Crown decides against appeal Although Robinson’s 12-month conditional sentence was less than requested, it wasn’t ‘demonstrably unfit’ BY
Crown prosecutors will not appeal former RCMP Cpl. Benjamin “Monty” Robinson’s sentence, the B.C. Criminal Justice Branch announced late last week. Communications counsel Neil MacKenzie said Friday afternoon the significant public interest in the case led the branch to release its decision, something that’s not normally done. Robinson is the former Mountie
convicted earlier this year of obstruction of justice in the 2008 Tsawwassen crash that killed 21year-old Orion Hutchinson. Last month, Robinson received a 12-month conditional sentence. MacKenzie said there are three main reasons behind the decision not to appeal the sentence, even though the Crown asked for a three- to nine-month jail sentence: it acknowledged a conditional sentence of 12 to 18 months was legally available; there is no error of law that would justify an appeal; and a reviewing court
“The fact that a sentence is different from what the Crown asked for does not mean that it was demonstrably unfit.”
would likely defer to the judge’s exercise of discretion. “Trial judges have broad discretion at sentencing,” he said. “If a sentence is appealed, the appeal court will generally defer to the
judge’s finding’s of fact, as well as the judge’s assessment of what principles of sentence should be given priority in the case.” MacKenzie said the appeal court cannot substitute its opinion for that of the trial judge simply because it might have taken a different approach. In the case of an appeal, the Crown would have to show the sentence imposed was “demonstrably unfit.” “A demonstrably unfit sentence is a sentence that because of legal error, or its clear inadequacy, significantly departs from the range
of sentences that might otherwise be available in similar cases,” he said. “The fact that a sentence is different from what the Crown asked for does not mean that it was demonstrably unfit.” Judith Hutchinson, Orion’s mother, said it is an appalling situation but the Crown’s hands are tied because the sentence handed down technically fits within the legal parameters set out for the charge. Farm storage business scuttled Owner puts Ladner Trunk Road property up for sale after court rules he can’t store RVs and more on farmland BY
He’s being punished for having the audacity to make a profit off his land, says an irate East Delta farm owner who’s now put his property up for sale. Bob Robertson, who owns 16.5 hectares at 10785 Ladner Trunk Rd., recently placed his land up for sale, saying he’s being forced to sell because he was making money storing a large number of vehicles, boats and supplies. “I don’t know why they decided to single me out. I was making a real good living at it and preserving the land,” he told the Optimist. A B.C. Supreme Court judge this summer ordered a prohibition on the storage of vehicles and boats on Robertson’s property, which has a prominent R. Robertson Cattle Company sign on one of the large buildings. Robertson said he was still farming and involved in the buying and PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI selling of cattle, but had Bob Robertson has listed his 16.5-hectare property for almost $5 million after the B.C. community, the province and beyond,” she said in an email to the Optimist. “Because of this decision, someone who was denounced by this very same judge for inhuman and despicable actions, and for betraying the very public he was sworn to protect, is barely given a slap on the
wrist and there is nothing that can be done to change the situation.” She said the family, as well as the larger community, has been left looking for an explanation for a “sentence that clearly does not fit the crime.” Orion Hutchinson died Oct. 25, 2008 after a collision between his motorcycle and Robinson’s Jeep at about 10:15 p.m. at
the corner of 6th Avenue and Gilchrist Drive in Tsawwassen. Following the crash, Robinson left the scene with his children, leaving his driver’s licence with a bystander, and walked to his home a couple of blocks away. After settling his children into bed, he went downstairs and drank two shots of vodka before returning to the scene
where he told a Delta police officer he had drank two beers at a party earlier in the evening and then had two shots at home to calm his nerves. The judge found that, based on his knowledge as a veteran police officer, Robinson would have known that drinking the vodka after the crash and then not telling police the exact amount would

