Yemen Coffee at Al-Zahra Making a Change, One Coffee Bean at a Time

Note from the Editor: I attended a Cy Fair Chamber of Commerce Networking Breakfast at Blackhorse Golf Course a few weeks ago, where everyone had an opportunity to speak on behalf of their business or non-profit. A slightly nervous young man stood up and introduced himself as Hasan Rangwala, the Co-Founder and Operations Director of Yemen Coffee at Al-Zahra. He spoke briefly, but eloquently, of his vision to help the people of Yemen rise from poverty and addiction to a narcotic derived from the Khat shrub, by selling rich, high quality Yemeni coffee in the United States. While his goal was lofty, I was astounded to learn that this entrepreneur was just a few days from his 16th birthday.

asan and his brother, Hussain, 13, are international travelers. Their parents, Amir and Zahra, encourage them to develop a more global picture of the world. “They are so entitled in the United States that we think it crucial that they learn about life outside of their own,” shares Zahra. Yemen several years ago, and one to Egypt this summer made such an impact on Hasan, that he was spurred to action upon returning to Houston.

“While I was in Egypt, I made friends with a boy my age. He told me that he had escaped the war in Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Middle East, and in the world, and had come to Egypt in search of an education and a better life. I was shocked that he had left his parents, and had made the dangerous journey alone! He told me that the best, the richest coffee in the world was grown in Yemen. I took it as a sign from God that I should help these people. Despite their geopolitical instability, I was determined to help the farmers by bringing their coffee to America.

I asked my brother, Hussain, to be my business partner.

My parents, Amir and Zahra Rangwala, were both very happy and supported my entrepreneurship, as well as

(Zahra Rangwala owns and operates a boutique digital agency which provides marketing, e-commerce, and logistical support to businesses in Houston and nationwide). The brothers selected the name Al-Zahra as the brand name for their coffee, in honor of their mother. “We launched our website on August 1st,” comments Hasan.

When asked what steps were in the works to grow the business, he explained, "There is a greater need for building awareness about Yemeni coffee, and getting Yemen back on the map for coffee drinkers.” How will he do this? “By providing free samples so that people can try and compare the rich and flavorful coffee beans to the ones they are drinking now!”

Turkey, Kenya, Tanzania, to name just a few countries. Two years ago, they were able to witness the poverty in Yemen for themselves.

“Due to the political instability in Yemen, it is no longer feasible to travel there,” states Hasan. “After looking at slums and the conditions in many developing countries, I have learned to always be grateful that my family lives in the USA, a land of freedom and opportunity, that I should never complain and take basic necessities for granted, and as much as possible, help human kind around the globe.”

Hasan is a sophomore at Bridgeland High School where he has distinguished himself academically, loves science and history, and is a member of the Health Occupation Student Association, (HOSA). He plans to start body building as his next extracurricular activity.

The teen’s vision for the future includes becoming a successful pediatrician, and dedicating some of his time to helping those that cannot afford medical care.

Dedicated, driven, and with the support of his parents, Hasan plans to continue growing his business while pursuing his medical career.

Hussain is a 7th grader at Smith Middle School. Their sister, Alefiyah, age 6, attends Pope Elementary.

Open since July 11, Retro Café is located on highway 290 just past Mueschke Road.

While 290 construction may have hampered feeder traffic, Foodies in Cypress have nonetheless discovered this delightful little café and have made it their go-to place for authentic Vietnamese fare, friendly staff and great service. Locally owned and operated, Tonee Nguyen, his wife Phoenix Pham, and sons Devin and Kevin, work alongside Tonee’s mother-in-law, Van Huynh, bringing Vietnamese dishes to Cypress. A former off shore oil rig worker, Tonee decided to leave the rig behind and open a restaurant. Tonee’s obsession with retro toys led his wife, Phoenix, to suggest the name Retro Café for their new venture. Children of

A pristine kitchen and a bright and airy front of the house offers dining for 37 customers at a time. The menu, while not expansive, nonetheless includes a variety of items at a reasonable price.

