Pitch and Putt Ireland Hon. Secretary’s Report 2022 Mr. President, Fellow Officers, Patrons of Pitch and Putt Ireland, representatives of Regional/County Boards and Clubs, I present my report for 2021 to Convention. Firstly, I want to express my sympathies to all in Pitch and Putt and their families who have lost near and dear ones over the year. Well, 2021 started where 2020 finished in lockdown, A.G.M.’s had to be postponed due to no meeting allowed indoors and Zoom was not recommended at the time, however, later we were informed that because of the continuing pandemic they would be accepted. The Annual Convention was held via Zoom in June 2021. We continued to work from home with only limited access to the Campus and the Office. Shaun O’Donnell left us in November 2021 for pastures new and our Children’s Officer Catherine Keane resigned her post, I wish them well for the future. Pitch and Putt Ireland became compliant with the Governance Code for Sport in 2021. Our membership increased again this year and for the first time since around 2008 we hit over 10,000, thanks to the splendid work done by the Clubs. When we were allowed to resume playing, we kicked off the season with the playing of the 2020 Strokeplay Championships, thanks to Clubs for hosting these events, St. Anne’s, St. Stephen’s and Kilbeggan. We also had a limited calendar of Opens and Scratch Cups. The National Matchplay and Strokeplay Championships were held for the Under 16’s, The Ladies and the Gents. Pitch and Putt Ireland look forward to a full calendar of events in 2022, we have produced a Fixture Book this year and let us hope it does not end up like the 2020 version. I would like to thank Anne for her work and assistance during the past year and also Shaun for his help during the year. Thanks to all for the Nominations this year and if elected I will do the best I can on your behalf. Thank you.
Michael Murphy Hon. Secretary

Pitch and Putt Ireland National Competition Co-ordinators Report 2021 Mr President, fellow NEC Officers, Delegates, and Friends, it is great to be back with some kind of report for the 2021 season. It has been a tough 2 years for all types of Sport. When we were allowed to meet up again, we started off the season with the playing of the 2020 National Strokeplay Finals and I would like to thank the Clubs who hosted them, St. Stephen’s, St. Anne’s, and Kilbeggan. In the Junior Ladies @ Kilbeggan the winner was Dolores Mullen (Glenville), Sarah O’Neill (Collins) was the Intermediate winner and winning her first National Senior Title on the back nine due to Covid restrictions was Liz Quinn (Collinstown). Jake Shine (Listowel) won the Gents Junior title in St. Anne’s, Michael Conway (Tralee) was the Intermediate winner in St. Stephen’s and the Senior winner in St. Anne’s was Shane Murphy (Rocklodge) on the back nine from Frank Dineen (St. Anne’s). We then moved on to the 2021 restricted calendar, The Under 16 Matchplay Championship was hosted by the Glenville Club and we had an excellent display of Pitch and Putt from the Boys and Girls. The Boys winner was Conor Mullen (Kilbeggan), the plate winner was Adam O’Brien (Lakewood) and the Girls winner was Ella Moynihan (Tralee). The Under 16 Strokeplay took place in the Lakeside club and the winner of the Boys was Mark Cadden (Oldcastle), the best Under 13 was Brian McCarthy (Deerpark). The Girl’s Champion is Sarah Cooney (Seapoint). The Ladies and Gents Matchplay was hosted by the Ryston Club and Damien Fleming (Deerpark) emerged the winner in the Gents, while the Ladies was won by Christine Byrne (Ryston). The Nett winner in the Ladies was Abby Whelan (St. Bridget’s). The Gents Strokeplay was hosted by the Navan and Stackallen Clubs, The Senior winner was Ian Donnelly (Killineer) with his first National Senior title. Justin McKeon (Prosperous) was the winner of the Intermediate, while Cian O’Callaghan (Bishopstown) won the Junior grade in Stackallen. The Ladies Championship was played in Tullamore, where the Senior title went to Ger Ward (Portmarnock), the Intermediate title went Denise Pyke (Tullamore), and the Junior to Margaret Hennessy (Riverdale). We have set out on a full calendar of events for 2022 and if things keep going as they are we would hope to see you at some stage of the Year. I would like to thank my fellow Officers for their help over the last while and to say a massive thank you to all the Clubs who hosted events over the last 2 years. I would also like to thank those who have nominated me this year. Myles McMorrow

