Chamber bids farewell to Julie Pope Julie has been a valuable board member and President of the KDCCI since 2007 and has made the decision due to personal circumstances. The Board accepted her resignation with regret, Julie’s contributions to the Chamber and her support for local businesses will be missed. Pluto workers facing $40 million fines for strike More than 1500 fly in, fly out workers are being prosecuted by Woodside Petroleum’s Pluto gas project based in the Pilbara over a strike and are facing fines totalling more than $40 million. The 8 day strike took place in January this year at the $12 billion Pilbara project. Union and non-union workers are being prosecuted individualy and could face fines of up to $28,000 each. The workers were protesting against Woodside’s ‘motelling’ plans whereby they would lose their private accommodation and have to stay in a different room each time they came back. First you sift a coupl’a cups a flour in the bowl, then you sift the cocoa powder, three big spoons I’m told, then you add a cup a sugar, then a cup of milk, then you whip a mighty frenzy ‘til it looks like silk.

then you sip a tipple of the rum upon the bench, then you go and do your teeth in case there is a stench, then you find the next step in this little recipe… Ah, that’s right, I near forgot three eggs this cakey needs.

Bake the thing for five no, ten, no one hour, seventeen. Sip a rum and cola, you’re a cakely, goddess queen. Take it from the oven (one hour late, you fell asleep). Curse a little, hang your head, you’re sure some bits will keep.

Decorate with aching head And try define the brown, chips of charcoal chocolate chunks of cake they make you frown. Take it to FeNaclNG and place it on the stand. Wonder what to call it things did not go quite to plan.

Then you crack the eggs in it. One. Two. Three. Then you take a coupl’a gulps of rum (when no one sees). Next you add vanilla yes, a capful in the mix, then you crack three eggs in it and blend it really quick,

Spin around the room yourself as if you are a cake, swishing here and sloshing there; it’s fun to stir and shake! And with things a’spinning it is time to cook the cake. Don’t forget three eggs of course, the most deplored mistake.

Cool it on that rack you’ve got although your cake is burnt. Go to make an egg for lunch, a meal you’ve truly earned. Swear you’d a dozen of them, now you’ve only…none? Utterly confused, maybe too much time in the sun?

Not the fine designer ferris wheel you had in mind. More like, well, a chunk of rubble, brown and red and kind… kind of like, that’s it, you’ve got it! And you take the prize. Presenting here for all to see… my ‘Pilbara Rock’. Surprise!

Residents encouraged to water efficiently The Water Corporation is urging residents throughout the north to make sure they are watering their lawns and gardens as efficiently as possible. North West Regional Business Manager Kerrie Chapman said today there were a few basic things residents and businesses could do outside to make sure they were making the most of their water. “We often see water pooling on roads and driveways as a result of irrigation runoff,” said Mrs Chapman. “This is often caused by over irrigating or the surface of the soil being hard and unable to absorb water. “To avoid wasting water in this way, residents could try shortening their irrigation run times or aerating their soil, allowing water to penetrate to the roots of their lawns and gardens.” Mrs Chapman said it was also common for reticulation systems to water roads and driveways. The answer was to make sure sprinklers only watered lawns and gardens and where possible

she suggested that heavy drop sprinklers be used to reduce the amount of overspray caused by strong winds. “It’s also a good idea to regularly check your reticulation controller to make sure it is operating properly. When doing this, make sure the back-up battery is fully charged,” she said. “If you are resetting a preexisting controller it is a good idea to reset the unit before getting started. This will ensure that you will not end up with a number of irrigation programs running at once.” Mrs Chapman said that when programming reticulation controllers to keep in mind that only one start time was needed for each program and that the rest of the stations would follow in sequence. “If you program in multiple start times then you will end up watering each station a number of times,” she said. “By regularly taking a quick look at each reticulation station, while in operation, residents will likely pick up on the vast majority

• Water your garden efficiently of problems including broken sprinkler heads, sprinklers watering roads and driveways, and overspray and pressure issues.” “Also, be aware that sprinkler rosters and a daytime sprinkler ban are in place in the North West.” Throughout the North West, reticulation can be used every alternate day, either before 9am or after 6pm, based on the last digit of house numbers. When there is no house

number, the lot number is to be used. If the last digit of your house number is even, you can only water on even numbered days of the month. If the last digit of your house or lot number is uneven, you can only water on uneven days of the month. For more information on sprinkler rosters in the North West call 13 10 39 or visit www. watercorporation.com.au.

