Young piper pumpin’ in Scotland

Three Maple Ridge bagpipers join the SFU band at the world championships. Nine-year-old Cameron Ickert is hoping his lungs will grown soon so he can pump more air into his bagpipes – but his rela-

tive size didn’t stop him from travelling to Scotland to take part in the World Pipe Band Championships. After taking third place in the novice-juvenile category at the North Berwick Highland Games near Edinburgh with the Robert Malcolm Memorial Grade 4 band, Cameron and his

band mates are preparing for Saturday’s worlds. Cameron hails from a Scottish family and his grandfather’s cousin was a famous piper. If the nine-year-old has any say in the matter, he’s next. And while there aren’t too many words that Cameron uses to describe his early experience

in Scotland this past week, as the youngest member of Simon Fraser University’s junior Robert Malcolm Memorial Band, it’s clear why he is here. “I want to be a famous piper,” said the Maple Ridge youth, after facing the rigor of Scottish judges.

A wild thunderstorm hit the region in full force Tuesday night causing a spectacular show of bolts of lightning arcing across darkened skies. In Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows the show rolled in at 7:30 p.m. In Whonnock a tree was struck by lightning and the energy transferred to a gas line and ruptured the line, explained Howard Exner, Maple Ridge’s assistant fire chief. Pitt Meadows assistant fire chief Rob Chatton said the storm “was a great show.” “It was 7:30 p.m. when it rolled through and then we recieved a rash of calls from it setting off alarms,” said Chatton. “Because of the power spikes, the alarms reacted and we chased around false alarms.” Small sections in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows suffered brief power outages, but none lasted more than 15 minutes. Earlier in the week, on Sunday, the mercury rose to 32.9 C in Pitt Meadows. The hotter-than-hot reading broke its 2008 record for that day of 31.9 C. Five other communities in B.C. also topped their own records, including Pemberton where the temperature rose to a staggering 38.2 C, breaking a record 35.7 C set on the same day in 2008.

Three ducks waddle around freely on Ryan May’s expanding gardens in Pitt Meadows chomping up slugs that might otherwise destroy his crops. May was initially hesitant to let them wander, worried they’d trample his seedlings. But once he let them go free, he realized they knew how to step around the plants – they also take care of his slug problem and are much happier. “I’ve found a deep and satisfying love for these animals, which adds to their benefit and revenue,” May said “When they were in captivity and bored they were a sorry sight and made a terrible mess. However, he’s had help from volunteers, work parties, friends, and family and an apprentice. This fall, May is going to Guyana, South America, with Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO) to teach horticulture to youth ages 15 to 20. “Vocational training opportunities in Guyana are extremely limited, and agricultural potential is very high,” he said. As a fundraiser, he is selling apple trees. In addition, for every apple tree he sells here, he plans to plant two in Guyana. “It’s a great way for me to keep growing over the off season here,” May said about his upcoming trip. “While the clouds are grey and thick here, and snow falls, I will be growing bananas, graviola, acai, and passion fruit, among a hundred other things.” To buy an apple tree, contact May at ryan@livingland.org or look for him at the Haney Farmers Market where he sells produce from his farm weekly.

During the next several weeks – leading up to the 40 Under 40 Awards – The TIMES and Ridge Meadows Recycling Society are highlighting community members – 40 and older – who have through the years made a difference in the local recycling, environmental, and sustainability movement and who serve as an inspiration to future generations. Laurie Darcus with the City of Pitt Meadows is hoping everyone will try to make a small effort to change their habits in order to make a big difference to the environment. As a City staffer with the District of Maple Ridge in the 1980s, she started to notice a lot of waste at the office – paper and cardboard not recycled, and paper coffee cups in regular use. “I felt the need to make a change,” Darcus said. “I saw the world was needing some help.” This resulted in a municipal recycling program. Those were big issues in those days, Darcus said. But the world has changed, and now working at the City of Pitt Meadows, she has helped work on a wide variety of green initiatives to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. continued on page A6...

