Come and visit our beautiful woodland…
EPPING FOREST BURIAL PARK
the natural choice
Epping Forest Burial Park has two stunning award-winning ceremonial buildings for funerals and memorial services – a place where a life that has ended can be honoured and remembered amidst the timeless beauty of nature. Epping Forest Burial Park is a beautiful 52-acre mature woodland, situated in North Weald in Essex and offering families who have been bereaved a completely different experience. Our Woodland Hall is suitable for services of all faiths as well as secular funerals, while the Gathering Hall provides space for receptions, with catering facilities if required. With a minimum of two hours available for each funeral, compassionate and experienced staff are always on site and able to offer free and impartial advice. Epping Forest Burial Park offers families the freedom to personalise each ceremony, with access for the public 365 days a year. Plots may be selected and purchased anywhere within the beautiful bluebell woodland. This can be done in advance of the time of need as part of planning for one’s own future, or by the family when arranging the funeral. To find out more about this remarkable place, or to request a brochure and price list, please telephone the reception on 01992 523863, or visit the website www.woodlandburialparks.co.uk

A Warm Welcome Wanstead is a traditional members’ club where a warm welcome awaits members and guests alike. Visitors and societies are able to play on weekdays and on weekend afternoons and can be assured of an enjoyable round of golf on a superbly-maintained course. Post-play, reflect on your game over a few drinks or a meal in the comfort of our well-appointed clubhouse.
The course is a challenging 18 holes, set in beautiful parkland, bordered by Wanstead Park and the lower reaches of Epping Forest, yet only a few miles from Docklands and the City of London. We have been described as ‘Golf’s best kept secret for over 100 years’. However, we are a popular venue all year round and see groups returning year after year.
Wanstead Golf Club
Club History The club was founded as Wanstead Park Golf Club and the original nine-hole course was designed by Tom Dunn and laid out by greenkeeper James MacPherson, formerly of St Andrews and Mitcham Golf Club, who became the club’s first professional. The opening ceremony, on Saturday, 25th November, 1893, was held in the newlyrefurbished clubhouse, which was originally the stables of the former Wanstead House. The course was leased on land owned by Lord Cowley. Approximately one hundred and thirty members, mainly local residents, were recruited, forty of whom were ladies. Initially no play was permitted on Sundays. After five years the course was redesigned to make 14 holes,
06 Wanstead Golf Club
with the first four holes being played twice to make 18. In 1913 ‘the field’ was added to give a further three holes and extended to four holes in 1919. Since then there have been a variety of changes to the course design but The Lake Hole (16th) still remains the signature hole. Driving over the large grassed dip which traverses the 1st and the 18th fairways, one is reminded that this was formerly part of the wine cellars of the locally famous Wanstead House. Just before the commencement of the 1914-1918 war the trustees of the Cowley Estates were contemplating selling off the land for housing development and so in 1920 a group of members and local residents formed
Wanstead Sports Ground Limited and raised sufficient funds to purchase the land from the trustees so that the land could be retained ‘for sporting use only’ which ensured the continuance of golf, cricket, tennis and, later, bowls. With the formation of Wanstead Sports Ground Ltd, it was decided to rename the club Wanstead Golf Club. Over the years the layout of the clubhouse has changed dramatically. The present entrance and foyer were originally open and members drove their horses and carriages through to tether them where the putting green is now. In 2005 a further major refurbishment
was carried out which now provides a comfortable bar, terrace and first-class facilities for dining and dancing suitable for all types of celebratory functions. Sir Winston Churchill was an Honorary Member and to date the club has provided three Ryder Cup professionals, Percy Alliss, Alan Dailey and Lionel Platts, from its ranks. Other former members of note are Jean Hetherington, who won the 1946 Ladies Open Championship, Darren Lee who won the Amateur Medal in the 1996 British Open and Simon Khan, who is a leading player on the European Tour.

The Course Our well-maintained, attractive yet challenging course has hosted many of the major events in the Essex county calendar and is the home of the prestigious Armitage Cup. Despite its relatively short length at 6014 yards, there are many interesting and memorable holes to play. The uphill mid-iron to the two-tier 5th green, holing out on the enormous 8th green, the wedge to the fortress-like 12th green with its steeply sloping banks, the 150-yard
carry over the lake to hit the 16th green, the tee shot through an avenue of trees on the 7th and the approach shot over a diagonal threat of four bunkers on the 11th all provide a true test of golfing ability. Some excellent new practice facilities have been developed between the 6th fairway and 8th green. In addition, golfers are able to warm up on the short game area close to the first tee, in the practice nets and on the putting green. The course is easy to walk and there any many pleasant vistas to enjoy on the way round.

