We are seeing an increasing number of councils around the UK adopting vehicles powered by renewables and electricity, as the traditional petrol and diesel vehicles face pressure to be replaced. The expulsion of particulates and carbon dioxide from diesel-powered exhausts has been affecting not only the climate, but also resulting in significant air and noise pollution in residential areas. A special report into electric refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) by Eunomia found that local authority RCVs emit 330 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent per year – a significant amount of emissions that could be reduced by investing in more pollution-free vehicles on the streets.