Jeep winner tests out his new set of wheels Other duck race winners

Groups that sold tickets for the Rotary Duck Race will probably get more than the proceeds of their tickets sales.

Second- to sixth-place prizes:

• Second-prize winner: Alanna Wadhwani won a luxury cruise for two aboard Holland America Lines. • Third-prize winner: Andrea Buckley won a household furniture and appliance package provided by Fuller Watson.

• Fourth-prize winner: Christine Goncalves won a weekend stay in Whistler and apparel gift certificate from Maple Ridge’s Mark’s Work Wearhouse.

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Franz Prokop is trying out his new Jeep, which he won just four days ago at the Rotary Duck Race. The current realtor and former Maple Ridge councillor bought about 25 tickets to support the Rotary club, which he used to belong to and which he called a “damned good club.” The Jeep – bright yellow-orange 4X4 – was donated as the grand prize by Maple Ridge Chrysler. But the big winners in the Rotary Duck Race are the organizations that sold tickets and, on Sept. 26, will receive the funds they raised and perhaps a little more from tickets sold by Rotary members. Pitt Meadows Paddling Club commodore Rick Hammer was selling duck race tickets at the Haney Farmers Market. With 100 per cent of the proceeds going back to the organization that sells the tickets, Hammer said “you get a really big bang for your buck.” At the farmers market and other venues, Rotarians set up the booth to sell the tickets, so the club only had to supply the manpower to sell the tickets, Hammer said. At the same time, being at the farmers market selling Rotary duck tickets, Hammer was able to raise the profile of the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club.

• Fifth-prize winner: T. Thompson won two rounds of golf for four, including use of a golf cart at Meadow Gardens Golf Course. • Sixth-prize winner: Brian Daniel-Scott won a 32-inch flat screen TV provided by Audio Video Unlimited at Haney Sewing & Sound.

Franz Prokop picked up his new Jeep Wrangler 4X4 this weekend from Maple Ridge Chrysler after winning it in the Rotary Duck Race. Maria Rantanen/TIMES

While the first priority was selling duck tickets, he was able to tell people about the programs being offered by the club on the Alouette River in Pitt Meadows. Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association was also involved in selling Rotary duck tickets, but the only snag they hit was that it was off-season for hockey players and the teams had already disbanded. But the executive members of the minor hockey association and their families sold tickets, according to the association’s president Glen Mund who called Sunday’s Rotary Duck Race a “great event.” “As an event, it’s fantastic,” he said. “We’re just trying to figure out a way to

get more involved.” Shantz was pleased with the 8,800 The hockey association has to do a “fair ducks tickets that were sold and he hopes bit” of fundraising in order to keep fees that next year all 10,000 will go. as low as possible and also to support But expanding it beyond 10,000 might families who can’t pay the fees but whose be a challenge, he said. children want to play hockey. Teaching people how to change their habits and how small things can make a big difference is one of the challenges. “You can change all of the fixtures and equipment you want, but you have to focus on people’s behaviour,” Darcus said. But once people learn a new habit, for example, to turn the light out when they leave a room, “it becomes natural, like breathing,” she said. After looking at what the City could do to be

more sustainable, Darcus started looking at how to get Pitt Meadows businesses involved – and it’s working, for example, one law firm in Pitt Meadows is functioning almost completely paperless. A recent Ipsos-Reid poll done by the City of Pitt Meadows showed that 90 per cent of residents wanted the City to be a leader in green initiatives. Darcus said Pitt Meadows is the perfect place for living a green lifestyle as one can walk or cycle almost anywhere,

especially with the City’s extensive bike network. “I’d like the community to be more involved,” Darcus said. “If we could get everyone in Pitt Meadows to do a [little more], that would make a huge difference.” For example, she often sees a plethora of cars idling in front of schools and at the train crossing in Pitt Meadows. Darcus pointed out that turning on a car is equivalent to 10 seconds of idling – so after idling for 10 seconds, it’s a waste of fuel.