Pro’s Tips, Hole by Hole Prepare for your visit to Wanstead by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our Club Professional. Hole 1 - Earl’s Cellars - 351 yards par 4 A drive with a fairway wood will put your ball in a safe position from the tee, eliminating the large bunker on the left and trees on the right. This will leave a short to mid-iron approach. Missing short is safe. Long and wide of green will create a difficult recovery. Hole 2 - Drive In - 433 yards par 4 (ladies par 5) A drive left of centre will allow the ball to get maximum distance from the tee. Anything hit well right may be
blocked out for the second shot. An accurate longer iron approach may be required to find the centre of this small green. Hole 3 - Roding High - 395 yards par 4 Drive to the correct fairway on the left and be rewarded with a much simpler approach shot. Any drive to the right will make it almost impossible to find the green with the second shot. Once on the green this is no pushover as there is a severe slope from back right to front left. Hole 4 - Spring - 406 yards par 4 This is a tough hole because of its length and the angle of the green. Hit the fairway and have a straightforward approach. Take note of pin placement. Club selection is important to make sure you get the ball onto the top level of the green. Wanstead Golf Club

Pro’s Tips, Hole by Hole Continued... Hole 5 - Outfield - 406 yards par 4 (Par 5 Ladies) Only a drive left of centre guarantees a clear view of the green. However, do not drift too far to the left as the Sump awaits. The second shot is severely uphill requiring almost two clubs more than normal. Once you reach the green you have to contend with the extreme back-tofront slope. Hole 6 - Bubbles Ahead - 352 yards par 4 Aim at the bunker and try to carry the ball around 200 yards through the air. This will leave a short approach shot to a downhill target, an obvious birdie opportunity. Hole 7 - Mulberry - 495 yards par 5 A tough tee shot from the back tee but, if negotiated, a standard three-shot hole. There is no option for safety
from the tee as the important element is to clear the trees. From here a wood or hybrid that avoids the cross bunker should leave a short pitch to the green. Hole 8 - Peahen Pond - 411 yards par 4 Only a well-hit drive, preferably right of centre, will leave a chance of reaching this green in two. An accurate approach is required as missing left or right results in sand. There is a possible four-club adjustment from a front or back flag on the long, two-tier green. Hole 9 - Oak Hill - 180 yards par 3 A par 3 well bunkered at both the front and the sides. Try to play to a distance yardage that is middle to back in measurement and if necessary putt back to a front flag. This is a tough hole when the pin is at the front.

Pro’s Tips, Hole by Hole Continued... Hole 10 - Mornington Dip - 377 yards par 4 A good drive right of centre leaves a short to mid-iron approach which needs to be coming into the flag on the right to allow for a very difficult sloping right-to-left green. Beware of the two bunkers right and left. This green can offer some of the fastest putts on the course. Hole 11 - Snares Brook - 369 yards par 4 A fairly generous amount of room from the tee means either side of the fairway provides a routine approach shot. For once, a longer approach is advisable as this will avoid the four bunkers positioned short of the green. Hole 12 - Plateau - 328 yards par 4 The best way to play this hole is by selecting a club that will hit the ball about 200 yards over the left edge of the tree line. This will set up a short approach to the green
allowing the player to hit a full shot left of centre which is the advised route. Any shot right of the green will make recovery almost impossible. Once again flag position can make this a really difficult hole. Hole 13 - Short - 165 yards par 3 Allow one club less for the downhill shot but don’t forget the wind direction. Any off-centre shot to the green has a chance of falling into a bunker. Most shots or putts from the front level to the back will break right to left. Hole 14 - Woe Bunkers - 422 yards par 4 (ladies par 5) This is a tough hole requiring a long, accurate left-ofcentre drive. This will leave a long approach shot that should be aimed at the left side of the narrow entrance to the green. Any shot short and right falls away into the rough or the bunker to the right of green. Wanstead Golf Club
Pro’s Tips, Hole by Hole Continued... Hole 15 - The Rocket - 185 yards par 3 Select your club carefully. Only a perfectly-hit shot will find the correct level of this three-tier green. Any ball not on the putting surface almost guarantees a bogey or worse.
Hole 18 - Tennis Elbow - 313 yards par 4 Choose to lay up or go over the gulley. As long as the second shot is from a flat, level lie the shot to find the green is fairly straightforward. A ball that ends well right on the first section of fairway does make for a much more difficult shot back to this green.
Hole 16 - Harvey’s Tap - 150 yards par 3 Select a club to put your ball in the centre of the green. A safer line may be to aim towards the bunkers on the left. Once on the green a sloping putt is usually expected. Hole 17 - Cricketers - 276 yards par 4 This is a risk and reward hole. For most, a driver at the green is the choice but a safe option is to take a hybrid or fairway wood to the middle of the fairway which leaves a fairly short pitch.
