President’s Column

by TM Dinesh ( President )

First I would like to Thank DGTCians for providing a great opportunity to assist members and Ex-com of DGTC. It was great coincidence that I took the charge in the same week when Donald Turmp sworn as President of America. I am very happy to share that DGTC has great leaders and their service & commitment towards Toastmasters is immeasurable. Celine Dion said " I'm not in competition with anybody but myself. My goal is to beat my last performance." DGTC sets an real example for this. Every year DTGC beats its previous record and sets a new milestone. I takes this opportunity to thank Previous Leaders & Excom of DGTC in shaping the club to a great height. Whether it is Club contest / picnic or election ,we stood as one team to support each other. Really proud to be part of a great team. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Opportunities and Experiences By TM Deepa Surendran ( Area director ) I always aspire to own my own start-up. But there’s always a catch, though. I always hesitate thinking that since I am employed, I can’t spend committed time for any other activity. So I worry about the money spent as capital to start the business may get wasted. Though my dream was exciting but was really scary.

Strategies to get the word out – use flyers, newspaper ads, social media and phone calls to let the community know about the new startup. Focus on what’s in it for everyone, publicize the benefits! Keep the news upbeat, positive, interactive and not too technical. 

Now as the Area Director, I need to start a new toastmaster club from scratch. When it was the time, somehow everyone and everything has taken its place which resulted in stating new club at JLT Dubai, and the second is on its way to get chartered at Greens Dubai Area. Also I have learned the basics for any start up is not just capital but we need to follow these steps too; 

Do the Homework.  Identify the Target.  Confirm whether passionate about the product or service.  Get an idea on what is the tolerance for risk.  Improve decision making skills.  Ready to burnout

Make a Game Plan.

Develop and Implement a Promotion Strategy.

Follow Up. Keep your new-found goodwill with the group intact by honouring your commitments.

File the Paperwork ASAP. Make sure you have all required documents filled out properly for the required licenses, all the dues are in, and file that paperwork ASAP so the new venture can kick start in full swing.

The endless opportunities offered by Toastmasters and the valuable experiences I gained will surely make us realize that how wonderfully the world is emerging before our eyes.

Build a Team. Identify key motivated people willing to support and aim for an eventual success. Meet with team/ Partner Leaders. This is a specially-designed, abbreviated meeting in which the dream idea is presented before the supporting team.

Now I am closer to my dream, my worry is halved, my confidence is doubled. I started believing in the saying that where there is a will, there is a way. If there is a chance in a million that I can do to achieve my dream, I will do it.

Take a Social Break: Allow some time (if available) for socializing to get public talking and interacting with one another. Plan the Next Steps. Make provisions for the full range of possible outcomes (i.e. from slight interest to enthusiastic, “when-can we-start” commitment).

With Toastmasters, I have never found a shortage of opportunities here. I’ve been able to grow in many roles, and Enterprise always has challenged me to stay at the top of my game. Thank you Toastmasters!!

“A Leader is only as good as the TEAM “ by Priya ,club contest all brought the members more and more together. Let me take this opportunity to put my gratitude to the entire team in words through this newsletter. Thank you to all the EXCOM and members for all the support and team work to help the club reach where it is today. Priya Nambiar -Past president " A Leader is only as good as the TEAM "

This quote holds completely true in my case. I took over as president of DGTC when it was at the pinnacle of performance. Pinnacle not in the context of awards, CC’s , CLs but in the context of enthusiasm of EXCOM and members. There was an aura of excitement and enthusiasm among members to do their best individually and for the club. So it was no surprise when our club got laurels in the form of 10 DCP points. Membership awards etc etc. The picnic get together , debate contest

President ship was also a great learning platform for me. Handle situations , criticisms with a smile, team work were few of them. Toastmaster is a platform where smallest of hard work is highly appreciated and entire teams support you unconditionally. “WE ARE NOT A TEAM, because we work together, WE ARE A TEAM, because we respect , trust and care for each other” Best wishes to the next EXCOM and wishing more success to the team and club. - Priya Nambiar -Past president

ARTICLES BY THE MEMBERS OF DGTC To write an article is an great opportunity to express our self. It builds up our self- confidence and courage, broadens the vision, and stimulates the enthusiasm, it also helps to express ideas more convincingly to others. ………………………………………………………………………… CHILDHOOD _by TM Indumathi

Path to an Icebreaker BY TM Sudhir Kunnath the flood gates opened and the sweat started gushing out of all pores in the skin . I felt a bout of Parkinsons affecting my whole body, which was rather more pronounced on my legs .

he human brain starts working the moment you're born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public."