Local Foodie, Stacy Tran, has become a Retro Café regular, and recommends that customers order the spring rolls “…made fresh to order, with peanut sauce that is the bomb, the Crispy Chicken Wings with green spicy sauce, the yummy pho, and the barbeque pork Bahn Mi.” Tran is quick to give credit to Retro Café’s customer service. “My mom came to visit, and I needed Vietnamese food fast! Within 10 minutes, they had everything ready for my son to pick up! I’m so happy there’s good Vietnamese food so close to me. Tonee Nguyen and his team did a great job getting everything done in a timely manner AND they DID NOT forget the condiments we needed to enjoy our lunch. This restaurant also has my mom’s approval for good Viet food!”

“We get some really great reviews on our Vietnamese Bahn Mi sandwiches,” says Nguyen. “We serve them

on good quality bread, toasted, with grilled meats, meatballs, and fresh veggies.”

Vermicelli bowls are generously portioned, and served with chicken, beef, or pork, fresh vegetables, and an egg roll.

Rice platters, combination sandwich meals, and steaming bowls of pho make for a tasty lunch or dinner. The homemade wontons and flavorful broth of the wonton soup will bring a smile to one’s lips. Served as an appetizer, Laura Robbins says that you can’t go wrong with the Korean Fried Chicken. Retro Café receives high marks for their freshly squeezed-toorder fruit and veggie juices, as well as their 24 oz. fruit smoothies such as peach, mango, cantaloupe, blueberry, and even avocado. Life’s too short not to try something new. Make a few selections from Retro Café’s tempting menu, check out the toys, (and even buy a few), and play a few games of Ms. Pac Man; you’ll be drifting back to the 80’s in no time.

CAE has been supporting our local veterans these past two years through fundraisers, bringing diners to the First Friday Steak Nights and charitable events. Looking for a great steak? Houston certainly has its share of premier steakhouses such as Brenner’s, Killen’s, and Del Frisco’s. While you’re likely to enjoy your meal at any of those fine establishments, the prospect of paying $50 for a single

ribeye, dressing up, driving for miles and paying a babysitter might just be enough to keep you at home on a Friday night. Truth be told, one doesn’t have to leave Cypress to find an awesome steak dinner at an extraordinary price. Just head down the road a piece to the VFW Post 8905 for their First-Friday-ofthe-Month Steak Night.

“The VFW Steak Night is part of our community outreach program. We do it as a community service to bring people from the area together.

We are an open post; you do not need to be a veteran or a member to visit. We get a mix of people from all walks of life. Also, the post is a great place to find resources to help veterans,” explains VFW Post 8905 Junior Vice Commander, Joshua Wilcox.

Veterans John McIntyre and Cameron Clark, together with Cameron’s wife, Paula, attended the August Steak Night. The men met at the VA and had attended a previous monthly event.

An Army Infantryman for 8 years, 11 months, McIntyre completed tours of duty in Bosnia, Germany, and Iraq.

When asked about his steak, the veteran pronounced it “Impeccable! I loved it! Medium rare, just the way I like it!”

Clark, served in both the Marine and Navy, “Thirty years, 4 tours, The Philippines, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan.” After one visit, he couldn’t wait to persuade his wife to accompany him. “No matter where you come from, you’ll leave here happy and full,” he stated.

The monthly Steak Night will not be held in September, as the VFW post 8905 Auxiliary will be hosting

its Annual BBQ Cook Off, Friday and Saturday, September 7-8, 2018, 11am - ? BBQ sandwiches and sausages on a stick will be served starting at 11am on Saturday, with the Saturday Night Dance starting at 4pm.

How to Step Out of Your Style Comfort Zone With fashion, we have the opportunity to express ourselves.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard women say, "I love that ______, but I could NEVER pull it off." My response is always, "Yes you can! You just decide to wear it, and then pull it off!"

I think what is holding us back from really exploring different looks, or extra funky pieces is that we want to err on the side of blending in because standing out can be scary. (This is all coming from someone who has a purple mohawk and lives in suburbia...so I totally get it.)

We are so concerned about what other people think, that we rob ourselves of the opportunity to try something different! Does this mean I suggest showing up to work in a full glitter bodysuit?

Well...it just depends where you work... I'm kidding...ish...

CFISD Unveils 2018-19 Safety and Security Action Plan Following a summer of planning, the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD safety and security committee unveiled its 2018-2019 Safety and Security Action Plan at the Board of Trustees committee-of-the-whole meeting on Aug. 9.