Mixing business with pleasure The KDDCI hosted the Small Business - Business After Hours event on the 28th July at the Lotteries House. It was an opportunity for six local small businesses to showcase their products and services to the local community, and share the cost of the event including the refreshments available. It is fantastic exposure for the companies, and a great way to bring business and community together. KDCCI President, Robin Vandenberg was the MC for the event and launched the new 20102011 Business Directory that will be distributed to all residential and business addresses over the coming weeks. The event was sponsored by the Shire of Roebourne, and Deputy President John Lalley was the key note speaker. During the evening each host business were given the chance to introduce their company and discuss the products and services that they provide with a few freebies and samples to give out. Karratha

Record breaker to run around Australia By Kristen Cookson Going for a run around the block is pretty hard work for some, but try going for a run around Australia. Sarah Mycroft is attempting to set a new world record as the first woman to race around Australia on foot and we were lucky enough to meet her as she passed through Karratha last week. Mycroft is raising money for the children’s charity Mindd Foundation www.mindd. org who promote an integrated approach to healthcare for the whole family and focus on the paediatric disorders of Autism, ADHD, asthma, allergies, chronic illness, learning and language delay and digestive and behavioural disorders,

commonly arising from such synthetic food that we are told is "normal" to feed to children. Mycroft from NSW set off on her inspirational journey from the Sydney Opera House and headed North on the 4th April 2010 and aims to be back in one piece by mid December. Her route is the highway number one so when she completes her journey she will have run over 16,000km and she has already passed the halfway mark. Her daily target is to run about 60 to 70 kilometres a day which is split between a morning run at 4am and an evening run to miss the Australian heat. During the day Mycroft returns to her other role as ‘Mummy’ to her two children Bonnie aged 4 and Austin 18 months. This mission is hard enough but to be doing it as a single mum to two young children really shows you can do anything you really put your mind to. Whilst Mycroft is running, her support crew consisting of 3 travellers

• Sarah Mycroft has been running for 16 weeks now mind the children as well as drive alongside her and assist in cooking and setting up camp. Mycroft will be passing her competition Deborah de Williams who set off 8 days before Mycroft in the opposite direction. When asked why she wanted to run around Australia she said “Basically to be the first woman to do it and to show how much energy you can have from a good organic diet”. Mycroft wants to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, in particular healthy eating

and regular exercise. She said she will only feed her children food that has no added colours, additives or preservatives. Mycroft hopes to inspire people to not only follow their dreams but to live a healthy life. “Getting up in the morning and going for a run makes you feel better for the rest of the day. It may be a struggle for the first few days but you’ll soon get into a routine and feel so much better for it” she said. Mycroft

has

been

sponsored by many companies including Mizuno, Beaurepairs and Solar Springs Health Retreat to name a few and also people have donated on her website which has helped her along her journey. She would like give a big thank you to Big Four Pilbara Holiday park in Karratha and Dampier Caravan Park who she said were amazing whilst she stayed in the area. If you wish to donate and contribute towards this cause you can do so online at www. onelapnoexcuses.com

Turkey & Crackers in July

Roebourne kids had a blast over the July school holidays enjoying a range of activities ran by the Yaandina Youth Service along with PCYC across the 2 weeks. The activities included cultural story telling, trips to Harding Dam, an all night movie marathon, arts and craft and much more. Yaandina Youth Service would like to thank the Shire of Roebourne, Michael Nikakis from PCYC, Juluwarlu, Ricky Sandy, Wendy Darby and all the community members who came down and showed their support. • Above: Everyone enjoyed the yummy barbecue. • Left: Everyone sat down to listen to the elders’ storytelling • Bottom Left: Georgia Mills from the Yaandina Youth Service with the children.