All of this was done discreetly in clean, wellmaintained buildings on an immaculate, laser-leveled property, he explained. “I’m the biggest, I’m the cleanest and I feel we offered the best service, and we do it for profit. I farm every acre. I didn’t park on farmland, I just parked on hardtop and inside the buildings,” Robertson said. Now 60, Robertson has owned and worked the land since the early 1970s, but said he can’t go on trying to make a profit from farming. He’s asking for just under $5 million, but wonders who has the capital to make such an investment and then take the risk farming it. Mayor Lois Jackson said the non-farm use of the property has been going on for a long time and the municipality was simply following due process. Delta’s new agricultural plan contains a series of action plans, including investigating incentives to encourage farmland use and discouraging non-farm use. The plan also calls for improving enforcement of existing regulations, including soil filling, storage and waste dumping. potentially throw off any impaired driving investigation. “He had time to think and chose to deliberately mislead [the police], knowing in detail the effect this would have upon any investigation,” she said. Robinson did not face any driving charges as a result of the crash, only obstruction of justice for his actions following it.

Setting sail on hospital ship Ladner’s Tabitha Goossen heading for Africa to volunteer with Mercy Ships BY
A Ladner woman will soon find herself adrift on a floating hospital. Twenty-two-year-old Tabitha Goossen will be leaving later this month on a flight bound for Guinea, Africa, where she will spend six months aboard the Africa Mercy, a hospital ship. Africa Mercy is part of a fleet of hospital vessels that serves those in need of health care and aid in the world’s poorest countries. They are dispatched by Mercy Ships, an international Christian charity. Goossen will be among a crew of 450 volunteers, including doctors, surgeons and nurses. The ship is equipped with six operating rooms and 70 hospital beds. Staffed entirely by volunteers, Mercy Ships doctors perform free operations on board to correct a myriad of health issues — cleft lips and/or palates, crossed eyes and cataracts, removing tumours and straightening club feet — many of which would be addressed much
Tabitha Goossen is excited to begin a six-month volunteer adventure with Mercy Ships. earlier in life in the Western world. Thousands of children in developing countries die every year from easily correctable birth defects, such as cleft palates and lips, and those who survive often become outcasts. Medical and dental teams establish local clinics in villages, many of which have limited or no access to health care. The organi-
zation provides wells and water pumps, assists with latrine construction and trains villagers in hygiene and sanitation, a basic defence against the spread of communicable diseases. The organization also helps communities become self-sufficient in food production and teaches primary health care to locals that want to benefit their community and pass on that

She said she was initially thinking of pursuing a career in physiotherapy but is now considering going into medicine. She said she had been looking for an opportunity to do some volunteer work and heard about the Mercy Ships program through a friend, who had a really good experience volunteering on one of the ships a few years ago. While her official role on the ship will be reception, Goossen said during off hours volunteers can help in other areas and with her education she could assist with rehabilitation. All volunteers are required to pay a monthly fee to help keep the ship running. Goossen is currently in the process of raising $8,000 for Mercy Ships. Habitat for Humanity to build homes at TFN Memorandum of understanding signed that could see up to eight affordable houses built for families BY
Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and Tsawwassen First Nation announced this week they have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see up to eight affordable family homes built within the TFN community The memorandum, signed late last week, outlines the formation of a committee structure and a process for moving forward. “As a growing community with a range of housing needs, Tsawwassen First Nation is excited about our collaboration with Habitat for Humanity,” said Chief Kim Baird in a news release.
“With an established partner like Habitat building affordable housing for the community — and with the community — this represents a significant step forward,” she said. TFN CAO Doug Raines said the Habitat for Humanity model would be a great one for the community, as it would provide TFN members with the opportunity to volunteer and learn valuable skills on a home construction site. Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver CEO Tim Wake added: “We’re thrilled to sign this MOU with the Tsawwassen First Nation and for the opportunity to work with the TFN community in building affordable homes for
families. “Across Canada, other Habitat for Humanity affiliates have achieved great success in working with First Nations on improving family housing in their communities. We’re grateful for this opportunity to work with Chief Baird and the Tsawwassen First Nation community.” Habitat for Humanity works with partner families on affordable home ownership solutions. Families
achieve home ownership through no down payment and no interest mortgages, with payments tied to no more than 30 per cent of the family’s gross income. The organization held an information meeting at the TFN this summer to provide information about a possible partnership. Partner families are chosen through a selection process with participation from First Nation members, says the organization, noting the
actual dwelling is built with the active “sweat-equity” contribution from the partner family, as well as by partners and volunteers that contribute time and donations to keep the unit costs affordable. “These are communitybuilt homes in every way, and have high appeal to band members who want to see progress on this critical social need through their own hands-on labour.” states the organization on
its website. In other news regarding new housing at the TFN, the Aquillini/TFSI Development Limited Partnership has begun building two show homes and a marketing centre. Signage adverting the new Tsawwassen Shores housing development has been installed at a couple of highly visible locations and the marketing of 42 singlefamily homes is set to begin this October.

