Character Concept Artist Not every idea has to be original - you can make magic out of things that already exist. This idea is what inspired my creative process over the pandemic, and falling back into familiarity has kept me creating; by expanding upon concepts that I already know and love, I’ve rediscovered my passion for art. By refinding my passion, I’ve pushed myself in my final year of study and can say with certainty that I will leave this institution proud of what I have achieved.
Falling back into familiarity has meant falling back into the stories that inspired me as a child: fairy tales and mythologies; stories of great romances and harrowing tragedies. Magic and monsters and gods - all concepts I’ve aimed to reinterpret in my final project. I wanted to create an idea that would stick with a young adult audience, while indulging my own nostalgia in the process; and as such have tackled a reinterpretation of the myth of Cupid and Psyche - a.k.a the original Beauty and the Beast. I wanted to challenge Disney’s monopoly on fairy tales, and show that there’s always space for new takes on old stories. Creativity lends itself well to making magic, and what better place for magic than a fairy tale retelling?
What hobbies do you do outside of uni? “Reading, Dungeons and Dragons, baking, sewing, m y t h o l o g y s t u d i e s , a r c h e r y. ”
An artist who inspires you. “Lyndsey Gallant” What do you enjoy creating the most/what projects do you do in your free time? “I love creating characters and designing outfits inspired by modern interpretations of old time trends. Blending in fantasy with reality to create characters that exist in their own worlds. I’m currently working on commissions and concept art for various mod projects.”

ALEXANDER WA L L E R
Illustrator Alexander Waller has developed a series of illustrations for use in a tradable card game (TCG). The work has been developed using Photoshop to create detailed illustrations and designed in the style of a graphic novel. The theme of the game is inspired by franchises such as Mad Max and Tre a s u re P l a n e t a n d re l a t e s t o t h e g e n re s o f h i g h fantasy and post-apocalyptic warfare. It takes place between opportunistic pirates as they fight over scarce and rare resources. The paintings illustrate a strong design concept that could be used to develop a finished game. The two finished illustrations with their card counterparts show how they would be used within the game.

Illustrator ‘Orpheus’ Ballad’ I am a mainly 2D artist focused mostly on character design. I enjoy creating colourful and interesting designs with a focus on expression and design. This project involves a visual novel style game in which the player is able to interact with other characters and explore an expanding story as they progress through the game. It involves characters with unique personalities and interesting designs, scene designs that should make the places come to life and an ever changing story that should keep the player hooked. I have decided to use my unique art style for this project, as it should stand out and look good for this project. After university I intend to work freelance for some time in order to improve and develop my business skills before hopefully finding work somewhere more permanent. It would be good to find work in a smaller company as I like the idea of working on some more indie style games (and I also feel like my art would work best for this kind of work). I hope to utilise my skills as a character artist and continue to make many more interesting characters, as well as hopefully improving my environment art.

Concept Artist / Cartography Illustrator My project Fatesight was set to develop a game concept. Having started the project, I am planning to t u r n i t i n t o a T a b l e To p R o l e P l a y i n g G a m e . I s p e c i a l i s e in 2D concepts, especially characters, but assets and environments too. Also adept at 3D models using 3DS Max, to a proficient level, for paint overs, and make t e x t u r e s i n S u b s t a n c e D e s i g n e r. A n e w f o u n d f o c u s f o r m e i s c a r t o g r a p h y, c r e a t i n g m y o w n a s s e t s a n d t e x t u r e s fo r s o f t w a r e l i k e Wo n d e r d r a f t . An inspiration to my working practice is the genre of Science Fiction and Fantasy literature, and in this project is a direct reflection of this interest. These w o r l d s h a v e s u c h a n i n - d e p t h s t o r y, t h e y ’ v e b e e n inspiring me for most of my creative life. I have a passion for creating stories through my work, something that began as a hobby has become a focus for my practice. In all my artwork I try to think of the little details that will aid in telling the story of that character or world. A compass on their belt showing they’re some k i n d o f n a v i g a t o r, o r a l a r g e s k e l e t o n i n t h e d e s e r t t o show the size of ancient beasts that used to live there.
What hobbies do you do outside of uni? “Cooking, gaming, streaming on Twitch, and watching f ilms, wanting to start doing video analysis on f ilms I love, but it’s finding the time to.”

