Sports Talons tap Valley gold
The Gleneagle Talons took full advantage of their homemat advantage, capturing four golds and a silver at last week’s B.C. Fraser Valley wrestling championships. Led by the triple-threat of Julie Cho, Candice Owen and Haley Kitsch-Best, the Talons posted the second-best score in girls, trailing St. Thomas More. Sasan Haghighat-Joo racked up gold for the boys side. Cho won the girls 60-kilogram division, Owen in 57 kg, and Kitsch-Best in 75 kg — each edging out an STM opponent. Haghighat-Joo secured his medal in the boys 66 kg division. The Port Moody Blues and Terry Fox Ravens each won three titles. Two-time B.C. champion Arash Farhadian took the 48 kg crown, beating Gleneagle’s Farid Alizadeh in the final. Blake Chernoff won the 78 kg title, while Ciara McCrae bested Pinetree’s Karly Adair in the girls 51 kg final. The Ravens’ Kristi Roots earned the girls 69 kg crown, while Michelyn Bell was uncontested in 90 and 90+ kg. Pinetree got victories from Connor Adair, and Quinn Lessing, who edged teammate Kostya Levchuk in 74 kg. Other golds were netted by Dr. Charles Best’s James Mortimer and Rachael Allen.