Comprised of representatives of the CFISD leadership team, the committee hosted a series of meetings throughout June and July to review current security initiatives that are already in place as well as explore what additional layers could be implemented for the district this year. Featuring roundtable discussions with experts as well as input from all campus principals and the Community Leadership Committee, the meetings resulted in an action plan focused on prevention of, identification and intervention of and response to potential security threats during a time when the nationwide focus is on school safety.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s School and Firearm Safety Action Plan, released on May 30, was used by the committee as a baseline to review school safety and implement recommended strategies.

“During my tenure as a school superintendent, our biggest challenge in educational leadership has evolved from simply educating students to protecting them,” said Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent of schools. “In light of more violent tragedies that occurred inside our nation’s schools last year, our safety and

security committee brought a renewed focus to this crucial topic and developed a plan that we feel will best protect our students and staff in 2018-2019 and beyond.”

Cy-Ranch Claims Victory Cup for 2017-2018 School Year Cypress Ranch High School won three endof-year awards from the CFISD athletic department, including the Victory Cup for the most success during competition throughout the 2017-2018 school year. The awards were presented July 31 at the Berry Center during a coaches’ in-service day.

Cypress Ranch earned top honors in both academic achievement and community impact. The Victory Cup is a measurement of competitive excellence from all of the combined sports. Cypress Ranch claimed the Victory Cup for the fourth season in a row.

Cypress Ranch captured two state championships (girls’ wrestling and alumna Kaitlyn Banas in girls’ wrestling) during the 2017-2018 school year. In addition, two teams reached their respective state tournaments (team tennis and baseball), while representatives in tennis, boys’ wrestling and track and field also competed at the state level.

“It was an incredible feeling to win the Victory Cup,” said Gene Johnson, Cypress Ranch campus athletic coordinator and head football coach. “I have a great deal of respect for our athletes and coaches in accomplishing this feat for the fourth year in a row. I especially appreciate the award when I think of the quality of coaches and athletes that we have had to compete against the last four years in Cy-Fair ISD. I am extremely proud of our athletes and coaches.”

The academic achievement and academic improvement awards are based on the A/B honor roll percentage rates and failure/success percentage rates tracked by the department each formal grading period for each University Interscholastic League sport on each campus.

The end-of-year award for academic improvement from the CFISD athletic department is based on which campus exhibited the most improvement from the previous school year in the A/B honor roll percentage rates and failure/success percentage rates, which are tracked each six weeks for each University Interscholastic League sport on each campus.

Academic achievement goes to the campus which performed the best cumulatively in both categories throughout the school year.

Cypress Ranch placed first, followed by runner-up Bridgeland High School.

Academic improvement is based on which campus exhibited the most improvement in both categories from the previous school year.

Community Impact goes to the campus athletic program which accumulates the most documented hours of community service for the school year. Cypress Ranch placed first in the category of Community Impact.

Cy-Ranch HS Baseball Standouts Compete in All-American Showcases Cypress Ranch High School rising seniors Matt Thompson and J.J. Goss were honored as being among the top-rated baseball players in the nation for the Class of 2019, as the two right-handed pitchers participated in All-American showcase games in July.

Thompson participated in the Under Armour All-American Baseball Game on July 20 at historic Wrigley Field in Chicago. Playing for the American team, Thompson pitched the fifth inning and notched a clean 1-2-3 frame, recording two ground outs and one strikeout.

The American staff struck out 14 in the 8-2 win.

Cypress Ranch High School senior J.J. Goss pitched in the 16th Annual Perfect Game All-American Classic on Aug. 12 at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. Goss and fellow Cypress Ranch righthanded pitcher Matt Thompson, were among 50 of the nation’s top baseball players in the Class of 2019 to participate in the showcase, with Goss striking out two in his one inning of work.

He was then joined by Goss at the 16th Annual Perfect Game AllAmerican Classic on Aug. 12 at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. Goss appeared first, taking the mound in the fifth inning for the West team and recording a 1-2-3 frame with one strikeout.

Thompson – also on the West team – pitched the sixth inning and struck out two. He was the game’s winning pitcher as the West broke a tie in the bottom of the sixth on the way to its 4-2 win. Ten West pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts in the two-hit performance.