It was a challenging day in the kitchen on the 28th July as the Salvation Army hosted their Christmas in July dinner. This is the third year the event has been held and it’s an event that new Corps Officer’s Dean and Kaye Hill want to keep up. “It’s a chance to bring the community together” Kaye said. The dinner served for everyone was a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and it was all for free! People from near and far turned up for the event with some travelling from Donnybrook, Mandurah and Perth.

The Karratha Bikers held their annual Toy Run on Saturday 17th of July. The annual Toy Run event brings all bikers alike together to ride to a certain destination with a choice of toy attached to their bike in aid of raising money for charities. This year they raised money for the Salvation Army, along with the donation of all the toys. After a superb lunch and a raffle or two to help raise money for the Salvation Army, some 70 riders left Point Samson Tavern at 3pm and set off riding to the Mermaid Hotel in Dampier. The ride to Dampier was the highlight of the days run with all riders following Karratha Bikers’ President Rex O’Leary, two abreast for the run to Dampier. More raffle draws at the Mermaid helped to supplement the money raised for the Toy Run before everyone headed back to the Karratha Bikers’ Clubhouse in the KIE with a presentation to Dean Hill, Corps Officer for the Salvation Army, Karratha. Dean rode his own bike on the run and said it was great to

Local business launches new premises The Nickol Bay Jewellers based in the Karratha Centro shopping centre revealed it’s brand new renovated premises on 29th July and it turned into a very busy day for the team. The renovations have taken just over 3 weeks and in such a short space of time the new shop’s white decor reflects that of a city style jewellers. Manager Lesley Clark said “It was time for a complete makeover and we are all really pleased with the new shop”. The company will now be a Pandora Store In Store, showcasing their main range of Pandora jewellery who release a new line every 6 months. With the new store layout they can now showcase a lot more of their stock including the ever so popular mix and match earrings. As well as their usual lines of

To celebrate the launch of the new shop premises Nickol Bay Jewellers are giving every customer that spends over $150 an entry into a draw for a diamond and white gold ring worth $5,500. Dirk would like to thank everyone for their hard work in getting the premises ready and looking immaculate and a special thank you goes to local builders T&J Pears Building Company for an outstanding job in just over 3 weeks.

Short Beaked Echidna This very interesting little mammal is only one of two species of Monotremes, the other being the platypus. They differ from other mammals by the fact both lay eggs yet produce milk and suckle their young. They are a common little critter being found throughout Australia including Tasmania. Coat colour varies in the Tasmanian and Kangaroo Island populations but tend to be the darker brown in the rest of Australia. The southern animals tend to have fur growing amongst the spines to help keep body temperature up against the cold. Their spines are actually made of keratin, the same stuff as human hair. Echidnas not only live on a diet of termites and ants but will also dine on beetles and bugs. They have a very small mouth opening and pull in food via their long sticky tongue which is then ground by special plates in their palate and jaw. As their diet is high in protein they can go days without food when in care. They are basically solitary animals and once a juvenile is weaned they are on their own.

West Pilbara Iron Ore Project Stage 1 Mine and Rail Proposal (21 June 2010 – 16 August 2010)

Echidnas are territorial but only in the sense of having an area to wander and feed. A few animals can live in the same area all with their ‘territories’ overlapping. The female Echidnas don’t have a pouch as such but a skin fold that is controlled by muscles. It is in this that the egg is carried till it hatches, then the baby is carried around to the age where the spines start to show. The baby, called a puggle, is then left in a burrow where mum will only call in once a week to feed it. Echidnas don’t have teats either but seep milk out through their skin where the puggle laps it off. A baby will gain 1/3rd of its bodyweight per feed (which is an awful lot). They are weaned and abandoned by mum at around 7 months of age. The echidnas PWCA get into care are victims of road accidents or more recently dog attacks.

