings for women ($100). Organized by the Thunderbird Fast Draw Club in conjunction with the Aldergrove Festival Society, the event is expected to bring up to three dozen shooters from around Canada and the U.S. “I think Colorado is probably the farthest,” said Karen Robinson, an organizer. The action gets started Saturday after
the 10 a.m. parade and runs until about 4 p.m, and Sunday it runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is by donation. “We have a cowboy church starting at 8:30 [a.m.],” Robinson said. “We have a fellow coming up from Texas to do the service.” There is a break in the competition on Saturday to allow for the celebrity shootout around noon. There are about 17 guest competitors ranging from local mayors and MPs, to MLAs, media personalities and municipal councillors. “Some of them are pretty darn good,” she noted. Last year’s winner was a woman who is a reporter for Burnaby Now, a sister paper to the Langley Advance. “We get hundreds of spectators,” Robinson said.
