Saga

The beauty and grandeur of Norway, wit h her lofty mountains, deep blue fjords and wooded valleys, inspired such masters as Grieg, Kjerulf, Nordraak, Reissiger, Borg and many others to express themselves in music and song. They produced compositions of lasting beauty that rightfully belong am ong the fin est the world has known. Singing has been the heritage of the Norwegian people since the days of the Vikings. In towns, villages and farm lands singing societies were formed for young and old. It was in Norway that male chorus a capella singing developed and grew to the high level it maintains even down to the present day. Bringing with them their traditions and the characteristic love of song, the Norwegians in America forged and m ade strong the bond between those of Norwegian birth and tho se of Norwegian ancestry through music and fellowsh ip. To further the cultural and fraternal singing on the Pacific Coast, representatives of various choruses met in Seattle in 1902 and organized the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Association. The first Sangerfest was held in Everett, Washington in 1903. In the fall of 1938 Tom Kaarhus invited men from the Sons of Norway lodge in Eugene to meet in the apartment above his cabinet shop, in order to organize and rehearse a men' s chorus. The chorus grew and p racticed there until 1941 , when the outbreak of World War II sent many of the men into the armed services and others out of town to work. After the war, the men took up singing again, this time rotating from house to house, rehearsing wherever a piano was to be found. In 1953 when the Sonja lodge purchased its present day building, the Norsemen found a pe rmanent p lace in which to sing. In 1958, Howard Herbranson attended the Sangerfest in Everett, Washington at which time the Norsemen applied for m embership. in the P.C.N.S.A., and were accepted. In fact he was voted president of the Forbund and was "more or less" convinced to host the next Sangerfest. 1959, then , was the year of Eugene's first Sangerfest, which also coincided with the lOOth anniversary of the State of Oregon. Sangerfests were hosted here again in 1967 and 1976. This year brings the 74th Sangerfest, the fourth to be held in Eugene. We are also proud to note that two of the original charter members of the Norsemen, Jens Thorsen and Obert Andrews are still actively singing with the group.