API Management Pty Ltd is proposing to develop the West Pilbara Iron Ore Project (WPIOP), an iron ore mining and export operation based on a number of resources located on the western fringe of the Hamersley Ranges, south of Pannawonica, Western Australia. The proposal involves the establishment and operation of the mining area (and associated infrastructure) and the construction and operation of a railway to a new deepwater port (Anketell Port, the subject of a separate proposal). A Public Environmental Review (PER) has been prepared by the Company in accordance with Western Australian Government procedures and is released for public review. The Western Australian process has also been accredited by the Australian Government for the purpose of its environmental assessment. The PER describes the proposal, examines the likely environmental effects and the proposed environmental management procedures associated with the proposed development. In consultation with the Environmental Protection Authority, a more structured risk-based approach to the environmental impact assessment of the proposal has been trialled and is also described in the PER. Hard copies of the PER may be purchased for $10 (including postage and packaging) or a CD version is available free of charge from: API Management Pty Ltd Level 2 Aquila Centre 1 Preston Street Como WA 6152 (61) 8 9423 0222

• A little Echidna Nearly all are able to be released again but occasionally we have to euthanase if the beak is broken or the back is broken. They can only breathe through their nose and a (dislodged) break will suffocate them. If they can still breathe and the decision is to let it heal quite often the animal will starve as it can not stick out or pull in its tongue or grind its food in the normal fashion. If there is any swelling to the nose an x-ray is required to determine if it is broken or only cracked. A crack or chip will heal with no effect to the animals’ normal activities.

Miranda was quick to pull over and get the dog safely into her car. She drove to SAFE to seek assistance, unfortunately the owner couldn’t be contacted as there was no phone number on the dog.

St Luke’s sports carnival By Margaret Bertling 350 St Luke’s College students donned their house colours and assembled at Bulgarra oval last week for their annual; inter-house athletics carnival. Sports coordinator Mel Kearney said the competition was fierce in amongst students with the stat up of the day being a traditional war cry competition.

• Lauren Godfrey, Amy Ford and Hayden Robinson

• Kayla Day high jumping for the Nickol team

• The Harding team pull as hard as they can in the tug-o-war

“Harding won the first round with their familiar pre carnival cry, compliments of Mr Harlen who helped the students pen the lyrics a long time ago with the familiar “Rufty Tufty Harding” line,” she said.

Harding, Fortescue, Maitland and Nickol all chanted and barracked for their team players from the start of the first firing gun to the end of the day.

In total there were 110 events over the day and all students had the opportunity to participate in an event to earn points for their house.

“The relay races were great and there was good sportsmanship and participation from all students during the day,” said Ms Kearney.

“There was such great participation from the athletes and enthusiastic house captains meant the day ran super smoothly.”

Strongman Nathan’s heart pumps sturdily for school chaplaincy

• Nathan with students Shanae Murphy, Jordan Grigson, Jess Ireland, Alan Pollock, Pat Longbottom, Anthony Monson Australian Bench Press Record holder and YouthCARE school chaplain Nathan Baxter says there is no greater reward than seeing students ‘get it’. “Nothing – not even my recent trip to the World Bench Press Championships in Texas – gives me such a kick than when, sometimes after years of seeing what appears to be no result, a student will do or say something that reveals the penny has dropped. This makes my job very satisfying,” says the 165kg Karratha Senior High School chaplain who broke his own Australian Bench Press record for the 6th time with a lift of 290kg in Texas recently. “Being in a country town and at Karratha Senior High School for 8 years, means I am able to form long lasting, meaningful relationships with my students – even after they’ve completed school. I stay connected with them for long enough to celebrate when they get their first job or get married.” Nathan says he particularly enjoys presenting the Rock and Water Program, aimed at young male students at the school. The program encompasses physical-social teaching for boys