The project Fatesight was originally planned as a video game, however going forward p o s t - U n i v e r s i t y, m y p l a n i s t o t u r n t h e p r o j e c t i n t o i t s o w n T T R P G , w i t h i t s o w n r u l e s , classes, lore, and weapons. Gameplay / Game Mechanics Designer H i , m y n a m e i s O l i v e r. I a m a G a m e D e s i g n e r that works specifically in game mechanics. I can also do level design if the work asks for it. This project was quite interesting, I tasked myself to create a game with parkour mechanics, that would a l l o w f r e e d o m o f m o v e m e n t f o r t h e p l a y e r. A l l w h i l e having a basic end goal. So, I came to the conclusion mid-way through the development to make it a speed runner game. It is not uncommon to see the direction of a game change, mid-way through development. This was actually a good first-hand experience to see how the development cycle of a game happens.

Concept Artist UNWRI T TEN is a hypothetical story driven action-adventure g a m e f o c u s i n g o n t h e g r o w t h o f t h e m a i n c h a r a c t e r, Folamh, as she journeys towards enlightenment. The outcome of the project is unique as it is a journal that acts as a cross between an artbook and an in-game artifact.
Throughout my studies I have always gravitated towards character concept art. I enjoy working in a variety of styles, and this project was an opportunity to showcase my ability to work with realism through photobashing. I have always enjoyed aspects of costume design, and try to ground my work in realworld cultures and traditions in order to create depth in my characters. UN WRI T T EN allowed me to explore a variety of historical and current cultures such as Celts and Tibetans, as well as ancient mythologies from China and Europe. The project also provided me with an opportunity to build a portfolio geared towards AAA studios. My pre-production artwork has clear flow and direction, and showcases design exploration and problem solving. DOUG CLARKE he/him
3D Character Artist / Animator The intent of this piece was to create an interesting character design that c a n s h o w o f f m y c r e a t i v i t y. O n t o p of that, I also used this project to simulate as closely as possible the development pipeline that would take place in an actual game studio. This made the creation of the character as important as the final piece. With this, I can show potential employers the skills that I have, and the technical know-how to implement them. There were a lot of steps during the d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h i s c h a r a c t e r. T h e main focus early on was to create a design that had a lot of detail and shape to it, while still being simple enough to be usable if it were brought into a game. This also carried over into the texturing of the model, altering texture settings to give the illusion of detail while keeping the model itself as a flat surface. By keeping the file s i z e s m a l l a n d l i m i t i n g c o m p l e x i t y, it also makes it much easier to prepare the model for animation. By forcing myself to adhere to the workflow as if I were making a game i n a c o m p a n y, I c a n s h o w e m p l o y e r s that I understand the process of b u i l d i n g a c h a r a c t e r, f r o m i n i t i a l concept to a finished piece. This will be an invaluable skill to have when looking for employment.

Character / Asset Concept Artist I work almost exclusively in the realm of fantasy and the sub genres within. I’m not opposed to working in sci-f i or even r e a l i s m , I j u s t h a p p e n t o p r e f e r f a n t a s y. A l o t o f m y w o r k e i t h e r relates to D&D or it’s taken directly from any campaigns I’m in.

What has been your favourite part of studying at PCA? “Getting the opportunity to branch out into digital art, to come into my own as an artist and improve my skills.”

