After a soggy June, many local residents thought summer would never come. But, along with August came summer weather and the usual concerns extreme heat brings. Fortunately, there have been few heat related injuries or issues reported. “We haven’t seen too much yet, in terms of heat stroke,” noted Kim Bailey of the Ridge Meadows Care Clinic. Another summer concern is fire. Open burning is never permitted in Pitt Meadows or much of Maple Ridge, but with fire risk levels still high, it’s time for a reminder. “You cannot burn wood in backyards in Pitt Meadows at any time,” said Pitt Meadows assistant fire chief Brad Perrie. “When you have a natural gas or propane fire pit, when it’s out, it’s out.” He noted wood-burning fires continue to smoulder and it takes only a spark to ignite the dry ground. “Depending on what happens with the weather there may be a [complete] ban,” noted Maple Ridge assistant fire chief Timo Juurakko. Outdoor cooking is acceptable in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge under certain conditions. Both Perrie and Juurakko suggest residents read the burning

Pope puts 6,000 kilometres per year on his car but he put between 10,000 and 14,000 kilometres on his bike per year. When Pope was attending UBC and living in North Vancouver, he rode his bike regularly to university – simply because it was faster. “I discovered I could get there faster by bike than by car or even by express bus,” he said.

HomeTeam steps up A Maple Ridge family that has suffered through trying times will benefit from home renovations.

With the help of a local doctor Deandra was accepted into The Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury in Ponoka, Alb. Over the next 18 months Deandra’s determination and the care she received in Ponoka resulted in tremendous progress including her recovery of speech and some mobility. During this time Mike and Angie and their grandsons made the 28-hour return trek to and from Ponoka every weekend to spend time with her. “This family has struggled so hard to make it through this,” said pastor Stevan Mirkovich, adding that this is The HomeTeam’s ninth project. To help or donate call Pastor Stevan Mirkovich and The HomeTeam at 604723-3433 or email pastorsteve@coquitlamsda.com.

Over the last eight years Maple Ridge’s Mike and Angie Gagnon, their daughter Deandra, and grandsons Anthony and Austin have faced more adversity than any family should ever have to endure. The HomeTeam, based in Coquitlam, picked the Gagnon family as reciepients of their 2012 home makeover project. In 2004 Deandra and both her sons were involved in a horrific car crash, which left Deandra with a brain injury, in a coma, fighting for her life. Her injuries were so severe that even G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver lacked the facilities to fully care for her.

Cat adopters given price flexibility Maple Ridge SPCA shelter attendant Michele Massey held Cookie, one of the cats living in shelter care, locally. Harley (inset) is an abandoned 12-year-old domestic short hair cross, in desperate need of a family to adopt him.

When Harley’s owners moved to Toronto, they took him to a shelter and never came back. Harley was very sad and could not understand what he did wrong. Now, the 12-year-old male domestic short-hair-cross is living with other cats at the Maple Ridge SPCA, but he wants a home of his own. He lives with 10-year-old Miss Mew, who needed to have a few teeth pulled, and is still getting over that. She too is confused about why she is at the shelter. These are just two of the felines up for adoption during the BC SPCA “purr-fect” price promotion. From today (Aug. 23) to Saturday, Aug. 25, adopters can choose an adult cat from any BC SPCA location and set their own adoption fee. The Maple Ridge SPCA is currently home to 35 cats, with another 20 living in foster care and a list of people waiting to surrender more felines. The shelter’s kennel attendant Michele Massey said the number of felines looking for families comes down to one thing: “People don’t value cats like they value dogs.” Massey said cats are “the best animal in the world.” “I love dogs equally as well but cats are their own little people,” she said. “They need to be valued like

PNE Star Showdown

Second win for singer

No tears from Matt Kennedy after losing in talent contest finals.