MURPHY’S LAW A few years back when I heard there were plans in the works to redevelop the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club site, I felt a twinge of disappointment. It’s not that I was opposed to the housing/golf project proposed by local businessman Ron Toigo, but I was sad to know the end was drawing near for the popular little golf course. It was the first course I ever played as a 10-year-old, one I enjoyed countless times in adulthood, including during many tournaments, and, more recently, it was an amenity I had the pleasure of introducing to my own son as he took to the game. It wasn’t the swankiest of layouts, but it held its own charm, and nothing improved the numbers on your scorecard faster than a steady diet of straightaway 250-yard par 4s. It was a comfortable place, one deeply ingrained in the community, so its closing created a significant hole in the local links landscape. I had the opportunity to play its replacement, Tsawwassen Springs, last week and I’m happy to report that any worries about the loss of a favourite haunt have evaporated. The new course, which opened for play earlier this month, has been lengthened and is decidedly more upscale than its predecessor, but designer Ted Locke has done a great job of maintaining what made the old layout so special. With four sets of tees ranging from 4,000 to almost 5,500 yards, the new design means it’s still playable for youngsters, novices, seniors and others that found a level of comfort at the old track, but Locke has upped the ante, bringing Tsawwassen’s lone public course into the new millennium. It poses far greater challenges than the old layout, and not simply because of increased yardage. The days of pulling out the big stick and swinging away with abandon are gone as hazards swallow up errant shots and narrow landing areas put a premium on accuracy. That’s not to suggest it’s overwhelming, particularly if you play conservatively and not get too greedy, but, let’s just say, you won’t get the free ride the previous layout often provided. After countless rounds at the old course, it will take some getting used to the new routing around some familiar landmarks, but my first impressions are indeed favourable. Locke has taken the old site, and land immediately to the north, and created an eminently playable course that builds on all that was good about its predecessor. Our old friend has undergone a successful makeover.
Seize opportunity to develop solution for the Southlands ED RIES
COMMUNITY COMMENT In April of 1989, long before the July close of the Tsawwassen Developments Ltd. (TDL) hearing, a representative of CIBC approached George Hodgins offering to sell TDL’s first mortgage at an attractive discount. Council had requested the land’s removal from the ALR and had designated it “urban” in Delta’s Official Community Plan. Hodgins didn’t “buy a farm.” He bought a mortgage, anticipating payments from TDL. Then things changed. Council surrendered to an unending torrent of anti-development speakers, TDL defaulted on its payments and Hodgins foreclosed. In 1991, Hodgins proposed a way out. Called “Heritage Place,” it was his young son Sean’s first speech to council. Century would dedicate to Delta a 220-acre public park on the Boundary Bay foreshore (later sold to the Greater Vancouver Regional District), a
forested 75-acre nature reserve and an 18-hole “value added” public golf course. One thousand homes were to be built over 10 years and 150 acres would be set aside for 10 years as a working dairy farm. Council wasn’t interested. It changed the OCP designation to “agricultural” then tried unsuccessfully to bury the land back in the ALR. In 2006, Sean Hodgins outlined a new plan: one-third of the land set aside for residential development, one-third deeded to Delta as parks and one-third dedicated to community farming initiatives. A volunteer group of two dozen South Delta residents worked through 2007 and early 2008 refining that new plan for the Southlands. It was further refined and extensively documented in a consultants’ charrette that included public participation. A Southlands Charrette Book provided to Delta by Century was banned from OCP consideration and returned unopened. Delta then resumed digging a hole to bury Southlands in the ALR. Digging was suspended in 2011 when a Mayor’s Summit offered a fresh look if more land were dedicated ... and if Century held off building greenhouses. Sadly, Tsawwassen’s “save our farmland” and allied activists can never be satisfied with