JESS FREEGUARD - WHITE she/her
Character Concept Artist / Concept Artist For this project, I created a horror game concept in which the main character is involved in a traumatic accident, resulting in them being haunted by their past and fears in the form of hallucinations and flashbacks. These visions impact the characters’ daily life in subtle and extreme ways, forcing them to figure out what is real and what is in their mind. Many of the illusions can be deceptive, meaning that if the player makes certain decisions the character will become stuck within said illusion. As I wish to pursue a career in character design, I decided to depict my game concept in the form of a character poster that gives an indication as to what players could expect from the game, were it to exist. I built up this character throughout the project, changing different clothing styles, colour palettes and overall feel of the character multiple times before settling on a more modern-day alternative look, as I felt this fit the horror theme more accurately than previous designs. Creating this project allowed me to not only explore the parts of the design process that I enjoy but also aspects that were new to me, having the creative freedom to do as I pleased was challenging yet eye-opening, I look forward to working on more concept art and character art in the future.
What do you enjoy creating the most/what projects do you do in your free time? “I enjoy creating character pieces of my characters and others’ characters. In my free time, I create Minecraft skins on a commission basis. These skins then get sold on the official Minecraft Marketplace. On top of this, I am working toward enhancing my art skills and working on pieces for my portfolio.” What hobbies do you do outside of uni? “My hobbies include playing video games and dnd, knitting, watching ridiculous movies with friends and walking in the countryside.”
Concept Artist I am a concept artist specialising in c h a r a c t e r d e s i g n s . Wo r k i n g m a i n l y i n a digital format, my work has a clear graphic style with clean lines and vibrant colours. For this project, I wanted to focus on creating a range of characters based on the theme of Cyberpunk. I have designed and created four different characters based on this genre that would inhabit the fictional world of my design. Each of these characters has a different role in this world and their designs reflect this. The inspiration for this project was to expand on previous work related to futuristic character designs and visual development. The overall aesthetic for cyberpunk is a fusion of futuristic designs in contrast to the dark and neon colours. My main career aspirations for the future is to become a concept artist so that I can create a variety of designs from props to characters. I would like to work as part of a game studio however I am not limiting myself just to the games industry and would like to work in other types of media.

Character Concept Artist / Concept Artist Creating art has always been my love and passion since I was a little child. As I have gotten older creating worlds through art and world-building has become my main hobby and interest. Designing characters for a world I created and illustrating the environments I envisioned is incredibly rewarding to me. This is why I chose to create my own fantasy MMO world for my final year project. I wanted it to incorporate everything I enjoyed in games I played but for the setting to be of my own creation. This world, characters and systems are ideas I have had for many years so this project is a labour of love for me. This is why the booklet I made involves so much information on so many different topics. I want the reader to learn as much as possible about this fantasy setting as possible. I think creating this fantasy world has really helped me during a time of stress in the pandemic. Putting my mind within a made-up place that I can change gave me a sense of control and relieved a lot of worry from current global problems.

SAM GROTZKE he/him
2D Generalist For my final project at Plymouth College of Art, I have designed characters for a hypothetical game based on my favourite poet, John Keats. Throughout my time at Plymouth College of Art, I have looked to a range of sources for inspiration. I’ve worked with Brutalist architecture, Baroque fashion, Celtic history and C u b i s m t o n a m e a f e w; b e i n g a b l e to research and play with these different aesthetics is my favourite part of the process because it is as though you are learning a new visual language each time, as well as the history and context that come with each.
The pursuit of this process led me to the aforementioned hypothetical game, in which Keats is on his deathbed, dreaming of his poems and blurring the line between his real life and his fiction. This premise allowed me to combine the ancient Greek setting of one poem, ‘Lamia’ (1820), with the setting of Keats’ life, Regency era England. Silhouettes, patterns, and shapes are blended in the dreamscape with influences from both eras to create a new design aesthetic formed around the subjectivity of his perspective. Although a challenging project, I felt it was important to be ambitious, forcing myself to improve as much as possible in preparation for b r e a k i n g i n t o t h e i n d u s t r y.