Communications & Press Officer Report Pitch & Putt Ireland Convention 26/2/22 Fellow Officers, Patrons, Delegates and Observers, It gives me great pleasure to present this, my eighth report to the meeting on our media activities. While we had another restricted playing year like 2020 during 2021, we did manage to get some noteworthy things done. A lot of what we did this year revolved around streaming as we added to some of the things we intended to show more when we set up the new provincial pages. Streaming At the 2020 National Strokeplay weekend back in June we did some streaming from St Annes at the Mens events there and streamed interviews with the winners afterwards. Obviously we could not follow it to a natural end as with no playoff it was not guaranteed to be the last group that would produce the winner. I want to thank John Manning for coming to Cork on the Saturday to offer assistance as I became unavailable later in the day. At the National U16 Matchplay weekend in Glenville in July we streamed both days with the Girls final on Saturday and the Boys Championship and Plate finals on the Sunday. I was happy we added the Girls final to our list of events and I felt the standard of the match lived up to expectations. In Ryston we managed to stream the Mens Quarter-Finals on Sunday evening in addition to having a stream of every match on the Monday. We managed to stream the Senior Mens Strokeplay playoff in Navan until our Vice President’s battery ran out but in conjunction with Sean Tackaberry we are looking at equipment that would be far more reliable for streaming than smart phones. I want to thank everyone who streamed something I asked of them this year. It by and large worked more often than it did not. Interviews/Video Calls The multiplicity of venues for the 2021 National Strokeplay Finals in September meant that we had to come up with something different for talking to our 2021 winners after their respective wins. Mark and myself came up with an idea where we would do a video call on Facebook speaking to all the winners a few days after their win. We split it up over two evenings and it worked well. We decided we would try more video calls afterwards as we did another on December 9th where we spoke with both of our Irish No 1’s Damien Fleming and Chrissie Byrne. We will look at more this year based on subject matter but all calls are available for viewing on our YouTube channel for those who are not on Facebook. I also did some interviews with players on Day 1 of the National Adult Matchplays which I felt worked well too and added to the occasion. Backspin Again two editions were done this year, one to coincide with Easter when it was becoming clearer as to when we could get back out onto the course and the other at the end of November to coincide with Shaun O’Donnell’s departure as Development Manager. Shaun put together his final edition from Qatar in a sign of what modern technology can do and I want to thank him for his work in putting it together the editions
he did since late 2020. I thank John Manning again for supplying the bulk of the articles. I will assess where to take it going forward when Shaun’s replacement is fully in place. Updates With streaming becoming more common, updates maybe aren’t as much desired now but I still feel we should focus on the basics in terms of on course stuff as well as results as soon as they become known. You will never be able to please everyone with these but at least if you get a basic structure right more things can be added onto that. Ultimately the way media in general has changed we have to do a lot of this ourselves and not rely on others to relay information for us. I notice a lot of newspapers have cut back on Sporting ‘Factfiles’ in their sports pages where a lot of our results would be printed. A lot of the coverage I feel we will ultimately get will be when we are representing the country at an International tournament or for some other ‘niche’ aspect like the rise in our membership figures last year in the Irish Examiner. I would like to thank the Examiner for requesting our fixtures again for their 2022 Sports Calendar. Local Media I feel this is very much an untapped area for us at the moment especially when it is so much easier for someone in one geographic area to deal with specific outlets. If John Manning can write the Echo column for Cork from the north side of Dublin there is no reason others can’t go to their local media outlets and see can get they get some publicity for our sport there. I will gladly provide assistance to anyone wishing to try and start it off something in their local area. Local media love hearing about sports like ours because it offers them a chance to look different to national outlets. Conclusion I feel we are in a decent position overall with what we provide. There are always improvements that can be made but I feel we can hold our heads up now against other sporting organizations of our size and be able to tell the wider public what we are about. A bit of belief in our abilities and dedication goes a long way in life I find. Thanks I offer my profound thanks to John Manning for all his assistance in helping me fulfill this role and be so obliging in the requests I make of him. My thanks to my colleagues on the NEC for their assistance and support once more along with club officials and those at national events who I requested favours of. I want to give my final words to our outgoing President Mervyn Cooney. Mervyn has been very supportive of what I have tried to do during the last six years and even came up with a few ideas for me to work on himself. I believe we have put in things that can take us forward in the coming years under his watch and I wish him and his family well as his focus starts to turn a lot closer to home for him now.
