letter from the editor madeline jones | editor-in-chief

I am not ashamed… ... The LOVE YOUR BODY Issue is always one of the most anticipated issues of the year for many reasons. While some women are just looking for imagery that will push the envelope, others are looking for information and validation that only other plus size women can provide them. In putting this issue together I threw caution to the wind and just went for it! Get ready to be wowed! There is so much happening in the industry right now, so we should all be very excited. Evans made history in the UK when they showed their SS’15 Collection on the runway during London Fashion Week. I was there to witness this exciting show and was a guest of the brand in London. Read my recap on our blog. We also attended the Lane Bryant Isabel Toledo event in NYC. The new fall 2014 collection is even more alluring than past collections and we had the opportunity to speak with Isabel Toledo one-on-one about her Latin roots, why she stopped showing during fashion week and much more! Earlier this year JMS (Just My Size) surveyed over 7,000 women and the findings were outstanding. Those findings fueled my desire to bring information, confidence and a very specific message to our readers. While some of society may deem us ‘unfit for fashion’, quality of life or true happiness, it is up to each and every one of us to find true validation and happiness. No career, industry or person

will ever be able to give that to you. YOU have the power within yourself to live your journey and the best possible life for yourself.

#plusmodelmag

When choosing a model for this issue, Fluvia Lacerda was the obvious choice; she’s not only a model, but an advocate for plus size women. She knows what it’s like to live as a plus size woman and struggle within an industry that is supposed to celebrate the plus size woman. Her interview is riveting, open and very honest. We hope that you are encouraged by all of our features and help encourage those in the industry who are working to support and create more opportunities for all plus size women.

plus-model-mag.com | oct 2014

In the plus size industry the word ‘plus’ has been under attack. Plus size models have been quoted as saying, “They do not want to be called plus size models”. On the one hand I understand, I would not want to be called something I’m not and with ‘plus size models’ now booking at a size 6 – 10, I can see why they would be upset. On the other hand I feel that successful models, who have been working in the industry and NOW do not want to be called ‘plus’, show a gross disrespect to the women who are buying the clothing off their back. Size 18, 24 and 32 women are buying the clothing, and we deserve to have models who work in our industry who are not ashamed of who they are being used to market to. Our industry is perpetuating the stigma we are fighting about being ‘plus size’.

inspiration + style

Once you garner that confidence, nurture it and surround yourself with positive people who will encourage you when you are down, being ‘plus size’ is not a curse! It’s not something we have to be ashamed of. It’s just a part of who you are. I’m a mother, wife, businesswoman and I happen to be plus size; I’m also many other things that help describe who I am, but I do not live in shame because of my size. I AM NOT ASHAMED!

Qu

uick Tips }

Essie Golden, creator of the Instagram movement #GoldenConfidence shares her top 10 tips for living with Confidence! 1. Less thinking, more doing. I don’t know about you, but I have a habit of over thinking outfits and situations. I end up talking myself out of great things. Does this look good? Am I sure I’m doing the right thing? Just do it! 2. Be comfortable. Being confident is about being comfortable in your skin. Confidence isn’t always about rocking the latest trends. It’s about owning who you are. 3. Have a bad day... not a bad week. It’s okay to wake up in a somber mood. It happens to everyone, we’re human. Just don’t turn a bad day into a bad week, month, or year. Feel it and move on. 4. Talk to yourself in the mirror. Sounds crazy? I know, but it really works! On a bad day look in the mirror and say something nice about yourself. One self-compliment leads to others, and can transform a bad day into a better one. 5. Have a “Kanye Day”. Kanye is known for his big ego and overly confident attitude. That’s not always a bad thing. Get all done up and have a night out on the town with your girls, or go to a special event. Every woman deserves to have fun dress-up days. Feel so good about yourself that no person on earth can tell you differently. 6. Security blanket. As children, many of us had a favorite teddy bear or blanket that made everything good in the world. Have a go-to confidence booster. On days when you feel fashion-lost, have a favorite lipstick, accessory or piece of clothing that you love to see yourself in. 7. Get dressed to music. Nothing is better than a song to turn a “just-getting-dressed” moment, into the ultimate fashion show/concert. A Beyonce or Katy Perry song, on full blast will, have you ready to take on the world with a smile on your face. 8. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Love your legs? Show them off. Curves for days? Wear a bodycon. Perfect hair? Do a hair flip. Whatever you feel is your strength, don’t be afraid to show it off. There is nothing wrong with accentuating the things you love most. 9. Take a selfie. It’s that simple. Everyone loves a good “selfie”. 10. Be nice to yourself. How often have you torn yourself apart picking at every single flaw? My hair sucks, my stomach is huge, my thighs touch. A night that was supposed to be a fun time out with friends, turns into an all-night, ice cream eating, self-hate fest. Stop doing that! When you find yourself having those thoughts, call a friend, or go to your favorite inspirational page. Do what you need to do in order to make yourself feel better.