most of someone else’s land. They must have it all! Century built an appealing model of its Southlands cottage, but Part I of its multi-part zoning request, submitted last April, provides scant detail about benefits and detriments affecting Delta. Submittal dates for additional parts remain unknown. Most significantly missing are timing and conditions under which 80 per cent of the land would be deeded to Delta, including land improvements Century separately suggested would be made. Delta planners are seeking missing information needed to understand and consider Century’s request. They are considering a date in late October to explain it to us “in case the applicant provides the information required in the near future.” Century’s approach to selling the 20/80 solution seems muddled. It builds a display cottage illustrating its plan for the 20 per cent, yet it withholds key information about the 80 per cent that Delta requires for a decision. Is Century overly confident? It’s time to find, detail and document a final solution that Delta and Century can live with. Do it now! It’s our last, best chance to avoid more decades of discord, dithering and digging!

Editor: The two noisiest vessels that visit the local container port are Hapag Lloyd’s Houston Express and the Savannah Express. These are the older sister ships in Hapag Lloyd’s fleet and they sit there with unmuffled diesel generators thumping day and night. My new neighbour used to live in Beach Grove where they could hear the thumping but never knew the source. No doubt many other Tsawwassen residents have heard this thumping, not knowing the source. If you have been annoyed by this continual thumping, please call the Port Metro Vancouver 24-hour line and
ask for these vessels to be re-routed. The Houston and the Savannah call here regularly on a six-week cycle. Obviously, Hapag Lloyd considers the Delta container port an industrial site. It has many more modern vessels that could dock here quietly, but they continually send these noisy rust buckets here instead of re-routing them to other docks. As I write this letter (evening of Saturday, Aug. 25) the Houston is out there making its noise and will remain here until after midnight Tuesday. On the morning of Thursday, Sept. 6, the sister ship Savannah will arrive to make more
noise. Phone 604-665-9004 and let them know you are not satisfied with the current schedules. If you don’t take action, the Houston Express will be back here to ruin your Thanksgiving weekend, and the Savannah will follow a week later. One of the local docks provided us with a penetrating frequency for more than an hour at midnight on recent weekends. If you hear this noise, feel free to call the above number and let them know. To date, complaints have fallen on deaf ears, but if enough of us phone in, we may make a difference. The local container port
has no plans to provide “shore to ship” power for these vessels in the near future despite the fact the Los Angeles dock has enforced this change many years ago. The new third berth has the capability to house a cable, but that’s as far as it goes, and they want to expand again! The quiet cruise ships downtown are to be provided with mega watts of shore power but our dock isn’t under consideration. We are obviously considered the bottom of the food chain. Please call the above number and make sure we are heard. John Mayor

Animal lover’s actions end up traumatizing cat Editor: Re: Don’t feed that stray, be kind & take it to shelter, letter to the editor, Aug. 8 In response to a letter recommending stray cats be taken to the animal shelter, the following story seems more than a coincidence. My orange cat went missing earlier this month while I was on vacation and my neighbour was looking after it. The cat is an indoor/outdoor cat, never strays further than a two or three property radius from home and has easy access through a cat flap. When he did not return home at his normal time
Highway policy dictates drivers keep right except to pass
Editor: Re: Legal speed limit should be fine for both lanes, letter to the editor, Aug. 22 I write to correct N. Spiros over his apparent lack of caring which lane he drives in. Perhaps he ought to obey those highway signs that clearly state “Keep Right Except To Pass.” Which part of that official highway policy does he not “care” about? Given Spiros’ name, it is possible he may at some time in his life have visited Greece. Let him try hogging the left lane when driving in Greece — or in any European country for that matter. I would love to hear the reactions of all the other drivers to his “lack of caring” then. Geoff Eldred
(late afternoon) to sit on the driveway awaiting food this raised the alarm for my neighbour. She asked everyone in the immediate vicinity if they had seen the cat as they know him well and nobody knew where he was. The following day my neighbour called the animal shelter and Tigger was there after having been brought in by someone who was looking for their missing orange cat. My cat does not wear a collar but also does not look like a stray, is well
groomed and in good physical condition. The animal shelter said the cat had been picked up at 10 p.m. in a location only 100 metres from my home. He has a microchip and the animal shelter called my house, leaving a message on Tuesday, but I was on vacation so the message was only received after my return. Tigger spent two days at the shelter before he was retrieved and is extremely traumatized by the whole experience. He is still not

