SUMMIT

Forest tree planting season is now in full swing! Are you .now planting or have you made plans to plant trees on your idle acres? Old farm fields, logged over areas, stump pasture and fern patches that are not a producing part of your land can now be planted with most of the cost paid by the Federal Government. In addition to the ·above, for the first time several tree plantc ing machines are being made available to the land-owners of Western Washington by the Washington State College. This will enable you to plant several thousand trees per day instead of several hundred hy hand. There is a small maintenance charge of $2.00 per 1000 trees planted. The machine will be transported free of charge to your property by the farm forester, who will also show you how to operate it. For details contact Loren Curry, Farm Forester, in Room 201, Tribune Office Building, 106% West Meeker avenue, Puyallup, or phone TH 5-5533.

Sunday evening, Dec. 22, the z:ornLintad groups of the Surn1nit Mdhodist church are holJi.ng a Christmas carol service, starting at 5:30 o'clock. There will be c:inging of the familiar carols aud the Christmas story will be tolcl by the adult and junior choirs. After the service the Methodist Youth Fellowship will serve refreshments in the church hall. The regular church services are at 11:00 a.m., the Sunday school nt 9:45. Lucky Cloveir The Lucky ClovcT 4-II group held a Christmas party Dec. 12 at the home of their learler, Mrs. Richard Rave, on Ponnsylvania a venue. Christmns carols v.rere sung, followed by a gift exchange, games and refreshments. PJans \vere made for next year's project. Report.er, Susan Pruitt. Airplane Notes Mark Hoskins, Bill Scott of Canyon Road near 103rd and John and Ch.uck Crawford have bought John ~Post's plane, the Bellanca. and flew it to Chehalis during the past week visiting Bill's parents. Fine weather put ns many planes in the air as cars on the highway (or so it seemed Dec. 8 at the Thun Field on Merid ian road). If you are giving you son a gun for Christmas, don't just hand it to him with the simple admonitjon jjbe careful," -\varn the editors of Changing Times, the Kiplinger Magazine. You should see that he gets adequate instruction and that he uses the gun only under t.he supervision oT an expedienced adult. Competent instruction is widely available today through rifle clubs, many of which are in high schools nad junior highs. Membership in such a club solves the problem of where a boy may do his shooting after he has learned how. In addition to this basic instruction, there are five safety rules which your son should learn by heart for his future well-being: 1. Treat every gun as if it were loaded. 2 Keep the muzzle poinnted in a safe direction-away from everyone, including yourself. :~. Be sure of your target. 4. Be sure of your backstop. Backstops have one purpose-to stop the bullet Continued firing ~'"nay "\Vear son1e a\vay. 5. Know yom· gun and ammunition Only a clean gun in good condition is safe. And make sure your ammunition is the right kind for the gun you are using.

Making no sound or trail, the object sliced across the .heavens from south to north. Hoag related, adding that it covered a 90-degree arc in the sky within about 15 seconds. It crossed over Santa Barbara as the large jet plane crossed over Carpinteria. Both were very high.

'I'he two· witnesses were returning from ·Bakersfield and were over Pasadena at an altitude of .4,000 feet, when th!'!y sighted three cir<'ular aircraft flying near the mountains. Both men saw the object~ nearly simultaneously, and both noted that they were a. brilliant orange color and the lead aircraft had a white circle painted .in the middle. "I immediately threw our plane, a Cessna 180, into a tight circle to keep the three craft in our windshield," said the pilot, "while my partner tried to take our aerial camera out of its mounts but was prevented by the centrifugal force exerted by our tight turn. "The three craft made a complete circle around us at distance of four or five miles, covering the distance in 30 seconds to complete a fuI! circle .at a distance of four or five miles. The two men are co-owners of an aerial photo company and have. been flying together for three years. He said his cameraman ·has spent years in the air taking pietures, and during the war for the RAF. Those highly spirited high schoolers that you've been seeing the pas L fow days on the streets of Parkland are no doubt members of the Franklin Pierce student body. There's been a terrific surge of enthusiasm at llOth and Portland Avenue since the basketball season has started. Coach Del Schafer and bis hustling bnnd of Cardinnls are off to a running start thls year in both non-league and conference encounters. Just how long the Cardinals will stay in their lofty pe1·r.h atop the Puget Sound League standings remains to be seen. But the pep rooters. at FP don't seem to care about worrying about the future; they're just interested in the present. Thus far Schafer's crew has defeated Stadium 49-45, Clover Park 59-,38, Puyallup 35,30 and were about to play Lincoln as this column went to press. A 1613 overtime win over Auburn in the Puget Sound League Jamboree was sandwiched in between the Stadium and Clover Park outings. Stadium and Clover Park finished one-two in the Tacoma Athletic Commission's Hoop-GoRound, byt the way. What's behind the Cardinal upsurge? Hustle and heighth. The Cards have displayed an indominable spirit to win. Promising sophomores are making the old timers stir with vigor as the competition for s.tarting berths is keen; .Guard is a good example where Schafer has four or five men !'Ontinually vying for starting assignments. The heighth factor should not lead everyone to believe that FP

Bob Meade, exper!~.l),$e~f.~~.':1~ .... ior,' brings a steadying influence on the squad from his ;guard post and is particularly tough on defense. Ricky Smidt's 16 points against the Warriors demonstrated that· he can be deadly from out front. Fellows like Forwards Ken Southall and Jim Toburcn, reserve center Gary Gehrm11n and Guards. The Clover Park game was a. good example of what the front trio can do. Peterson had 14 rebounds and Moo;e and Carlson had 10 each for a total of 34 of the 50 picked off by the Red and White all night.

Riding along in first place, the Franklin Pierce Cardinals will be out for their third. straight league win in Puget Sound play Frida.y. The Cards meet the hfghly rated Sumner Spartans in the FP gym at 8:15 p.m. Sumner, though dropping a 4835 decision to Enumclaw, have an experienced crew back from last year and are one of the favorites in the Puget Sound League.
