NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

The members of Jambinai met studying traditional music at Korea’s National University of Arts. They found they were united by a desire to present such music in a new way, “to communicate with the ordinary person who doesn’t listen to Korean traditional music,” says Lee, the band’s principal writer. The band’s music fuses the full dramatic range of postrock dynamics to Korean folk roots to create an exhilarating, vivid and unique sound. “We’re darker than other Korean traditional bands,” Lee adds, with considerable understatement. ONDA, Jambinai’s third album, is their most dynamic and rhythmic yet. Our other highlight for the month is the reissue of Daniel Johnston's much-loved Hi How Are You and Yip/ Jump Music - previously offered on cassette only - in double vinyl album format. This limited edition three-disc collector’s edition includes a Hi How Are You poster. [PIAS] is proud to welcome Canary Classics to our distribution family. Canary Classics is the brainchild of violinist Gil Shaham. Formerly a star artist on the Deutsche Grammophon label, Shaham established Canary Classics as one of the very first artist owned labels in 2003. His aim was to have the artistic freedom to collaborate where he feels there is an artistic and musical synergy. Our first release on the Canary Classics focuses on the music of Israeli-American composer Avner Dorman, one of the most sought-after composers of his generation. Letters from Gettysburg, a work scored for soprano, baritone, large chorus and percussion, is the centerpiece of an all-Dorman release. Other highlights for the month include an all-Howells release from King’s College Choir, the final volume in Andrew Manze’s Vaughan Williams symphony cycle, Volume 6 of Hyperion's Classical Piano Concerto series and four wide-ranging, thought-provoking releases on Philip Glass’s Orange Mountain Music label.

When the three founders of South Korea's Jambinai - Lee, Kim Bo-mi and Sim Eun-young - decided to, "communicate with the ordinary person who doesn't listen to Korean traditional music," few outsiders anticipated an extra-ordinary fusion with metal, post-rock and noise. "Most people expect Asian traditional music to make something smooth for yoga or meditation," says band spokesman Lee Il-woo. "We wanted to break all of that." The trio’s debut album, Différance, won Best Crossover Album at the 2013 Korean Music Awards. On their second album, A Hermitage, Lee cited the influence of bands like Metallica, Mogwai and Sigur Rös, but such was the trio’s energy levels, they seemed to draw more on thunderstorms, tidal waves and volcanic eruptions – a force of nature more than a band. ONDA is even more dynamic and rhythmic, with the permanent addition of Jaehyuk Choi (drums) and B.K Yu (bass), fixtures of Jambinai’s live band since 2017. Several cuts feature vocals. Most people don’t know Korean, so they hear our voices as sound rather than meaning. The album ends on a thematic note of drama and redemption. Once the music dies away, the feeling is one of blissful exhaustion.

Jordi Savall MOZART Symphonies No.39, 40 & 41 Le Concert des Nations

Following a long maturation process, Jordi Savall presents his interpretations of Mozart's last three symphonies. On this double album he has chosen to include the Symphony No.40 on both discs in order to underline the continuity existing from one work to the other. This juxtaposition highlights an important dimension of this milestone of 18th century orchestral music. Le Concert des Nations are at their best here, putting flesh and bone to a vision in which fluidity and theatricality dominate.

Avner Dorman has fast become one of the most sought-after composers of his generation. In 2018, he received the prestigious Azrieli Prize for his Violin Concerto No.2 and his opera Wahnfried was nominated for a 2018 International Opera Award. Written in 2013 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, Letters from Gettysburg, a work scored for soprano, baritone, large chorus and percussion, is the centerpiece in this all-Dorman release. It is paired with two Dorman works commissioned by Orli and Gil Shaham. After Brahms is three intermezzos pieces for solo piano that cleverly extend the harmonic language of Brahms. Dorman's third violin sonata, entitled Nigunim, draws on the musical influences of Jewish song, hailing from locations around the world – Africa, the Caucasus, the Balkans and Central Asia.