eating properly and is very nervous around people. So as a result of an “animal lover” effectively kidnapping my pet and taking it to the animal shelter, the cat is not happy and I’m out of pocket $120 because of the costs incurred to recover him. Peter Main

Letters to the Editor
Queen for a night proved a blast
Editor: The day couldn’t have been better for the Tsawwassen Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration organized by the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (BIA) on Aug. 11 at Diefenbaker Park. As the honourary Queen of the event, I received the royal treatment thanks to a wonderful team made up of the BIA, local businesses and enthusiastic citizens stepping up to help with hair and makeup, costume and jewelry, photography, a personal driver in a vintage car, and even my own Scots Guard to watch over my every need. Sitting on the throne and having children, family, friends, neighbours and even our MP coming to
sit beside me and having photographs taken gave me moment-by-moment pleasures. One memorable little boy recognized that Santa usually uses my throne during our Tsawwassen Christmas season; he asked me if I had any toys for him. I suggested that if he went to the booth where the Celebration Cake was to be cut and presented, he could tell them the Queen said he could have a little cupcake if he said “please.” Being presented with a beautiful bouquet, plus many little posies given by individual children were delightful events. Walking and mingling with appreciative, friendly folk, whom I’d never met before, made me recognize just how fortunate I am to
live in a beautiful corner of Canada of which I’m proud and happy to be a citizen, just as much as I am proud and happy to have originated from Godiva’s Historical Coventry. The magic of sharing the celebration with pipers, Scottish dancers and Celtic band with so many wonderful people and to be surrounded and supported by my family produced a kaleidoscope of memories, which I will always treasure. The crowning experience of the day came when I was watching a group of Union Jack-clad women dancing together while “Land of Hope and Glory” played in the background. They opened their circle to me and I joined them. When the glorious melody actu-

Sex tips? No, it doesn’t appear so from the reports given us by the female reporters allowed entry. Historical concerns shared by male and female alike were expressed, and the same non-answers were obtained. So why would the premier and the Delta Chamber of Commerce violate the B.C. Little House and Sharkey’s join forces for annual fundraiser The Little House Society’s second annual Jazz and Dinner event hosted by Sharkey’s Seafood Bar and Grille earlier this month raised $3,000. The more than 100 people that attended enjoyed a delicious dinner, fabulous music provided by the Pat Gurr Trio and singer Angie Hurst, perfect weather, a
little dancing and a raffle of 80 items. Seventy-one local businesses donated gifts, which were raffled off during the evening. This money will be used to help pay for the development of educational strategies related to reducing the harm caused by substance abuse and addiction. Little House president
Jim Stimson says the event will be an annual staple. “It is such a fun evening that I know people are already looking forward to next year. The Little House has been receiving such wonderful support from the people and businesses of Ladner and Tsawwassen, that I just can’t thank everyone enough.”

Six-year-old Joshua tucked into a burger at the Delta Life Skills Society’s Summer Fun program wrap-up at Memorial Park.
Kids enjoy six weeks of Summer Fun BY
Summer Fun campers got together a couple weeks ago at Memorial Park in Ladner for a wrap-up barbecue. Clad in orange T-shirts, the participants of the six-week Delta Life Skills Society program got a chance to enjoy music, food and sunny weather at the all-sites event. Summer Fun, in its 26th year of operation, has served children with a wide range of disabilities, helping them continue the life skills they’ve learned through school.
“It’s awesome,” said Terri Inouye, a board member with the society and also a parent with two kids in Summer Fun. “It’s six weeks of them going out and doing something. Six weeks of having activities they can participate in,” she said. Activities include outings to local parks, beaches, swimming pools, Grouse Mountain, Playland and the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, noted program director Margot O’Reilly. “We go places and do things,” she said. She said the budget for the summer is around
$200,000 and the parents fundraise about $180,000 of that. “A lot of our kids have really high needs so most of our staffing is one-to-one. That’s what costs so much to run the program.” O’Reilly said the staff is dedicated and really good at what they do. “It’s like one big family.” The program, which has sites in South Delta and North Delta, runs for six weeks in the summer and starts right after the July long weekend. Kids need to live in Delta to participate. For more information on the program, including an

