e1ne ones Editor-in-Chief Welcome to our November Luxe Issue!

The month of October seems to have flown by faster than any other for us. It brought great events in the plus size industry, news and one of the most successful issues for PLUS Model Magazine. PMM consistently receives well over 1 million unique page views per issue. Our body issue was extremely well received and we want to thank you, our readers for supporting us and helping to make us who we are today. We say that we want better clothing and more fashion options, but once some of us see the prices on high-end pieces, we fuss about it. The truth of the matter is there is a market for everything from high-end brands to mass-produced clothing at lower prices. Plus size women come from diverse backgrounds and have various budgetary lives. In this issue, we are celebrating the designers and brands that reach for the stars and provide high-end fashion options for our curves. While mainstream fashion continues to take baby steps towards us, we are giving a curvy nod to those who embrace us. Our cover model, Katya, may be a newcomer to most of you, but this Russian bombshel l has been in front of the spotlight for many years. As one

of very few plus size women in Russia to be featured on television regularly, Katya was the voice of the plus size woman before heading to the Un ited States as a plus size model. In her in -depth interview, Katya speaks about her struggle with being too big for a modeling career in Russia and considered too sma ll by the community she wishes to embrace in the US. Fashion's Night Out was a blast, and it was especially nice for one lucky person. Lane Bryant and PLUS Model Magazine teamed up to give the winner a $500 gift certificate and a photo shoot! The lucky winner was blogger Netta P and we had an amazing time working with her. Netta is fun, plus positive and has such an amazing life story - check out her favorite looks from Lane Bryant. Earlier this month we announced some changes to our staff. Tu li n Reid is now our Creative Director, as well as our Executive Marketing Director. Tulin has been instrumenta l in bringing many successful changes to PLUS Model Magazine and we look forward to even more exciting t imes. Have an incredible month! Your appreciation for your body by an industry standard, man, woman or even your family. We are real women! Hugs! Madeline Jones

Welcome to November, and to PLUS Model Magazine's f irst ever LUX issue! We are so proud to bring you an issue that showcases luxury brands that cater to your curves, and all the best fabulous luxury accessories ! More than ever, plus size women have options, and high -end luxury brands are no exception. We are pass ionate about showcasing this upscale perspective of fashion, and putting these amazing brands in the limelight in our journey to show the positive side of plus, and change our nation's negative stereotype of plus size women. We are strong, confident, fash ionable women who work hard for our money and deserve the finer things in life! We are NOT low income, fast-food junkies who do not take care of themselves or take pride in how they look. We are fashionab le and creative women, and we want to express ourselves with fashion the same way as straight-size women.

Our weight is not our worth, and definitely does not determine how much money is in our bank accounts, so why wouldn't we have luxury clothing options? I search high and low for fashion forward plus size clothing, and if I find it and it f its well and speaks to my fash ion personality, I want it in my wardrobe, regard less of price! I hope this issue inspires you to celebrate all the luxury that the fall season of fash ion has to offer, and helps you kick off the holiday season by "thinking outside the fashion box" and treating yourself to something special! XOXO, Reah Norman

by Madeline Jones Imagine being at the height of your career and then moving to a new country and starting from the bottom? This is exactly what Katya experienced when she came to the United States. Born in Russia, she was not the little girl people believed would be a model, however, ever since a very early age, Katya knew she was destined for something great. Our interview with Katya is eye opening about how differently people see "plus size" in various parts of the world and speaks to us about being too quick to judge the smaller models.

MJ: Tell me a little about yourself? K : I'm from Russia and I've wanted t o be a model since I was 13 years old. I've been working in front of the camera for many years, always fight ing for a more diverse representation of women because in Russia I am consid ered very big . MJ: Is there a plus size modeling industry in Russ ia? K: A lthough there are many plus size women in Russia, plus size modeling is not popular at all and I did not have any representation. I would call clients who were selling plus size clothing and introduce myself as a plus size model and ask them to give me a try. Some of them did, and some of them did not like the idea at all .. MJ: Why did you decide to come to the United States? K: I remember researching the plus size modeling industry about three years ago and coming across PLUS Model Magazine and was amazed at what I was reading. I did not know too much English at the time so I began to learn English so I could read the magazine. Then I emailed the magazine and you responded and gave me such great advice. Three years later I was signed w ith Wilhelm ina. I will say it was not easy; I had to get a work visa and take a chance that the agency would sign me but in the end, my hard work paid off.