PMM’s October “Love Your Body” issue is always so special because we get down to the heart of the matter and unapologetically celebrate the best part of the plus size fashion industry- a new, more inclusive perspective in fashion that represents women of all sizes and ethnicities. Every body is beautiful, and we are proud to celebrate that important message in this issue, and every issue of PMM!

So what does this mean for fashion? As I always say- how we dress every day is our personal form of expression, and it directly reflects how we feel on the inside, so naturally, our daily wardrobe says a lot about us. In this month’s issue, I challenge you to play up your confidence and use your wardrobe to showcase your best assets in my feature “Dare to Bare… Highlight Your Best Assets”. Also in this issue, our Shopping & Style editor, Alissa has highlighted “4 Ways to Update Your Work Wardrobe” and fashion contributor, Monique has taken us “Ahead of the Curve”, showcasing “Fall’s Best Lingerie Trends”. Also, our Beauty Editor, Tara has shared her picks for, “Perfect Scents for the Fall Transition”.

So, how do YOU love your body and practice self love? It is much easier to focus on the negative, rather than celebrating what we love about ourselves, physically. Embracing the skin you are in should be practiced and shared daily. No one is perfect and we all have our personal struggles- regardless of our size. Here are a few tips I have come to love and practice in my daily life, that help me stay on track with self love and acceptance: 1. Live in the present- today is your day, not 5, 10, 20 pounds from now 2. Stop the negative body talk- stay in a positive place with your thoughts and words. Be kind to yourself! 3. Don’t compare yourself to others- you are unique so find your own journey and measure of success 4. Surround Yourself with Positivity- be around people who lift you up and make you feel good

I have these tips posted on the corkboard next to my desk, and I reference them frequently. They help me stay in a positive place and remind me to honor myself above all. We only get ONE body, so we better treat it right!

Maybelline Falsies Mascara

If I were stuck on a desert island and only allowed one make-up product, this would be it. It gives a whole lot of volume to your lashes but without the dreaded clumping. Buy it! You’ll thank me for it.

jackie’s favs Nivea Essential Care Lip Balm

Because who doesn’t love soft, supple lips? I love this particular lip balm because it’s so thick. Also many other lip balms are absorbed too quickly, this one however stays in place for hours.

Redken Anti-Snap Leave-In Conditioner

Split ends? What split ends? All thanks to this little product, I rarely suffer from them. My hair is quite long so I constantly wear it in a top-knot, which makes the ends very dry and brittle. This product is a godsend for keeping the little irrits at bay. Maybelline Master Shape Brow Pencil Water and Sleep

I know it’s a cliché telling you all to drink more water and always aim to achieve 8 hours of sleep per night. But it honestly works wonders for your body and mind. I can definitely see in my face alone if I haven’t been getting enough sleep or drinking enough water.

