Life in prison for Dobbs murder BY

The three people convicted in the 2007 murder of a Tsawwassen man in California were last week sentenced to life in prison. On Friday, Jackie Lynn Dunson, Fernando Antonio Benavidez and Ronald Wesley Handwerk were sentenced in Riverside County Superior Court to life in prison with no possibility of parole. All three were convicted earlier this year after a 10-day trial. Bill Dobbs, 48, was found murdered on the side of the road in Indio, California in November 2007. Dobbs was last seen alive leaving the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino with another man, later identified as Fernando Antonio Benavidez, one of the accused in the case, at around 3:45 a.m. on Nov. 26, 2007. A passing motorist found his body on the side of an Indio road the next day. His throat had been slashed. Jackie Dunson, Benavidez and Handwerk were tried together in the murder. Two other suspects, Robert Lee Dunson and Rogelio Leon

Zuniga are being tried separately. All five pleaded not guilty. Benavidez is accused of luring Dobbs to the Dunson apartment where he was allegedly beaten and robbed. Zuniga and Robert Dunson are accused of taking Dobbs to a remote area where his throat was slashed multiple times. A passing motorist found his body the next day alongside a road north of Indio. Dobbs had recently bought a home in the Indio area and was staying there with his common-law wife, Toni Dawson, at the time of his murder. “It was awful. He was tortured very, very badly,” Dawson said in an interview after the conviction in April. “They were using him like a piñata. They did all sorts of horrible things to him.” The couple had been planning on returning to Canada in the near future for Christmas. The avid golfer was a longtime member of the Beach Grove Golf Club. He had two grown children and a grandson. Dobbs had a family-owned window cleaning and janitorial company, Excelsior FILE PHOTO Buildings Maintenance. Three of the five accused in the 2007 murder of Tsawwassen resident Bill Dobbs in With files from The Province California were sentenced to life in prison last week.

Southlands public meeting delayed until fall BY

Delta will not host a public information meeting on the proposed Southlands development for at least a couple of months. Council on Monday agreed with a staff recommendation not to hold a municipal meeting on the proposal until Sept. 6 at the South Delta Recreation Centre. Submitting a formal rezoning proposal this spring, the Century Group hosted a pair of information meetings in May. However, council was told many questions have been raised about the proposed development through the referral of the application to external agencies, Delta advisory committees and the public CAO George Harvie told council the new meeting date was recommended because they want to ensure the applicant will provide thorough information. Coun. Sylvia Bishop said it’s clear much more information and clarification is needed, including projected traffic counts should it be determined large

Coun. Sylvia Bishop said Monday night that more information on the proposal is needed. amounts of fill would be required for the site. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos agreed, saying she wants details on what will take place on the 80 per cent of the land to be given to Delta, as well as the responsibility for maintenance and improvements such as drainage and irrigation. Among the many other questions is how the development would be protected from flooding, particularly in light of climate change research. Council agreed to retain consultants to prepare two independent studies, includ-

ing a flood construction level study and a storm water management study. The studies will cost a combined $125,000. Century Group president Sean Hodgins submitted a rezoning application for the first phase of what would ultimately be a 950-unit housing proposal. The first phase involves 450 residential units in various forms and densities. The proposed housing would encompass 20 per cent of the 500-plus acre Tsawwassen site, while the remaining 80 per cent would be transferred to Delta for agricultural use, public open space, greenways and the preservation of natural habitat areas. A public market is also proposed, but some of the questions raised about it includes who would operate the market and whether it could also be converted to a multi-functioning space. Many letters have come to municipal hall in recent weeks expressing opposition, however, the proposal also has many supporters. Mayor Lois Jackson noted she wants people to make sure what they’re conveying in their letters is factual and accurate.

Annual Readers’ Choice Award winners Last week the Optimist hosted its annual Readers’ Choice Awards. For the 15th year, this special edition honours and recognizes the businesses and individuals chosen the best in their category by Optimist readers. Ballots appeared in the paper in the spring and readers were asked to vote for their favourite in each category. The business or individual receiving the most votes was declared the “Readers’ Choice.” This contest showed there are a large number of businesses doing a great job in Ladner and Tsawwassen, evidenced by the fact their loyal customers took the time to enter their names on the ballot. This year we’re featuring those nine businesses that have been a readers’ favourite every year since the program began. For more on the contest and a list of the winners see pages 17-40.

