Welcome Eltham Warren Golf Club, founded in 1890, is one of England’s oldest nine-hole courses, and is situated on the outskirts of Eltham in South East London.

Our course was designed by renowned architect and five-time Open champion James Braid and has a local reputation for being maintained in top condition throughout the year, with many interesting features such as strategically placed ponds, ditches, bunkers and rare mature trees, some of which are centuries old.

Although relatively short in comparison to some courses at 5,850 yards, Eltham Warren provides a test for even the most experienced golfer, as the separate tees for the back nine and some narrow fairways require that accuracy must always be placed at a premium. In recent years we have been proud to host Kent County matches, being the only nine-hole course in Kent to have done this.

We are a small club but a very friendly one and new members are made to feel instantly at home. That warm welcome is also extended during the week to visitors and societies, who are encouraged to discover all that we have to offer.

History The following extract is taken from “Eltham Warren Golf Club 1890 –1990” by past President F.H Seeley, and is reproduced here by kind permission.

In 1890 a group of friends who, for some time, had permission to practice golf on an expanse of land called the Warren field on the eastern end of Eltham village, decided to form a club. They met on 7th May 1890 in the house of Mr Walter Richardson and formed Eltham Golf Club with a membership of eight.

The Club became sub-tenants of Mr Edwards at an annual rental of £10 and a 6-hole course was laid out.

A further field, the present practice ground area, extended the playing area to a more generous 17 acres and in 1894 a very-cramped 9-hole course was laid out.

Not surprisingly this soon proved to be a dangerous experiment and the course went back to six holes.

Due to nearby development the golf course was pushed further east and extended until, by 1910 or so, it occupied more or less its present site.

In spite of doubts about the future – particularly with regard to tenure of the land – the infant club grew rapidly. By early 1894 the agreed membership had been increased to 30. Some of the newcomers lived as far away as Lewisham, quite a long journey in those days, and needed somewhere to change, but it was not until the middle of 1896 that a satisfactory solution was found: then a room was rented from Mr Hands at 2 Elm Villas (Southend Crescent) at a rent of £5 5s 0d per quarter, and it was soon further arranged that tea and light refreshments should be made available.

History (continued) Further expansion of membership and the formation of a Ladies Club rendered this room quite inadequate; the next move was to 14 The Broadway where it seems that at least three rooms, one large enough to form a changing room with thirty lockers, must have been rented and meals and drinks were available. This in turn was rapidly outgrown and the next move was to a whole house, Montrose, in Eltham High Street, which was rented at £45 per annum. This, then referred to in minutes as the Club House, was the home of the club until the first clubhouse on the present site was built in 1912.

During the first few years the founder members of the club and those who joined them soon after seem to have made and tended the course themselves using their own shovels, scythes, sickles and lawn mowers, but expansion from the original small six hole layout made this impractical and investment was made on a greens cutter and a fairways mower with horse (the horse cost £10).

Major refurbishment was undertaken to the clubhouse in the early 1950s, but the building was devastated by fire on Saturday, 2nd June, 1956. The Lady Captain’s Day supper that year was by candlelight in the blackened shell of the dining room.

A grand new clubhouse was built, which included a billiard room and ladies’ room upstairs, as they are today, and incorporated the old covered patio and the card room in the much larger lounge which has changed very little since it was built.

Improvements, such as the installation of a sprinkler system for the course, have continued. Parts of the course may have been eaten away by road developments such as the Rochester Way Relief Road over the years, but our club is still here, stronger than ever and continues to thrive, with membership growing.

The Course The Club was founded in 1890, and the present mature parkland course was designed by the great course architect James Braid.

Measuring 5,850 yards from the men’s competition tees and 5,276 yards from the ladies’ tees, it has pars of 69 and 72 respectively.

From our yellow tees the course measures 5,603 yards, making it a fair and enjoyable test for any level of golfer, with the back nine being slightly the longer of the two, having a par of 35.

Far from simply playing each hole twice, the different teeing grounds available on each hole give a fresh perspective to the outward and inward nines, necessitating thought with club selection and even the shape of shot required for success.

And it would be a mistake to think that Eltham Warren is an easy course to play because of its size. A premium is placed on course management skills and with most of the fairways lined with trees either side the way to score well is to keep on the short grass.

The greens are quite small so accuracy is required to hit them with the approach shot. And the 5th green has three tiers, so be careful!

The Course (continued) A round of golf can be as much about appreciating nature at its best as enjoying a sporting pursuit and take a moment after holing out on the 8th green to look back at the wonderful views over the rest of the course.

There are some tough holes, notably the fourth, which is Stroke Index 1 and a 450-yard par-4 from the back tees with out of bounds all the way down the right side.

The unofficial signature hole is the 298-yard par4 5th, with the sculptured fairway giving a different bounce every time and a pond forcing you to lay up in front of the green.

The seventh is what distinguishes Eltham Warren from other nine-hole courses. It is a long par 3 during your front nine (244 yards from the back tees) then after a short walk further back it’s a par 4 second time around at 297 yards.

The Professional and the Pro Shop The Head Professional at Eltham Warren is Gary Brett, who joined the club in October 1996 having previously been head teaching professional at the Bob Torrance Golf School at Selsdon Park.

Gary can cater for all your everyday golfing needs such as balls and tees. You won’t find better value locally for golf clothing. Famous for his own fashion sense, Gary will guide you as to what to wear, and what not to! He always has superb offers on shirts, waterproofs and shoes.

Club repairs are undertaken and regrips performed which can make a tired set of irons feel like new again.

The Pro Shop is also the place to go if you wish to hire a buggy, though numbers are limited so it is best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. There are also some pull trolleys available.

