Plainville fourth and fifth grade students from Linden and Toffolon elementary schools participated in the 11th Annual Marine Science Day, sponsored by The Connecticut Association of Schools, Project Oceanology, and the Connecticut River Museum. Students from across the state gathered to explore the unique and ecologically-rich environments of the Connecticut River. While at the Connecticut River Museum, Plainville students teamed up to clean polluted water by collecting garbage, absorbing oils and diluting toxins in the water; took a boat ride on the Connecticut River to observe cormorants, osprey and bald eagles and tested the depth and clarity of the water at various points on the dock.

Ashlyn Bush, 20, halted her education in April 2013 after having trouble with online courses at PHS. Of course, June 11 was a proud day for her. “Anyone can go to high school and graduate,” Bush said, “but it takes a special

Adult Continuing Education Coordinator Jill O’Brien said Liberty Bank has sponsored these $2,000 scholarships for three years. Petrucci’s message to others: “You can accomplish anything you put your mind to.” According to Petrucci’s mother, Deborah, wanting more out of life, her daughter navigated various ups and downs while working two part-time jobs.

Petrucci indicated that she has a great support system. G rad u ate s wh o we n t above and beyond were honored June 11. Nikhom Chaleunphone received the Commitment to Education award, Michael Bouchard was awarded the Academic Achievement and Most Improved Scholar Award, and Bing Zhang was named 2014 Adult Education Scholar. She has got involved in everything.” Zhang pointed out that, in China, when it comes to the media, “there are restrictions on how you can criticize government.” Keynote speaker Jane Wilson congratulated the students on what they have accomplished, telling them they are now prepared to build a happier life. “Wilson is an ex-middle school teacher for Plainville,” O’Brien said. “She does workshops in home economics, interview etiquette, healthy cooking, and consultant work on home management skills.” Wilson reminded the graduates to always remember to

THESE GUYS ROCK

Opinion Letters to the editor Grateful to officer To the editor: I was involved in a car accident May 15. I was hit from behind and my car was totaled. The only good thing about that night was the policeman who came to the scene. His name is Mark Kominske. Officer Kominske was professional, considerate and caring. He saw how upset I was and took the time to calm me down while proceeding with the investigation. Police officers seldom get enough credit for the good things they do. Plainville residents should be proud of their men in blue. I know I am. Susan Abram Plainville

UP, UP AND AWAY

Three Plainville High School students were honored at the school’s spring Students Rock Award ceremony. Award winners are nominated each semester by high school staff, and are ultimately recognized for “doing the right thing” every day. This is primarily an award for students who show cognitive awareness of the school’s mission statement through their behavior. Students who assume responsibility for their behavior, contribute to the school and community, and appreciate the benefits of a physically, emotionally, and socially healthy lifestyle. Students at Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School recently surpassed their school year reading challenge goal: 18,000 books by the end of May. School Library Information teacher Joyce Goldberg planned a special celebration in honor of reaching the goal. On June 4, students, staff, parents and guests gathered for the event entitled, “Up, Up, and Away with BOOKS,” which included a special dance number performed by 35 Wheeler students as well as a tethered hot air balloon ride for four lucky students randomly selected from those who handed in reading slips at Wheeler for the year. | (Submitted by Lynn Davis)

On April 26, teams from 28 countries with more than 10,000 participants converged on the Walt Disney World Resort – ESPN Wide World of Sports Convention Center to take part in the 11th Annual World Championship of All Star Cheerleading. These athletes represented top programs that qualified for the Worlds at one of more than 65 bid-giving events internationally. In order to be eligible for a paid bid to the championship event, participating teams from all over the country had to qualify at a regional level.

ECE (East Celebrity Elite) from Waterford and the Wildcats from Naugatuck both received these special bids at regionals, ECE at Ocean City, Md. and the Wildcats in Washington, D.C. ECE included three young ladies from Plainville High School: Lauren Acey, Lauren Lederman and Isabella Donahue. The Wildcats team had one young lady from PHS, Therian May. The three-day event was a culmination of a full season of training, practicing and perfecting these creative innovative routines. USA Wildcats Small Coed

Senior Shea Echols and juniors Quentin Lux and Omar Abdelsame participated in the outdoor track and field State Open meet, held June 9 at Middletown High School in Middletown. While none of Plainville’s representatives placed high enough to record points, the quick individuals showed what the Blue Devils have to offer on the oval. Echols, who qualified for the event in both the 100 and 200 meter dash, put up impressive individual times in both events. The senior ran a 13.01 in the 100 and finished in 16th place. Although it wasn’t quite

fast enough to qualify for the final heat, Echols’ time was better than her original seeding time (13.25), one of only four individuals to make that improvement during the race. In the 200, Echols finished 21st with a final time of 26.70. Although more than a second behind the winning time (25.49), the senior wasn’t far off from a top 10 finish (0.62 seconds out of 10th). Lux qualified and competed in the 800, finishing 16th place with a final time of 2:01.53. The junior finished eight seconds out of first place (1:53.61). Abdelsame ran in the 3200, completing the race

CATS FOR ADOPTION My name is Gabby and I have a step sister, Isabelle. I am 10 years old, overweight, but I am in good health and I go to the vet every year. I love boxes and I love to watch water being poured in a bowl. I hope to be adopted with my step sister, but, I don’t have too. My step sister Isabelle is 7 years old and in good health and a little more needy than me. We are not used to people and definitely would not get along with others. My owner has been very good to us, but, he has to move soon and we can’t go with him! He feels really bad and just wants to find a good home where we can be happy. Pictures are available. Good home only. Paul 860-471-3496 email: pchester516@comcast. net