CUPE contract talks not going well, says union Issues around sick leave, hours of work and benefits BY

Contract talks have not been going smoothly between Delta and the union representing its civic employees, says CUPE Local 454 president Darryl Robison. The union exchanged proposals with management at their most recent bargaining session at municipal hall two weeks ago, trying to work toward a new collective agreement. The union represents more than 850 civic employees as well as Delta police civilians and Delta Museum and Archives

Darryl Robison CUPE Local 454 president employees, but those negotiations are being held separately. Robison told the Optimist following the most recent meeting the talks didn’t go particularly well. “Talks are progressing, but not progressing as well as we’d like,” he said. Another meeting was scheduled for this week, followed by another in midJuly. In his bargaining bulletin to CUPE members several weeks ago, Robison noted he was left frustrated after talking with Corporation of Delta counterparts. He said there was little progress and negotiations at that time appeared to have stalled. His most recent bulletin following his June 15

meeting conveyed the same message that negotiations appear to be stalled. Issues of contention thus far include sick leave, hours of work including lunch breaks, and benefits. “Employers in the region appear to be deliberately slowing the pace of talks in an attempt to establish a benchmark settlement with Vancouver locals. We are closely monitoring this situation,” he told members. Members of CUPE 1698, who work for the Fraser Valley Regional Library, recently voted in favour of ratifying a four-year collective agreement. The agreement includes a two per cent wage increase in each year of the agreement with a wage re-opener in the fourth year, as well as improvements to benefits and language. Delta is a member of the library system. “We are reviewing both the Fraser Valley Regional (Library) settlement and other settlement patterns out there,” Robison told the Optimist. “We haven’t discussed wage at the table yet. We’re still in the process of negotiating and haven’t gotten into wage in any great detail.”

Trial date set for teacher facing sex assault charges BY

A trial date has been set for the Delta Secondary teacher charge with sexual assault. Robin Wait was in court Monday where a pre-trial conference was set for next month and the trial was scheduled for later in August. Wait was charged with two counts of sexual interference of a person under 16 and two counts of sexual assault after two separate incidents at the school. Police were called to the Ladner high school early last November after a young girl reported that she had been assaulted by an unknown adult near the school gym. After launching an investigation into the allegations, police arrested Wait on

Nov. 6. Delta police spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan said the second incident, which prompted the second set of charges, came to light during the initial investigation. Wait has been released on bail on a number of conditions including no contact with the victims or any witnesses, and that he not seek, obtain or continue any employment, or volunteer, in a capacity that involves being in a position of trust or authority of anyone under the age of 16. Wait is currently suspended without pay, said Delta school district spokesperson Deneka Michaud. Michaud said that the district will conduct its own internal investigation of the matter once the criminal proceedings have concluded.

Delta signed up last week to participate in a pilot project looking at the potential impacts of climate change on agriculture. Recognizing the potential significant impact of climate change on the province’s agricultural sector, the B.C. Agriculture and Food Climate Action Initiative was established by the B.C. Agriculture Council. Delta was one of three municipalities asked to take part in the project. The initiative looks at a number of areas, including developing the Agriculture Climate Change Action Plan; developing and implementing energy efficiency pilot projects; developing an energy efficiency assess-

ment tool for B.C. farms; developing and leading the first Adaptation Risk and Assessment for B.C. agriculture; and developing a website and communications materials that serve as an information source for the agriculture sector. “With a strong agricultural economy, and previous experience of projects relating to climate change adaptation, Delta would be a valuable participant in this pilot project,” states a report from staff. Mike Brotherston, Delta’s manager of climate action and environment, said the project will help in fulfilling some of the goals set out in Delta’s agriculture plan, including working with farmers to develop solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to

make farms more resilient to any future impacts of climate change by investing in adaptation strategies. The plan will also look at how farmers can potentially deal with the impacts of climate change — warmer temperatures, more intense rain and other severe weather events. “As a farming community, Delta will experience first hand the effects of climate change on agriculture,” states the staff report. Brotherston said the pilot project proposes the establishment of a local working group that will be made up of Delta residents, farming representatives, as well as staff from Delta and the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands. Coun. Ian Paton said the Delta Farmers’ Institute will also take part in the project.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre is maintaining a high streamflow advisory for the lower portion of the Fraser River. Early Friday morning, the river peaked at a flow of 11,900 cubic metres per second at Hope. The water level dropped slightly over the weekend and was flowing at about 11,000 cubic metres per second on Monday morning. The Corporation of Delta issued

an update stating that while the risk of flooding in Delta is currently low, that status is subject to change. Last week, Delta staff began daily dike patrols and the municipality’s emergency operations centre was set up to ensure a quick response should conditions change. It’s the end of an era for Cherie Saunders. The kindergarten teacher at Beach Grove Elementary is calling it a career at the end of this school year. “I’ve loved it. I’ve given it my all, but it’s time to go on to new things,” said Saunders, who’s been a teacher for 33 years, 20 of those spent at Beach Grove. Saunders started her career in Langley and spent nine years there before moving to the Delta school district and bounced around a bit between Beach Grove, Cliff Drive, Port Guichon, before settling back at Beach Grove. Saunders, who has taught grades 1 and 4 as well at Beach Grove, said she loves working with kids and enjoys teaching with tangible things.