“T

Somehow, gasping few breath , mustering some courage and I mumbled few garbled words which I am sure nobody understood . It was so garbled ,even if I had rattled few abuses it would have been difficult for any spy agencies to decipher it .

How true is it even truer than the gospel truth. I certainly vouch for this quote basis my experience , rather an unpleasant experience .

Finally , came the big Thank you and I rushed off the stage and headed straight to the rest room .

It was a momentous occasion, the 25th year get together of our school Alumni and 170th year of our schools inception. It was grand affair held in our school attended by all families, past teachers and principals. I grabbed the opportunity to deliver the Vote of thanks under an illusion that speaking and discussing with a small group gave me enough experience. Further, imagine the guts and overconfidence in me as I had a planned an impromptu for this grand occasion. The moment of truth dawned when I stood on the stage to speak . the sight

When I returned, the guilt and the naiveness in me felt the whole 600+ people had nothing else to discuss but my speech during the banquet dinner . That humiliating moment kindled the fire .It was then I resolved to get over this weakness and further was inspired by my son in Gavel club and then I decided to join Toast masters . Now my target is to deliver an awesome speech on our 50th Year alumni get together, without any perspiration but providing a whole lot of inspiration and make the whole audience speak about it during the banquet dinner.

of an ocean of heads in front of me and within few second of the usual opening filled with greeting , my sweat glands gave way, ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Picnic with DGTC_ byTM Prasant This was my first picnic in DGTC. As I know nothing comes free in this world. In my company which runs with billions of earnings, I already raised a concern to have 1 family event in a year. But there is no outcome yet. When I heard, we will be having picnic with family gathering. I felt very happy and said in my heart hats off to DGTC . It's not only about speaking or leadership skills. It’s about making a big family all together by getting an opportunity to know each other as well and that too with non-profit organization.

Coming back to Picnic, this was first time I was suppose to make big crowd engaged with some nice games and that too in front of my family. What an exciting in hearing itself. I got another opportunity to speak, though it was casual but yes it's not easy to start in front of big crowd. With the help of all supportive members of DGTC I made fun filled day for all and for my family. Specially, my elder daughter enjoyed the game with full involvement. Thanks to DGTC .

DGTC Third Anniversary cum Picnic _BY TM Deepa Manoj DGTC celebrated third anniversary of picnic on 27th Jan 2017 at Barsha pond park. It was a beautiful day with pleasant weather and a cool winter breeze, just too perfect for occasion. All the members and family assembled at a nice spot over looking the lake and laid out their picnic mat. Tm Piyush arranged a delicious snack Conner with samosa, Dhoklas, Khandavees, along with Pipping hot tea which went well with the winter morning. Tm Deepa Sasi arranged chips and juice corner for children to munch on. Everyone relished the snacks and geared up for the picnic games arranged by TM Nita. It includes separate games for the children and adults. Children had a blast with the balancing game, dig and the bone and tug of war. The adults relived their childhood with the " lagori" game and dog and the bone. Nita

introduced new game which was passing the orange. It was very hilarious to watch the adults struggle to pass an orange around. All the spouses of the members participated actively in the balancing game which seemed easy but was challenging. They had a good time figuring it out. After burning out the calories, all members gathered around for the cake cutting ceremony, followed by lunch. After lunch there was a small table topic session which had more participation from the children than adults. TM Prasant introduced a family game with minimum take way gifts for winners. if was fun and there was suspense till he end on who, the actual winner will be. TM Priya announced winners of all the games and distributed prizes. The grand finale was the photo shoot, it was a very marvelous day for all the DGTCians and their families