Harper not fond of science

It’s nice to see Prime Minister Stephen Harper standing up for science. Like a solar eclipse, it happens only a few times a year. This week, Harper said that he’s going to stay out of the Northern Gateway oil pipeline issue. Should the pipeline be pushed through from the Alberta oilsands to the coast of B.C.? Leave it up to the experts, says the PM. It should be evaluated on an independent basis. We agree, science and engineering studies must inform this decision, especially on what the likelihood of a pipeline breach or tanker spill might be. But it seems Harper is using science as a political cover to avoid stepping into the messy, multi-way fight between pipeline opponents, proponents, and the premiers of B.C. and Alberta who are squabbling over the proceeds. In the past, Harper and his modern Conservatives have been no great respecters of science. Agree with them or not, the government has taken action on crime and the economy. But on issues of global warming and the environment, they have dithered and stalled, playing musical chairs with the Ministry of the Environment. Worse, poor current Environment minister Peter Kent is forced to instruct members of his own caucus that, yes, human-caused global warming is a real thing. Outside of Parliament, the Conservatives have tried to muzzle government scientists, shut down longstanding scientific research projects, and “streamlined” environmental legislation. The recent federal budget will lead to about 200 job losses among scientists and support staff at Environment Canada, and grants seem to be either drying up or changing criteria. It’s nice that Harper has found a new respect for science. It’s just a shame that he seems to have mislaid it until this week. – M.C.

Internment justifed by war Dear Editor,

Regarding a recent letter (Injury to one, injury to all, July 31, The TIMES), I would like to put in my memory of the event that happened to the Japanese at that time.

Because we were at war with Japan, all the Japanese who lived in Canada were moved inland and all their possessions were seized by the government. None was returned when they were-

Legal column offers helpful accident tips Dear Editor,

A recent column in your paper (Hit and run victims must garner details, Legal Briefs, July 28, The TIMES) provided a good explanation of steps that should be taken if you’re the victim of a hit-and-run collision. There are two types of claims if you are injured in a car accident. A claim under your own policy for accident benefits and a claim against the policy of the driver and owner of the other vehicle if they are at fault. However, you can also make a claim against ICBC directly where it can be shown that another vehicle was involved, but the identity of the driver and owner could not be determined despite your best efforts. That’s why it is important to make every reasonable effort you can to identify the other vehicle and driver in a crash in order to establish that it was indeed a hit and run, and to demonstrate you’ve taken steps to identify the other vehicle and driver. No matter who’s at fault, most people qualify for medical benefits. If you do, your basic Autoplan policy will help pay for your medical care and provide you with wage-loss assistance. We hope you never find yourself in a situation where you need to file a claim but it is good to know that in the event you do, ICBC is here to help.

Rob Wilson, acting director of claims services for ICBC

allowed to come back. I was living in Vancouver at the time and in 1946 married a man who lived in Deep Bay on Vancouver Island. At the time, his father was a foreman at the fish plant that was situated on the spit, which hired many Japanese workers who lived there. When they were moved out, the houses were searched as they had been rented from the company and many of them had basements full of arms and ammunition. I was also told that there were several caves up the coast that contained hidden stores of guns and ammunition. If all the Japanese had not been moved inland, some would have helped the Japanese to invade our country – many of them were still loyal to the Japanese government. I am tired of hearing how badly we treated these people, but it was for our own protection and there was not time to sort out the ones who would not be a danger to us. They were not the only ones who were interned. At least they were allowed to return and eventually regain their possessions.