3D Character / Prop Artist For my final university project, I wanted to put all of my abilities for creating 3D models to the test. I wanted to create three very different models and put them in a scene t o g e t h e r, w o r k i n g f r o m c o n c e p t , m o d e l l i n g , p o s i n g t h r o u g h to rendering in v-ray to give my models the best outcome. I have always loved fantasy and dragons are one of my favourite mythical creatures so it made sense for my final piece to create a 3D model of a dragon as the main creature, for the character I wanted to create an androgynous alien character with virtiligo as I feel they aren’t represented e n o u g h w i t h i n t h e g a m i n g i n d u s t r y, a n d f o r t h e m e c h i w e n t f o r a s e n t i e n t c h a r a c t e r, a m e c h a n i c a l c h a r a c t e r t h a t w a s inspired by wall.e and the iron giant with how kind natured they are.
Artists who inspire you. “ C e d r i c P e y r a v e r n a y, o n e o f t h e m a i n a r t i s t s that worked on the concept art for the Dishonoured games, he created oil paintings of the character concepts as the developers wanted a fine art approach, and the work is extremely admirable.”
What is your favourite game or a game that you are currently playing? “One of my favourite game franchises are the Half Life games, the level design and narrative i s w h a t i n s p i r e d m e t o w a n t t o w o r k f o r t h e g a m e i n d u s t r y. ”

Concept Artist Sofia is an aspiring concept artist and i l l u s t r a t o r. E v e r s i n c e s h e w a s l i t t l e , she’s had a huge passion for creating characters and telling engaging s t o r i e s w i t h t h e m . Ta k i n g i n s p i r a t i o n from games and animated series, she started off by scribbling on the back of her school assignments and is now bringing those little ideas and characters to life through digital art. Paradise 12 is built with an RPG system in mind and with a strong focus on storytelling. Building connections with the other inhabitants of this colorful fantasy world full of intrigue and mystery will be a key part of the adventure, making the players pick their allies and their enemies as they slowly uncover more and more of the history of this version of the afterlife.
This final year project is a big love letter to all the stories and worlds Sof ia’s created on her journey t h r o u g h h i g h s c h o o l a n d u n i v e r s i t y, aimed at creating something magical and memorable to culminate this chapter of her artistic life.
Going from here, she’ll keep on expanding the world of Paradise 12 and creating a compendium of all its inhabitants and lore while looking for work as an illustrator/concept artist.
What hobbies do you do outside of uni? “I run a DnD campaign and play in one regularly as well. Aside from liking videogames, I really enjoy solving puzzles, stargazing and collecting all sorts of things.”

3D Artist / 3D Level designer / 3D Prop Artist Through my years of study I initially began as a Concept Artist but found a love for level designing and 3D, I then set out to hone my skills in this field. I started designing and creating low poly models which then went onto become high poly high detailed environments assets. This project has motivated me to now showcase my best ever results and skills by creating beautiful 3D environments in stunning detail without using any premade Assets. This project has provided me with the necessary opportunities to create a portfolio that will cater to triple A studios as well as freelancing. My final production showcases my skill in level design, level creation, asset design and textures. All the basics to make a nicely detailed 3D game. The main goal is a horror game as the genre has always fascinated me however if done correctly this project opens doors to possible opportunities of creation for other photorealistic genres. The showcase of this game will wow the audience with the amount of detail and design used in the project.

M AYA L E N T O N she/they Concept Artist Apotheosis: The Grey Age is a hypothetical dystopian sci-fi fantasy game, loosely following the story of the Legend of Robin Hood, which aims to present this well-known t a l e w i t h f a m i l i a r i t y a n d i n c l u s i v i t y. Throughout my studies, my art style has aimed to blend realism with the limitations of games using photomanipulation, 3D modelling and traditional texture, a style that AAA companies tend to lean towards. As a concept artist, I enjoy both character and environment art and this project was created in order to strengthen these skills. I have always been intrigued by dark history and folklore so Apotheosis suited both my interests and style. I enjoy painting natural forms and so, being on Dartmoor’s doorstep, chose a theme inspired by local sites. Furthermore, a s a q u e e r c r e a t o r, r e p r e s e n t a t i o n is important to me. In order to bring inclusivity into my work, my character Avis was conceptualized with gender neutrality in mind, giving players the freedom to change their presentation as they see fit. This genderless feature is something I hope to see more of in mainstream role-playing games, an idea which I discussed in my thesis: Queer Representation in Games Through the Lenses of Reception, Community and Character Creation.

