22 Shevat - 20 Adar I February 2016

Temple President Faith Segal I cannot believe that it is February already. El Niño has arrived and things are certainly busy at PJTC. The past several months have gone by fast. We have had a lot of change at PJTC recently, but change can be good and we are moving forward. Both our Rabbi Search Committee and Executive Director Search Committee are working hard to identify candidates for both positions and we are so fortunate to have all of these individuals working hard to help PJTC remain a strong, thriving community. Recently, after several years of hard work by many people, the congregation approved the new Bylaws of Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center. These bylaws will enable PJTC to operate effectively for many years to come. Part of these bylaws is a restructuring and reduction in size of the Board of Directors, and a strengthening of our committee structure. These changes will begin to be implemented with the work of our current Nominating Committee, chaired by Judy Callahan. On February 21, we will have a congregational meeting where we will vote to approve the slate for the Board of Directors for the upcoming year. We have just enjoyed a wonderful Shabbat Shirah concert. I would like to thank Cantor Ruth Berman Harris for once again presenting us with such a wonderful, moving, musical evening. I would also like to thank Sandy Hartford for all of her hard work in once again spearheading a very successful fundraiser for PJTC. In June, we will have our major

fundraiser of the year, which will be a Congregant of the Year event. I am happy to let you know that this year, the Congregant of the Year Committee has chosen to honor Phil and Judy Callahan for their many years of service and dedication to PJTC. We will be celebrating Phil and Judy on June 4 with a lovely evening of celebration and thanks for all they have done and continue to do for PJTC. I hope you all will attend and participate in this event. More details will be available soon. Our Adult Education Committee has planned a wonderful Scholar-inResidence program for the weekend of March 4–6. We will be hosting Rabbi Dvora Weisberg, who is the director of the Rabbinical School, HUC-JIR LA. She is also Associate Professor of Rabbinic Texts with a specialty in helping educators teach texts to lay people and to help us understand texts’ relevance in today’s world. She is a great teacher with a tremendous wealth of knowledge. It is sure to be a weekend of learning that you will not want to miss. Our youth have been busy as well the last few months. With programming ranging from religious school classes, USY and Kadima activities, such as a star-gazing party and Hanukkah sleepover, and a night of bowling and pizza, our youth are building relationships with each other and strengthening their ties to our community. In April, our USY will be hosting the USY Heschel Shabbaton at PJTC. This will be a full weekend of events that youth from all over our region will attend. Our