She also gave kudos to the parents and teachers at Beach Grove. “At Beach Grove school we’ve been extremely fortunate to have such good parental support. They do fundraising that gives us the opportunity to buy materials for our classrooms we wouldn’t normally have had,” she said, adding that the other teachers are devoted to their students. As for retirement plans Saunders expects to do some sailing with her husband as well as traveling to England and South Africa. Principal Rachael Corneil said she will be sad to see Saunders go. “She’s one of those teachers who’s a pillar in the community and a pillar in the school community as well,” said Corneil.

Valedictorians from SDSS reunite briefly in Boston

Dhillon siblings at New England Journal of Medicine event A brother and sister pair of past valedictorians from South Delta Secondary School were last week reunited briefly in Boston at a ceremony marking the 200th anniversary of the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Paul Dhillon graduated from SDSS in 1999 and completed a bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of B.C. before attending the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland for his medical training. He later obtained his masters degree in disaster medicine in Italy. Jessy Dhillon was nominated as valedictorian of the 2002 graduating class and completed a degree in interdisciplinary studies before commencing her medical training in the Caribbean. The essay competition allowed for 600 entries from which 40 were chosen as NEJM scholars in each category of training, and another 33 were awarded NEJM gold and platinum awards in addition to their invitation. Drazen, the editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine at the event held on the campus of Harvard Medical School. MURPHY’S LAW It’s why I moved here, so why would I want to see it change? That’s becoming the standard question from homeowners when presented with a development proposal that runs contrary to the status quo. With Delta pretty much built out, we are seeing more and more redevelopment, yet such projects aren’t always in keeping with the neighbourhood in which they’re proposed. The folks in the Highlands area of Tsawwassen posed the question a couple of years ago when Delta was looking to upzone the neighbourhood to townhouses and I suspect those in Marina Garden Estates will do the same should a revised proposal for that development’s final phases reach a public hearing. It’s also been happening with a number of smaller proposals where new construction is often far denser than its predecessor. In many respects, it’s a fair question. It stands to reason that people, whose single biggest investment is most likely their home, don’t want to see anything change that would compromise its value or their quality of life. People often pick the neighbourhood as much as the home, so it’s understandable they would want to see its character preserved. However, Delta’s housing stock is single-family centric, so there’s not a lot to choose from for those who either don’t want, or can’t afford, something in the vicinity of 2,000 square feet and north of half a million bucks. The land to accommodate smaller, less expensive housing doesn’t exist, leaving those tasked with ensuring we have a well rounded community in a bit of a quandary. Civic politicians and planners have dipped their toes in those waters but given the frigid response, they’ve been limited to acknowledging the situation exists and not much else. They recognize empty nesters who want to remain in the community have few housing choices and that a detached home, a staple of families here in decades past, is out of the reach of many of today’s young families, yet the pushback they get in trying to do something about it thwarts any well-intentioned plans they might favour. Sooner or later, however, something’s got to give. Either we figure out a way to accommodate all ages and income levels or we’ll end up with a disjointed community, one where the middle age rules and the young and the old are left to fend for themselves. I understand that no one wants to see their neighbourhood change, but at the same time, nothing stays the same forever for a reason.

Giving public access key to preserving heritage buildings ED RIES

COMMUNITY COMMENT We live in a society that cherishes new things with new features. Old things must be conveniently disposed of. I write this with a Windows 7 computer, not the Apple IIe, typewriter, ballpoint pen or pencil that preceded it. Our society even helps get rid of old things. When we buy something new, the price often includes a disposal fee for recycling what it replaced. With such clear bias for newer and better, why exactly are we paying up to $600,000 to acquire and relocate a century-old barn its owner wants to tear down? What benefit can justify the expense of adding an old barn at the Kirkland House? I know it’s our “heritage,” but what exactly does that mean? Kirkland House was built a century ago. A half-century later it was abandoned and nearly destroyed by determined teen vandals.

