ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2016

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest is to ensure broad public access to reproductive health care through direct service, education, and advocacy. Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual’s income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. We believe that respect and value for diversity in all aspects of our organization are essential to well-being. We believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual’s right to privacy. We further believe that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life and strong family relationships.

DEAR FRIENDS,

In 1916, America’s very first birth control clinic opened in Brooklyn, offering basic information about family planning to a long line of visitors for a 10-cent fee. Police shut it down days later, arresting the women — the founders of Planned Parenthood — who dared to envision a world where their daughters, mothers, and sisters had the freedom to determine what path their lives would take. One hundred years later, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest is proudly making that vision a reality for thousands of people every day: transforming the health of communities, igniting a new groundswell of activists, and marching toward the day when reproductive health is acknowledged as a basic human right.

empowered consumers. By expanding the range of medical services we provide, building our power and scale in communities that need us, and intensifying our focus on the next wave of diverse change makers, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest is creating a region where justice and access to care don’t depend on who you are or where you live. Thanks to our supporters, we ended the 2016 fiscal year strong, unafraid, and united. The hopeful optimism we carry into tomorrow belongs to generations of courageous women and men who fought for the revolutionary idea that a woman should be able to determine the direction of her own destiny. It belongs to our resolute staff, our fearless providers, and our selfless volunteers. And, of course, it belongs to you. Thank you for standing with Planned Parenthood.

Last year showed us that nothing — partisan threats to strip us of funding, false accusations of improper activity, or even violence — will keep us from meeting the needs of the women and men who depend on our care. Not only has every outrageous claim against us been fully discredited, but we’re fighting to make sure the real criminals — those who would defraud, harass, and intimidate us — are held accountable. Today, our resolve to ensure that all people have the compassionate, high-quality care they deserve is as steady as ever. And we’re just getting started. This year, staff at our 18 health centers provided expert medical care to more than 137,000 unique patients during 277,000 patient visits. We also educated and gave information to nearly 64,000 people throughout San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties, delivering the critical care and knowledge that will enable them to lead healthy, meaningful lives. Our promise to fulfill this mission is unwavering. We’re committed to strategically advancing a culture and business model that drives equity, reflects the rapid evolution of medical care, and engages patients as

PINK OUT FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD

Thousands of people in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties and millions across the country came out in force on Pink Out Day, Sept. 19, 2015, to show Congress and the world that Planned Parenthood is an important health care provider and trusted sexual health educator. There were hundreds of events across the country, plus several in our three-county region — in addition to a massive social media push that garnered support from 7 million people on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The one-day event cascaded into a year-long celebration for Planned Parenthood, including Pink Out for Planned Parenthood (POPP!) — a fundraiser attended by nearly 200 young supporters.

CHULA VISTA: BIGGER CENTER, BETTER DESIGN

We redesigned and doubled the size of our Chula Vista Health Center, allowing us to see even more patients at one of our busiest health centers. The remodel is part of a long-term strategy to expand access to care in areas with great need. Our new and remodeled centers across San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties send a clear message to our patients that they are welcome, and are being cared for by experts in modern, efficient facilities.

RECORD-BREAKING DONATION ENSURES HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES

The Aqualia International Foundation pledged the largest single gift that our affiliate has ever received to provide high quality reproductive health care and educational resources to thousands of people in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties. This remarkable three-year pledge will make our communities healthier and better informed by expanding patient care services, providing accurate and ageappropriate information, empowering the next generation, and protecting health care access through legislative advocacy.

STRENGTHENING HEALTH CARE PARTNERSHIPS IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY

The bonds we are forging across Riverside County are stronger than ever. We are proud of our strategic partnerships with health care providers, elected officials, community-based organizations, and businesses that promote health throughout the region. For example, we participated in a task force led by the Riverside County Department of Health to improve the health of the community. In addition, our sexual and reproductive health educators developed a new partnership in eastern Riverside County with UC Riverside School of Medicine. Our educators taught residents how to present sexual and reproductive health education in middle schools. Thanks to this program, residents now have the tools they need to educate their patients throughout their careers, and the students have the information they need to lead healthier lives. 10

EXPANDING OUR SERVICES FOR WOMEN AND MEN

We started offering both women and men additional reproductive and sexual health care services this year. We now have the ability to offer a full range of sexual health services to men at all of our health centers. With Dr. Sierra Washington, our new medical director, in the lead, we now offer comprehensive gynecology services at two health centers in San Diego County. These services include diagnosis and management of most gynecologic conditions, which we previously referred to other providers, such as hysterectomies, surgery to correct pelvic floor disorders and treatment of fibroids. We plan to expand this program to Riverside County in 2017. Annual Report FY 2016 Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest

CELEBRATING IMPERIAL VALLEY HEALTH CENTER’S FIRST ANNIVERSARY

We successfully expanded access to reproductive and sexual health care to the women, men, and teens of Imperial Valley. Planned Parenthood provided care to more than 2,200 people in Imperial Valley in our first year including birth control, STI testing and treatment, lifesaving cancer screenings, emergency contraception, and abortions. The health care services and education we provide in this region are critical; there are not enough health care providers in Imperial County to meet community need. We look forward to improving the health and wellbeing of Imperial Valley families through our health care, education, and advocacy work.

