Belize City, Belize - September 2nd, 2009 - Public bathrooms….a nice sensible pier….a public dock-tasteful and functional….a place to sit and meditate, to look across the water- a place that invites you. Ideas flowed at the Placencia Community Center on Wednesday 26th as the Sustainable Tourism Program, BTB, Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, and Placencia Village Council invited participation from the public to expand on the concept of a new Pier and Plaza for Placencia Point. Placencia Point was once a vital village center: a meeting place centered around the local fishing industry. It was this feeling of restoring the link between the fishing heritage and the community to stimulate economic opportunities for the village, improve quality of life for the residents and enhance Placencia as an overnight tourist destination which was the main thread of the dialogue among the stakeholders. The general consensus was that the village needs a public pier, and the community is inclined towards a development option which combines both a multi-purpose pier with a shoreline development in keeping with the traditional village setting. Quality consultation and engagement is a building block of good governance and will be an integral part of the planning process. Christy Mastry, Physical Planner for the program stresses that "the success of this project relies on the local community taking ownership and identifying with the development." This session was the first of many which will be held during the 36 month period until the pier is built. Project financing for the Pier to the tune of US$1.2 million is provided by the Government of Belize through an IDB loan of US$13.322 million with counterpart funding from the BTB, as part of the Sustainable Tourism Program. The Placencia Pier and Plaza falls within the physical development component which will focus on 4 main centers: San Ignacio, Belize City, San Pedro and Placencia. The overall Sustainable Tourism Program is a nationwide effort incorporating a mix of physical development, planning and capacity building to strengthen the tourism sector's contribution to the national economy by promoting tourism growth in a manner which is socially, environmentally and economically sustainable. Present at the meeting were Mr. Michael Singh CEO Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, Mr. Brian Yearwood Chairman of the Placencia Village Council, Mr. Gaspar Guerrero Chairman of the BTB Board of Directors, Mrs. Tracy Panton Director of Tourism BTB, the Project Team of the Sustainable Tourism Program and members of the Placencia Community.