and helps them do develop selfcontrol, self-reflection and selfconfidence. This muscle man, who is also the Strongman title winner (Nov 2009 – South West strongest man) and winner in the National Australian Power Lifting Championships (2008 & 2009), says he loves the opportunity to connect with people ‘on a very real level’ and influence them in a positive way – inside and outside the school’s gates. Nathan says that his diet before a competition is not that much different to the man in the street – ‘it’s just the quantity and frequency that is much greater.’ He eats a lot of steak, vegetables and oats ‘plus some protein shakes around training times.’ Owing to ‘ongoing issues’ with his right knee, he will probably not be heading to South Africa to participate in the World Power Lifting Championships in Potchefstroom in November this year, but he plans to be back for the World Championships in Austria in 2011, if he can secure a major sponsor. Companies who are interested in sponsoring Nathan, who is also his own coach, can contact YouthCARE head office on (08) 93765000.

Roebourne Races Final Cup Day A huge crowd of over 4,000 patrons turned up for the final final Nor West Jockey Club Roebourne Cup Day on Saturday 24th July. The event lived up to one of the highlights of the Shire of Roebourne calendar. Amongst the crowd there were 16 corporate tents that entertained their guests throughout the day including Mermaid Marine and Cool Change to name a few. The Cool Change boutique again hosted the Fashions on the Fields which many ladies and gentlemen entered. Paula Smith won in the fillies competition and for the colts, Alex Cavason won the judges vote in his bright red suit. As with all race cup days you can expect to see men wearing colourful and vibrant suits. Looking though the crowds you could see a vast range of bright coloured suits including pink, yellow, electric blue and chequered. Special Guest Mr John Letts, 2 times Melbourne Cup winning jockey was on course all day and presented the Roebourne Cup. Mr Letts thoroughly enjoyed the

day, and said that the Robourne Races was one of the best country race meetings that he had attended. NWJC’s Secretary Kim Davies said Mr John Zucal, Chairman of Stewards WA attended Cup Day. He was very pleased with the event, and congratulated the NWJC Committee on a great day of racing. After an exciting day of racing, local band Misguided played to the crowd. The NWJC were pleased to see there was no incidents during the day and that Patrons didn’t drink & drive. There were plenty of buses provided by the Karratha Entertainment Centre and Kanga Van and a number of cars were left overnight on course. Police were also breath testing patrons leaving the course. The NWJC would like to thank the Apex Club for assisting all day. Their presence assisted the Committee immensely. They would also like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for Sponsoring Mr Letts attending Cup Day.

Diesel rocks the Pilbara crowd Singer Johnny Diesel and band played at the Icon Restaurant on the 21st July and at the Mermaid Hotel the following evening. Diesel was originally the leader of Johnny Diesel & the Injectors, until he eventually went solo in 1991. The fans arrived and were treated to a solo performance from local James Cutfield who sang covers such as Under the Bridge and the Hoodoo Guru’s What’s my Scene? The crowd had already got up from their seats to dance when Diesel and band took to the stage. He opened up with a the rock and roll classic Spanish Castle Magic by guitar hero Jimmi Hendrix. Throughout the set he also played Love Junk, Steal My Sunshine and Man Alive which didn’t disappoint the crowd and finally Cry In Shame which was the favorite everyone was waiting to hear.

Local band rock it

Local cover band ‘Rocket Surgery’ have been playing gigs in Karratha for a few months now and ‘the calendar is filling up’, according to singer Jonno. “There seems to be a good demand for live music here at the moment as pubs compete for punters. It’s a great time of the year to go out for a meal or a few beers and be entertained by something other than the latest reality TV show.” Their most recent gig was at the Tambrey on Friday 16th July. Guitarist Mike cut his teeth in the south west of WA, while Mick has been playing drums for bands in the Pilbara for years. “Three-piece bands are hard work, but there’s something really satisfying about pulling off a cover that most bands would put in the ‘too hard basket” said Jonno. “Everyone has to pull their weight to contribute to a full sound, but we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves, including some custom effects that you won’t hear anywhere else.” Word of mouth has been keeping The Troika Dolls by Mira nda Darthe ling trio busy for the last few months, with private functions as well as pub The Last 10 Seconds by Simon Kerni ck gigs on the horizon.