“This has been one of the best showcases I've ever been to,” Thompson told MLB.com. “It's over the top. Coming out today and

playing our last summer game ever, it was kind of sad, but it's been a great experience. This summer's been amazing.”

Goss and Thompson are both verbally committed to Texas A&M University and coming off 2018 seasons in which they helped lead Cypress Ranch to the Class 6A state tournament.

CFISD Summer Feeding Program Deemed a Success

by Patricia Hudson When school lets out in May, some children face the bleak prospect of going without breakfast and lunch until school resumes again in August. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Nutrition Services ensures that children 18 years old and younger are provided nutritious Seamless Summer Option (SSO) meals, at no cost to the child, Monday through Thursday throughout the summer. SSO is a U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition program administered in Texas by the state’s department of agriculture.

“The SSO program is a great way for us to provide access to meals for our students during the summer months,” said Darin Crawford, Nutrition Services Director. “Kids need good nutrition to fuel their summer activities and we are thrilled to be able to continue to offer school meals during the long summer break.”

As CFISD prepares to reopen for the school year, PinPointe Magazines - Cypress contacted the CFISD Nutrition office to find out how many children in need had been served this summer.

“Through the Summer Feeding Program, we served around 226,000 meals to children in 28 sites in the Cypress-Fairbanks area. About 60% of these meals were lunches, and the rest were breakfasts.

This number is comparable to the amount of meals that we served last year. I feel that our summer meals program was a success.

However, I always want to increase the amount of meals that we serve to children in our community,” reported Nutrition Service Director, Darin Crawford.

Texans First Year GM Brian Gaine will try and right the ship after last year’s disappointing season.

Q: You know a lot of people are going to focus in on the QB position and the comeback with Deshaun Watson. Where do you feel he is physically and mentally?

A: Sure, well without getting into specifics of his injury I would like to say he’s a great example to follow. As it relates to the player, and the talent and what his future holds he’s a young promising player with a lot of upside. You see that this guy is a unique worker and his preparation is outstanding. He’s a good teammate with poise and presence in the huddle and also in the locker room with the guys. e other thing about him is he’s a great character guy. is is a good person who thoroughly enjoys football, and hopefully, the combination between the physical and the intangible profile will give Deshaun a great chance to ascend.

Q: Your predecessor gave up a lot to get Deshaun, and given what we’ve seen on and off the field, many would say the price was well worth it....but as you approached your first year as the GM of the Texans, how did you address the draft differently knowing you had no 1st or 2nd round draft picks ?

A: Yeah, so we had some unique challenges as it related to the player acquisition process because we were not going to be able to take an at-bat for the first approximate 60 picks, but what we had was basically a normal offseason. I would tell you that we still went through our draft procedures, free agent procedures, and acted “as if ” we were going to have that first or second round pick. We had a unique situation where we had four picks in the top 100-105 selections because we had three picks in the third round, with an early fourth round pick. We knew we’d still get good players. As it relates to free agency, you know it’s really a needs-driven process.

You are going to pursue players that are going to fill some team needs that you have to address and we did add some pieces on the offensive line and some pieces in the secondary that allowed us to go into the draft. We took the best available player on the board when Redd from Stanford came up, and we felt regardless of the position he was the best available player. So with the ability to get those four players whom we perceived were top 100 players we still felt like we were going to have a very good opportunity to improve the team even without a 1st or 2nd round pick.

Q: When you look at the combination of Clowney & Watt, is it hard not to sit and daydream about the havoc the could create on the field when both healthy?

A: So we are pleased naturally to have both players on our team as anybody would. You know the first thing that comes to mind is “wow” we have to play in a very tough division and those two players amongst many other guys. e AFC South is greatly improved since the year that I left and came back so, in my mind, I’m thinking these guys have to go get Andrew Luck, Marcus Mariota, Blake Bortles.

You know the Jaguars went to the AFC Championship Game, the Titans reached the playoffs and Andrew Luck is coming back so the Colts will be improved. is is going to be a very difficult season but we’re ready for the challenge and those two players are definitely going to be impactful for us as it relates to playing the quarterbacks in our division and on our schedule.

