A simple and empowering way for us all to fund frontline mental health and addictions programs 1

“Mental illness is not a personal failure. In fact, if there is failure, it is to be found in the way we have responded to people with mental and brain disorders.

MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDERS The A Dollar A Day Foundation was established to raise funds to close the gap between the availability of frontline mental health and addictions programs and the growing need for them.

While we understand the importance of advocacy and research, there are many great programs out there that simply do not have the financial resources needed to help all those who are suffering. That’s our focus. With your help, we want to raise the funds to expand proven programs that can help people who need access to them right now.

THE NEED IS URGENT Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in Canada and a leading cause of death among many segments of our population. And it’s growing. Between 1990 and 2015 the prevalence of anxiety disorders increased by 42% and depressive disorders by 54%. These conditions account for approximately half of all mental illnesses. One in five Canadian adults encounter a serious mental health or addiction challenge in any given year. By age 40, half our population will have faced such a challenge. Our overall suicide rate is the third highest among developed countries, accounting for 24% of all deaths among 15-24 year olds and 16% among 25-44 year olds. Mental illness is also widely acknowledged as a significant contributing factor to other serious health conditions ranging from obesity to heart disease.

SOMETIMES IT IS ABOUT THE MONEY Right now, there isn’t enough being invested in front line programs that assist people with mental health and addictions challenges in a timely manner. 33

CHANGE IS NOT HAPPENING FAST ENOUGH Despite all the evidence of need, change to address it is not happening fast enough. Growing numbers of people continue to suffer unnecessarily. Only one in five children in Canada facing a mental health challenge gets the help they need. One in five Canadians will experience an mental health issue this year. While many of those suffering do not seek support due to the associated stigma, others do not seek treatment or are more drastically impacted because wait times to receive professional help are unacceptably long. Research conducted by the World Health Organization indicates that treatment is a worthwhile investment. For every dollar invested in treatment, there is a return of four dollars in better health, ability to work and overall quality of life. 4

THE SOLUTIONS ARE THERE The A Dollar A Day Foundation exists to raise funds to close the gap between the availability of front line mental health and addictions programs and the growing need. We keep it simple and equitable by asking everyone for A Dollar A Day and no more. Our promise to each donor is to have as much of that dollar as possible hit the front line where it is needed most. We strive to ensure that the programs we fund impact people in the regions where our donors live.

CLOSING THE TREATMENT GAP We fund proven front-line programs in places where there is a real need. We look for innovation, measurable results and the ability to replicate success. Our goal is to fund programs in every region of Canada that can impact lives right now.

THE A DOLLAR A DAY FOUNDATION ABOUT US We all know that numbers never tell the full story. Behind every statistic is a real suffering human being with the potential to recover and live to their potential. These people are our friends, family members and co-workers; the reality is we’re all impacted by mental illness and addictions. And if and we all decide to own a small piece of the solution, together we can make a huge difference. That’s the idea.

“Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.”

- Margaret Mead, Author

The A Dollar A Day Foundation is a simple, affordable and empowering way to support frontline mental health and addictions programs. Everyone gives a little--A Dollar A Day. We put our small change to work for big change. And by doing so we build a stronger collective voice for change in how society regards mental health and addictions.

OUR PRINCIPLES The A Dollar A Day Foundation is committed to making it as simple as possible to donate and to being lean and efficient. These simple principles underpin how the foundation does just that:

EQUALITY AMONG DONORS We ask everyone for A Dollar A Day - no more, no less to establish a fundamental equity among donors. Your voice for social change is needed - your dollar will go far and will count the same as everyone else’s in sending a louder message LEAN AND EFFICIENT The A Dollar A Day Foundation will be kept simple, lean, and efficient. No grand fundraising events or costly ad campaigns. More dollars to the front line! By looking to corporate partners to support a separate endowment to cover operating and administration costs, more and more of your dollar goes directly to the front lines. Our goal is simple. Our goal is simple. Over time we want to be able to say that 100% of all donations from individuals goes to front line programs. REGIONAL INVESTMENT The goal is to fund programs where donors can see and hear about the impact; one in every region of the country and more as we grow.

TRANSPARENCY THROUGH EXEMPLARY COMMUNICATIONS Through cost effective online communications, we will Share the Change you are making possible and provide donors with a voice and a vehicle for Sharing the Change with others.

NO DUPLICATION We do not deliver programs or profess to be experts in mental health. With the help of organizations such the Canadian Mental Health Association, we identify needs and fund proven programs that are succeeding, but just need more financial resources. IMPACT TODAY Good people are suffering today and effective programs and program partners exist. Through partnerships with credible organizations your investment will hit the ground running.