MJ: Has modeling been what you thought it would be, now that you are here?

K: To be honest. it has not been easy. I thought it would have been a little easier because I did not know how much competition and how many models there are in the US all looking for bookings. I had to start from the bottom, and in Russia I was already a model and I am already known there.

MJ: Yes, tell me about your television show in Russia? K: Well, it's something like a makeover show w ith four different women. When the show was being formed, I had already worked as a plus size model and found out about the show and I asked if I cou ld be one of the hosts because I represent plus size women in Russia. They gave me a chance and the show became a success. Women liked the fact they could see someone that looked more like them on television. We helped these women feel and look better about themselves without putting them down.

MJ: You mentioned something really interesting to me about the size issue when we were chatting earlier. Can you tel l me about this? K: Well in Russia, I'm a very big woman and when I came to the US, I was a size 16 and from all the running around and taking trains I came down to a full size 1 4. Here as a s ize 14, most castings are for a s ize 12 and

14, but women do not see me as a plus size woman and it's been so confusing since I'm such a proud plus size w oman. MJ: I know people could be really harsh when it comes to the smaller models being plus size . because in all rea lity you're a regular looking woman and don't read as a plus size model, or at least what plus size women wou ld think of as a "plus size" model; but it's interesting to know how muc h passion you have for the industry and the pressure you have carried in your homeland of Russia for being "bigger".

wil l go to numerous castings and not get chosen for the job, so you have to know yourself and not take it personally. Thank you Katya, you've been amazing to speak with and we wish you much continued success .

Now that you've read the basic job description of what being a model entails, you might be thinking to yourself, "OMG that sounds awesome! I could so do that". Well, now it's time for a realistic look at yourself to see if plus size modeling truly is where you belong. Many kids dream of playing basketball professionally. But having played it in t heir backyard since t hey were two years old doesn't mean they are going to get a contract with t he NBA. There are height requirements, game stats that come into play, whether you played in high school or college and what those game accomplishments were. Even then, you aren't guaranteed to get drafted. Only if you can offer t he game something valuable on top of the standard requirements, are you most likely to get that coveted contract. Welcome to the model ing world. It's real ly no d iff erent. If you are 5'1 1 and a size 14 you may th ink you have everythi ng you need in order to be a p lus model and t he industry is going to just open t he doors for you.

H ighly unlikely. You need to p r ove you r self as photogenic, fit and you must have something to offer the modeling world t hat it doesnt cu r rently have. Ther e is more to modeling tha n beauty and this industry needs more t han just a front per son. This may sound harsh, but fo r t hose of us w ho have lived and been judged by t his industry, this is the reality of it. If you are goi ng to t r y your ha nd at modeling, you will need to know exactly what you are up against and what is going to be expected of you. In my next sever a l a r ticles, I wil l outline exactly what you need to do f r om start to fi nish in o r der to get yourself ready to be presented to the industr y players that hold you r dreams in their ha nds.

By Tiffa11y Banks When did you decide to be a plus model? I first had an interest when I was around fifteen years old. Crystal Renn had a little interview in Teen Vogue with a picture of her wearing this zipper sweatshirt of some kind, head tipped casually to the side. I immediately fe lt a connection w ith her. I wore a similar sweater and posed, head tipped awkwardly to the side in my mirror. She looked like me. Well, she looked more like me then any model I'd ever seen. She had suffered through problems wit h her body image and was on her way to living a glamorous life; full of fashion and art. I could see myself being the blonde, small busted version of this fairytale. It would take getting approached by a scout in Boston and some following years of introspection and finding a balance to accept that the scary route, but the right route, was to pursue modeling as a career. If you could pick the perfect plus modeling campaign for yourself, who would you want to work for? Oooh, that's a hard one. ASOS Curve is the bomb, but I'd rather be the first fu ll-figured woman (other than his classic actresses) to be photographed by Juergen Teller for Marc Jacobs. I imagine I would look fabulous in an intense flash, holding extra-large bottles of perfume. And even though I think Lara Stone is the best Calvin Klein model, I'd love to be the androgynous and elegant sexpot.

