A heady cocktail of Chic-style funk-pop, sunshine grooves and scorched soul balladry, the release of TBNH sees The Brand New Heavies writing a new chapter in what has been an illustrious journey whilst also marking a return to their spiritual home, Acid Jazz Records. The album's heart, both musically and physically is a friendship that can be traced back to the mid-Eighties - more specifically the shared experiences growing into adulthood on the western reaches of London for Simon Bartholomew (guitar) and Andrew Levy (bass) and a return to the formula that saw the band score sixteen Top 40 hits and three million album sales. LIFE's anti-establishment outlook and witty, off-center social commentary underscores everything they do. Known for clever wordplay and energetic performances, they tackle the new wave of youth and working class discontent with both style and savvy. Their debut album, Popular Music, graced BBC Radio 1's list of the best albums of 2016. On their sophomore release, A Picture Of Good Health, produced by Luke Smith (Foals) and mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Parquet Courts), the band hone in on a bigger and more focused sound. Whereas Popular Music was broadly political, the new album, takes a more personal approach with beguilingly honest and brave lyrics while retaining their core DNA.
Joviale The Crisis
London-based Joviale's creates music that evokes the twinned realities of pleasure and pain in quotidian life. Her musicianship comes instinctually, informed more by tone and emotion. The purity of the pain in singers such as Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone, and the sugar rush of lovelorn 60’s girl groups like The Marvelettes, The Ronnettes, The Crystals and The Shangri-Las, who each sing of their doom with a charming coyness, all number among her formative emotional influences. The narrative thrust of songs in musical films informs the way she tells stories, and the timbre of the percussion and brass in the African music she listened to growing up exerts a powerful tonal influence. Joviale's music plays with the listener’s expectations. Through layering, dissonance and silences, her debut EP, The Crisis, is colorful, tense, charming, coy, resplendent, rare and unrestrained – sometimes all at once.

Afghan singer Elaha Soroor and award-winning duo Kefaya (Al MacSween & Giuliano Modarelli) join forces for Songs Of Our Mothers. This mighty and mezmerising new album, is a collection of folk songs traditionally performed by Afghan women. It draws on Elaha's own experience of fleeing Afghanistan, and the struggles faced by many other female artists. The US and Western-backed regimes that came to dominate Afghanistan in the latter part of the 20th century created a climate of heightened patriarchal oppression and persecution of women. These songs, filtered through a myriad of forms, from spiritual jazz and dub to Indian classical music and electronica, tell the stories of joy, pain and resilience, passed from mother to daughter in times of hardship and oppression while also celebrating femininity, sensuality and the spirit of resistance.
Ahmad Jamal Ballades
At the age of 88, composer and legendary jazz musician Ahmad Jamal presents Ballades, an album that sees him returning to his roots in a transcendent journey. Jamal comes from the closelyknit club of the great masters of jazz. That is why, in the manner of Coltrane and Miles, he goes back to his past as a way to overcome it. At its heart, Ballades is a solo piano album - something Jamal has never done before (double-bass player James Cammack is featured on three tracks). The music is art in its purest form, ranging from the iconic "Poinciana" to the symbolic "Marseille." Ballades is a new masterpiece in this artist's long and distinguished career.

Shahin Novrasli From Baku to New York City
CD JV570166 SRP $15.98
If going back to the great themes is a rite of passage for most young musicians, in this case the experience entails a particular dimension. First, Shahin Novrasli shows intense creativity, inspired by the music of his homeland. Also, Ahmad Jamal's production, which provides a telepathic rhythm (thanks to drummer Herlin Riley and double bass player James Cammack), symbolizes a wonderful transition: between two generations of musicians, between two centuries, and also between two continents, the West and the East, all this under the loving gaze of their elders, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. The emotion flowing through this album moves in time to the beating heart of jazz.

This program showcases the broad stylistic spectrum of Dutch music. Spanning a period of more than fifty years, it focuses on the double bass. Contemporary composers Louis Andriessen, Hans Kox, Martijn Padding and Michel van der Aa have all enriched the double bass repertoire. In their works, the instrument takes the solo role in a concerto with orchestra, is heard in a small ensemble and even on its own. Andriessen, the best known Dutch composer today, wrote his Elegy for Cello or Double Bass and Piano in 1950, while Kox's Four Studies for Double Bass Solo dates from 1988. The most recent pieces on this recording are Reports from the Low Country by Padding and For the time being by Michel Van der Aa. The entire recital is played with virtuosity and style by Rick Stotijn.

Tchaikovsky's Serenade is one of the most beautiful of all works for string ensemble, and it has been frequently performed by Amsterdam Sinfonietta since its establishment in 1988. Arensky wrote his String Quartet No.2 in memory of the composer, with whom he was friends. Arensky's homage overflows with melancholy and dark tone colors. The middle movement, based on a song by Tchaikovsky, was later arranged by Arensky for string orchestra. Amsterdam Sinfonietta took upon itself to arrange and perform the entire quartet. In Tchaikovsky's footsteps, Arensky made use here of religious chant and motifs from Russian folk music.

Ein deutsches Requiem, Brahms's longest choral work, was composed during three different periods of his life but completed between 1865 and 1868, perhaps as a result of the death of the composer's mother. It is a sacred work, but non-liturgical. It features text chosen by Brahms from the German Lutheran Bible, with passages from both the Old and New Testament. However, it does not include material about the Last Judgment, and was written primarily (according to Brahms), to comfort the living. On this recording, soloists Christiane Karg and Matthias Goerne are joined by the Swedish Radio Choir and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, all under the direction of maestro Daniel Harding.

From serious to lighthearted, these works are a test of a violinist’s technical prowess as well as being great fun to listen to - especially when performed with such artistry.
Ivana Gavric Origins
The idea for this album came about some years ago when Ivana Gavric attended a performance of Haydn’s Piano Concerto No.11. While reading the program notes, she was struck by the suggestion that the concerto’s Rondo all’ungarese was, despite its title, thought to be based on a Croatian or Bosnian folk melody. "This got me very excited, due to my heritage: I was born in Sarajevo, a small city that is a melting-pot of cultures, nationalities, architecture, arts, history and humor. The region’s culture is incredibly rich and diverse, and I am always keen to celebrate this," said Gavric. This concerto, together with solo piano works in homage to Haydn by leading French composers, frames the world premiere recording of Cheryl Francis Hoad’s piano concerto. Hoad was inspired by Haydn and the traditional Bosnian folk song "Kad ja pođjoh na Bentbaša." This album bridges the folk songs of Ivana’s childhood to the music of her professional life and beautifully reflects her varied heritage.
