Michael Andrews ENC 1102 Joseph Cottle 17 February 2013 Cyber Bullying These days in the world we are surrounded with technology. With this technology we are able to send pictures from one place to another in a matter of seconds or we even have the ability to talk to someone face to face at any moment.
This great technology that we have
however can be used for either good or bad purposes. Some of these technologies lead to things such as cyber bullying. This can be done with social media sites, video rooms, and chat rooms. Everyone and their moms are bound to have a Facebook, Twitter, or an Instagram, and in most cases people have all three of the media sources. These sources are able to send personal messages from one person to another or to a huge group of people in a matter of seconds. So these sites are ideal for those people who like to bully people. There are many ways this can be done such as a bully can straight go onto a person page and put nasty things that are offensive to not just him but other around him. Also with this media there is the ability to upload pictures. This could be bad because let us just say that a boyfriend and girlfriend have a fight and break up. Then let us say that this girlfriend is kind of a freak in a sexual way. She liked to send her boyfriend pictures of herself naked or in sexual situations via text. Finally lets just say that the boyfriend kept all those pictures and was very upset able the break up. Then he decides to post those pictures on Facebook or Instragram for all of both his and her friends to see. Then
everyone well see these pictures and then this poor girl who was just trying to please her boyfriend is now the laughing stock of the school, work, or just in public. Not to mention all the dirty comments she will be receiving from girls calling her a “whore” or “slut” and the guy side making fun of her for seeing her naked. Another way that social media can be a bad thing is when someone is able to hack one s account. This can lead to terrible things regarding one’s personal information. If someone were to hack into your facebook, etc. and then were able tto change ones account info and also to post other thing this could be a bad situation. For example, say a man hacks a girls Facebook and goes on her account and writes up seen things about people and even about the girl and changes the password so the girl can not get in. This could cause a real problem in that even if the girl knows what is written there is no way that sees can take the information down. This causes her to get in trouble with people that she supposedly sent messages to. This ordeal can be seen in the ABC Family original movie, Cyber Bully. The movie does exactly as I have describe in that it takes a teenage girl and gives her a Facebook, but then she is hacked by her own brother and then people don’t like her from the comment that he had posted. She is unable to go to school and even in one part of the movie contemplates suicide to escape all the harassment that she is receiving but in the end does not and ends up getting pass it and helps to get a law passed that stops what she has gone through. Another problem that is seen over the internet would be that of video chat rooms. These include sites such as chatroulette and omegle. The point of these websites is to be able to chat with people without actually having to type instead you are on video and you can also use sound in order to speak to the person you are talking too. These sits can be a problem because they have video and some girls don’t use the best decision making when they are on video. If a
couple of guys where to ask a couple of girls to take off their tops, I believe eventually they would just because men are a lot more persuasive then given credit for. So during these chats normally a bond is connected more than a chat room because the people are normally who they appear and not some catfish type person who could say to be 24 but really 50. The person is able to see the person so they are more likely to discuss things they would not in a chat room. So once they have chatted a little bit then the man might ask for the woman to take her top off and little does she know that he is recording the scene and taking photos on his computer as well. So once she does this she is definitely comfortable with him she might give her name and where she lives and quite possibly her phone number. This could be a problem in that the man that got her to strip could be a stoker and also a trouble maker in that he knows where she lives so he might pop up all of a sudden. This was the case of Amanda Todd who was a tenth grade student in Canada. She went on one of the video sites and was convinced to strip and she did. “He snapped a photo, attempted to use it to blackmail her into performing an erotic "show" and when she refused, reportedly made good on his threat by forwarding the image to her friends, family and classmates. (Hopper)
This lead to her having depression and even to it to the point that
she taped herself committing suicide so that she could finally escape the scrutiny that she got from her peers. “The last event of a person's life may be a relatively minor event in a long chain of factors that led to it - even in cases of intense cyberbullying." (Hopper)