Volunteers began loving restoration in 1993 and it was acquired by Delta in 2004. The main floor is rented for meetings and the elegant grounds for weddings and social events. Grounds rentals for 2012 are reported fully booked at $950 per day. I expect they will soon be renting space for barn dances, or whatever people do in old barns ... perhaps weddings when it unexpectedly rains? Restored heritage buildings apparently have attraction for public use ... within limits. Their website boasts wheelchair access and modern washrooms, not lovingly restored privies. Kirkland House is Delta’s very own heritage theme park. They offer attractive venues for private events, but rather than being met by cartoon characters, one is immersed in Delta’s heritage. Instead of a big hug from Mickey, one is greeted by Delta as it once was. How better to learn and appreciate Delta’s heritage ... and the volunteers who saved it for us? The key to preserving Delta’s heritage buildings is public access and use. Only when the public gets involved can they understand and appreciate what life used to be like.

The Optimist encourages readers to write letters to the editor. Letters are accepted on any topic, although preference is given to those on local matters. The Optimist reserves the right to edit letters and the decision to publish is at the discretion of the editor or publisher. All letters must be signed, dated and include the writer’s phone number

The Kirkland House Foundation is a not-for-profit organization. Events and donations fund ongoing restoration costs. Delta’s help with their capital costs seems a cost effective and prudent way to preserve a sample of Delta’s heritage for its citizens. The heritage value of privately owned buildings that deny public access and use is more elusive. Heritage has little value if you can’t learn it! Many historic homes and buildings are hidden in plain sight. Delta’s heritage webpage provides information about major designated properties (6) and registered properties (79) and includes downloadable “passports” useful for locating and viewing. Delta’s heritage seems carefully documented and helpfully presented. While pondering heritage I visited Delta’s museum. Delta has a unique and very interesting history, but there was little unique about the displays. I saw rooms with old furnishing and farm implements. They are just like the ones I grew up with ... but I didn’t grow up anywhere near Delta. A room portraying Delta’s distinctive and interesting history, the people and events that make Delta very special, would be a wonderful addition.

June 27, 2012 The Delta Optimist A13 Letters to the Editor

Without change community lacks growth and prosperity Editor: Re: Southlands fight only stopping more voices, letter to the editor, June 20 It was enlightening to read Nick Mayar’s comments about the fact that all the Tsawwassen protesting has stopped development in the area and with no new development wanted, it’s always the same voices that are heard. A turnout of 200 people for the save the farmland cause isn’t voicing the majority view, I ask where are the farmers in these pro-

tests, after all, it’s their livelihood these people want to preserve. I ask the protesters if they have noticed as they zoom down Highway 17 that it’s the middle of June and the crops are just being seeded, not a great outlook for a farmer to make a profit. At the Tsawwassen Mall there was a fire some time ago, the business building that was burnt out has not been replaced, I think due to lack of confidence that the Tsawwassen business core will grow. As Mr.

Mayar said, development is going in all around us were protesting cannot stop it, so if we just keep the status quo, Tsawwassen will just become a nice retirement community that will wither away with age. Voting for Vicki Huntington just continues this process, because she and her armchair farmer supporters are not open to change, and without change there will be no growth and prosperity in our community. Hal Genzel

Father’s Day mug holds more than just the morning coffee

Editor: Sunday, June 17 was Father’s Day. I spent the previous evening with my son at a family gathering, where I was presented with a Father’s Day card and a new coffee mug. The coffee mug says “World’s Best Father” and it is terrific. I have an aging coffee cup that I have used almost everyday for the past 24 years and it has the stains to prove it. The cup shows a big #1 with Dad written

through the one. My son explained that he had gone store to store searching for a #1 Dad mug but he could not find one. When my son was a child we would say “Daddy and Bryan #1 home team.” So each day when I have my morning java, I see the #1 Dad but I think about him and how much he means to me. After all, he is the reason I wear the title of Dad. R. Crawford

LIVING MATTERS The husband is in love. The subject of his affections, however, is rather curious. Ain’t the predictable items. No fancy new putter. No smart phone or iPad or snazzy new brogues. It’s a couple of plants. That’s right. Clematises, actually. Two happy looking lovelies he found at the nursery and planted beside the arbour out back. “Do you think they’ll be OK here?” he asked me. “I told the guy at the nursery that we didn’t have much sun here and that the soil wasn’t the best, but he thought they’d be fine. I’m not so sure. What do you think?” I didn’t know what to think, and told him as much. The husband took to watching over the clematises much like a duck would