LEGISLATIVE VICTORIES

California and the nation cemented laws this fiscal year that will help make the next generation the healthiest ever. During the 2015 legislative season, our state signed into law 21 Planned Parenthood priority bills, including a landmark comprehensive sex education law requiring students to receive sexual and reproductive health education in public schools that covers LGBTQ issues, abortion, and intimate partner violence, with curricula that is proven to create positive health outcomes for its students. Early in the 2016 legislative season, a statewide minimum wage law was also passed that will help improve the health and wellbeing of working women and families in California. At the national level, the Supreme Court gave abortion providers the biggest victory in a generation by striking down restrictive abortion laws in Texas. This precedent-setting decision may be used to challenge laws in other states that restrict abortion rights and endanger women’s health.

PREPARING TEENS FOR SUCCESS

Our health educators are providing more reproductive and sexual health education than ever. The California Department of Public Health awarded us grants for San Diego and Imperial counties that will fund evidence-based sex ed across these regions for the next three years. Outside of class, students can continue to learn with our educator-run SnapChat. This social media platform — wildly popular with teens — provides a safe and fun place to learn about sexual and reproductive health. Planned Parenthood Federation of America awarded our education team a national Digital Excellence Award for their innovative work.

12

BUILDING OUR YOUTH MOVEMENT

We’re preparing the next generation to take action to protect and expand access to reproductive health care and education rights, while giving them the tools to serve as advocates in their communities. At this year’s Capitol Day, hundreds of staff, volunteers, and youth supporters from all over California came together in Sacramento. After a lobbying and leadership development training, our activists descended upon the Capitol to voice their support for legislation that improves access to birth control, telehealth, safety, and privacy. This is just one of the many activities that our Generation Action chapters participate in. Generation Action chapters are activist groups on college campuses that educate and mobilize the student body on issues affecting sexual health and reproductive justice, connect students to local Planned Parenthood health centers, and serve as a pro-Planned Parenthood presence on campus.

CELEBRATING FEARLESS VOICES

Our 53rd anniversary dinner, Fearless Voices, chaired by Rosette Garcia and Dan Kisner, MD, on March 30, 2016, was a tremendous success and raised more than $1 million to support Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest’s programs and services. Guest speaker Carole Joffe, PhD, spoke of Planned Parenthood’s resilience in the face of ongoing attacks, and Willie J. Parker, MD, accepted the Fearless Voice award with a powerful speech about his calling to serve women in the South with compassionate abortion care.

PROUD. NO MATTER WHAT.

Planned Parenthood volunteers, staff, and supporters showed their Pride at several events in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties. At the 42nd annual San Diego Pride Parade, over 120 volunteers distributed 10,000 condoms, 500 dental dams, and countless high-fives while others held signs and danced their way through the crowd. Planned Parenthood is proud to be an advocate for the LGBTQ community. We share a fundamental belief that all people should have equal rights — including access to health care.

PALM SPRINGS REEL WOMEN’S MOVIE MARATHON

More than 150 Coachella Valley residents attended the second annual Reel Women’s Movie Marathon, held in Palm Springs on October 18, 2015. This inspiring day of films helped raise more than $20,000 for Planned Parenthood’s Breast Health Programs, and brought diverse films about women to the community.

STORIES OF CARE. NO MATTER WHAT.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America produced a series of videos showcasing the good work of our staff and the powerful stories of our patients. They kicked off the series with 12 videos featuring patients and staff from our Vista, Chula Vista, and Imperial Valley health centers. These videos have been viewed more than 800,000 times. They were distributed across the country as part of a bigger campaign to strengthen our brand online. View these videos at plannedparenthood.org/videos, and share them with your friends on social media!

CELEBRATING LOU TERRELL’S LEGACY

Family and friends of Lou Terrell gathered in City Heights to honor one of our most ardent supporters and to name the Lou Terrell Education & Training Room, located near our newly expanded health center. Lou was a staunch supporter of women’s rights and social justice, having been on our board in the early 1980s, then board chair from 1984 to 1986. He passed away in 2014. The room was furnished by donations made in his name, and it will be used for education and advocacy events. 14