Unless Carissa Kennedy gets a hankering for free passes to the 2013 PNE, her husband Matt is thinking of giving next year’s talent competition a miss. For the second time, this 28-year-old Maple Ridge singer and guitarist won first place in the adult division of Star Showdown on Monday, but was knocked out in the finals the next night. “They only announce the top three in the finals, and I wasn’t one of them, so I’m just assuming I was ninth out of nine,” Kennedy said of Tuesday’s contest finale. Regardless, he’s pleased with his placement, having sung a rendition of Eric Clapton’s Tears in Heaven in the semi-finals that earned him $300 cash and a $10,000 scholarship to a fine arts institute. “So maybe I’ll go back to school,” said the former teacher turned professional photographer, who shared

him going on to big things with music. But mostly, he was a genuinely nice kid.” As for next year’s Showdown, Kennedy said he doesn’t think he’ll enter again – jokes aside about free tickets. This was his fourth time in the competition, and his second time winning in the adult division.

Our View

Virtue, vice can be mixed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is currently holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, the latest move in a complicated legal odyssey. Assange, an Australian, has angered governments of many countries, including the United States, by using WikiLeaks as a platform for the leaks of secret government or business information. His legal problems now, however, stem from an accusation of rape and sexual assault in Sweden. The problem has been sorting out whether Assange the hacker freedom fighter, and Assange the sexual assault suspect, can be the same person. U.S. and Canadian politicians have called for his execution, assassination, or jailing over WikiLeaks. He certainly has plenty of powerful enemies. Many supporters claim that the rape accusations are a witch hunt, just a means to discredit Assange or throw him in jail. But how unlikely is it that Assange – that anyone – may have a more complicated personality than one that is simply “good” or “bad?” We live in a country whose first prime minister founded the RCMP and linked the nation with railroads – while buying votes and taking corporate cash under the table. It is possible to be virtuous and strong in one aspect of life, weak and vile in another. We support the ideas of transparent government, of the freedom for whistleblowers to speak out, and we oppose the idea that governments have the right to keep secret anything they find embarrassing. These are among the founding principles of WikiLeaks. But we also support the rights of sexual assault victims to see their attackers tried in a fair court system. Even if Assange is tried and convicted, it would not mean that WikiLeaks was a bad idea. WikiLeaks must rise or fall on its own merits, not on any moral failings that may be tied to its founder. – M.C.

Albion Flats

Dear Editor,

Although I appreciate your correspondents’ ideas [Better uses for Albion Flats, Aug. 21 Letters, TIMES], what sense does it make for an Agricultural Land Reserve designation in a growing residential/commercial area? In support of their wishes, do you not

realize that, by increasing the density in the area, you now have more ignored ALR plots in the “country,” where this type of demonstration and cultivation would be much more apropos, using untainted land – which the Albion Flats are not.

Odd Thoughts

Leadership choices lacking Dear Editor,

Yes, Bob, poor leadership lasts forever. It was etched in our minds the years the NDP were the government. Your statement: “Sometimes leadership is misplaced. Maybe people making the decisions were misinformed or maybe nobody better was available at the time the choice had to be made [Poor leadership lasts forever, Aug. 21 Odd Thoughts, TIMES].” Unfortunately, this will be the case in the next election: nobody better will be available, Adrian Dix comes to mind. There are dubious choices only because of one’s bias. P.S.: I agree with you regarding Peter Kent.

Elections

Internet voting long overdue Dear Editor,

I am pleased that the B.C. government has asked the province’s election officials to examine the potential for Internet voting in provincial and municipal elections. I would also like to acknowledge Premier Christy Clark for leading this initiative. Modernizing B.C.’s electoral process was one of the key promises she made when she became premier, and long overdue. Low voter turnout has become an increasingly apparent issue in provincial and municipal elections. Internet voting has the potential to increase the number of voters who take part in the process, and that can only be good for democracy.

orders to okay the pipeline will come from Harper. Spills are going to happen, regardless of how much alleged care there may be. When a spill happens miles from anywhere, how soon will it be known? How long to get men and equipment in, to have boots on the ground? Damage to rivers and streams will be catastrophic for salmon and other wildlife. Various other bits and pieces of the environment that will be damaged, perhaps beyond reclamation. Why not railroad tanker cars down to tide water? What are we going to do when yet another salmon run is damaged or destroyed? As it is, extinction is already looming. As the oceans warm up, all kinds of wildlife are threatened. When one part of the food chain is damaged, there is a domino effect. The movers and shakers involved with the pipeline can only see the bottom line, all else is secondary – at the cost of the bit-bybit destruction of salmon and forests.