watch her ducklings. There wasn’t much to see, as far as I could tell. The clematises just sat there, doing next to nothing for the first little while. “I don’t think they’re doing well,” the husband told me after they’d been in the ground for a week. “I mean, they’re dropping their flowers. And I really think they’re sagging.” I had to tell him that I wasn’t sure that “sagging” was a horticultural term. Blooming, I have heard of. Sagging, not so much. The husband hovered. The husband watered. The husband said things to the plants, and while I didn’t pick up on the one-sided conversation, I am quite sure he said something like: “C’mon, little fellas. I know you can do it.” The extent of his affections became clear a couple of weeks later when he was away on business and gave me a call. The husband’s first impulse was not to inquire after me, or the sons, or even the state of the bank account. “How are the clematises

doing?” he asked. I looked out the kitchen window. “Still there,” I said. “I kind of knew that,” he said. “But how are they doing? Man, if they don’t make it, I am going to be so upset. They’re kind of to me like the cats were to you.” Odd, I told him, especially given that plants to do not generally curl up on your lap after dinner or sleep on the end of the bed. The clematises do not purr or stretch out by a fire on cold winter’s night. But that did nothing to dull the man’s affections. After four weeks of fretting, hovering, studying, watering and engaging in one-sided conversations, the husband began to relax. “I think,” he said, after inspecting his sweet, green dears one day, “that the clematises are growing. I mean, they’re not growing like crazy. But they’re growing. I’m sure of it.” That, I said, was fabulous news, and honest to goodness, it was. A sagging vine is bad enough, but a lovesick husband is worse.

Come check out the t s e Boutique w e N in Tsawwasssen

Celebrating Legion Week This year the Legion will celebrate 86 years of dedicated community service. In 155 communities throughout British Columbia and the Yukon — including Ladner and Tsawwassen — 63,000 Legionnaires and members of the Ladies Auxiliary serve all citizens with quiet dignity and distinction. The Honourable Ida Chong, Minister, Community, Sport and Cultural Development, recently announced funding for Legion branches throughout the province to host community celebrations highlighting Legion Week June 24 to 30. Legion Week is officially proclaimed by the governments of British Columbia and the Yukon to acknowledge and pay tribute to the Legion’s often unsung community contributions. In moving forward for the next era of community service, bold, new and innovative programs are being developed under the leadership of the Legion’s B.C./ Yukon Command.

“Communities and families want their local Legion Branch to be a place for fun, social activities and to be a hub of volunteerism,” said Bob Brady, president, B.C./Yukon Command. “Many of our branch redevelopments are being structured to provide housing, social spaces, community halls and meeting places for volunteerism and to build on the social fabric of communities. “We plan to be here into the future and meeting the needs of the communities we serve is how we plan to do that.” Legion Week is a time for the public to learn more about their local Legion Branch. • The Legion contributes well over $6.9 million every year for a vast array of community health, social, athletic, youth and educational programs, serving all citizens. • They also raise in excess of $21 million through gaming, which is re-invested in communities throughout the province. • The Legion’s assisted

and affordable housing program is among the largest in British Columbia. • Volunteer hours are as equally impressive, with 600,000 contributed by Legion members every year. • The Legion partners with the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria and the British Columbia Institute of Technology, to fund and provide comprehensive education, transition and trauma counseling programs for veterans of all ages. The Legion Veterans Transition Program with UBC assists those suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder. The Legion Military Skills Conversion Program with BCIT opens the door to educational and entrepreneurial opportunities. Cockrell House on Vancouver Island offers a two year transitional program for homeless Veterans. These ground-breaking and life-changing programs are designed all in aid of assisting military personnel to successfully transition

from military to civilian life. “Our communities need these men and women to know that their service to this country is valued and when they return. The Legion welcomes and supports them,” Brady said. “The Legion is always there for Veterans and they are always there for their fellow citizens. The future is bright for the Legion in British Columbia and we welcome those who share in our vision of community service.”

Welcome to the 15th annual Readers’ Choice Awards special edition that honours and recognizes the businesses and individuals chosen the best in their category by Optimist readers. Winners were determined by ballots that ran in the Optimist this spring. Readers were asked to vote for their favourite in each category. The business or individual receiving the most votes was declared the “Readers’ Choice.” Although we’ve chosen to list only the top vote getters in each category, this contest showed there are a large number of businesses doing a great job in Ladner and Tsawwassen, evidenced by the fact their loyal customers took the time to enter their names on the ballot. All winners received substantial support from Optimist readers, but this year we’re featuring those nine businesses that have been a readers’ favourite every year since

the program began. All readers that took the time to fill out a ballot were entered in a draw for a Yamaha Sound Bar (surround sound system) from Jack’s TV & Stereo. The winner is Jaime Price of Ladner.

