Brief Historical Sketch of the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers' Association

SONG AND MUSIC are a birthright which have been entrusted to all nations in a greater or lesser degree. That such a birthright has been richly entrusted to the Norwegian Nation is a well known fact. As music lovers, composers and performers the Norwegians have always been in the foremost ranks. Singing, and then in particular male chorus singing, has a very broad place in the dailv musical life of the country. Virtually every little community has its singing societies which contribute much towards keeping the high stand ard of patriotism and love. Everybody takes part and the great Sanger fests with massed choruses numbering 5000 to 6000 men are realities. Immortal composers like Grieg, Sinding, Svendsen, Ole Olsen, Kjerulf and numerous others have given us male chorus compositions of lasting beauty, compositions that rightfully belong among the finest the world has produced in this form of music. The Norwegian s~ns and daughters who have emigrated to America have brought with them this great love for song and music, and have contributed honorably to make this <tDuntry an outstanding musical nation. For over sixty years Norwegian singing societies have existed on the Pacific Coast, and in 1902, chiefly through the efforts of Mr. F. A. Tomte, Portland, Oregon, the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers' Associ ation was organized in Seattle, Washington. The first officers were John Norman (Everett), President; A. J. Thuland (Seattle), Secretary; Dr. O. A. Loe (Seattle), Treasurer, and Dr. Carlo A. Sperati, Director-in-Chief. The origi nal founders of the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Association are as follows : Norwegian Glee Club, Portland, Oregon, organized Nov ember 6, 1886; Normanna Male Chorus, Tacoma, Washington, organized October 15, 1888; Norwegian Male Chorus, Seattle, Washington, organ ized December 6, 1889; Norden Sangforening, Ballard, Washington, or ganized in 1901; Everett Norwegian Male Chorus, Everett, Washington, organized August 5, 1902; Norwegian Male Chorus, Vancouver, British Columbia, organized September 14, 1927. The first Sangerfest was held in Everett, Washington, August 1, 2 and 3, 1903. Since then Sangerfests have been held and celebrated in the principal cities of the Pacific Coast. The present Sangerfest in Vancouver is the 64th in the history of the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers' Association and the first in Van couver since 1957.

Vancouver, B.C.

Welcome Brother Singers and Friends On this great occasion, the 64th Sangerfest of the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers' Association, may we, on behalf of the Bellingham Male Chorus and the Norwegian Male Chorus of Vancouver, B.C., extend our heartiest welcome to you all. We sincerely hope your visit will be a very happy one, and that our Sangerfest will be the "best ever," both musically and festively. Those of you who were here in 1957 will no doubt find many changes, but be assured that the friendly, relaxed atmosphere has not changed. We are very proud of our Province and our City, it is beautiful even when it rains, which we hope it won't during our Sangerfest. In order to present this event, all of our committees have worked very hard. What should have taken a year, has been accomplished in just four months, with the help of our Swedish friends, the Bellingham Male Chorus and their supporters. If everything is not perfect, please forgive us. Have a good and "Happy" Sangerfest, take home many pleasant memories, and please, do come back and see us soon. "En ig og tro ti I Dovre faller." Syng deg sam men, Sanger skare, i et enig Tonevell! Innen spredt i atterfare, vii vi smelte Skjel i Skjel. Derfor til var Tonefest, Sangerflokk, vel mott som best! E. Grieg

PROGRAM NOTES

Now Let Every Tongue Adore Thee From the Cantata "Sleepers Awake." Midnattsolen A tribute to the Midnight Sun (a sight that must be seen to realize its beauty) - Man is thanking the Lord for the light. Klara Stjerna (Ser enad) A song to the shining star that glimmers in the heavens. The Lost Chord Written almost a hundred years ago, this piece of music is probably the most widely sung male chorus number in the world. Stridsbonn A Prayer - You, who has the world as your kingdom, hear the prayer that seeks thee. Vackra Sky A song about a lovely cloud, forever moving in the blue sky; where are you going, I ask, where are you going to find peace? Hjartats Saga The composer is telling us that every forest has its well, every meadow its flowers, and every heart its memories; yet the well dries out, the flowers wither, but the passage of time cannot destroy heart's memories. Naar Fjordene Blaaner This is probably the most popular song with Norwegian singers in the home~and as well as on the North American continent. The composer, Alfred Paulsen, was very active in Norwegian singing circles in Chicago a generation ago. The song reaches a solemn climax in the prayer, "God bless thee, dear Norway, my beloved land ." Hjemover fra Langreis Homeward bound from a long journey - a song of the sea. Norronakvad (Norronafolket) This is from the sagas time of the Vikings. Two brothers share the "throne," one is a restless warrior, the other, a wise, peace-loving ruler. The song pictures the glories of the Crusades, - "The Norse people will travel, they wj:jl bring strength to others." Kongekvadet This song, 1mmediately following the familiar Triumphal March, praises the royal brothers, who have now reconciled. Landkjenning (Land sighting) This is one of the most popular male chorus songs in the world. Because of intrigue and dissension, Olaf Trygvason, as a prince was forced to flee the country with his mother. The dramatic return to his native Norway is told in this song.
