28/29/30 SEPTEMBER 2018

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

WELCOME!

ii

Walk down Armada Way & you might encounter a small dingy moving through the streets, broadcasting stories. For The Long Way (p.1), local performers will join commissioned artists Go Happen to tell the tale of Frenchman Bernard Moitessier, who set sail from Plymouth 50 years ago to circumnavigate the world, taking his journey as a starting point they are also working with local people to record accounts of departure, expedition & turning points in their lives.

Plymouth Art Weekender creates a moment for the city’s artists & artist led organisations to be visible simultaneously, sharing an equal platform with larger organisations & institutions. Year on year they dream up exciting ways to showcase their practices, creating opportunities for the Weekender’s visitors to try new skills, whilst being exposed to new ideas & ways of working. With more local & regional artists than ever taking part, alongside others from around the world, it’s interesting to see the subjects they are tackling & what’s inspiring them to make work in 2018. It seems that whether you are an artist working in Plymouth or internationally, ideas around landscape, environment & the complex relationship we have with our surroundings are becoming more and more pressing. It’s in this climate that Visual Arts Plymouth have shifted the focus of the annual commissions, choosing to support & celebrate Plymouth & regionally based artists across three commissions that explore local history & local community weaving together stories of land, sea, adventure & identity

Co-commissioned by Visual Arts Plymouth & The Box, Bridgette Ashton has been delving into the history of Plymouth’s prehistoric Cattedown Bone Cave. Be sure to book a place on one of Bridgette’s clandestine minibus excursions (p.20) to the secret site of the cave for a rambling tour of its unsettled history, & look out for sculpture, information boards & drawings by The Athenaeum Art Society in & around the building where the bones were first displayed after their discovery in 1886. There are two chances to experience Laura Denning’s work Hydrosapien (p.19), a performance by a temporary sign language choir formed from the local D/deaf community & two voice artists. On Friday evening, the choir will perform as part of The Atlantic Project’s launch event at the Guildhall & then on Saturday they will reassemble on the waterfront at Commercial Wharf to perform Laura’s specially adapted text about the fundamental relationship between water and humankind. The commissions are just the tip of the iceberg, with well over 100 events, workshops, exhibitions & talks spread out across the city in established arts venues & more unusual sites. If you’re unsure what you’d like to see or do, then Armada Way is a great place to start. We’ll have a Weekender information station there in the form of The Shed On Wheels

at Place De Brest (p.3) between 10.00 - 18.00 on Saturday. Alternatively head to The Athenaeum (p. 22) each morning between 10.00 - 12.00 for coffee & cake with some of Visual Arts Plymouth’s Activators. As well as providing information about The Weekender, they’re a great resource if you’re feeling inspired & want to find out more about getting involved with Plymouth’s art scene. As you navigate through the Weekender, please bear in mind that this is an open platform, which means the artists are in charge, they set the tone, they’re the ones who’ll welcome you into buildings, lead the workshops & start the party. Like with any programme of this scale, things shift & change, we’ll keep plymouthartweekender.com as up to date as possible, but individual artists may sometimes have to pull out or change things right at the last moment - so if there’s something you particularly want to see or do, use the project weblinks to make contact & stay tuned to the Weekender’s twitter account where we’ll shout about any changes over the course of the weekend. We think there’s no better place to encounter such an abundance of art, so come along, explore & see where your Weekender experience might take you!