LIVING MATTERS An admission: I do not like to get the Christmas tree when I’m still wearing shorts and flip-flops. I may be in the minority, but I prefer to get the tree — and the wreath and the candy canes and mistletoe — when I’m wearing furlined boots. And mittens. And a parka. And a scarf. And when I’m tramping through the snow. Still. Judging from the offerings in a whole lot of stores right now, there are apparently some folks who are feeling the season. Why else am I starting to see Christmas cards and ornaments on their shelves? And yes, Christmas trees in their aisles. (Mercifully, they are artificial, since it would be a crying shame if your tree turned to dust before your kids were back at school.) Seems to me there’s something a bit, well, awry when merchandisers are

The Nations Largest Mobile Pet Grooming Aussie Pet Mobile Canada, the nation’s largest mobile pet grooming business in the $50-plus billion pet industry, today announced the recent opening of its newest location in Richmond/Delta, B.C. that will service Richmond and Delta in its solar powered Mercedes Benz Sprinter Pet Spas fully equipped with a patented heated hydro bath as well as self contained water, waste and electricity. The solar powered pet spas convert solar energy to electric power helping to reduce emissions while the pet spa remains idle during appointments. “I love the service that Aussie provides. I also like that Aussie is more than just grooming. Aussie is about quality health and the welfare of pets. People and their loved pets are a high priority. ” said Dan Tius, owner of Aussie Pet Mobile Richmond/Delta. “As the new owners of one of the most recognized names in the mobile pet grooming industry, we look forward to meeting the demand for mobile pet grooming services for South Delta, Ladner, Tsawwassen and Richmond.” The convenient mobile pet grooming service offers one-on-one attention in an inviting and relaxing atmosphere not typically found in storefront grooming locations. The Aussie Pet Mobile, a custom designed Mercedes Sprinter van with air conditioning, heat, electricity, and water, relies on no outside electrical or water hookups which makes the unique service easy for apartment or condo
residents as well as homeowners. Aussie Pet Mobile’s professional groomers pamper pets with a15-step spa treatment that includes a customized shampoo, massage, hand dry, brushing, and nail trimming, just to name a few treats. Extra services are also available, such as aloe treatments for dry skin, nail grinding, flea and tick control and an excess hair removal tool known as the Furminator that reduces shedding up to 90% if done on a regular basis. The royal treatment for four-legged friends continues with Aussie Pet Mobile’s “pawdicures,” non-toxic and quick-drying nail painting. Pricing for all of Aussie Pet Mobile’s services depends on the breed, size, coat condition and scope of services. “I researched many different franchise opportunities before choosing Aussie Pet Mobile. It has been great making some local connections and seeing them get excited about our launch. I chose Aussie Pet Mobile because I can see that it is a company that wants you to have fun and enjoy yourself on the job.” said Tius. For more information about Aussie Pet Mobile Richmond/ Delta, please visit www.aussiepetmobile.ca. Aussie Pet Mobile was founded in Australia in 1996 and is the world’s largest mobile pet grooming business servicing more than 700 exclusive territories in the U.S. and 12 overseas countries

