Safety Guidelines The following safety guidelines are ENFORCED at PCC: • Combustible materials (such as gasoline) shall be stored in safety cans and/or safety cabinets. • No open flames are permitted inside any building except in laboratories, maintenance shops, and heating systems designed for this purpose. • Students are not permitted to utilize labs without supervision. • No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted on campus, except for those persons and programs who are duly authorized to carry and use firearms.

• No fireworks or other explosives shall be used or stored on campus, except by duly authorized personnel.

No Alcohol

• No alcoholic beverages or controlled substances may be brought, sold, or consumed on campus.

No Pets

• Shoes must be worn at all times while on campus to prevent injuries and dress must be appropriate in nature.

No Open Flames

• No animals and/or pets are permitted on campus without prior authorization from campus officials.

No Firearms

Fire/Fire Drill If smoke or fire is discovered anywhere in a building or on the campus: • PULL THE NEAREST FIRE ALARM and call the switchboard. Warn others to stay away. • MOVE AWAY FROM THE AREA. Isolate the problem as well as possible by closing doors and windows. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RETRIEVE VALUABLES. • If you are aware that someone is trapped in a burning structure, inform security and/or the firefighters immediately. Do not re-enter the building alone. If you are trapped, stay low to the floor as you try to exit. Do not open any doors that feel hot. Use wet towels or cloths to protect yourself from flames and smoke.

Fire Drill Procedures: • When the fire alarm sounds, all personnel shall LEAVE THEIR ROOMS in an orderly manner.

• Follow FIRE EXIT ROUTES to the open field behind the L Building. (Person Campus) or to the second parking lot on the Caswell Campus. • DO NOT return to any building until the “all clear” signal is given. Bomb Threat Follow these steps in the case of a bomb threat: • DO NOT PANIC – REMAIN CALM • Notify the switchboard IMMEDIATELY (be sure to give time and place of detonation if known). • When alerted of a bomb threat, all personnel shall LEAVE THEIR ROOMS in an orderly manner.

Severe Weather Tornados/Severe Thunderstorms/Hurricanes • Time permitting, move to a building with a basement (Person Campus E,F,G or H) or to a severe weather shelter (green tornado signs). • Assist disabled persons to designated areas. • Move to an inside wall AWAY FROM WINDOWS and get under a table or desk. • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN TO THE PARKING LOT AND DRIVE AWAY • After the severe weather has ended, follow the fire exit routes and evacuate all buildings. • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EXTINGUISH ANY FIRES

Armed Intruder Upon notification of a “lockdown,” all faculty and staff should: • Clear students from the walkways immediately and have them report to the nearest classroom. • CLOSE AND SECURE ALL DOORS -CLOSE ANY OPEN BLINDS • Move students away from windows and doors. Seat students against an interior wall that may provide some protection.

• Remain under “lockdown” until you have been officially advised that the crisis has ended.

Medical Crisis In case of serious medical emergency, CALL 911 then: • Call the switchboard, give your name, telephone extension and location. • Call Student Development (if student is involved): Person Campus - ext 272 Caswell Campus - ext 226 • STAY WITH THE VICTIM. If conscious, ask what the problem is. If unconscious, check for breathing and bleeding. ONLY TRAINED INDIVIDUALS SHOULD ADMINISTER FIRST AID or CPR. • Keep the victim still, comfortable and warm.

Reporting Crime All incidents or injuries must be reported to the Vice President for Administrative Services as soon as possible (by the end of the 1st working day following the incident). • Reports should be submitted on an Incident Reporting Form (obtain a form from the Receptionist’s Desk or from the Coordinator of Buildings and Grounds).

Hazardous Spills Any spill involving hazardous material should be reported immediately to the Person/Caswell County Fire Department - 911. Then contact campus security - ext 0 (Person) or 221 (Caswell). • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN UP A SPILL • Beware of offensive odors or fumes resulting from spills. Be prepared to evacuate buildings and/or areas in order to avoid potentially dangerous fumes. • All laboratory and maintenance personnel SHOULD FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES POSTED IN EACH LAB regarding chemical and hazardous material spills.