What do you enjoy creating the most/what projects do you do in your free time? “I really enjoy painting scenes with a strong sense of narrative and lots of texture. Also I take on commissions outside of my studies, one of which included being chosen to digitally paint Plymouth College of Art.”
Throughout the course of my degree, I have developed my skills in a variety of digital software including Photoshop, Indesign, Autodesk Maya and Unreal Engine. My practice involves storytelling from ideation to concepts to the finalised piece.
What hobbies do you do outside of uni? “Much of my free time is spent socialising with my f r i e n d s a n d f a m i l y, p l a y i n g games, book-binding or doing cross-stitch.”

3D Environment Artist Throughout my time studying at PCA over the past three years I struggled with finding a medium that allowed me to fully express my ideas. I tried my hand at drawing, creating characters and sketching landscapes but found that I was never really happy with the art that I was creating. It wasn’t until I experimented with 3D modelling software and the Unreal Engine that I found a w a y t o m a k e m y i d e a s a r e a l i t y. I ’ v e a l w a y s h a d a l o v e f o r a l l t h i n g s f a n t a s y, s c i - f i a n d anything that I can fully immerse myself in, and creating atmospheric and immersive environments on the Unreal Engine has been the best way for me to ‘scratch that creative itch’. This final project has given me the perfect excuse to create something to showcase all the skills that I have learned over the last few years of study in order to create a scene that is interesting, dramatic and immersive.

2D Environment Artist For my final project I wanted to create an art book to act as a visual guide of a videogame setting I have built that takes place in an early age desert world that runs by the laws of a l c h e m y. T h e g a m e w o u l d b e f o r t h o s e w h o e n j o y l o w f a n t a s y, w i t h a focus on survival within a political narrative. One revolving around the struggle over the freedom of access to alchemical knowledge. From which I have produced a book to demonstrate the aesthetic and designs of the game through my concept art. The art shows the development of the arid and desolate town of ‘Spherica’, as well as the inhabitants and the society they have created for themselves. I wanted to create a game that is able to utilise an intuitive way of altering the world around you to survive both the harshness of the arid setting, and the cruelty of the oppressive townscape. This i s w h y I w a n t e d t o e x p e r i m e n t w i t h a l c h e m y, a n d h o w i t c o u l d b e used under limitations set by a dictatorial faction within the game.

Character Concept Artist I wished to prove to myself that I could design believable characters; that I have a way of producing art that I could call my own, to become a 2D character concept artist and one day help to bring video games alive, like so many others. This game idea has 2 playable characters venture out into harsh weather conditions in order to learn about the world, the local culture, the past and future, in order to reach the barrier between sky and land. Environment Concept Artist My preference for art is that of 2D environment art depicting real-life places and things, and I prefer to work from my own photography work since I like to go out on “Expeditions” and discover places I would like to paint and work with. I also like to incorporate other hobbies of mine into my artwork, such as my love for steam engines and heritage railways. I also like to use cosplay in my work when I am developing character designs since I always find it easier to work with things that I have a particular fascination with. And taking along a camera always means I can get some excellent shots not only for my artwork but for my portfolio as well. Although the last years of my university life have been challenging to say the least, with the current world events, I would have to say I have enjoyed my time there and the opportunities it has given me. I have also met such wonderful people and had the pleasure of working with them at Plymouth College of Art. It certainly had been a memorable time, to say the least. W h e n I l e a v e u n i v e r s i t y, I p l a n t o c o n t i n u e t o d e v e l o p m y s k i l l s as an artist in all aspects and discover the best path for myself and my work to take for the future. I also hope to take on smaller freelancer jobs to develop my time management and business skills. I know I have a lot of work to do to get that to the level I want it to be. 2D Environment Artist / 3D Generalist For the last 3 years I have gained a huge amount of knowledge and skills, much of which are considered fundamentals. With the end of this course I am looking forward to complete creative freedom, and a chance to truly test and hone the newly acquired skills. The main area I will be focusing on will be landscape concepts, following Bob Ross for many years, I’ve become accustomed to happy little trees and clouds, and I feel confident in my ability to replicate h i s t e c h n i q u e s d i g i t a l l y, s o f o r m y next stage in personal growth I will be experimenting with the already familiar style of Bob Ross, and then adding a lot of drama, sometimes a happy cloud won’t do, but a raging storm cloud will.
This next year will be where I will explore the game industry in greater detail, and with some luck and a lot of effort, I hope to find employment either with a triple A company or indie.
What hobbies do you do outside of uni? “I’m an avid cook and a big fan of gardening, having 2 dogs. I frequently go for adventures through wooded areas and fields and one of my favourite pastimes is when meeting with friends and my partner to watch RuPauls Drag Race.”