• Rocket Surgery band members Michael, Mick and Jonno “Opening for the Bondi Cigars in three weeks will be a huge night – hopefully they’re good sports ‘cause I’ve got a funny feeling we’re going to blow them off the stage !”, laughs Mike. Kmart raises money for premature babies Over the last two months Kmart customers nationally have raised nearly $50,000 for women’s hospital foundations around Australia, with over $650 coming from South Hedland customers. In Western Australia the funds raised will support essential research into illnesses affecting premature babies which is being undertaken by the Women and Infants Research Foundation (WIRF) based at King Edward Memorial Hospital. Becky Cruickshank was born 17 weeks premature and like a number of premature babies suffers from a voice disorder. A hoarse or quiet voice, an inability to shout and a narrowing of the airways are among the many difficulties that confront premature babies in adult life. “Many of our tiniest premature babies are believed to suffer from this disorder and this ground breaking study, headed by neonatologist Dr Noel French and a team of voice specialists, will help Neonatal Care Units globally to identify and develop preventative strategies to assist them”, said Director, WIRF, Professor John Newnham. Kmart was inspired to launch the new fund raising initiative after seeing the wonderful work the Foundation did to raise money for equipment for the King Edward Memorial Hospital and support research studies into a range of women and infant health issues including menopause and reproduction.

It’s not too late to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza The Department of Health has reminded people that it is not too late to get vaccinated as this year’s first influenza cases have been reported in WA, signalling the start of the influenza season. Communicable Disease Control Director Dr Paul Armstrong said vaccination against influenza was the best way to protect against the disease and that anyone who wanted to prevent themselves getting influenza should consider getting vaccinated. Dr Armstrong said however, that vaccination was particularly important for those in groups that had a high risk of developing severe disease, including the elderly, Indigenous people, pregnant women, the very overweight, and people with chronic medical conditions. “It is important for these high risk groups to take advantage of the free Commonwealth-funded vaccine that is available to them,” he said. “It takes from 10 to 14 days to develop good immunity after the vaccine, so people who want to be vaccinated, should do so quickly.” People who were vaccinated not only protected themselves, but they also helped to slow the spread of influenza in the community and reduce the load on our hospitals. Dr Armstrong said the seasonal influenza vaccination program for healthy children under five years of age remained suspended. “Parents of children aged under five who have an underlying

medical condition that puts their child at increased risk of severe illness from flu are encouraged to speak with their doctor about vaccination options,” he said.

This year’s seasonal influenza vaccine will protect against the human swine flu strain, as well as two other strains of the virus which are expected to circulate in the community.

21st July 2010 Born on Wednesday 21/07/10 at 5.02pm at Nickol Bay Hospital, Karratha. She weighed in at 2.96Kg and measured 47cm. Both her mum (Camilla Davies) and I, her dad (Simon Davies), are over the moon. We would like to thank the Midwives and Doctors at the hospital for all they did, especially Katy.

The free Panvax vaccine, which protects against human swine flu, is also available free through GPs for people of all ages, including school aged children. The free flu vaccinations are available from GPs and local immunisation clinics. Dr Armstrong reminded the public that a fee may be charged to administer the vaccine and this should be discussed when making a vaccination appointment. Each year about 10 per cent of the Western Australian population catch influenza and more than 200 people die from complications such as pneumonia.

Bon Royce Ewing 23rd June 2010 Bon was born on the 23rd June to proud parents Callie and Wayne. He weighed 3860 grams. He will be a baby brother to Chenan and Tessa. Callie and Wayne cannot express their immense gratitude to the midwives and doctors at Nickol Bay Hospital, with a special thank you to Kath, Shirley and Katy.