Practice Facilities Eltham Warren Golf Club is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to give them the opportunity to become as proficient at this great game of golf as their talent and application allows.

As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our head professional, Gary Brett, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of the game into strengths.

There is a two-bay covered practice area straddling the 2nd and 3rd holes which is available to members and to those having golf lessons and where players bring their own balls.

For those whose heart sinks every time an errant shot finds its way into the sand, the good news is that the club is hoping to add a practice bunker to this area in 2012. Some instruction from our professional allied to a little dedication working on this new-found skill should add the words “sand save� to your golfing vocabulary.

Other areas of the short game can be perfected on the chipping green by the first tee and on the practice putting green close to the clubhouse.

For those short of time there are two practice nets behind the first tee to get loose before hitting your opening shot over The Warren.

Membership and How to Join Eltham Warren prides itself on having an active membership with a full schedule of competitions for men, ladies, seniors and juniors aimed at players of all standards.

We also have a busy and varied social calendar with events for all of the family.

Membership is open to all upon application – you do not need to know anyone already at the club. In fact many

new members find themselves quickly part of a regular group of friends.

At present we have a limited number of vacancies for membership from the weekly equivalent of less than ÂŁ15 for Five Day Membership - compare that with a regular green fee at your local municipal course and Pay & Play.

Unlike some other clubs there is currently no joining fee to pay either. Plus, you get use of our facilities, including our well-stocked bar serving a varied selection of real ales at great prices, and superb quality lunches and bar snacks.

Competitive golfers can achieve an official CONGU handicap, recognised worldwide, and play in regular competitions both with their fellow members and against other clubs.

It is worth remembering that at present for a limited time there is no joining fee payable in any membership category. We also have a monthly payment plan available for subscriptions.

Five Day Membership – playing Monday to Friday.

There are a number of membership options available: Full Membership – allowing play seven days a week.

Intermediate Membership – for golfers aged 18 to 21.

Allows play any time Monday to Friday and after 12pm at weekends.

Associate Membership – playing Monday to Friday anytime and weekends after 12pm in winter and 1pm summer.

Junior Membership – for young golfers aged 16 to 18 and under 16. Allows play at any time except for weekends before 12.30pm winter and 2.30pm summer.

Young golfers are warmly welcomed and our very reasonably-priced junior subscriptions permit play at any time except for weekends before 12.30pm in the winter and 2.30pm in the summer.

We have a busy fixtures calendar of junior competitions, both internally and in knock-out competitions with surrounding clubs. The youngsters play in the Langley Park Youth League, the Shooters Hill Cup and the Kent Junior Foursomes.

There are many trophies to play for, including silverware donated by the club professional, the steward and the course manager.

One of the most keenly contested is the Town-Bishop Cup

which goes to the best performing youngster over the 12 monthly medals held throughout the year. Our course puts a premium on course management skills rather than an ability to hit the ball into the next county and because of this offers the perfect grounding for a junior learning the game.

Our teaching professional, Gary Brett, is particularly adept at passing on his skills to youngster golfers. He instructs at local schools and also holds coaching sessions at the club. Ring him for details on 0208 850 4477 (option 2).

Visitors Visitors are very welcome here at Eltham Warren on weekdays, and you will be assured of a warm reception, particularly in our friendly clubhouse, where you can enjoy a bite to eat and a drink after your game.

We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible.

In common with other clubs we do insist on a minimum standard of smart casual dress at all times. Blue denim is not permitted and correct golf shoes must always be worn on the course.

Our standard green fee rate permits play all day subject to availability. Discounts are available to those able to play at less busy times in the afternoon, to Member’s guests and to holders of the County Card.

Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course.

The Clubhouse At Eltham Warren we take pride not only in our picturesque course, but also our well-stocked bar serving a selection of draught lagers and beers, including regular guest ales from the famous Greene King brewery.

A tasty selection of lunches and snacks is available, from toasted paninis and our exclusive club sandwich. The club caterers Debbie and Ian also provide superb food for our club functions and society meetings.

The clubhouse is the perfect place to sit down and relax and relive the triumphs of your round or conversely come up with a cunning plan to better par next time. Visitors will always find our friendly membership happy to give them tips on how to enjoy a round to the full.

We have a varied social calendar at the club, with regular events for members and their family and friends. These include traditional celebrations such as those to mark St George’s Day and St Patrick’s Day, Burns Night and our ever-popular London Night.

There is a very nice ground-floor patio and also a balcony which both make very pleasant spots in summer to sit with a cooling drink and watch people complete their rounds.

How to Find Us Situated less than half a mile east of Eltham town centre on the A210 Bexley Road, with easy access from the A2 at Falconwood, we are approximately 15 minutes from the Dartford Crossing on the M25.

For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is SE9 2PE. Directions From the M25 Leave the motorway at Junction 2, heading west on the

A2 towards London. Remain on this road for about seven miles until you see a sign for Local Traffic and Eltham and then take the left filter at Riefield Road near to Falconwood rail station. At this junction there is a no-left-turn restriction but after turning right there is a turning spot outside the station. Continue back down Riefield Road and at the traffic lights turn right into Bexley Road. The entrance to the club is about half a mile up on the right.

From London and elsewhere From the west, head towards Eltham on the A20/A210 or the A205/A210, from the north on the A205/Well Hall Road or from the south on the A20, A211 or A208/Court

Road. Follow the A210 Bexley Road east away from the town and the entrance to the golf club is signposted on the left.

Public transport The nearest railway stations are Eltham and Falconwood, which are both just over a mile away. Frequent train services run from these stations to London Charing Cross, Victoria and Cannon Street, with journey time being around 25 minutes. Services run west to Dartford and other Kent towns.
