Christmas â€˜Snap Shotâ€™ Guide 2011 Introduction
The team at Pivotal work hard to always keep up to date with what is happening within the Retail environment at any one particular time so that we can help keep our clients informed of new innovations and trends. The following pages are a catalogue of pictures taken for Christmas 2011 - a Snap Shot in time of how Retailers and Brands were promoting themselves at what is expected to be the busiest time of the year. At a time when most retailers make the majority of their yearly profits it is crucial that they make sure their stores are equipped with the right promotions and advertising. 2011 has been a very difficult year for most economies around the world. Brands and Retailers have had it hard with some stores going out of business and others announcing plans to reduce the amount of outlets they have. We wanted to see what Retailers did at this important time to try and combat the tough economic climate in an attempt to maximise their Christmas sales. Many Retailers started to try and tempt shoppers in with early promotions thinking it was better to get them to spend before the main January sales. Some did this quite well, but others did it very poorly and it was difficult to understand what they were really trying to convey. Over a two week period in December we went out taking pictures of stores and shopping centres up and down the country of which you will see some of the pictures within this Snap Shot guide. We wanted to cover a number of different sectors which include: Grocery, Health & Beauty, Fashion and Consumer Electronics. Through the guide you will see our summaries of each sector and what we think worked well. However, this is only our opinion and we are sure everyone will have their own ideas as well.

Christmas ‘Snap Shot’ Guide 2011 Grocery
All the big four chains put a great deal of effort in to getting their customers in to the Christmas spirit. They all had a large above the line marketing campaign which was joined up with the message they were pushing in store. We particularly liked Morrisons’ message as you came through the door of “ Come to us for Christmas” All the stores were well decorated over and above their usual POS with JS opting for a more traditional hanging snow flake. Both Asda and Tesco had a special Christmas aisle with 3D card headers and both had gone for large floor graphics. I think our favourite overall would have been Tesco as the whole of their campaign was very well joined up across the store. We particularly like the large ‘Toy Shop’ header and the way in which they incorporated the bauble in to all their POS from headers to aisle stoppers through to shelf edge labels.