In 2009, Aussie Pet Mobile was voted the World’s #1 Pet Service by Entrepreneur Magazine. Aussie Pet Mobile’s certified and trained groomers pamper pets with personal, one-on-one attention in the comfort of their own surroundings. This ensures the pet is not spending the day ‘caged’ in a stressful store environment and affords the owner the luxury of not having to make repeat trips from their house to the grooming salon for drop off and collection. Olsen getting ready for takeoff
South Delta Secondary grad and Winnipeg Jets draft pick excited to be a member of the Kelowna Rockets BY
Two of the biggest moments in Ryan Olsen’s hockey career didn’t happen on the ice, but rather came in the classroom and on the family couch. Fresh off his sophomore season in the Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades, the 18-year-old was attending South Delta Secondary on May 3 when his phone rang. It was Blades general manager and head coach Lorne Molleken. “I was in class and couldn’t answer but I wasn’t expecting to hear from him so I knew something must be up,” recalled Olsen. His instincts proved to be bang on. The Blades had completed a draft day deal, sending him to the Kelowna Rockets for two players, including their leading scorer, Shane McColgan. Olsen only had a few weeks to absorb the trade before thinking about the next potential chapter of his career. It was day two of the NHL entry draft in Pittsburgh and the 6-foot2 centre was projected to be picked sometime in the later rounds. He had serious pre-draft discussions with scouts from several teams, including Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto. However, it was the Winnipeg Jets that selected him in the sixth round, 160th overall. “That was the best day of my life,” said Olsen. “I was hoping I would be selected but there was no guarantee either. I was just with my family waiting to see what would happen when Winnipeg phoned me. It was a surprise because I hadn’t really talked to them
but so exciting too. It’s something that you always had dreamed about and now it’s happened.” Olsen was too sick to attend the Jets development camp in late June but hopes to be at his first NHL training camp early next month, if the current NHL labour dispute is resolved in time. “With Olsen we’re getting a big centreman that had a really good second half,” said the Jets’ general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff at the time of the draft. “He’s a 6-foot2, two-way centreman that our scouts really liked the progression from the beginning to the end of the season.” Through his years growing up in the FILE PHOTO South Delta South Delta Minor product Ryan Olsen was dealt from the Saskatoon Blades to the Kelowna Rockets as part of a Minor Hockey draft day trade. It just got to the point where the coach trusted that part of my game where I could fill a certain role.” The Rockets will be expecting more scoring from him, as well as leadership, as a third-year WHL veteran. “Ryan is the big two-way centre we have been looking for,” said Rockets head coach Ryan Huska. “He has good offensive ability and we look forward to developing him into an important member of our hockey club.” Olsen admits the trade stirred plenty of emotions. He is thrilled to now be playing for a B.C. based team that is considered one of the top franchises in the WHL. He is much closer to home and his family will get to watch him on a regular basis with a weighted Western Conference schedule. However, he does have fond memories of his time in Saskatoon and playing for a club that will be hosting the 2013 Memorial Cup. “It really was an unreal two years,” he said. “I met a lot of good people and my billets were great. They were a great organization to play for and now I’m going to be playing for another that is much closer to home. It’s very exciting.” Having just graduated from SDSS in June, Olsen will be focusing only on hockey this fall for the first time in his career. “It’s going to give me a chance to work on a lot of things that I normally don’t get a chance to,” added Olsen, who will be reunited with Penticton native Carter Rigby in Kelowna, a former Team B.C. teammate.

VAN RHEENEN, Paulus (Paul) Johannes Passed away peacefully on August 18th, 2012 at the age of 77 years. Paul was born in Holland on March 2nd, 1935; the second oldest son of seven children. After WWII, he traveled by ship to Canada and settled in Toronto. He worked at Toronto General Hospital where he was respected by physicians and patients alike. In 1968, Paul moved his family to Vancouver and then to Ladner where he lived for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed Ladner’s friendliness; conversations with shop keepers who knew him by name and the kindness shown by his neighbours. Paul took pride in his work as a boat builder and foreman until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, working on crossword puzzles and going for long walks with his wife Therese, and time spent with family and friends. He cared for Therese until her death in 2009. This loss affected him deeply. Paul is survived by his children Susan, David (Michele), and Tony (Megan); his grandchildren Annaliese, Michael, Torin, Ailia, Trinity, and Kieran; his brothers Frits (Kularb) and Leo (Kathe) and sisters Annie (Richard) and Elly; his nieces and nephews; and dear friends.