Fare evaders need punishing In regards to TransLink’s fare evasion, this would never happen in other provinces or countries. Why should taxpayers pay for these freeloaders? Only in British Columbia. What are the directors getting paid for? Sitting on their rear ends collecting money from the trough, which the taxpayers are paying for. I just don’t get it. Nobody cares anymore. Why have a highly paid transit police force that is useless, when a ticket checker can do the same checking job for half the wages? The ticket checkers on the Hamburg transit system always travel in twosomes. Their presence is unannounced, therefore you’ll never know when they might show up to check for fare tickets. The Hamburg Transit Authority uses the “Third Strike, You Are Out” policy. The first time you get caught without a ticket, you will get fined 40 euros and you will get put into a fare-evasion register. The second time without a ticket, you will get fined another 40 euros. The third time you will get charged and you will have to appear in front of a judge for your sentence. They don’t screw around like they do over here. Our system is good for a laugh. In Hamburg there is no free bus ride, either. All buses are equipped with a turnstile bar, which has to be activated before you get to the back of the bus.

No pay, no activation of this bar. I have talked to the bus driver. No money, no bus ride. And by the way, all buses have two security cameras in the ceiling – which are visible. TransLink does not cater to the general public. These highly paid officials are only in it for big paycheques, empire building, and job security. I thought I would pass this on to you, since I rode the trains and the buses over there for the whole month of June.

Angels irrelevant Dear Editor,

I’ve just read the article [Ex of Haney Hells Angel given one year for knifing, July 31, TIMES] and I have to say articles like this make my blood boil. Why is it at all relevant that Shawna McCoach’s ex-husband is a Hells Angel? The relevant facts are she was pregnant, she attacked two women one of whom is her sister, and she’s been sentenced. Had she attacked the women from the back of her ex-husband’s bike, I would certainly see that as a point of interest, but such is not the case. This kind of propaganda is right up there with announcing a sex trade worker has been sexually assaulted. What difference does it make what she does for a living, she was attacked, end of story.

Emergency services

Hot tar pot ignites fire Fire crews were called to extinguish two blazes during the long weekend. by Sylver McLaren

smclaren@mrtimes.com

A roof-top fire on Friday night and a truck air conditioner on Monday were the start and end to a quiet long weekend for emergency services in Maple Ridge. Roofing supplies left behind by workers caught fire and left a couple of businesses with water damage on Friday night. Two stores – one empty and one a wine store – in the strip mall at 20306 Dewdney Trunk Rd. sustained minimal fire damage but substantial water damage, explained assistant fire chief Mark Smitton. “Roofers were on the roof during the day and their tar pot caught fire. Luckily a passerby spotted the fire and called it in,” he said. Ridge Meadows Staff Sgt. Mike Bhatti said the call came in at 10:40 p.m. and the fire was put out quickly. On Monday, a man was working on his son’s truck in the 22900 block of 116th

Avenue in Maple Ridge, said Maple Ridge assistant fire chief Howard Exner. “He was working on the compressor for the air conditioner. There was a release of some sort of gas that caught fire on the vinyl siding of the townhouse and extended all the way up to the attic,” Exner elaborated. “The neighbours worked hard to extinguish the fire using garden hoses on the exterior of the house,” he added. The fire travelled through an open window of the first floor and started a fire in the living room, but the sprinklers activated and put the fire out. When the firefighters arrived they took care of the hot spots and ensured all the void spaces were extinguished.

Fire deemed suspicious

Early Tuesday morning firefighters were called to a garage fire at a heritage home on St. Anne Avenue in Haney. It is now under investigation and has been deemed suspicious, Exner said. “It caused damage to the garage, fencing, and a tree,” he added. “The tree went up like a candle.”