Yours in Sport,
Jason O’Connor ___________________________ Communications & Press Officer

That the EIRCODE of the course be included in fixtures book or any publication that contains a list of Secretaries and course addresses. Kilbeggan That the P.J. and Catherine Bell National Seniors Strokeplay Competition be changed to run in 2 sections. McDonagh Kildare County Board Matchplay date be brought forward to earlier in the summer McDonagh That where a qualifying event is held for a National Matchplay Championship such qualifying event is run on a Matchplay basis, except when it would be unsafe to do so due to Health Safety concerns. Douglas That entry fee for the National Matchplay and National Strokeplay would be increased to €25. Entry into a standard scratch cup is €10 across the country – the most prestigious events in the country should have a premium. More income would allow an appropriate levy to go to the clubs that host the events. Meaning hosting the event would not be a loss-making issue. Will Kill Ghost entries. St. Anne’s That the Handicap system would be expanded for Club Multi card competitions to take an average of all the cards played by the players as opposed to the ‘Best 2’ cards. It is felt that players who lack consistency in play are unduly punished for occasional good cards when this is not reflective in their underlying standard. St. Anne’s Raffeen Creek pitch & putt club wish to propose a minor change to the handicap system which we believe will benefit the game in general and reflect a fairer adjustment to player’s handicaps. Currently the system works on an average net score which adjusts a player handicap when all players in all grades have an equal chance of winning the overall prize. When it comes to club’s scratch cup the thinking is its one competition being played for, but in reality it’s three competitions, e.g., Junior Scratch Cup, Intermediate Scratch Cup and Senior Scratch Cup. Currently the handicaps are adjusted on the overall average score on the day on 3 grades, which leads to some individuals putting in rogue scores and others not handing in score cards distorting the average score. Seniors cannot win the lower grades i.e., intermediate, or junior, intermediates cannot
win the junior grade but can have adjustments to their handicap on the scores of all grades.

We believe scratch cups should be entered as three separate competitions on the system. This will allow for the calculation of the average score for each grade and will reflect a true average in each grade making it difficult for the rogue scores and individuals trying to beat the system getting shots back. Raffeen Creek That for a trial period of three years that a geographically regionalized Strokeplay qualification for the National Matchplay Championship would be authorized. Based on prorata entries in each region. Fermoy That the rankings are used to seed players in National Ladies & Gents Matchplay Finals. The 1st seed being the defending Champion and subsequent 3 seeds to consist of qualified players with the highest-ranking positions in the current year. In the Ladies scratch matchplay , the 4 ladies seeded as per above are automatically seeded in the first round proper and excluded from preliminary matches should preliminary matches be required in the given year. Ryston/Kildare County Board That the National Ladies Strokeplay Championships revert back to 54 holes event in line with the Gents equivalent Championship. Ryston/Kildare County Board That the over 55s competition be changed to over 65s or have 2 competitions. McDonagh/Kildare CB