Scott and Jane Campbell own CampbellCare Plumbing, Heating & Air.

Staff at CampbellCare treats customers right

The team at CampbellCare Plumbing, Heating & Air is proud to keep on winning Readers’ Choice awards. “Myself, Scott and all the staff are always really proud and really grateful for the support that we get from the community,” says Jane Campbell. “We’re always really proud to receive the Readers’ Choice award. We don’t take it lightly, we’re very grateful.”

The business, owned by Scott and Jane, a husband and wife team, has been serving the community for over 30 years. Treating people the way “we’d want to be treated” has been a focal point for the Campbells over that time. The business puts a focus on “respecting a client’s time and respecting their property by being really clean, being on time and

being courteous.” Now operating out of Tilbury, the business started in the Ladner home of Scott Campbell in 1981. The company, which has around 25 employees, plans on installing a showroom in its offices this summer that will feature gas fireplaces and other plumbing and heating products. Visit the business online at or call 604-946-1000.

McDonaldEs still great place to bring the kids McDonald’s is a great place for kids, says Steve Krawchuk, who owns both Ladner and Tsawwassen McDonald’s restaurants. From the Playplace fun area to tasty Happy Meals, a trip to McDonald’s can be a special outing for youngsters. “It’s just a place kids grow up with,” says Krawchuk. The overall menu at the “Golden Arches” has seen a number of additions in recent years giving customers more meal and snack choices. “For a meal under $10, our menu has grown quite a bit,” he says, noting new items include Angus burgers, McBistro sandwiches, salads and fruit smoothies. New specialty coffees are also doing “very well.” “There’s been a whole bunch of new things added to the McDonald’s menu.” The Ladner restaurant is located at 5776 Ladner Trunk Rd. while the Tsawwassen location can be found at 1835-56th St. For more on McDonald’s

Kari Dobrilla says customers appreciate the wild fish selection at Superior Fish.

Superior products and service keys to success Selection, service and great fresh products have helped Superior Fish in Ladner keep on winning Readers’ Choice awards. “We carry wild fish,” says Kari Dobrilla, who owns the business along with Debbie Wilson. “That’s important to a lot of people.” Superior Fish, which has been located at Trenant

Park Square for over 20 years, has also brought in lots of new products, including shelved goods and desserts over the last year, she notes. Great staff with knowledge of product and helpful cooking suggestions, along with loyal customers, have helped the business enjoy success. Superior Fish carries a

range of condiments and preserves, gluten-free products, organic foods, pasta and sauces as well as specialty foods. Visit the business online at or call 604-946-2097. The website also includes recipes for dishes like shrimp dip, stuffed mushrooms, seafood lasagna and fish tacos.

Manager Yvonne Clark says the customer is king at Delta Carpets.

Small town service with up town style

Customer service is number one at Delta Carpets. “For us it’s all about the customer,” says store manager Yvonne Clark. “The customer is king.” The Ladner business takes care of its customers regardless of the size of the job. “Every job is important to us,” Clark says.

Family owned and operated since 1967, Delta Carpets, a business with “small town service with up town style,” was founded by Albert Beeksma. Delta Carpets has a huge selection. “You don’t have to go through the tunnel or go far away. It’s all right here,” says Clark.

The business has a 2,500square-foot showroom with the latest samples of carpet, vinyl plank, hardwood, laminate, cork, ceramics and custom area rugs. Delta Carpets is located at 5025-48th Ave. in Ladner Village. Call 604-946-6291 or find the business online at

Top staff at Swim Blue The staff at Swim Blue Pools and Hot Tubs is a big reason why the Ladner business continues to rack up Readers’ Choice awards. “My staff on the front line, they’re treating people well and I think that’s the biggest reason,” says Steve Kovacs, who owns the business with his wife Linda. Swim Blue provides a

range of services to look after pools and hot tubs. “Choose from maintenance programs, or do it yourself with their free water testing service that uses computer analysis to instantly determine exactly which chemicals you’ll need to perfectly balance your water,” Swim Blue’s website states.