Who are your favorite curvy role models? Oh, easy. #1. Crysta l Renn: That gir l gets such a bad wrap from some of the women in the plus size world, and I think a large part of it is unjustif ied. Just let her be who she is ! She paved the way for designers to see the plus size body as something to dress as beautifu lly as they do in a size four4, and for women to see themselves as deserving it and demanding it. And no one can say she doesn 't have skill. All the background videos of her posing are li ke watching a dancer f li rt with the lens. #2: M onica Vitti: A brilliant and seductive Italian actress. I've netflixed the hell out of her movies from the 1960s and 1970s. And for that matter, I'd say that curvy women should look to classic fi lm for role models. (Not like anyone's never adored Marilyn Monroe.) But many of Fellini's women were luscious beauties, and a lot of them had brains, which is a plus. The other day I watched the American surfer film, Gidget, and the bathing suits and party clothes were to die for! Hello curvy Malibu chic!

What are your dreams, desires, and goals as a plus model? I like winning. (Is that so bad?) And winning would mean becoming involved fu ll-time; working with fabulous, driven, and creative people, traveling around

All images by:

the world .... ; and paying off my student loans. I'd also ideally love to come full circle after 20 years of outstanding and boundary stretch ing work, and being a photog rap he r /creative director. That or have the money after years of model ing ser vice to go back to school and be a film lib rarian . My goals are malleable.

What can we look forward to you doing in the next year? I'm saving up to do some more testi ng, and I hope to start booking jobs on the East Coast and Eur ope as well. I just signed with Dorothy Combs in M ia mi, and with both Dorothy and LA Models helping me w ith my career, I'm sure my face will start showing up on your favorite designer's websites. I did a Levi 's Curve ID shoot and let's just say; I want more of that!

.. .,

Finish this sentence . The plus-size industry is: A fad. I don't mean that the focus on plus size women and their needs will go away, but that as it becomes more mainstream, there will be less of a divide and the "industry" will include all sizes and designs. Name your favorite store to shop for curvy clothes in your hometown. My hometown is Pemaqu id, Maine. loved living there, but I could only really fit into some vintage pieces and Old Navy (that was an hour drive away). Here in Los Angeles and Long Beach, I've found some great pieces at American Vintage, H&M, even Urban Outfitters. My goal once I start making a little extra money is to start a fashion and design

blog for women and act ually search out those curvy shops. I enjoy what I seen in other women's blogs; Nicolette Mason is sensat iona l), but I think I have a little somet hing ext ra, not out ther e yet to bring to the table.

Who was the Photographer(s) and Makeup Artist(s) for the photo(s)? My friend Sara Greco is a photog r apher/filmmaker in NYC and I did the makeup, and she mastered the shots. Lesley Pedrazza did my makeup and hair for her photos, and I loved having someone else doll me up. (She's so wonderful by the way! Lovely pe r sonality and a real eye!) I took the the leotard shot and did the makeup/hair. My hair is natura lly wavy and curls if I sleep with it wet, so it can be f un to play with.

I have embraced the attitude that I am who I am and accept my body fully and the ones who said that I am too big so I can not be pretty are the ones I push a side, I have no time or space in my life for toxic people who just degrade others for self satisfaction . I take every moment I can to reinforce my positive fee li ngs of myself and take images that are real and that I am proud of. I am 53 years old .

I celebrate my body by making a love list of things I love about my body. It really opens my eyes and makes me appreciate my uniqueness. I also love dancing and doing the Stairmaster to enhance my curves! Lastly, I am always thankful for what my body does for me, in and out. My body is beautiful!

Yve I celebrate my body because it is beautiful ! To maintain my figure, flexibility, and muscle tone ... l ta ke an adu lt gymnastics class on Saturday mornings and do at@ home pilates twice weekly to keep my s ize 18 body f it ready. My body is curvaceous ... beautifu l... and contains a happy soul and that's really why I love me and my body. Hey... I'M CURVY ... that's a celebration all in it self!
