NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

Hotel Last Resort resides among Violent Femmes' finest work, simultaneously refining and redefining their one-of-a-kind take on American music. The Soft Cavalry is the self-titled debut album from the husband and wife duo of Steve Clarke and Slowdive's Rachel Goswell. The band's music is a particularly British brand of intense cinematic drama. Fongola is the highly anticipated debut album from Congolese collective KOKOKO!. They’re best known for creating a contemporary aesthetic all their own by rewiring and upcycling materials such as metal, cans, engine parts and plastic containers into vital and resonant dance music. Penelope Isles’ expansive DIY mix of translucent dream-pop, fuzz-rock guitars and indie-psych flushes comes lovingly dipped in exquisite harmonies and lustrous melodies. Laville's debut album, The Wanderer, digs a little deeper than most. Love, passion and commitment are recurring themes on the album. Real World Records celebrates its 30th anniversary with Worldwide - 30 Years of Real World Music, a curated collection of nineteen of the labels most iconic tracks. A Descent into the Maelstrom was one of the last pieces written for the original Philip Glass Ensemble. Recorded at Denver, Colorado's Mighty Fine Productions with GRAMMYÂŽ Award-winning producer Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Old Crow Medicine Show) and GRAMMYÂŽ Award-winning engineer Ryan Mall, Hotel Last Resort resides among Violent Femmes' finest work, simultaneously refining and redefining their one-of-a-kind take on American music, mingling front porch folk, post-punk, spiritual jazz, country blues, avant garde improvisation, and golden age rock 'n' roll. Founded and fronted of course by Gano and Ritchie, the group remains as warm, wise and weird as ever before, with such new favorites as "Another Chorus" and "Everlasting You" continuing to mine the vast range of ideas, melodic complexity, and organic sonic craftsmanship that has characterized the band's body of work since their landmark 1983 debut.

The Soft Cavalry is the self-titled debut album from the husband and wife duo of Steve Clarke and Slowdive's Rachel Goswell. For Steve, this labor of love marks the first time he masterminded a record from start to finish, and it includes invaluable contributions from his both his wife (co-vocals) and his brother Michael (producer). The band's music is a particularly British brand of intense cinematic drama. Melodic and timeless, the album lands in the atmospheric dimensions between Pink Floyd, Talk Talk and R.E.M. The Soft Cavalry is both an exercise in creative and personal therapy. Steve emphasizes this was a record he "needed" to make. It was a way of rewriting the narrative, and proof that relative late bloomers (Steve was in his late 30s when he made the album) can make the record of their dreams.

Penelope Isles Until The Tide Creeps In

Penelope Isles was formed by brother-sister songwriters Jack and Lily Wolter. The quartet is completed by Jack Sowton and Becky Redford, who studied music and played in a three-piece with Lily. The quartet’s expansive DIY mix of translucent dream-pop, fuzz-rock guitars and indie-psych flushes comes lovingly dipped in exquisite harmonies and lustrous melodies: a combination so intuitive, you’d think it was in their blood. Until the Tide Creeps In is an album deepened the shared experiences of, in Jack’s words, "leaving home, moving away, dealing with transitions in life and growing up."

Laville's teenage years followed a familiar journey through joy and trauma that saw him singing locally, before University briefly curtailed his musical ambitions. His debut album, The Wanderer, was steered by the expert hand of producer Tristan Longworth. Fascinated by cinema and poetry, Laville's lyrics dig a little deeper than most. Love, passion and commitment are recurring themes on the album, with Laville moving from the super-smooth "Love Shine" to the curiously infectious "Wavy Love." "Easy" is a reflection on his gritty North London roots, and soulful standout "The Answer" is about toxic relationships. A bold voice that adds something distinctly new to the tapestry of soul, Laville's talent is too strong to remain a secret forever. It’s time for The Wanderer to come home.

Les Talens Lyriques & Christophe Rousset SALIERI Tarare

F0tq08ec!$#%)(s D14opw8c!#!$ $s

13

The third release from Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques in their cycle of operas by Antonio Salieri features the composer's Tarare, originally premiered in 1787. The opera's libretto was penned by Beaumarchais, who Salieri met in Paris in 1784 when the two artists were enjoying a triumph - one with Le Nozze di Figaro, the other with Les DanaĂŻdes. Beaumarchais saw Salieri as Gluck's successor, and entrusted him with this libretto adapted from a Persian tale. Set in in a barbaric Asia, Tarare tells the story of Sadak and Kalasrade, who were subject to the whims of a corrupt and perverted Sultan and a manipulating pontiff. Alone against everyone, Tarare, man-at-arms, is the hero of the moralistic fable. The work has it all - politics, love, intrigue - and scenes of great spectacle. However, it is the spirit of the Enlightenment that fuels the action, presenting a cutting satire on despotism.

LA DOLCE VOLTA

Olivier Latry Bach to the Future

On his first CD for La Dolce Volta, Olivier Latry has chosen a program devoted to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. This recording, made on the massive CavaillÊ-Coll organ of NotreDame de Paris, of which he is titular organist, raises a number of fascinating questions. "My approach highlights several paradoxes: the notion of performing these key works of Protestantism in one of the most emblematic centers of Catholicism, first of all, but also of playing them on an instrument that is, to say the least, far removed from the Baroque and Classical style of organ building. It’s quite true, all of this raises questions."

Star Russian soprano Sofia Fomina joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra and its Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski in this performance of Mahler's beguiling Symphony No.4, recorded live at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall. "No worldly commotion is heard in Heaven! All live in gentlest peace." Such is the childlike innocence that permeates the work, yet beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye - an undercurrent of mysticism and a momentary glimpse behind the curtain at something timeless and unsettling.

Arctic Philharmonic GLASS A Descent into the Maelstrom

CD OMM0140 SRP $19.98

In 1985, Philip Glass composed a "dance-theater" work based on Edgar Allan Poe's 1841 short story A Descent into the Maelstrom as one of the last pieces written for the original Philip Glass Ensemble. A few years ago, Norwegian filmmaker Jan Vardøen decided to make a film about the Poe story, which is set in the Arctic Circle near the Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway. At the same time, Vardøen discovered the Philip Glass Ensemble's recording of the work. As part of his film, Vardøen conscripted the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra and arranger Alexander Waaktar to adapt the music for full symphony orchestra, voice and synthesizer. The result is a dramatic new interpretation of a little known major Philip Glass work. This release from Orange Mountain Music marks the first recording of this dynamic piece in orchestral form.

Christoph König DVORÁK Symphony No.9; COPLAND Quiet City; IVES Washington's Birthday Soloists Européens Luxembourg This new recording from Christoph König and Soloists Européens Luxembourg features Dvořák's evergreen "New World" symphony alongside Charles Ives's Washington's Birthday and Aaron Copland’s Quiet City. In the 19th and 20th centuries, for those leaving the Old World – meaning in most cases Europe – America represented the hope of starting a new life unshackled from the past and its politics. America was, for many, a land of dreams. It is this reflective and dreamy quality which unites these three different compositions, each one describing in its own way the land once known as the New World.
