Why do we join this organization? How long will this course take? Will I be able to speak with confidence? What makes you think this course is for me? These were some of the very intriguing questions that was posed to me from guests who were invited to our meeting in Pioneers NMC Toastmasters club As challenging it might sound to some, this was the acid test for me to set the tone right and shed the many sprouting inhibitions that they had in their confused mind. The 6 month journey as club President of Pioneers NMC Toastmasters club has been very gratifying. For me every meeting is a celebration, an accomplishment, a dream come true The shaky walk when the guest walks towards the podium to attempt his or her very first table topic session to brimming with confidence when the same person is announced as the Table Topic winner is heartwarming From seeing members who began with attempting to shed their fears to winning accolades and now inspiring others to join the bandwagon is the victory which they carry as ambassadors of this program From the first day I joined this club and taking over the mantle of Vice President Education to the current role of Club President, the journey traversed has been a beautiful learning experience This year, our club members participated in the Division I Inter Club Debate Contest and we as a club were so thrilled to see our club on the big stage The laurels that members have achieved is a sheer example of grit, determination and the passion to keep striving towards excellence We as a club are now a distinguished club having clinched 5 precious brownie points this year within the first 6 months - this is a repeat feat having achieved this last year as well The journey from meeting 1 to meeting 50 surely has very special memories, the support of our current AD TM Anita Naidu, who is also the Immediate Past President along with stalwarts as TM Kumaresh (Past President), TM Faheem Khan, TM Vipin Diwakar under whose able leadership this club was formed during his tenure as Area Director. Witnessing our club grow at every meeting, makes me feel proud of the executive committee - the strong pillars of the club without whom this wouldn’t have been a reality And special thanks to our dear members who are the pulse of our club. Heartfelt gratitude to NMC management for all their support and encouragement. As we delve into the new year, with renewed energy, and power, let us all collectively and individually do all that we can to take our club and ourselves to even greater heights Let us all be ambassadors to face the questions and answer them with the sheer passion and love that lured us into being part of this wonderful organization Toastmasters international Congratulations Pioneers NMC toastmasters club Let us together -raise the bar higher Shalini Menezes, DTM President, Pioneers NMC Toastmasters club Club 6555855, Area 31, Division I, District 105 2019-20 Club 6555885, Area 31, Div I Dist 105 Pioneers NMC Toastmasters Club

My Journey to Toastmasters On 21st Oct 2018, one afternoon at 1500 hrs, I was sitting in my office pantry on 3rd floor having a coffee lost in thoughts. My colleague Mr. Syed, who was a toastmaster for the past 10 years walked into the pantry. At that moment, Mr. Syed enquired with me, about me and my deep thoughts

As I kept progressing in the selection of my paths with Pathways and executing my projects, I realized my gaps, I evaluated myself and started implementing the suggestions offered by evaluators in my forthcoming speeches. I gained confidence in delivering public speeches. This learning not only helped me in toastmasters but helped me to improve the training that I deliver.

Having a cup of coffee, our discussion started from office work to personal life and then further moved to friends and community life. I asked Mr.Syed, to give me some suggestions on expanding my friend's circle and contacts. And as the chatting continued, Mr.Syed asked me if I have ever heard about Toastmasters International. I replied, that I did not know about it. He opened up the TMI Website and explained TMI. He further guided me on different clubs available in Al Qusais and Al Nahda Area. He asked me to visit the clubs as a guest and confirmed it is free. I really did not understand what was all about. I contacted different clubs in the locality. Some of them replied. Firstly, I attended Muhaisnah toastmasters Club as a guest a couple of times. I realized there is something that I can learn and grow. But it seemed far in terms of vicinity and accessibility, and hence searched for other clubs. Then I came across ANTC (Al Nahda Toastmasters Club) and Pioneers NMC TM Club. I attended both the clubs and further decided to join with Pioneers NMC TM Club. On Feb 2, 2019, I joined pioneers NMC TM Club, under the leadership of TM. Anita Naidu & DTM Shalini Menezes. In a short span of time, I was encouraged, guided and supported to take up different roles in every meeting. I was also appointed as Club Treasurer for Pioneers for the year 2019- 2020.

I am really grateful and thankful to my friend Mr. Syed who introduced me to the world of TMI and helped to improve my communication and leadership skills. I even recommend the same to whoever is reading this article to just jump into the pool of TMI and I promise you will definitely try to see immense positive changes in your life. I once again thank all my TMI mentors and club members who are supporting me to continue this journey and making a difference in my life. Eating Sugar does not cause diabetes One of the most common questions in the diabetic world is, whether sugar or other carbohydrates cause diabetes. Because of the elevated blood sugar levels in diabetes, a common notion has held that eating sugar somehow triggers the disease process. The notion is understandable. Blood sugar levels are high in diabetes, so the conventional wisdom is that, sugar somehow triggers the disease process. However, some of the diabetes experts have a different view. Plant based diet experts like Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. John Mcdougall say “Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar.” These and other doctors have worked to educate people about the causes of diabetes and the role that foods play in the disease process. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease (Your immune system attack your own health cells by mistake). Type 2 diabetes—the most common form of the disease—is caused by insulin resistance and pancreatic failure. Here is what you need to understand: Sugar Is your Body’s Fuel The human body runs on glucose, a simple sugar. Just as petrol powers your car, glucose powers your muscles, other organs, and the rest of your body. Glucose comes from fruit and from starchy foods, such as grains, beans, and potatoes, and your body can also produce it when needed. Without it you would die.

tochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria are small processing units inside the cells that turn sugar and fat into fuel. Mitochondrial dysfunction could be caused by too much fat in the food, lack of exercise and sleep deprivation. Among these, food plays a major role in insulin resistance. To try to overcome insulin resistance, the pancreas produces excess insulin. When the pancreas can no longer keep up, blood sugar rises. The combination of insulin resistance and pancreatic cell failure leads to type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes is similar to type 2 and occurs during pregnancy. This may surprise you! Several studies have looked for relationships between sugar and diabetes risk. A 2017 metaanalysis, based on nine reports of 15 cohort studies including 251,261 participants, found no relationship between total sugars and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Those consuming the most sugar actually had a 9 percent lower risk of developing diabetes, compared with those consuming the least sugar, although the difference was not statistically significant (meaning that it could have been a chance result). Similarly, fructose was not significantly associated with diabetes risk. Sucrose appeared to have a significant protective association. Those consuming the most sucrose had 11 percent less risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared with those consuming the least. Still, Sugar Is Not a Health Food

Diabetes means having higher-than-normal blood sugar level. It comes in three common forms: Type 1 diabetes is caused by the destruction of the insulin-producing cells of anorgan called pancreas, usually through an autoimmune reaction as mentioned earlier. The triggers for this process is called a leaky gut syndrome Type 2 diabetes typically starts with insulin resistance. This means that the cells resist insulin’s efforts to send sugar into the cells. What causes insulin resistance? It appears to be caused by mi-

So our bodies actually run on sugar—that is, glucose. Moreover, sugar has only 4 calories per gram (much less than fats and oils, which have 9 calories per gram), and sugar’s calories can be used for metabolic needs or stored as glycogen. So does that mean that added sugars are nontoxic? Certainly not! Although glucose is an important fuel for the body, there is no physiological need for added sugars. Because sugar dissolves into sodas and snack foods, it is easy to consume surClub 6555885, Area 31, Div I Dist 105 Pioneers NMC Toastmasters Club

prisingly large quantities of it, potentially contributing to weight gain, elevated triglycerides, poor dental health and osteoporosis.

Conclusion

1.“Because you’re worth it…”

Diabetes is a deadly disease. Type 2 diabetes, in specific, has become a worldwide epidemic as Western eating habits and poor lifestyle have become so common. An understanding of its causes is essential to identifying means of fighting it. The roots of type 2 diabetes remain in insulin resistance and pancreatic failure, and the blame for the current diabetes epidemic lies in an overall lifestyle pattern emphasizing meat, dairy products, and fatty foods, lack of exercise, stress and sleep deprivation. A diet emphasizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes and avoiding animal products helps prevent diabetes and improves its management when it has been diagnosed. The notion that “sugar causes diabetes” is incorrect. TM Jerold

My Way to Success!

The Unchanging self

I joined toastmasters in October 2019. My journey so far has been pretty good and way beyond my expectations. I still remember the first time I was called on stage to deliver a table topic speech. I was very nervous and shivering to view the crowd sitting in front of me and words hardly came out from my mouth, that too on a simple topic of “Decluttering”.

Time (5th October, 2019) What a meeting…. Who could ever imagine we could be teleported to Africa and brought into Mumbai whilst being in Dubai debating on the benefits of online education V/s traditional education along with forming a gavel club within a span of 2 hours. We @Pioneers NMC toastmasters club did it. And how was that possible…..Special thanks to our TMOD TM Abdulgadir who took us on a ride with TIME..as a professional.. not a NEOPHYTE. Thank you TM Abdulgadir for sharing the benefits of time with that lovely exercise.. we learnt how to prioritise time.. still a long way to go. Our guest speaker TM Nelson from Al Nahda toastmasters club explained shared a wonderful story on how a man of stone succumbed to something naïve. TM Anita poured out her passion with perseverance and her achievements when she succeeded in opening a gavel club in her daughter's school. TM Raji aka the legendary actress from Mumbai who won the best actress award for her movie..Bachpan Bachao and gave her acceptance speech. These speeches were well evaluated by TM Siva, TM Prema and DTM Shalini respectively. An education session par excellence.. we all learnt the nuances of the artof debating.. and we will put our heart in this neophyte art. And a mock debate.. am sure all of us learnt a lot today.