The store also carries a variety of products, including accessories and pool toys. The team at Swim Blue is passionate about the business. “We love what we do.” Swim Blue Pools and Hot Tubs is at 4946 Chisholm St. and online at

Lawlor expands with move to the Village

Exemplary customer service is a focus for Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe owner Janet Holmes. “My customers say that you can get jewelry anywhere but you can’t get service like ours anywhere,” says Holmes, adding that’s a reason why the business keeps winning Readers’ Choice awards. She opened Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe in January of 2010 after her dad, Patrick Lawlor, retired

and closed Lawlor Jewelry a month earlier. Patrick still checks in from time to time, she notes. “He’s still very, very proud of the Lawlor name.” The family business moved from Trenant Park Square to Ladner Village last year. Holmes is happy with the relocation, noting the business gets to be open during Ladner Village Market dates and can be a part of the annual quilt

walk and car show. “Plus, expanding allowed us to bring a watchmaker on site.” The store is carrying quite a bit more jewelry since the move and has added a gentlemen’s section. Holmes hopes to get into bridal jewelry by next summer. Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe is located at 4817F Delta St. The business can be reached at 604-9461057.

Cleaning with the environment in mind Ichiban Fine Cleaning owner Sung Kim tries hard to serve his customers by doing a good job cleaning their garments but also keeps the environment in mind. He uses very mild soap and “not so strong” chemicals. “That’s good for the customer,” he says. Typical garments that come in for cleaning include shirts and dress pants along with suit pants and jackets. Kim specializes in cleaning wedding dresses. The detailed work takes a long time, he notes, adding he cleans the special dresses all by hand. Kim, who’s happy Ichiban keeps on winning Readers’ Choice awards, has owned the business for about five years. Ichiban also does repairs and alterations. The cleaner has contracts with the Delta police and fire departments as well. Ichiban Fine Cleaning is located at 5247 Ladner Trunk Rd.

Offering fresh produce has helped the Kin’s Farm Market in Ladner keep on winning Readers’ Choice Awards. “We work very hard at bringing the best and freshest products to our customers and we are thankful that they appreciate our hard work,” says Kin’s marketing manager Lia Fletcher, adding that it’s an honour to have received an award for 15 consecutive years.

“Speed is the key to freshness, so we strive to bring the products from the farms to our stores as fast as possible. For example, our local strawberries and blueberries are picked at 5 a.m. and delivered directly to our stores, they don’t even stop at our warehouse.” During the summer most of the produce at Kin’s is local, adds Fletcher. Kin’s Farm Market is

at Trenant Park Square in Ladner. Fletcher also says, “we will continue working very hard at bringing the best products to our Ladner store, as we hope to serve the Ladner/Tsawwassen community for many years to come.” For more on Kin’s, including information on weekly specials, visit the business’ website at www.

Friends will be teammates at Washington State school

SDSS Grade 12 students Nicole Porter and Sydney Elrick are headed to Tri-Cities to play soccer at Columbia Basin BY

Nicole Porter will only have to wait a few weeks before the arrival of a perfect home care package to help her feel more comfortable in her new surroundings. The Grade 12 South Delta secondary student leaves for Columbia Basin College (CBC) in a couple of weeks where she will be starting goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team and begin her studies towards one day becoming a French teacher. Porter was recruited by the Tri-Cities WA area school while playing for the U18 Richmond Red Hot Selects Metro team at a prospects tournament in Seattle back in January. She soon followed with an official visit to the campus. “It was a great school and the girls really made me feel incorporated with the team during my time there,” said Porter. “They also asked me if I knew of any midfielders who would be interested in playing for them. I told them I know of a really good left-footed one.” That potential recruit happened to be Porter’s close friend and SDSS classmate Sydney Elrick who was still weighing her post-secondary options. CBC head coach Matt Mills soon contacted her via e-mail

and the the process began from there. Elrick made the nearly seven hour trek by car to the school in April and signed her commitment letter before returning home. “Sure, you’re nervous to be leaving home but knowing Nicole is going to be there too makes it a whole lot easier,” smiled Elrick who has enrolled in general studies for now. “It’s going to be completely different down there but at least it’s a smaller school so we’re not going to get lost. “We already have our own apartment.” Prior to heading south, Porter will be in Kamloops next week as the Red Hot Selects look to cap a dream season at the Provincial “A” Cup Championships. Richmond lost just once in 16 league games, then rolled through Coastal Cup playdowns, capped by a 3-0 win over Surrey in the championship game back in May. Porter had been playing at the Gold level in Ladner before landing a spot with the Selects for her final season at the youth level. Elrick will also be competing for a Provincial Cup, taking part in the “B” championships in Kelowna as a key member of the Central City Breakers ’94 Elite. Her success in fastpitch and baseball will delay her departure for CBC. She plays fastpitch with the South Surrey Thunder and is a member of the provincial women’s baseball team.

South Delta secondary Grade 12 students Sydney Elrick (left) and Nicole Porter will be continuing their soccer careers this fall at Columbia Basin College in Washington State. Porter was recruited by the school while playing for her U18 Metro team and recommended her good friend as a valuable addition in midfield.

