2nd Annual Marine Industry Awards

April 19, 2018 | Sponsorship Package

TURNING THE TIDE

We have always turned to the sea for our livelihood. Communities have been built and fortunes won and lost on her bounty. This continues today as we find new and innovative ways to utilize our greatest natural advantage. As true as this is, we barely scratch the surface in capturing the many stories of our marine heritage, and no single event recognizes the ongoing value of our marine industry as a whole. This new awards recognition program will accomplish this. Although the words Turning the Tide literally describe an ocean event, they are also a metaphor for a change of momentum in events, lives and the fortunes of businesses and communities. Both these contexts make Turning the Tide the ideal phrase for recognizing leadership and success in today’s industry and for bringing more defining moments in our marine history to light. As a Turning the Tide supporter, you will help us accomplish both of these goals, drawing attention to our province’s strength and vitality, past and present.

OUR MARINE SECTORS Our marine indus tr y is b roa dly co ns id ere d to include these overlapping sectors: Shipping and Ferry Transpor tation, Maritime Logistic s, Commercial Ser vices, Science and Te c h n o l o g y, M a r i n e Safety and Security, Naval and Defense, O f f shore I n d u s t r i e s , Po r t s a n d Terminals; Fishing and Fish Proces sing and Marine Education and Training.

Industry Leadership and Excellence Award Our marine industry is united by common challenges to future growth and success. These challenges are not necessarily unique to the marine industry but their impacts and the solutions found often are. Industry leaders challenge accepted norms and tackle head-on those obstacles to future growth and success. Their work results in breakthroughs that can be as tangible as a technological innovation or as intangible as the new thinking that triggers a paradigm-shift in relationships within the industry. Leaders set new standards of excellence which remind us all that making the effort to do a lot of things exceptionally well is indeed rewarding.

The nature of a dynamic marine industry is such that the challenges shift with the sands of time. Major challenges before our industry today include: •

environmental stewardship, sustainability, and conservation; technological innovation; • marine safety and security; • market development; training, human resource development and succession planning •

This award recognizes leadership, accomplishment, and excellence in one or more of these areas to the benefit of our entire industry. Firms whose consistency and demonstrated commitment to operational excellence sets new standards and challenges us all to do better are also considered.

He or she may or may not be a big personality; what is certain is that he or she is a proven big thinker with a big heart.

This award is given to acknowledge and celebrate our rich marine histor y. The recipient may be an individual, organization or community. Honorees may be recognized for a singular accomplishment that can now be seen as having turned the tides of our history or for long-term dedication to positive change. Representing the strengths upon which our unique culture and sense of place are built, their stories are a part of our lesser known history and deserve wider recognition and a place in the public consciousness.

HOME FROM THE SEA FOUNDATION

Funds from this initiative will help support the programs of the HFTS Foundation. In doing so, you will play a role in supporting rural community revitalization. This year will also choose a second marine related charity to recieve funds from this initiative.

The Home from The Sea Foundation (HFTSF) was originally formed to build a memorial to the men and boys who lost their lives in the Great Sealing Disaster of 1914. In doing so, the HFTSF realized that many of the stories that have shaped our marine heritage remain untold. Now that the Sealers Memorial has been completed to great acclaim, the Foundation is focusing on something less tangible but no less important: the need to ensure that more of our amazing marine history is illuminated and shared. Intangible cultural heritage and interactive experiences are significant defining features of this province’s tourism success. HFTSF is committed to working with the community of Elliston to recapture its stories and repurpose them to build a new economic base for the community. HFTSF is also committed to identifying and shedding more light on lesser known defining moments in our marine history that have province-wide significance. This important work strengthens our collective identity and sense of place and helps create foundations on which other communities can build.