You & The Law CHRONIC PAIN A LEGAL SORE SPOT

One of the hardest things to put up with is chronic pain. Mrs. M, 51 at the time of trial, knew that from bitter personal experience. Mrs. M had injured the soft tissues of her neck and shoulder in a rear-end accident. At the trial, 3 1/2 years after the accident, she still complained of pain. She also claimed she couldn’t return to work as a seamstress or resume her previous recreational and domestic activities. After the accident, Mrs. M received over 300 physiotherapy treatments and saw multiple medical specialists. None, however, could find any physical cause for her continuing symptoms. But none also suggested that she was malingering or intentionally hanging on to her problems. In the end, the B.C. Court of Appeal upheld the trial judgment awarding Mrs. M some $134,000 in compensation. The court said that where accident victims continue to suffer after their physical injuries have healed, an obvious question arises: Is such pain “real”? But, the court said, even if psychologically-caused, such pain is still compensable if the person can prove two things: first, that the psychological pain was caused by the accident and not by a desire for care, sympathy, relaxation or compensation, and second, that the person cannot overcome the problems through his or her own “will-power.” In another case, Mrs. Y, 53, also fought to prove her chronic neck and shoulder pain wasn’t imagined and should be compensated. She should have recovered from her soft tissue injuries within a few weeks or, at most, a few months after her car accident. But she didn’t. Before her accident, she ran the family home, played tennis and volleyball, taught her daughter dancing, singing and music, and was actively involved in their

church. After, however, she was depressed, couldn’t sleep, and suffered constant pain and discomfort. She spent most of her time in a wheelchair and wouldn’t leave the home alone. Her husband even quit his job to stay home and look after her. Mrs. Y was found to have a “somatoform pain disorder”–anunconsciousneedtobeinthedependent invalid role, with her husband and daughter expressing great concern for her and paying her lots of attention. Like Mrs. M, Mrs. Y wasn’t doing this on purpose, nor was she motivated by any conscious desire to resist getting better. The B.C. Court of Appeal awarded Mrs. Y even more money than Mrs. M – $75,000 for her chronic pain and suffering and more than $150,000 for loss of homemaking and other losses. In general, then, our highest court in B.C. has confirmed that chronic pain you suffer following an injury is compensable – even if there’s no physical reason to explain it – if the pain was triggered by the accident and you can’t overcome it through your own sheer will-power. But, remember, each case will be judged on its own specific facts, and more importantly, on the credibility of the person claiming ongoing pain and disability. Your lawyer can advise you and help you obtain fair compensation.

Cameron Ickert (centre) of Maple Ridge, nine, is in Scotland with the SFU pipe band. He will compete in the bagpipe world championships this weekend.

Piper unwinds playing cricket

“It’s a lot of work,” he conceded, “but once my lungs get bigger that will help.” SFU Pipe Sgt. Jack Lee called Cameron an up-and-coming talent. “He’s a great young player, very promising,” said Lee, who is also the pipe major of RMM’s Grade 4 band. “He’s a strong piper and he’s very motivated to play. He has a bright future ahead.” Cameron – whose sister Sarah is a drummer with the band – isn’t worried about winning at the big contest later this week – the World Pipe Band Championships on Aug. 11, which will see RMM’s Grades 3 and 4 bands and SFU’s elite Grade 1 band, eyeing its seventh championship, compete. “I’ll play my best. It’s just cool to be here,” Cameron said. He is also looking forward to turning 10 years old two days after the worlds. Along with the two young musicians, Grade 4 piper Russell Pengelly is also from Maple Ridge, as is piper Kevin McLean, of the senior band, who’s hoping the Grade 1 band can claim its seventh championship. “All of our bands are working hard this year and aiming high for wins at the worlds,” Lee said. “We (Grade 1) finished second last year and we would love to do a little better than that this year. “The competition is extremely tough but we are right in the thick of the action,” he added. “The Irish and Scottish bands are very, very strong. We are on a roll, having celebrated our 30th anniversary with a concert and new CD live from New York’s Lincoln Center. We hope to carry that momentum with us to Scotland.”