Health care

Nurse practitioners save money Dear Editor,

I was interested to read the letter by Fiona Hutchison, N.P. [Nurse practitioners needed, May 8, TIMES] I was not aware that nurse practitioners existed. I am surprised that the minister of health does not make more use of them. It would save money. One area is elder care in nursing homes. In B.C., 112 (32 per cent) of residential care facilities are owned and operated by B.C. health authorities, and 236 (68 per cent) by non-profit or private for-profit agencies under contract with a health authority, such as Fraser Health. The latter have a problem: access to doctors is difficult for patients who are not mobile. Busy doctors have seldom a chance to visit patients in facilities, and residential doctors do not exist. Doctors are not obligated, either by the College of Physicians and Surgeons or the B.C. Ministry, to visit in facilities. Patient care is provided by staff at the home. A licensed nurse practitioner could help solve the problem by rotating at regular intervals between residential care homes and visiting patients regularly as needed,

thus taking the burdens off doctors and licensed practical nurses in the homes. The LPNs often end up doing the visual diagnosing while discussing a patient’s condition on the phone, something I don’t think they were trained for. Recently, B.C. Ombudsperson Kim Carter completed a three-year study on elder care in B.C., entitled, The Best of Care, getting it right for seniors in B.C. I personally feel that NPs could fill a gap that now exists in non-profit or private for-profit institutions that offer residential care. Some statistics for these facilities: • One director of nursing for 102 patients; • One RN per facility that cares for 102 patients per shift; • One “front-line” LPN per shift per 34 patients (she contacts the family doctor); • Two care aides per shift per 34 patients, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; • Two care aides per shift for 34 patients, 3 to 9:30 p.m.; • One care aide per 34 patients, 9:30 to 11 p.m.; and • One LPN, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Used oil education on tap

Driveway mechanics are the primary target of a B.C.-wide program.

Two students are spending the summer up to their elbows in oil. And they’re happy to talk about it to help people understand the importance of recycling used oil. Emily Louie and Ali Omelaniec signed on to be ambassadors for the BC Used Oil Management Association. Their role includes handing out materials, speaking to the media, spending time with program stakeholders, and touring about 520 oil recycling facilities in 120 municipalities in the province. Last week the women came to Maple Ridge to take in the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society’s return collection facility. In their blog at www. bcusedoil.com the ambassadors noted, “This facility was one of the first [transfer stations] to start collecting oil and now collects a very large amount of stewardship program materials, including paint and lights.” The blog even made note of the bike exchange

Businesses that recycle oil correctly are highlighted in the blog as well. Those businesses involved with oil changes seem to understand the requirements of the program and have the infrastructure necessary to collect and dispose of the oil properly. Driveway mechanics are another story. “The biggest target is doit-yourselfers,” Omelaniec said. The used oil recycling program started in 2005 to get more people collecting and recycling used oil

as well as antifreeze (in 2011), and their respective filters and containers. “We have a recovery rate of 73 per cent of the oil,” Omelaniec said. While this a good recovery rates, it’s not good enough. More than 18-million litres of used oil are not recovered in B.C. each year. Rather than being recycled, that used oil ends up in landfills or other areas allowing it to leach into the environment and water systems.

• More information on the program is at www.usedoilrecycling.com and a full list of oil recycling locations at www.mrtimes.com

Fall flowers

Gardens can still produce colour Gardening by Anne Marrison

Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to amarrison@shaw.ca.