Q: The division has gotten tougher. How do you approach the division now with the emergence of Blake Bortles, and improved play of Mariota and Luck’s return? Is the approach to just win the division and everything will work out?

A: Obviously in the division, it’s one game at a time and having a singular focus and purpose. You know health was a big issue for us last year. I understand that and maybe the season didn’t go as planned, but with the emergence of our quarterback, and guys returning from injury, I’m optimistic about a positive season.You know for me it’s all about one game at a time. We spend a lot of time trying to put mechanisms in place this offseason to help improve the durability and health and wellness of our football team through the sports science and sports performance elements through our nutritionists. We addressed the equipment that we use in our weight room facility, how we train, the players’ recovery process, their wellness and overall health. We are hoping that all of those things will impact their availability for us to stay on the field for long periods of time.

have to have prototypical standards and you have to have minimum requirements for every position. To this day I can hear him in my ear reminding me about height, weight, speed, the physical parameters for whatever position it might be. at ultimately leads to putting the type of team you physically want to look like. So there are constant reminders of those times and places where we had those conversations.

Bill was a world-class motivator. He could personalize and instinctively reach people and find out what motivated you as a player

or staff member. I can remember when we signed Cameron Wake in Miami and we got him on board for his services, and I was all happy, and then he quickly reminded me that we needed to now go find another great player. at kind of reset and recalibrated my thoughts like “he’s exactly right” we need to go find another guy.

Q: You witnessed in Dallas what a strong running game can do for a young QB. What could the running game do for the Texans when you look at that position right now?

A: Sure, so you know the running game more or less probably didn’t go as planned for us last year, but any running game is going to help a young developing quarterback. In our specific situation, we had injuries on the offensive line and we had some attrition issues as it relates to the roster. at was a major focus for us to address via free agency and during the draft this offseason. We’re hoping that with the personnel that we added to that group, it will have a positive impact on our running game. Foreman is doing everything he can to return, so we won’t rush things. Alfred Blue is a good complementary runner for us where he’s an inside runner that gives us some size and strength along with special teams value. We are hoping for a bounceback season from Lamar Miller especially with those upgrades on the offensive line position.

Q: Last thing Brian, you came up under Bill Parcells. What is your biggest takeaway from those years with Bill? Do you have a favorite Parcells story?

A: Well there’s many of them. First and foremost, I obviously was very thankful for the opportunity given to learn under Bill who’s a HOF coach, but there are so many things. One of the major things I took away from Bill was how to build a roster. You PinPointe Magazine

CFISD Holds Sixth Annual Back-to-School Expo Article and Photos By Patricia Hudson

The sixth annual CFISD Back-to-School Expo was held on Saturday, August 18, at the Berry Center. The event provided helpful resources for thousands of new students, parents and prospective employees. A host of student volunteers representing CFISD Key Clubs, National Honor Society, and HOSA were posted throughout the building, fielding questions and directing the crowd at the four-hour event. Those looking to register incoming students were pleasantly surprised to find ample assistance, with CFISD personnel and volunteers stationed at tables and copy machines throughout one of the largest spaces at the Berry Center complex. Students were given an opportunity to get athletic physicals, while others cringed or cried as they received immunizations. The Cy Fair Fire Department held demonstrations for administering CPR and handed out plastic fire hats to junior fire fighters. Community groups such as the Langham Creek YMCA, The Girl Scouts, and Cy Hope lined the entry way halls, sharing information about their organizations. Orderly lines snaked around and through meeting rooms, as fresh fruit and vegetables were distributed. Judging from its length, the most popular line led to the giveaways of school supplies, including the coveted clear backpacks required for CFISD middle and high school students this year.

Behind Alzheimer’s disease and drug overdoses, suicide is the fastest growing cause of death in the United States and is the second leading cause of death for ages 15-34. Within Texas, Montgomery County has seen the second highest increase in the state at 16%. Local non-profit Shield Bearer Counseling Centers wants you to know it can be prevented.

“There is a stigma that surrounds the mental and emotional pain that leads to suicide. We are encouraging an open conversation about mental health and how to get help for yourself and others considering suicide. We have to talk about the issues to heal and move forward in a healthy and productive way,” states Shield Bearer Executive Director Roy Wooten.