Thomas Dausgaard SIBELIUS Kullervo Benjamin Appl (baritone), Helena Juntunen (soprano), Lund Male Chorus, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Kullervo represents not only the confident first step in Sibelius's symphonic odyssey, it is also a viscerally exciting experience on its own terms. It is little wonder that the first performance in 1892 was such a triumph for the young composer. This recording from Thomas Dausgaard and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in an unmissable acquisition for anyone who knows only the numbered symphonies.

CD ONYX4190 SRP $19.98

The final volume of Andrew Manze's Vaughan Williams symphony cycle with the the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra features Symphonies Nos.7 and 9. The seventh drew its inspiration from music Vaughan Williams had composed for the film Scott of the Antarctic. The composer headed each movement with a literary quotation. They are narrated on this recording by distinguished actor Timothy West. Existing manuscripts of the ninth symphony support the idea that Vaughan Williams originally thought to compose a programmatic work based on Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles. This work, dating from the composer's final years, bears no trace of creative decline.

Robert Black GLASS The Not-Doings of An Insomniac

14

CD OMM0137 SRP $19.98

Constantly traveling, Philip Glass often finds himself on the road in a hotel room in an unfamiliar city. Time-zone changes often bring on bouts of insomnia. On a trip in Europe in 2015, Glass used these waking hours to consider pieces he had always dreamt about but never had a chance to realize with his other composing commitments. Traveling with a small inexpensive spiral-bound music notebook, Glass composed his Partita for Solo Double Bass for Robert Black, double bassist for the Bang on a Can All-Stars. The piece is cast in seven movements and unlike his other works for solo instruments, between each movement are poems by his friends or long-time associates - Lou Reed, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, David Byrne, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and Arthur Russell. The album is rounded off with the premiere recording of Prelude to Endgame for double bass and timpani. Glass composed the music for the 1984 production of Endgame, a Samuel Beckett play, by the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

2 CD + DVD OMM7017 SRP $25.98

Composed and conceived by Lisa Bielawa with a libretto by Erik Ehn, Vireo - The Spiritual Biography of a Witch’s Accuser is an opera in twelve episodes, created for television and online viewing. The eponymous heroine Vireo, played by Rowen Sabala, is a fourteenyear-old girl genius entangled in the historic obsession with female visionaries as they are defined by witch-hunters, early psychiatrists, and modern artists. Directed by Charles Otte, the opera removes the set limitations of a staged opera by shooting on location across the country in places such as Alcatraz, a monastery on the Hudson River, an abandoned train station in Oakland and the California Redwoods. The traditional pit orchestra is replaced by a cast of over 350 world-class musicians, on camera and inside the action. Featured artists include vocalists Deborah Voigt, Laurie Rubin, Gregory Purnhagen and Ryan Glover along with the Kronos Quartet, the San Francisco Girls Chorus, Alarm Will Sound, and more.

Emmanuel Leducq-Barôme SCHOENBERG Verklärte Nacht HONEGGER Symphony No.2 Baltic Chamber Orchestra

F0yt0 wc!$($@*s D14opw8c!#@)#*s

17

Emmanuel Leducq Barôme leads the Baltic Chamber Orchestra in a unique coupling of music by Schoenberg and Honegger. Schoenberg's early string sextet, Verklärte Nacht, dates from 1899. He made the arrangement for string orchestra in 1943. It is a work heavily indebted to Wagner - especially Tristan und Isolde - but the unique voice of Schoenberg is already apparent. It is a wonderful, intensely moving work and the ideal introduction to this great composer. Honegger's second symphony is scored for strings and trumpet. Composed for Paul Sacher and his Basel Chamber Orchestra, it was written during the darkest years of World War II. The Nazis had banned Honegger’s music and he was branded as "leftist," composing music for films for resistance cinema. It is a powerful work with a lament-like central slow movement and an energetic chorale theme in the finale providing a sense of triumphant resolution.