I may not have brows as good as Cara Delevingne’s, but this product at least helps me try. Eyebrows are so important for the framing of your face. I usually get mine tinted, but I also use a brow pencil to add more definition. A monthly eyebrow wax is also an essential!

there are different types of curls, but are there any dos and don’ts that work for all kinds of curly? - Lola from Brooklyn, NY

Lola, there ARE some tips that you can follow regardless of your curl texture. Of course, in terms of products, it depends on your hair type. But when it comes to care, there are steadfast rules‌

1. When detangling, use fingers as a comb; curls come out more defined and it prevents damage. 2. Before drying (air drying or blow drying), apply product to wet hair in sections. 3. If need be, pat or press with a terrycloth towel, paper towel or t-shirt.

4. Air-drying is the healthiest way to dry hair, but if you are strapped for time, use a blow dryer with a diffuser on low; helps keep curls frizz-free. 5. Always remember to trim hair at least 2-3 times a year while DRY. Wet curly hair has a different shape and the coils may dry at different lengths. So it’s important to dry it the way it is styled and then shape it by cutting it coil by coil. 6. Never brush or comb dry hair‌or wet hair for that matter. 7. Use products that add moisture. Curly hair is dryer than straight hair. 8. At night, wear a silk scarf or use a silk pillow to protect your curls from breakage and frizz.

How long have you been blogging? I launched my blog in January 2013, after much encouragement from strangers, friends and a growing Instagram audience. I’ve always had a natural interest in fashion. After college, I wanted to pursue a career in fashion merchandising. I never really thought about blogging. This venture has probably been the most organic thing that has ever come to fruition in my life. Where do you love to shop? I literally shop everywhere! My go-to places won’t shock anyone, I’m sure. ASOS for anything and everything. Forever 21 for more trend fix. Eloquii for my classy/edgy pieces. Nordstrom Rack for my shoes. Neiman’s for window-shopping and the occasional luxury splurge. How would you describe your fashion aesthetic? I don’t think that I have a particular style. I wear what I like and that changes from time-to-time. I often consider myself to be a fashion chameleon. Most days I’m a Classic Feminine Girl. Other days I’m a Trendy-Girl and the next, Sultry Chic -- but always cute (I hope). I love a good dress, a tailored blazer, and a great heel. Where do you obtain your fashion inspiration? Almost from everywhere! I get lots of inspiration from other fashion bloggers and the street-style that I see online. There are so many fashionistas out there. What advice do you have for budding fashion bloggers? Just go for it! I didn’t have a “Mission Statement” or a 5 year plan when I started, I just wanted to share. Also, know who you are and don’t try to be something that you are not! Sometimes we tend to base our next move by comparing ourselves to others. People follow you because they want to see YOU and get inspired.

The models were women from diverse backgrounds, who conveyed the message of curvy confidence. However, somewhere between my website and social media, things went left. The photo went viral and all hell broke loose. While the photo empowered many

women (as it was intended to do), the women in the photo became victims of body shaming. Even celebrities like Michael Blackston and Snoop Dogg shared the picture and made fun of the five fabulous women. Each time the photo was shared, it seemed as though the comments got worse, and to add insult to injury, even other curvy women were attacking the women. For the life of me, I just can’t understand how people who are not perfect in any manner can find it in themselves to tear down another person based on what they think are imperfections. Reading the comments really

made me sad because ever since the original image went live to today, I have received emails from so many women saying, “Seeing those women helped build my confidence.”

many, ignorance and hate crept in and was attempting to take over. Even some of the women in the picture, who had been so proud to be a part of the project, began to exhibit signs of discomfort, embarrassment and regret. During a conversation with one of the ladies, I told her, “Love is the most powerful thing in the world, even in the face of your greatest adversity; love has the power to see you thru.” It was at that moment that I realized, this situation was filled with purpose. Instead of addressing all of the small issues, I decided to write a short letter directly to the main sources.

Dear Hate and Ignorance, The nerve of you to think that in your presence, love would be defeated. Yes, you are two powerful monsters that can effortlessly demolish the weak and many times infringe upon the strong. However with all of your might, you will never be able to evoke the power that love produces. Since I know you so well, I am unbothered by your antics but I am disappointed. I am disappointed by those who allow you to use them as a vessel instead of seeing you for what you are and making you vanish. The malicious body shaming and division among women created the illusion that you finally had love on the ropes. However the fact is, it was just an illusion and love remains undefeated. I know you may be wondering how is love victorious. Well, let me explain.