The Robert Malcolm Memorial (RMM) bands arrived in Scotland on Aug. 2 and participated in the North Berwick Highland Games on Aug 4. Young Cameron, looking proud and serious, helped lead his crew to an impressive third-place finish. It was the band’s first ever performance in Scotland and they were pitted against bands with players much older than their average age of 11. He was only “a little nervous” but the butterflies dissipated once they began to play. All of the bands will spend the week practising before the worlds on Saturday, Aug. 11 in Stirling, about an hour from Glasgow. The RMM band is named after two members of the SFU Pipe Band, Robert Barbulak and Malcolm Bokenfohr, who were killed in a car accident in 1993. It was formed to continue developing talented and dedicated players in the spirit of the two young men. The SFU Pipe Band will be also be participating in the world championships. In total there are more than 60 young musicians from the Grade 3 and 4 junior RMM band competing at the worlds along with the 44-member Grade 1 band. In all, with relatives in tow, the SFU contingent in Scotland tallies around 250. At John Forty’s Court student residence in Stirling, where the Grade 4s are staying along with the other SFU bands this week, Cameron has been unwinding by playing cricket in the courtyard. At home, Cameron practises daily and his friends think his piping is cool.

The Guldemet family of Hammond recently travelled to Efes, an ancient Roman town, as well as Pamukkale, Turkey. Fifteen-year-old Ashley, father Cengiz, 13-year-old Jorden, and mother Cherie, had a picture taken with their hometown newspaper, The TIMES, with a construction crane in the background. Meanwhile, Maple Ridge’s Noah and Dawson Marchand, Jaeden Hanif, and Sydney Marchand attended the NARch Roller Hockey finals in San Jose, Calif. recently, taking a few days in Vallejo at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom where they experienced the hot summer heat and the ultimate in sky-high thrills and had a picture taken with The TIMES.

Only two girls from B.C. were selected for the national basketball team.

Maple Ridge’s Kolbie Orum will compete at the U17 world basketball championship in Amsterdam, Netherlands from Aug. 17 to 26.

by Sylver McLaren smclaren@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge basketball star Kolbie Orum is on her way to Amsterdam, Netherlands to play in the U17 World Championship for Women. Canada Basketball selected 12 athletes who will represent Canada in the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur U17 worlds, which will be played from Aug. 17 to 26. “We just heard tonight that [Kolbie] has made Team Canada’s U17 women’s national team once again and is heading to Amsterdam to compete in the FIBA world basketball tourney,” said proud mom Rene Croft of the Maple Ridge Secondary student. “They train in Toronto until Aug. 10, head to Belgium for six days in exhibition games and then on to Holland,” Croft added. Emma Wolfram from Kamloops was the only other B.C. player named to the team. The other players on the roster are Christina Buttenham, Shay Colley, Kayla Davis, Kia Nurse, Audrey Ann Caron-

Albion tourney Last weekend the boys and girls U14 Western Canadian Championships took place at Albion Sports Complex in Maple Ridge. In the girls division Ridge Meadows Pride 99 came in third, behind champions Smitty’s Terminators from Manitoba and second-place Calgary Adrenaline. There were nine teams in the girls division and five in the boys. None of the boys teams were from the Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association.

Goudreau, Khaleann Caron-Goudreau, Quinn Dornstauder, Hannah Jardine, Emily Potter, and Saicha Grant-Allen. “We are very excited about our group of twelve. Over the past year, several individuals have shown tremendous improvement, and made our decisions very difficult,” said head coach Carly Clarke. “Overall we have a great deal of size, length, athleticism and versatility, which should allow us to play in a variety of ways and with a variety of lineups.” The team qualified for the FIBA U17 World Championship by placing third in last year’s FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women. The youth women’s program is currently ranked fourth in the world in the FIBA rankings. The team will have a great deal of experience with seven players returning from last year’s Canadian Cadette Women’s National Team that won a bronze medal at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Returning players include; Audrey Anne and Khaleann Caron-Goudreau, Grant-Allen, Jardine, Nurse, Orum, and Wolfram. Players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1995. “We are pleased to have our U17 program competing in its second consecutive FIBA U17 World Championship for Women,” said director of Women’s High Performance, Denise Dignard. “This is an opportunity for our staff to work on developing our top international prospects at an age-group world championship, as they strive to become world class and represent Canada at the World Championships and Olympic Games.” In this year’s FIBA U17 World Championship for Women, Canada has been placed in Group A which includes Belgium, Italy, Korea, Mali, and U.S.A. Their first game will be against Italy on Friday, Aug. 17 at 12:45 p.m.