I

n late summer when annuals are lanky, tired, and dried out, a whole contingent of fall-flowering perennials are opening fresh buds for a display of colour that runs from August to frost. Some enjoy shade. For instance, the hardy fuchsia is perfect for planting under a north-facing window. There, the humming birds it attracts give hours of entertainment as they suck nectar from its single, fairly small, but very numerous purple and pink flowers. For reliable root hardiness, it is important to grow the basic species, fuchsia magellanica. This dies to the ground in most winters but always resprouts in spring. Clumps are tolerant of most soils, slowly increase and can be divided in spring when frost season is over. This fuchsia has many hybrids, some of which are said to be hardy. These may be root-hardy on south slopes and in coastal gardens, but need a very mild winter to do well in

the Fraser Valley. The golden-leaf form has been root-hardy in my zone 7 garden. Another long flowering, iron-hardy perennial is the Japanese anemone (Anemone japonica). Most grow close to three feet (one metre) tall and produce cup-shaped single flowers with a prominent yellow or green centre. The white and green-eyed hybrid “Honorine Jobert,” is especially lovely and so are the pale pinks. Japanese anemone also has blazingly pink flower types and also doubleflowered ones. Transplant roots establish easily. Meanwhile, mother reshoots in the original spot no matter how hard you try to relocate her. Her progeny are equally stubborn. Then there’s verbena bonariensis, which begins flowering in early August and continues almost till frost. The airy purple flower heads are at the end of rigid, spreading stems which rise to about two feet (60 centimetres). It’s a sun-loving South American immigrant and roots don’t always survive the winter. Since it seeds with great abandon, this isn’t a problem in relaxed gardens. Meticulous gardeners may decide it’s a weed. But this plant is a delightful companion plant since it rises above most of its neighbours without blocking light. Other sun-lovers include the late-flowering perennial

daisies. Some of the prettiest are the fall asters which produce bright pink, purple and white daisy flowers in such profusion they can cover the plant. Like all the daisy types, bees love them. Many dwarf varieties, no more than 12 inches (30 cm), are available. These need dividing about once a year. When the middle of the clump begins thinning out, it’s time to take up the plant and re-plant sections of the vigorous outer ring. Other good-looking daisy types include the gloriosa daisies (Rudbeckia hirta) species and hybrids and rudbeckia fulgida “Goldsturm.” Both are bright yellow daisies with black or brown central cones. They love sun, tend to spread out, and seed around. People who love spring crocuses would also enjoy autumn crocuses (Colchicum species). Most of the easily available ones produce large gobletshaped flowers in various pinks, pinkish-purple or white. Many have white throats and pink or pinkpurple surrounds. There’s also a double called “Waterlily.” Sometimes colchicum autumnale, which has smaller but profuse flowers, is available in white or pale-pinkish purple. All colchicums are dormant through summer but begin producing leaves as flowers fade.

Mr. Lube sends kids to camp

M

ore than 40 children with life-threatening illnesses and chronic disabilities were treated to an extra special time during Mr. Lube Week, held at the Zajac Ranch for Children from Aug. 6 to 10. The camp also offered a much-needed respite to over-stretched caregivers, who were able to rest at night knowing their children’s needs were being looked after by a team of trained medical staff. Mr. Lube, including the Maple Ridge location owned by Matt Siepmann, has raised more than $100,000 over the last three years and donated the money to Zajac Ranch.

Builders’ give to foundation

H

aney Builders’ Supplies in Maple Ridge raised more than $10,000 at its annual golf tournament held at Pitt Meadows Golf Course for Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. According to general manager Colin McIntosh it was a “great day” and they raised the most money since he has been there.

Pizza Hut has opened up a new location at 20690 Lougheed Hwy. after years, just blocks away from it’s former restaurant.

Pizza on the move

P

izza Hut has moved to new digs at the corner of Lougheed Highway and 207th Street (next to Waves.) I popped by to check if they were open yet and asked if this was the start of a new trend – shutting down the larger, out-of-fashion restaurants like the one they had for years just a few blocks away, in favour of this new modern look. But the people there didn’t believe this to be the case. Anyways, the new location looks bright, airy, and stylish, and they are open for business.