The symptoms of influenza - fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches - are often more severe than other coughs and colds that circulate during winter. People in high risk groups who develop symptoms of influenza should see their doctor early.

Mel’s getting clucky & she wants your babies!

Other people, unless the illness is more severe, should treat their symptoms and keep away from others, especially those in high risk groups, until their symptoms resolve.

His photographs have been published in Great Britain, Europe and South Africa. For the last 25 years Bruce has concentrated mainly on portraiture and wedding photography. His style of photography could be described as honest and relaxed. Bruce doesn’t like to work in a studio as he feels that portraits taken in natural settings really bring out people’s individual characteristics. He achieves this by creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere to get the most out of your portrait.

“People ask me if I get sick and tired of weddings and portraits, but I don’t, each one is different and even after all these years I still sometimes get a tear in my eye at weddings” he said. As well as portrait and wedding photography, Bruce’s other love is travel photography and many of my awards have been achieved with images taken whilst travelling. The story of Sam and his island home New life has been brought to the legend of Sam Ostojich and his island home in a locally produced book published by Dampier Community Association. The new edition of the book refreshes the previous work by Sue Mitchell and the Year 3-4 class at Dampier Primary School back in 2005. The book outlines the life and achievements of Sam, who moved to the area from Yugoslavia in the 1960’s. The island (officially known as Tidepole Island) became his home during the 1970’s until his death in 2005. Contrary to the stereotypes of an island living hermit, Sam would often have up to twenty visitors at a time at his home and was even know to have weddings and parties on the island. Ms Mitchell said that just about every child in Dampier had a good story to tell about Sam. “Whenever we went to visit

him he would always put on his finest clothes, a brand new pair of stubbies, with creases, tags and all” she said. “The island isn’t just a legend, it’s a part of our history. I’d like to see the island classified on the National Heritage list.” The island again become a popular place for weddings and functions, Caretaker Brad Beaumont said. “Eventually I would like to work with the Shire to build barbeques, toilets and some permanent shade.” If you would like to help preserve Sams Island, regular busy bees and restoration days are planned. The book is now available from the Karratha Visitor Centre, Dampier Tourist Park, the Seafarers Centre. Tours of the island are conducted weekdays at 10am by Sam’s Island caretaker Brad Beaumont. One of Australia's most respected infrastructure experts has accused the state government of "wimping out" over power price rises. Mr Forrest, the chief executive of Fortescue, has told a teleconference in Perth that his company and its counterparts not only remained opposed to the tax, but they now held grave fears because the Greens might win the balance of power in the Senate. Thank You

The local followers of the Sport of Kings, first raced their horses in 1863 on the sands of Settlers Beach behind the early township of Cossack. In August 1867 a Race Meeting was held at Roebourne and the Nor West Jockey Club was born. The main event was the Roebourne Plate with a whopping ÂŁ15 prize. 146 years later the riders are now battling it out for the princely sum of $30,000 and the 2010 title. The Roebourne Race Round could not have grown and survived the years without the many generous sponsors and supporters. For those listed below, thank you for support during the 2010 season. Girls defeat the boys at football By Brad Harris

them in the lead.

Sunday 18th saw the Kats Club host its Annual 100 Club Raffle, and with $3000 in prizes available, it once again proved a hit! Congratulations to Alex Hipworth for winning the Major Prize.

Somehow, they managed to hold off a fearsome late surge from the Girls. Or so it would seem.

The day started with a difference this year, with a Social Club organised Girls Vs Boys scratch match.

The Girls being declared the winners by a huge margin: one solitary behind!

To keep things interesting (and fair) the rules were modified, with the Girls' goal size being twice regulation size and the Boys having to hold a can in one hand at all times! No Spills & No Tackles! The Girls came out firing in the first half with a dominant display, albeit perhaps aided by some dirty tactics, they went in to the main break in front. The Boys on the other hand did not trouble the scoreboard. They turned things around however in the second half, as they tried to regain some dignity. A 5-straight goal haul putting

Collaboration between goal umpires after the final siren, meant for a controversial finish.