Soccer

Team out of the running for Olympic gold by Sylver McLaren smclaren@mrtimes.com

The team in which soccer goaltender Karina Le Blanc represents Maple Ridge – and Canada – was

handed a blow on Monday afternoon during a heartbreaking 4-3 loss against the United States. Despite a valiant effort, particularly from Le Blanc’s teammate Christine Sinclair, who scored

a hat trick, the women still fell short in the end. Now they face France in the bronze-medal game today (Thursday). “They’ve come to see the flag rise. That’s the job. They came

here for that and the job is not finished. They’ll be disappointed tonight because it won’t be gold or silver, but we’ll take a medal from this tournament,” said head coach John Herdman.

604-630-3300 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ popularity, social delights, entertainment, flirtation and wish fulfillment – enjoy, especially Wednesday noon to Friday. Sunday’s mellow, wise, offers relationship harmony. For the past few years, your career has struggled and presented you with inexplicable glitches, just as it does this Monday to Wednesday. The root “cause” has been a shifting home or lack of a solid foundation (family support?) coupled with relationship volatility. The career problem will largely end by Oct. 5 onward (though the volatility and “shifting home” won’t). Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: March forth on ambitious fronts, especially Wednesday afternoon to Friday. Lifestyle and health changes go well Sunday, as do intimacy and finances. You can find a workable plan. Good day to invest in large machinery. Monday to Wednesday highlights your major problem this decade: glitches and barriers in educational, ethical, publishing, legal, cultural or international (far travel) zones. Root cause: changeable work conditions and/or stress. The good news is, these problems will shrink by half from October onward. (There isn’t any bad news.) Saturday brings hope, joy! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: This is a lovely, smooth and enlightening week, except for the Monday to Wednesday period, when problems (re)erupt in sexual, financial, research, diagnostic, health and/or lifestyle areas. These problems are likely not new – some have been around since 2008, some since 2010.The difficulties will be reduced by half from Oct. 5 onward – the same date marks a “new future” for you, in the sense that a wet blanket lifts off your social, romantic situations, and you will grow much more optimistic. Decide now, between quick or delayed money, casual or committed intimacy. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The mystery continues,

GARAGE SALE Sat Aug 11th 9am-4pm 19878 Fairfield Ave (Pitt Meadows) Household and some pet items!!

August 12 - 18, 2012 so be a detective. You have 10 days to find all the clues or “evidence.” The accent lies on depths, sexual urges, financial manoeuvres, lifestyle changes, commitments and consequences. Wednesday noon to Friday highlight these concerns, then Saturday brings understanding – you see all these (sex, finances, et al) in a bigger picture. Tackle chores Sunday – you’ll succeed easily. This week’s only challenges arise in relationships Monday to Wednesday: be diplomatic, realize others hold the “temporary aces.” Root of the problem: your security is erratic. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A great week! Sunday’s romantic, Wednesday to Saturday bring exciting meetings, perhaps new love. But Monday to Wednesday brings a flare-up of employment and health problems that have irritated you for a few years. Avoid wonky wiring, dangerous machinery. Seek a diagnosis. A government agency will either help or obstruct you. Nervous stress (probably associated with travel, friends, or a legal or cultural matter) is at the root of those work or health problems. Stress strips us of emotional feeling and sensation, two necessities. By October, the problems will ebb to half. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The main accent lies on work, health, machinery and dependents. You can take good steps forward in these zones Wednesday noon to Friday morning. (Aug. 12, too, if a dependent is involved.) For a few years, romance, creativity and risky ventures have run into brick walls. Some of these walls will crumble by October. Meanwhile, you can get yourself ready for future love, pleasure, creativity, etc., by seeing what is throwing up these walls: desire for money is the main “brick-builder.” (By summer 2013 onward, lucky love, creativity, will re-enter.) A friend, a prospect, Saturday! timstephens@shaw.ca
