15 minutes with Mr. Elwood Flynn, a man with a timeless sensibility for style.

“Elwood Flynn is one of the best high-end men’s clothing speciality retailers in Canada.” This is what you regularly hear from Flynn’s clients – sophisticated men who shop for men’s fashions all over the country and globe. When we mentioned to Mr. Flynn just how highly people think of his brand, his face eased into a humble smile. A moment later, Mr. Flynn was back to doing what he does remarkably well: guiding men towards the clothing that best represents their unique personalities. Flynn is a very busy person. He is as involved in his company’s day-to-day operations as he was the day when he opened his first store 60 years ago. Yet, being a true gentlemen, he graciously accepted our invitation for a quick and informal Q&A session for a story journal we call “The Good Life is Closer than You Think.” What follows is our best try to beset Mr. Flynn with as many questions as possible in our allotted fifteen minutes.

krisp: Clothes are big part of our identity. They show the world who we are, they are an integral part of our work, and they play a role in how we relax. What is missing from the modern man’s wardrobe? Mr. Flynn: A quality navy blue or black blazer. It’s true that the so-called men’s “business casual” look is very popular today, but there are many times when you want to do a little better, whether for an important meeting or presentation. Even if you’re wearing a pair of khakis and a polo shirt, throwing a good blazer on will instantly give you a significantly sharper look.

krisp: What is the most important accessory every man should own? Mr. Flynn: A quality pair of leather shoes is a must. The right pair of shoes can make all the difference when it comes to completing a look. As long as the clothes fit well, the right pair of shoes can really take the entire look to the next level. We carry a great selection of the top shoe brands. One of my all time favourites is Allen Edmonds. It's one of the world's leading manufacturers of quality leather men's shoes. I've worn a lot of different shoe brands over the years, but few have ever come close to the style, comfort, and durability of a pair of Alen Edmonds. (Author's note: an interesting fact -- as the New York Post has reported in the past, Michael Bloomberg, billionaire businessman, founder of Bloomberg L.P. and three-term mayor of New York City, wears Allen Edmonds shoes.)

krisp: What are some of the trends you’re seeing right now in menswear? Mr. Flynn: Let me mention two: 1. Five pocket, jean-style casual pants. They’re very popular as they can be worn in countless different ways, always providing both a flattering and comfortable fit. 2. Sports coats are very popular across all age groups and professions. There’s a lot of exciting things happening in sport coats, brought on through the combination of new colors (departing from the traditional palette), new styles, and innovative fabrics. The ones we carry come almost exclusively from the leading Italian fabric manufactures. krisp: One final note of advice. The polo shirt is no longer relegated to evenings and weekends. Today, a good polo shirt can add pep to every day and every occasion. The question is: tuck or untuck? Mr. Flynn: That’s up to the individual. krisp: Thank you for your time and hospitality Mr. Flynn!

During our conversation, we were pleased to discover that this year (2013) Mr. Flynn is celebrating his 60th year as a proprietor in Saskatoon's men's wear industry. Maybe it's just an intersting coincidence, but our partner for "The Good Life is Closer than You Think" initative, Porsche of Saskatchewan, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 this year, as well. As our ride on the day of the above conversation was a brand new 2013 911 model, we invited Mr. Flynn to see it and tell us what he thought about it. This is what followed: he approched the car, closely observed it, sat behind the wheel, and then, one more time, his face eased into a humble smile. Special thanks to Bruce Jay Duguay from Porsche of Saskatchewan for everything he did to make "The Good Life is Closer Than You Think" possible.
