Growing up intensely shy, 22-year-old Pip Blom was uncharacteristically plunged into the limelight during her teens when she answered an advertisement for a songwriting competition and reached the semi-finals. Failing to win was anything but a deterrent and neither was struggling to find band members post-competition. Pip simply plowed on, programing drums on a computer and writing and recording both bass and guitar parts. She decided to start self-releasing songs on the Internet and it didn't take long for people to start taking notice. Today, that same plucky, head-on attitude characterises everything she does, whether that's witnessing her band's powerfully impressive live show or listening to her honest, hearton-sleeve approach to writing songs on record. Boat is an open book of Pip Blom, delivered via her undeniable knack for writing a hook-laden, 3-4 minute song and planting it in your head on a loop for days.

The Peyote Dance, by Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith, is the first in a triptych of albums, collectively titled The Perfect Vision, to be released over the next year. Each take their inspiration from the writings of three emblematic French poets: Antonin Artaud, Arthur Rimbaud and RenĂŠ Daumal, and their necessity to travel to different lands to acquire a new vision and perspective on themselves and their artwork. Recorded in the Sierra Tarahumara of Mexico, The Peyote Dance, retraces Artaud's footsteps. The album's opening, recited by Gael Garcia Bernal, evokes the summer he traveled by train towards the Chihuahua region, and by horse to the Tarahumara mountains with the help of a mestizo guide. One of Artaud's goal was to find a peyote shaman who could help him recover from an opioid addiction. During his stay he encountered the RarĂĄmuri Indians and peyote shamans of Tarahumara. His transcendental experience resulted in the book The Peyote Dance. Back in New York, Patti Smith channeled Artaud's spirit by listening, reading and improvising to the music. The penultimate track on the album is a poem she wrote in homage to Artaud's last hours in a mental asylum in France.

Unloved is the trio of vocalist Jade Vincent, Keefus Ciancia (known for his collaborations with T-Bone Burnett, including the soundtrack to True Detective, and his unprecedented project with Jeff Bridges, Sleeping Tapes) and David Holmes (one of the world's most innovative DJs turned composer whose work includes Steven Soderberg's Ocean's Trilogy). Sharing a love for 60s' girl groups, French pop and film noir soundtracks, they have a sound at once hauled out of the silty depths of the past, and simultaneously wholly modern. Vincent's sublime voice and lyrics, possess an aching, rich-smoked tone of loss and love. Unloved's second full length record Heartbreak, was emboldened by its predecessor to be more emotionally exposed, more musically, lyrically, and vocally audacious. To enter the world of Unloved is to surrender oneself to a great musical immersion, where thoughts soften, ideas mingle with twisted mancini-esque orchestrations and music binds the dawn and dark. This digial release is an all-instrumental version of Heartbreak.

Christophe Rousset FRESCOBALDI Toccate e partite d’intavolatura di cimbalo – libro primo

Girolamo Frescobaldi was one of the most important composers of keyboard music in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Even J.S. Bach is said to have owned a copy of his Fiori musicali. This new disc by Christophe Rousset focuses on the first works Frescobaldi composed specifically for the harpsichord. Its expressive boldness recalls - in a musical way - Caravaggio's chiaroscuro. Rousset performs on an original harpsichord from the late 16th century. Its sound faithfully testifies to the significant place of this First Book of harpsichord pieces in the nascent modernity of Frescobaldi.

Rosanne Philippens is used to creating her performance programs in solitude. For this solo album she took on the challenge of compiling a program involving audience participation. During her European concert dates, she tried out a collection of pieces. After each performance she asked the audience for feedback. As the concerts went on the program slowly came together. The booklet details the process and Insight is the final result. This is not your regular classical program - don't be surprised when a baroque piece from 1676 is cut in two or if the Sarabande of 20thcentury composer Enescu is embraced by the dances of Bach, all connected by improvised intermezzos.

Mendelssohn's first symphonic work scored for full orchestra, the Symphony Op.11 in C minor, paved the way for even greater examples of the genre he was soon to produce. The concert overture Die schรถne Melusine and the sparkling Piano Concerto No.2 rely on the type of orchestration and harmonic language that are best served when played on period instruments, as heard here. Devoid of the atmosphere of Romantic doom and gloom, nearly every page of both scores is marked by an exuberant cheerfulness, youthful drive and irrepressible energy in these splendid performances from fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout and the Freiburger Barockorchester led by Pablo HerasCasado.

London's musical life in the 1730s was centered around the towering figure of Handel. The Saxon composer also served as director; at the height of his fame, he surrounded himself with the finest London musicians, and was joined by many foreign composers to occupy the long breaks between the acts of his oratorios. Their musical interludes accompanied lavish dinners, during which Mr. Handel escaped from the pit to indulge his gourmet tendencies.

2 CD ONYX4196 SRP $29.98

Leonard Elschenboich is joined by pianist Alexi Grynyuk for a program of Beethoven's five cello sonatas, which span his three creative periods. The audacious Op.5 sonatas date from his early years in Vienna as a piano virtuoso and aspiring composer (179299). The great Op.69 sonata is from the same period that saw the composition of Symphonies Nos.4-8, the Violin Concerto, Mass in C and the String Quartets Op.59. The two Op.102 sonatas are from the cusp of the 'late' period. This is the time of the Symphony No.9, the Missa Solemnis, the great string quartets Op.127–135 and the last five piano sonatas. The cello and piano are truly equal partners in all these works, and Beethoven exploited the full range of the cello - placing great demands on the player. The Op.17 sonata from the 1790s was composed for horn and piano. The transcription is believed to be by the composer, or at least approved by him.

Fretwork AMNER Complete Consort Music Dublin Consort Singers, Mark Keane

John Amner worked for the greater part of his life at Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, first as a boy chorister and later as informator choristorum. Although not a 'celebrated' composer of the Renaissance era, the music in Amner's Sacred Hymnes shows that he was capable of writing in a number of styles from three-voice conzonets to elaborate consort anthems. Amner has been seldom recorded, and Fretwork's meticulously and lovingly curated album represents an important addition to the understanding of both the composer and the provincial religious music scene in England in the first half of the 17th century.