While you were body

shaming, love was empowering and educating, so in the midst of all that negativity, women were learning to love themselves. Many of them begin to connect and join forces in support of one another. While you thought that tearing those women down would destroy them, it made them stronger. You may have left scars but those scars now serve as a reminder that they are strong enough to defeat you. They now know that in the face of adversity, they can sit pretty with a smile because they have something that is greater than the two of you combined‌‌ LOVE!

Welcome to the 2014 Love Your Body issue. We hope your year has been well and the remaining months of the year will be blessed also! October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One of the greatest and silent epidemics, idomestic violence, is an increasing issue affecting more than 12 million men and women annually. This issue is more than a trending topic receiving worldwide attention for celebrities and athletes, but an issue plaguing the community for eons. Join us as we address domestic violence and call upon you (our readers, our families) to become involved in breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Domestic Violence is the willful intimidation, sexual assault, physical assault, battery, and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by a partner against another. The abusive behavior may be directed at intimate partners, children, siblings, or elders and affects individuals of every walk of life regardless of social class, age, gender, race, or educational

background. It is estimated 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence at least once in her lifetime. It is also estimated that approximately 15% of intimate partner/domestic violence has been reported by men. Types of Domestic Violence · Economic: Making or attempting to make the victim financially dependent by controlling financial resources including the victims earned income, withholding money or access to money, forbidding attendance at school, requiring accountability and justification for all monies spent, and withholding information about usage of bills which the victim is responsible for payment. · Emotional: Undermining or attempting to undermine victims’ sense of worth such as constant criticism, belittling victims’ abilities and competencies, manipulating victims’ feelings and emotions to induce guilt, subverting a partner’s relationship with children.

· Physical: (1) Inflicting and/or attempting to inflict physical injury such as shoving, slapping, hitting, biting, punching, shooting, etc. (2) Withholding access to resources necessary to maintain health such as medical care, wheelchair, foods and/or fluids, hygienic assistance, or sleep.

· Psychological: (1) Isolating or attempting to isolate victim from friends, family, school, and/or work such as withholding access to phone and transportation, undermining victims personal relationships, incessant checking up on, forced imprisonment. (2) Instilling or attempting to instill fear such as intimidation, blackmail, harassment, destruction of pets or property, and threatening physical harm to self, victim, and others. · Sexual: (1) Coercing or attempting to coerce any sexual contact without consent such as marital rape, forced prostitution, forced sex with others, forced sex after physical beating. “Revenge Porn has been added to this category as well. (2) Attempting to undermine the victims’ sexuality such as accusations of infidelity, withholding sex, criticizing sexual performance and desirability. Alarming Facts: • On average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner within the US. • In 2010, 1095 women and 241 men were murdered by an intimate partner. • 40%-60% of men who abuse women also abuse children. • Nearly 3 in 10 women within the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner and reported impact to their functioning. 1 in 10 men reported the same thing. • Women between 20-24 years of age are at greatest risk of experiencing non-fatal intimate partner violence. Illusion Versus Truth Anyone can become a victim of domestic violence as it takes many forms. Psychologists and researchers believe there are two emotional dynamics, which contribute greatly to domestic violence. (1) The destructive thought process of the abuser, which leads him/ her to believe they are insufficient without exhibiting control over another person. (2) The illusion of connection between the couple/partners called the “Fantasy Bond”. This is where the person being abused believes their abuser completes them and is therefore responsible for their individual happiness. The evidence of self-love is over shadowed by a need to control others by the abuser and a need to find outer forms of approval for the victim.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Spawned from the first Day of Unity observed by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in October 1981. The goal of this day was to connect battered women advocates with likeminded individuals working to end violence against women and children. This day soon became a week full of local, state, and national events and 6 years later, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. Shortly thereafter, the first ever toll-free national hotline was established. How We Can Prevent Domestic Violence: • Engage men and women in violence prevention strategies at an early age • Promote healthy relationships and communication skills • Increase awareness and encourage bystander intervention •Learn the warning signs and risk factors for hurting a partner such as o Being violent or aggressive in the past o Being a victim or witnessing violence as a child o Usage of excessive alcohol and drugs o Multiple life changes which causes stress How You Can Help: This global public health epidemic kills more spirits than have ever been reported. Be a voice for a woman who is afraid to…or unable to speak just yet. On the local level, support programs in the area, which are a resource to individuals affected by domestic/ intimate partner violence. On a national level, support programs and initiatives which increase awareness. Join the NCADV on the first Monday of October as they observe the Day of Unity in honor of lives lost, celebrate survivors, and connect with others working to end domestic violence. From Survivors to Women in Abusive Relationships Always remember: • You are Not Alone. Help is Available. This is Not Your Fault. Start a Conversation That Matters • The National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) • The National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-4673 • The National Teen Dating Abuse Hotline: 1-866-331-9474 • Check in with Family and Friends Regularly Call the Police • If you feel you are in danger, and have access to a phone, you can call 911 or the local authorities

