New Brothers

Three men were initiated as full brothers in Phi Mu Alpha on April 26 in Kelce auditorium. During the probationary process Justin Garrison decided to drop out.

Spring 2014 rush week was very successful for the spring semester. We had around eight men show up to our events and ended up making three of them probationaries! We pinned Austin Dillingham,Walker Duty, and Justin Garrison into the Chi class. As well as our probationaries we have one honorary member, Cooper Neil. Cooper Neil is the band director at Pittsburg High School and has turned their band program around. Under his guidance the band now has more respect from the student body and faculty and Cooper has made strides in having all students in the music program work together.

Advancing American Music The theme for this semesters American Music Recital was to have a more serious recital. We held the AMR on April 2 and had groups, soloists, and the Sigma Alpha Iota ladies. For the more fun side of the AMR we had the Beta Delta Brass Band, comprised of all brothers, and a small ensemble that performed “Pick up the Pieces” by the Average White Band. In fall 2014 the chapter will be hosting a charity for music programs in Southeast Kansas. Our event will be a band showcase and will feature many local musicians as well highschoolers from the local area. We would love to have your support. We do not have a date set, but we will keep everyone up to date on our progress. The chapter was presented with the opportunity to donate money to the Galena High School band program to help raise money for new percussion instruments. We donated $50 to the cause and the program successfully raised all the money needed.

PSU Center for the Arts

The Center for the Arts, which will be located just south of the Weede Physical Education Building on the corner of Homer and Ford streets, will be the university’s first large, on-campus performance venue since Carney Hall closed in 1978. It will include two performance halls, a grand entrance lobby appropriate for receptions and other gatherings, an art gallery, a workspace for an artist-in-residence, a private reception room, a multiuse rehearsal space for large musical groups, and various technical and support spaces. Future plans call for a garden courtyard/ reception area on the south side of building, along Ford Street. The center will be open for use in Spring 2015. In the 2012 – 2013 school year the chapter decided to rasie money for the center for the arts. After many successful fundraisers we raised $500 and were able to get a chair in the Center for the Arts named for the chapter. In Fall 2013 we were contacted by alumni wanting to help us start a fund, after finding out we had already raised money, we prospoed to get another chair in the center named for our alumni. At the end of this semester we reached our goal of $500 and have a chair for our alumni. We have raised a total of $1,000 for the multi-million dollar facility. Chapter Chair Name