Character Concept Artist / Illustrator I am an illustrator specializing in painterly artwork and character and creature designs! I ’ v e a l w a y s l o v e d b o o k s a n d f a n t a s y; the illustrations within were always an inspiration to me. Creating art for stories of all varieties is a goal I want to pursue. I enjoy seeing how different artists interpret what they see and infuse their own personality within their work! During my studies at PCA I got the chance to come up with many different and unique concepts and settings for my characters including futuristic ancient egypt, post-apocalyptic norse wasteland, a surrealist, cute garden and a dark, open-world monster hunting game. Throughout my practice I have always focused more on illustrative technique rather than design, but this experience has been great for me and I would like t o c a r r y i t f u r t h e r a f t e r m y s t u d y. I have definitely become a lot better with releasing my own ideas out into the world!

3D Environment Artist / Hard Surface Artist T h e M a d G e n i u s’ Wo r k s h o p i s a s c i -f i n e a r futuristic improvised laboratory/workshop set within an old wooden barn. A retired eccentric genius inventor bought the barn and retrofitted it into a workshop to continue their groundbreaking work, the latest and greatest of which is a robot with advanced artificial intelligence. It features various sci-fi machine props, including robots, command consoles, gadgets, tools, and equipment, that provide an interesting contrast to the comparatively rustic wooden barn setting.
What is your favourite game or a game you’re currently playing?? “Can’t pick one. I really enjoy the Soulsborne and Sekiro games for their art style a n d g a m e p l a y, I l o v e t h e a t m o s p h e r e f r o m t h e D e u s E x s e r i e s . ”
When designing this project, the main intent was to create a scene that would showcase my technical skills and produce a highquality portfolio artefact. Beyond that intent, was the desire to create a work that would be genuinely appealing and interesting. To t h i s e n d , m a n y considerations were given to the various factors in making the product appealing, including not just the details themselves, but the visual synergy a n d v i s u a l d e n s i t y. Designing this project holistically is the main difference between this work and my others, and it makes a large difference to the final q u a l i t y.
I t h a s b e e n my g o a l t o w o r k i n t h e g a m e s i n d u s t r y a s a 3 D a r t i s t for years, this project was created with that goal in mind a n d a d h e r e s t o t h e p r o d u c t i o n s t a n d a r d s o f t h e i n d u s t r y. What has been your favourite part of studying at PCA? “ The atmosphere and facilities have been excellent to use. Although I have everything I need at home to work, I never found the facilities at the College lacking. It was also a nice place to work, the staff are friendly and helpful. I also enjoy the independence in choosing what I make in almost every module.” What hobbies do you do outside of uni? “I cook, watch videos (50% of them about cooking), play games, and watch films and T V shows. During my free time, I’m always looking for ways to improve my practice.”
