Head Coach

Matt Viator

In three seasons, Matt Viator has become

one of the most successful coaches in the NCAA’s FCS division. He has guided the Cowboys to a Southland Conference football championship and into the NCAA Division I championship in two of his three years as head coach at McNeese State. His 2007 team posted only the fourth undefeated, untied regular season record in the university’s history, won the league title for a second year and participated in the NCAA FCS championship for a second straight year. Viator had taken over the head job four games deep into the 2006 season, went 6-2 the rest of the way, won the SLC title and put his team into the NCAA FCS championship. His coaching record is an outstanding 24-7 and his teams have lost only three regular season games. In conference competition only, his teams have a 16-4 mark. Viator has earned numerous coaching honors including two straight SLC coach of the year awards and a Louisiana collegiate coach of the year award. He has also been a finalist for the national Eddie Robinson award twice. He claimed his first collegiate coaching victory in his very first game as head coach when the Cowboys posted a 30-27 win over Southern Utah. Viator is the 14th head coach in McNeese history, Viator was 6-2 in his first season and 5-1 in league play, winning the final five league games of the year. Prior to his becoming head coach, Viator, who is a graduate of McNeese, had served the university as offensive coordinator and is regarded as one of the top Division I offensive minds.

Matt Viator has won two Southland Conference titles and been named the league’s coach of the year twice in his three seasons as head coach of the Cowboys. He has also been a finalist in the balloting for the national Eddie Robinson coaching award twice. Viator’s record as head coach Year W L Pct. His offenses have led the league in scoring five times and in 2007 set school records for both per game total offense and scoring. Before he joined the Cowboys, Viator was one of the top prep coaches in Louisiana, producing an 81-37 won-lost record, winning one state crown and five league titles. He joined McNeese in 1999 as linebacker coach and was made offensive coordinator in 2000, the Cowboys leading the league in both scoring offense and total offense that year.

McNeese State 2009 Spring Game McNeese State put together one of its most entertaining spring football games in recent years here Wednesday with the Blue scoring in the last eight seconds of play for a 28-22 victory over the Gold. Tailback Todd Pendland raced in from 21 yards for the winning score after the Gold team had taken a one point lead on a two point conversion with only 33 seconds left in the game. Thirty-six of the game’s 50 points were scored in the final 10 minutes of play. The game brought an end to the Cowboys spring workouts. A total of 722 yards were produced by the two teams in the 40 minute encounter (four 10 minute quarters were played). The Gold accounted for 380 yards (82 rushing and 298 passing) and the Blue for 342 yards (113 rushing and 229 passing). Pendland, the returning Southland Conference offensive player of the year, produced two touchdowns, he rushed for 65 yards and he caught five passes for 95 yards. His scores came on his game winning cruise of 21 yards and on a two yard run, both in the final two minutes of the game. Also for the Blue, Chad Davis tallied on a three yard end around and quarterback Beau Lasseigne connected with Bernardo Henry on a 49 yard td pass for the game’s first score. The Gold got touchdowns from Elrick Jones on a one yard run and from quarterback Derrick Fourroux and tight end Corday Clark on pass plays of 11 and 12 yards. After the second Fourroux-Clark td pass, Fourroux put his squad into the lead by converting a two point PAT run, this with only 33 seconds left on the clock. The Blue then got the winner on Pendland’s run. A 21 yard pass from Lasseigne to Pendland and a 17 yard run by Lasseigne set up the score. Offensive leaders for the Gold team were tailback Elrick Jones with 65 yards rushing and six pass receptions for 44 yards and Fourroux with 26 completions in 40 attempts for 298 yards. Clark had five catches for 77 yards and his two scores while Richard Conner had five catches for 76 yards. For the Blue, Lasseigne completed 17 of 28 passes for 229 yards and he also led his squad in rlushing with 65 yards on six carries. Tight end Wes Mangan caught four passes for 53 yards and wide receiver John LeDay four for 24 yards. There were no kickoffs or punts in the game. Defensive leaders for the Blue were linebacker Deron Minor with a total of 14 tackles, Seth Thomas with 10 tackles and Terrance Freeman with three quarterback sacks. Leading the Gold defense were Darrell Jenkins and Geremy Pilate with five tackles each. Brandon Robinson with the Blue team had the game’s only pass interception.