She plans on competing in local tournaments aiming to gain more beach experience, stay fit, and keep her touches consistent in the off-season. “I chose Douglas because it was close

enough to home, it’s a good fit for me, academically and sports wise, and (the coach (Kyra Iannone) definitely was a big part of my decision” said Flower-Ainge. She trained under former national team and UBC standout Joanne Ross at the Oval Excellence Program. “Haley is a committed athlete with a strong desire to improve and excel,” said Ross. “She is very coachable and eager to improve. Hayley has great leadership skills and is a good role model to the younger athletes in the program.” Flower-Ainge is part of a Douglas recruting class that also includes: Megan Ramstead (Mt Boucherie secondary, Kelowna), Courtney Wilson (Timberline secondary, Campbell River) and Tory Trim (Clayton Heights, Surrey). One of Delta secondary school’s top graduating athletes will be focusing on volleyball as she begins her post-secondary education. Hayley Flower-Ainge is among five players in the Douglas College Royals’ 2012 recruiting class, announced last week by newly appointed head coach Kyra Iannone. Flower-Ainge was also a key basketball player on one of the strongest group to come through DSS in sometime under coach Kerrie Trotman, finishing second at the Fraser Valley junior girls championships in 2010. She also played on one of the most successful club teams to ever come out of the Ladner Girls Soccer Club — the Ladner Attack. On the volleyball court, she not only led the Pacers but played at the club level with Air Attack. She also is a product of

Rams earn silver at provincials

South Delta Rams spring flag football program capped off a successful season at the provincial championships in Kelowna. The Rams U14 squad captured the silver medal after a gutsy 23-14 loss to a heavily favoured team coached by former B.C. Lion Bobby Singh. Coaches Brent Calvert and Dan Matwichyna are very proud of the team for entering the tournament ranked seventh and battling their way through four higher ranked teams to reach the championship game.

The roster includes: Cooper Jones, Grant McDonald, Stefanos Goulas, Jordan Drab, Lucas Fair, James Greig, Maxwell Stalling, Douglas Jameson, Billy Matwichyna and Michael Calvert. The U16 Rams finished fifth, while the Andy Grieg coached U14 Rams placed second on the consolation side of the tournament. Overall it was a great experience for the kids, their families and the Rams organization to send five teams to the provincials.

th 70 Anniversary

Sue Stewart of Tsawwassen, BC passed away of cancer on June 20, 2012. Born Susan Norman Watt in Montreal on January 2, 1961, Sue spent her teenage years in Oakville, Ontario. Beloved wife of husband Bill and loving mother of Grant, Jessica and Megan. Predeceased by her treasured father Rody Watt, Sue is survived by her mother Barbara Watt of Oakville, her brother Jaime Watt of Toronto and her sister Patti Baker of London, Ontario. Sue dearly loved her nieces and nephews and extended family. Every member of her family and her many friends are deeply saddened by Sue departing for heaven before we were ready to lose the gift that she was to us. Graduating from Queen’s University in 1983, Susan loved her chosen profession of pediatric physiotherapy. Later, she was part of the first graduating class of the online Masters in Rehabilitation Program at UBC in November 2007. Her Masters degree fueled Sue’s passion for using technology in continuing education and clinical support. She developed and piloted training modules to enable electronic mentoring of pediatric clinicians throughout health regions in BC. Sue worked for 26 years at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children in Vancouver. As a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, Sue loved teaching students each year in the normal development of children. Her main current research interest was in the effects of prenatal substance exposure on children. Sue loved life. She took great delight in others and was unfailing in her encouragement of young people. Whether skiing or hiking, she was never happier than when in her beloved mountains. Sue was recently awarded a Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada for making significant contributions to her community. Her volunteer activities were many, and in particular she loved Pioneer Pacific Camp and was a longtime volunteer and former Chair of the Board of Directors of Jacob’s Well on Vancouver’s downtown east side. A reception to mark Sue’s passing, including for individuals who would like to greet family members, will be held at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen on June 30, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held the same day at 4:30 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church, 5350 Baillie St in Vancouver (on West 37th Ave west of Cambie). On July 8, 2012 a reception will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Oakville Club, 56 Water St., Oakville, Ontario. Sue’s family wishes to express our thanks to the spectacular community of friends who have provided such practical care for us over the past eight months. We also wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers of Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, BC for the extraordinary care provided to Sue during her final weeks. If desired, donations may be made to Jacob’s Well ( or the redevelopment campaign of Casey House in Toronto (
