2018-2019 Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge Board of Directors

A Letter from the Director The arts bring our community vibrancy and life. They add color where there is none, and bring out the color where it is diminished. We want you to know the amazing talent we have right here in Pitt County and have several opportunities for you to be a part of our arts community. The Arts Calendar: The Pitt County Arts Calendar helps you find all of the arts and cultural events throughout our area. Located at pittcountyarts. org/events this is your spot to find out what to do on a special night out and to support our local arts organizations. This calendar is in conjunction with the Convention & Visitors Bureau’s website that lists all of our community events, and our arts events are listed on both. The Artist Database: Find that amazing quartet to play at your event, or commission an artist to do an incredible portrait. You can find the right artist for the right job on our Countywide Arts Database at and really see the talent we have in our own backyard! Memberships: Our non-profit arts organizations add so much to our community. Many of these organizations are staffed meagerly, and some are led by volunteers, but they all work hard to bring our community quality arts programming. By attending their events you can experience all that they have to offer. However, by also becoming a member you can help them thrive! Please become a member of the Pitt County Arts Council today at: and check out our other organization’s membership opportunities as well at community/directory

Youth Public Arts Project The Youth Public Arts Project began in 2005, when former District Court Judge Gwyn Hilburn, Pitt County Schools Arts Coordinator Jane Austen Behan, and Emerge Gallery Executive Director Holly Garriott sat down to talk about starting a free arts program for at-risk youth. The program started with three boys and has grown to a program that can now accommodate 30 boys and girls. Every other Saturday throughout the school year, youth from all over Pitt County come to Emerge Gallery & Art Center for a day full of creativity. Part of the day half of the group works with a visual artist, and the rest of the day they work with a professional musician. Once a month they also have the amazing opportunity to have a guest musician from the

African American Music Series stop in for an interactive lesson and lunch with everyone. The goals of the program are to use the arts as a vehicle to build self-esteem, interpersonal skills, and to have a greater appreciation for our community and our regional arts heritage. The Youth Public Arts Project is part of the TAPS (Traditional Arts Program for Students) grant program through the North Carolina Arts Council. In 2016, Emerge was able to expand and add the musical element because of this grant. Participants are referred to the program by their school counselor, art teacher, or music teacher. Interested participants or donors can contact Paula Rountree at or 252-551-6947 for more information.

City Art Gallery For thirty-three years City Art Gallery has been a fixture in the art world in Greenville and the eastern North Carolina region. The gallery represents fine artists and craftspeople known throughout the region and nation. Owner Torrey Stroud has put City Art Gallery on the map featuring amazing artists and supplying artwork to our community. Torrey founded City ArtWorks in New Bern in 1987, and ten years later moved the gallery to Greenville and changed the name to City Art Gallery.

Richard Fennell’s exhibition “Working from the Edge” will be on display through March 16, 2019 and then new work by John Beerman, North Carolina Master Painter, will be on exhibit from March 21 through April 22, 2019. You can find paintings, sculpture, ceramics and glass in this beautiful light-filled gallery space. The main exhibitions change out each month, so there is always something new and special to come and see. City Art Gallery also offers design, consultation, and installation services. Family Workshops Seeing a child create is one of the most mesmerizing and memorable things. However, actually getting to create side by side with your child is an event you will never be able to forget. It helps bring out the creativity in both of you and helps find what so many adults lose as we age and let reality break into our opportunity to get creative. Emerge Gallery now offers the opporunity for parent and child to experience making some of these amazing things together. From working on the potter’s wheel to creating Valentine’s or Mother’s Day surprises, this is the perfect opportunity to have that special parent-child or grandparentgrandchild event. Most of the workshops are for children ages 3 and up (except for the Mother’s Day Workshop which is 7 and up). OIL PASTEL WEAVING: Sunday, March 24 1:30pm until 3:30pm SILLY FACE CLAY PLANTER: Sunday, April 14 1:30pm until 3:30pm MOTHER’S DAY PENDANT OR EARRINGS: Sunday, May 5 1:30pm until 3:30pm *More workshops will come in the Fall of 2019 after summer camps
