Silicone, superstars & a new holiday Blitz & Shitz Raziel

To-Do List: Feb 25 So some fags have decided that Feb 25 is a holiday now, and I’m going with it because there are beads involved, and even though these ones go around your neck, not up your ass, it’s still going to be a good time.

T

HE SILICONE DIARIES IS AN MTF transformation story that reveals everything that comes in the middle. From shemale porn, to Mexican doctors who will “suck the man out of your face,” to Tommy Lee’s big cock (a staple in every trans journey). Nina Arsenault is glamorous, vulnerable and funny. When discussing her pornographic past (which paid for her cosmetic surgeries) she admits, “I learned how to jerk off for eight hours for my femininity!” In her one-woman show, she intimately shares, as one would to the pages of one’s diary, the highs (Ativan and champagne) and lows (botched surgery and risk of death) of her evolution from a boy who wanted nothing but to grow up and be a mannequin to a woman who is so close to achieving that goal that if she didn’t blink, you wouldn’t believe she was real. Before seeing this play I couldn’t grasp what it would be like to feel you’re the opposite gender than who you are biologically. Thanks to Nina’s humorous and tragic revelations, the pain, frustration and beauty feel a lot closer. The Silicone Diaries runs at The Cultch until Feb 25.

Halleloo! Shangela might be my new favourite queen. What a sweetheart. Girl was flippin’ her

hair more than Blue Ivy in her surrogate’s belly! She killed it with her performances at Celebrities during the Drag Superstar competition. What a class act. Too many queens act like the cunts they wish they had, so it’s refreshing when a pro can walk into a dressing room and put everyone at ease, introducing herself to her gawkers and making them feel like old friends. The competition lagged whenever the competitors weren’t performing and had to improvise in front of the crowd. They only seemed comfortable in their stilettos doing moves they’d rehearsed, but there were some prime moments that made up for it, like Iona Whipp impersonating Liza Minnelli. I knew then she was

the one who deserved the trip to NYC to party with the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race, reppin’ Vancouver. Congrats, girl, you did us proud! For video footage of the show, including my interview with Shangela, check out xtra.ca.

PS Mama made some boo-boos. In my last column I misspelled Nicki Ravange’s name (in my defence, it is pronounced Revenge), and I also said that it was Anida Tythole’s first time on stage when it was actually Kitty Litur’s (and the bitch is so good, I still can’t believe it). Sorry, ladies! I’ll never waste while I’m writed again . . .

Mardi Gras is coming to the Davie Village! Get your $10 wristbands (all proceeds go to Friends for Life) at Priape or Little Sister’s and skip the lines to Celebrities, 1181, Fountainhead, Junction, Numbers, Oasis and PumpJack. Since 1181 doesn’t have cover, they will be making a cash donation to FFL for everyone who comes in wearing a wristband. Fountainhead will also be giving 25 percent of all food sales to the charity. This is fabulous! Gays are fabulous! No other culture in the world gives back like we do, and don’t you fucking forget it.

A few blocks from the Village, Five Sixty is launching their new

Saturday, “Poniup.” DJ Adam Dreaddy is behind the sexy madness. Speaking about the recent Five Sixty drama, he tells me, “I can honestly say they are not homophobic. They don’t want the bar to be labelled gay but want to have a gay night. When they say they’re “not a gay bar,” they are trying to allow straights to open their minds for other nights. Sometimes gays don’t allow themselves to think about the bigger picture and scream homophobia when they feel unwanted.” Gay, straight, white, black or blue. You ready to ride that Poni?

3

Last but certainly not least, everyone’s favourite dress-up mashup is back with Queer Bash: True Blood Vamps vs Hollywood Glam-ps! Oscar fever has hit The Cobalt. Drag queen and king performances and all your favourite East Van party monsters vampin’ and glammin’ it up all night. $10 advance, $15 at the door.