• Email a photo of you holding The TIMES to: timestravellers@mrtimes.com Sherryl and Terry Hansen of Maple Ridge recently returned from a four-week trip through Greece and Turkey, from Athens to Istanbul. They had this photo taken of them holding a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES, in a “beautiful“ town called Oia on the Greek Island of Santorini, famous for its whitewashed and blue domed churches. In the meantime, Maple Ridge’s Berard family, Miranda Berard, 13, and sisters Danica, nine, and Alexa, 16, along with Mom (Donna-Lee) and Dad (Chuck) took a 3,196-kilometre, 10-day road trip. Highlights included horseback riding in Banff, examining dinosaurs in Drumheller, touring the Hoodoos, Calgary Zoo, Fort Steele, Osoyoos, and Molson’s ghost town, and seeing their great, great-grandparent’s homestead in Blackie (near High River).

Pope cycles largely because he enjoys it, but it also saves money, keeps him fit, and it’s good for the environment. But Pope is also a strong advocate for cycling and wishes the municipality would invest more into cycling infrastructure to make the roads safer for both expert cyclists like himself and also for people who aren’t as adept as him but just want to hop on their bikes to go to the store. While Pope can maintain speeds of up to 40 kilometres an hour – thereby often staying with the flow of traffic – he said current bike lanes in Maple Ridge don’t encourage less skilled cyclists to ride their bikes around town. Summer reading wraps up with party at the bandstand sun alike. To reward them for their efforts, we are hosting two amazing summer wrap-up parties: The Kids Summer Reading Club finale will be held at the Memorial Peace Park bandstand on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will start with the medal presentation ceremony, where participants of both the Read-To-Me and Summer Reading Clubs will have a chance to be presented with a medal for their efforts by Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin and Councillor Corisa Bell. Following the ceremony we will have a mini-literacy fair in the park, with games, facepainting, balloons, and refreshments. Yesterday (Wednesday, Aug. 22) youth who participated in the teen Summer Reading Club participated in a wrap up party in Fraser Room at the library. It

Hammond Neighbours rally for run Hammond is the site of the local Terry Fox Run, and the neighbourhood’s residents are supporting the cause. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Hammond, an area located south of the Lougheed Highway, is one of Maple Ridge’s oldest neighbourhoods. With fenced yards, parks, a small pool, and a few homes built in the early decades of the 20th century, Hammond has a heritage feel to it. A sense of nostalgia tends to wash over you as you walk along the neighbourhood’s sidewalks. That kind of warm feeling, one where neighbours look out for one another, is what a group of Hammond residents are fostering through a modern form of technology: the Internet. The Hammond Neighbours, consisting of friends and neighbours in the Hammond (formerly Port Hammond) area of Maple Ridge, have a web page, www.hammondneighbours.ca. The group promotes heritage, community safety, beautification, development, and gardening, among other interests. They are also actively promoting the Terry Fox Run that’s going to be held in their neighbourhood. Maple Ridge’s and Pitt Meadow’s fundraising and awareness event, named after Canadian icon Terry Fox, starts at Hammond Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 16 and offers routes of one, five, and 10 kilometres. It’s suitable for runners and walkers, cyclists, and those in wheelchairs, on rollerblades, or pushing strollers. Even four-legged canine friends are welcome, provided they are on leashes. Through the Hammond Neighbours Facebook page, eight people have indicated that they