o Report to the police everything which happened o Show any bruises and report the about of times you were hit o The police report may assist you in obtaining a Personal Protection Order Seek Help from Family • Inform them of what has happened Find a Safe Place • There are resources and organizations available, which will assist you in privately relocating or finding shelter until you are able to permanently move.

@devinmdavis_ Are people really hiring models size 26 and up?

The truth is that models past a size 22 are not used by main stream plus size brands. It’s a pretty big deal when they use a size 16 , it’s a shame that brands do not exercise more diversity when choosing models. There are other opportunities for aspiring models who wear a size 22 and larger: local designers, brands, fashion shows and real women fashion features often are more open to working with actual plus size models. Many of you asked: How do I get started in the industry? The first thing you need to do is decide what type of modeling you are best suited for. Print and Showroom: Plus size print models should be at least 5’9 and size 12 - 16. You must have clear skin with limited tattoos and piercings.

Photography: Lesley Pedraza, LesleyPedraza.com Model: Tinder Badhesha, IPMMODELS.com

Fit: Fit models are live mannequins. They meet with designers who design plus size clothing around their body. Most fit models are size 18, some companies use various size fit models anywhere between a size 14 and 26. Height can also vary but most fit models are at least 5’8. There is a specific measurement requirement as well so it’s best to get in touch with fit agencies in your area. @no.predecessor_ What’s the best way to not only break out of being shy and placing myself in the business, but also what’s the best way to handle criticism from agencies and models in the industry?

I wish there was an easy answer for this. The truth is that we are ALL open to criticism from anyone. The key to handling criticism is to not expect validation from anyone else. We need to find love within and surround ourselves with people who love who we truly are. If you are shy, you will have to practice being around people and trying to break out of your shell. Being shy could hurt your career as a model, many clients are looking for beauty and a great personality on set. The modeling industry is not the place to gain self esteem, the industry is about looks and measurements. You can lose a job over the size of your head or the shape of your chin. So

there is no way to stop the criticism from coming, it’s part of the modeling industry, but it’s how you handle it that will determine how far you will go. @desireejenkins_ What should be your day rate/half day rate starting out as a plus model?

If you are not represented by an agency, know that you will be

how to model you can begin setting your rates. Smaller indie designer rates will be low, it can be anything between $250 to $500 a day. If you are lucky enough to book a big client, rates are much higher, $1500 to $2500 a day. @yannabear_ Are there any agencies that hire plus models that are 5’3?

Right now we are not aware of any agencies who hire petite plus size models. I would look for commercial agencies in your area or in your nearest big city. @simplyshicbtq_ I have a 14 year old daughter that wants to get into plus size modeling because she is very shapely, where do we start?

If you get positive feedback, they will send you a list of photographers who they prefer their models to work with. Once they see the images, they may or may not offer a contract. It depends on how your daughter photographs. If they feel she is not ready they may add her to a development board and help get her ready for clients.