With the days' physical challenge out of the way, players and supporters headed inside for some ice cold refreshments, and for their chance to win the Annual 100 Club Raffle. Congratulations must go to Alex Hipworth who won the major Prize of $1,500 in cash, Pam Harris who won 2nd Prize of an Esky and $300 Worth of Spirits and Tegan Forster who won 3rd Prize of an Esky and $200 Worth of Beer. The Club would like to thank Tegan Forster for organising the event, everyone who helped, and of course all those who attended and made it a fun and exciting day!

There was a nail biting finish to the hockey game played at the Bulgurra Tennis Courts last Wednesday night. The yellow and red team were well matched with the ball changing ends often. Players battled it out for possession and had difficulty finding scoring opportunities. The final score was 6 goals to 5 in favour on the red team. New recruits Marina Couchman, Dave Bartlet and Ashley Rogers blitzed the field with their pace and skill.

Roebourne Cup By Nigel Weston

South Hedland Trainer, Shane Harcourt experienced his biggest success in training, taking out Saturdays $30,000 XXXX Gold Roebourne Cup (2200m) with Supreme Royal. Ridden superbly by Leading Goldfields Jockey, Russell Hanson and in front of a huge crowd, Supreme Royal just withstood a last minute charge by Savage Wolf, to take out the big event on The Roebourne calendar. Appreciating his lightweight, Supreme Royal raced on the pace all the way, with Hanson always saving the horse for the dash down the straight. Together with Magic Illusion, he kicked a length clear as they cornered and from their it was a tough slog. The favourites, Savage Wolf and Flirtson pulled out to make their runs, but were under immediate pressure. Flirtson didn’t run the distance, while Savage Wolf lifted in the final 100 metres. Supreme Royal though was able to hold all challenges off and held on to win by half a length. Savage Wolf flew for 2nd after looking gone at the 150 metre mark, whilst Magic Illusion was a very game third.

Handicap (1200m). Although he went very wide around the home corner, he managed to win among the roses on the outside fence, giving trainer, Don Whitfield a change of luck. The most impressive win of the day was Whoville High in The $8,500 All Season, Peter “Rags” Ramsay Memorial (1600m). Settling 2nd on the outside of the leader, Halo Pass, the Anne King trained grey, zoomed away in the straight to win by a conservative 5 lengths. Unfortunately, Race 2, The Tutt Bryant Sprint was called a No Race after Time Star jumped out of the barriers before the rest of the field were released. The race went ahead with most jockeys not sure whether to stay or go. Most of the jockeys were sure it would be called a no race as most of them tried to restrain their mount shortly after the race began. It was a bumper day for The Nor West Jockey Club and capped off one of their best years ever. Port Hedland now has their big day in the sun lined up for Monday, August 2, with The Cup sure to attract the likes of Racso, Savage Wolf, Supreme Royal and possibly a smokey from out of town.

Hanson left the track immediately with the intention of boarding a plane from Karratha to ride at Kalgoorlie the next day. Unfortunately he missed the plane and was unable to fill his engagements at Kalgoorlie. Supreme Royal has pulled up well from the run and Harcourt is strongly considering starting the horse in next Mondays $40,000 Cervan Marine Port Hedland Cup. Harcourt trained a double on the day when Vain Esteem won The $7,500 Mermaid Marine Handicap (1400m). In a grinding finish, Vain Esteem fought back on the inside after Whittingham loomed up and looked the winner. Young Apprentice, Hayley Diener lifted the mare across the line, adding another win to her profile. Jeffrey Berry continued his good form in the pigskin, riding a double for the day, top and tailing the program. He started the day winning on Steel Blue in The $7,250 Portaccomm Handicap (1200m), with The Len Healey trained galloper storming home in the final stages. Berry completed the day with White Ensign in The $8,000 North West Mechanical and Karratha Smash Repairs