Troy Landreville/TIMES

Hammond Neighbours promoting the local Terry Fox Run on Sunday, Sept. 16 include: front row left to right – Duncan Cooley and brothers Logan, Evan, Austin, and Trey Biles. Back row left to right – Betty Levens, team captain Lara Cooley, Laetisha Biles, Susan Barker-Voisine, Saloumeh Zargari, Katie Stein Sather, Cyndy Johnson-McCormick, James Rowley, Leanne Koehn, Felix Rowley, and Zoe Koehn. plan to take part as a team. They are Laetisha Biles, James Rowley, Sandy Macdougall, Leanne Koehn, Leah Pillet, Lara Cooley, Tina Willard, and Jennifer Zickerman. Cooley formed a team because her four-year-old son Duncan had been so enthusiastic about the Terry Fox Run in recent years. This will be Duncan’s fifth Terry Fox Run, Cooley said. The first year was when Cooley participated while pregnant with her son. “He was very hyped about it last year,” Cooley said. “A fouryear-old, I don’t think would be appropriate for a team captain, so I decided to step in there, being his mom, and encourage him to keep doing something he loves doing.” The team has a modest fundrais-

ing goal of $500. “I want him [Duncan] to be able to see numbers and to see that a team can set a goal and meet it, and even beat it,” Cooley said. Last year, Cooley said, Duncan was keen about supporting “Terry The Fox.” “He was going to run for Terry The Fox,” she recalled. “He wanted to give away his toys to raise money to help Terry be a hero and help kids with cancer.” While fundraising for cancer research is a big part of the Hammond Neighbours’ motivation, it isn’t their sole purpose. “Sports is a great way to meet people and get a neighbourhood together,” Rowley said. While he hasn’t been personally affected by cancer, Rowley knows others who are facing a battle

against the disease. “Newly diagnosed, someone close to me,” he said. “It’s so new that it’s not widely known so I can’t say who.” Having someone so close to him affected with cancer is “a real reminder of mortality,” Rowley said. Everyone from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and beyond is invited to take part in the upcoming local Terry Fox Run. You can register for the run on site at 20601 Westfield Ave. starting at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16. The event gets underway at 10 a.m. and is expected to finish sometime around 1:30 p.m. For more information, or to sign up online, visit www.terryfox.org. • More online at www.mrtimes.com.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: A month of work faces you. Well, buckle up and shift into higher gear. Sunday/Monday emphasize your career, meetings with higher-ups, and their judgement of your efforts. There’s opportunity here, but it entails much work. Friends want to gather ‘round midweek, but wait until Tuesday evening onward to celebrate. Wednesday, a great plan, perhaps to travel with friends, or to them. Retreat Thursday p.m. to Saturday: you’re tired, your charisma ebbs – all’s fine. All week (to Oct. 6) you grow more urgent or impulsive about sex and big finances – careful, especially Tuesday. Taurus April 20-May 20: A very pleasant month lies ahead. At the very least, you’ll pick up hints of romance, your creative depths will awaken, beauty will drift into your sight, and pleasures will call. A “long night” of legal, intellectual or cultural barriers will end Oct. 5, so take heart. (I mention this because Sunday/Monday, though romantic and dreamy, might again encounter these barriers.) Contain temper Tuesday: others are watching. Your ambitions meet an open door Wednesday: apply, propose, showcase your skills. This could be a significant turn! Popularity, fun, soaring optimism late week! Gemini May 21-June 20: It’s “down home” time. You might find a new home, or bury yourself in repairs, gardening and children’s programs. (Your kids are the foundation of the rest of your life: as they wilt or blossom, so will you.) Your workload intensifies to early October: take care with diet, driving, tools and fire. Mysteries and deep urges surface Sunday to Tuesday: avoid a financial or intimate commitment or change. (The “big change” remains strong, fruitful.) Midweek’s gentle, wise and loving – grab a travel or investment opportunity. Build ambition’s foundations late week: new heights loom!

Cancer June 21-July 22: The main emphasis lies on communications, short trips, errands, paperwork, siblings, casual friends – and curiosity. Read, ask, learn while others are quite willing to divulge. You’ll feel a surface compatibility with almost everyone. Money continues to be good. Six weeks of anger, domestic friction now yield to a double effect: you’ll have romantic courage, and creative ambition, until early October. At the same time, you’ll feel that your domestic situation is holding you back – by October, this barrier will dissolve. Lucky finances Wednesday. Sweet understanding late week. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Turn your thoughts to money for the weeks ahead, to earnings, possessions, purchases. Sunday/Monday contain a couple of problems, and might bring a health concern, but these two days also offer money through work. (Now to 2018 is not the best time to purchase large machinery: it could contain electrical or fuel glitches. These same years beg you to travel internationally, attend higher learning, or plunge into a cultural ritual such as a wedding – but all these will entail giving up some work time or job security. I’d plunge into them anyway.) Opportunities, new people come midweek. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness are rolling to a yearly peak! Start important projects, call in markers, seek favours, submit proposals, ask for interviews, see and be seen. If you don’t know what to do, analyse your situation objectively, then step forward into what seems to be the best direction/venture. Realize higher-ups (and parents) are “in love” with you now to next June. They’re ready to give you a chance, to grant you favours – if you’re young, ask a parent for a down payment. Success times: Sunday a.m., Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday a.m. New love, late week?

Aug. 26 - Sept. 2, 2012

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Retreat, find sweet solitude. Some social life still bubbles through this week, so enjoy moments. Use the weeks ahead to rest and recuperate, to examine your life thus far and make plans for the future. Keep up with government and administrative chores (e.g., tax records, office systems) and attend to health concerns. Get that dental work started, or apply for medical insurance. Higher-ups and VIPs still favour you for two more weeks, so remain ambitious. Sunday/Monday accent home, kids, security: just slog on through. Romantic notions sweeten midweek. Tackle chores Thursday on. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your popularity ascends all week and the next few. (It’s stronger after this week, which contains a lot of personal vibes and interests.) You’ve worked hard; now celebrate, seek entertainment, be with friends, swim in joyous optimism (OK, at least a pinch of optimism) and flirt – with prospects of all kinds. Casual friends, siblings and short trips arise Sunday/Monday. Accept and issue invitations. Be gentle on the home front Tuesday: you’ll bask in success here Wednesday. Romance, creative urges and a winning streak bless you Thursday eve to Saturday. Love’s possible! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Be ambitious – the weeks ahead emphasize your career, worldly status and dealings with parents, authorities and bosses. (Notice how much easier all this is recently than three, four years ago?) As long as you’re eager and earnest, you’ll impress higher-ups and pass the tests they might give you. Right now, attitude is more important than skills. (Wish I’d known this 40 years ago!) Until October, it’s a good idea to put romance on hold. (You’d start an “imprisoning” love.) Money, spending need caution Sunday/Monday. Midweek’s busy. Sink into home, rest late week.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You start this week in fine form – your energy’s high, you attract admiring glances, and you’re in accomplishment mode. Still, the “serious skies” over your career ambitions remain – meaning you’ll progress through diligence, not through slacking. (And your home life, parent-kid relations, need calm, diplomacy, especially Sunday night.) Take care with money Tuesday – happiness makes you spend unwisely. But pounce on money opportunities – and social joys – Wednesday/Thursday. Late week brings short trips, casual friend and information. Gentle love wafts through this week. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18:Retreat,rest,contemplate and plan Sunday to Tuesday morning. Be spiritual, charitable. Avoid competitive situations. Midday Tuesday your energy and charisma start rising – but avoid arguments (especially with higher-ups, police, etc.) and accidents. By this night, and Wednesday, you head into luck and success, especially in love, sex, finances and career. Look deeply, pry off the covers, be a detective: golden discoveries await. (This applies right into late September.) Chase money Thursday eve onward: but don’t buy big things: prices are near a temporary peak. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Important relationships fill this week. You’ll face opportunities and challenges, co-operation and competition. You’ll gain if you cooperate, join, and lose if you demand or say “me first.” You’ve begun to change, and others might be a bit puzzled by you. (Virgos stand out here – very subtly, in a wee but growing amount, they’re pleased but perplexed. Well, they’ll come around.) Sunday (though it needs money caution) and Monday fulfill a wish, and bring social delights. Retreat, rest, contemplate midweek. Your energy and charisma soar Thursday eve onward. Love possible! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 604-560-1269
