Recorded in just one month, Circa Waves renew their blossoming co-producing relationship with Alan Moulder (Foals, The Killers) for an album that's creatively unshackled and refuses to stay still. What's It Like Over There? fuses the visceral thrill of rock music with a slick pop sound, brimming with themes of modern ennui, emotional fragility and the inside-outs and upside-downs of relationships. While the anthemic "Movies" will appeal to the band’s long-standing fanbase, the likes of "Sorry I’m Yours" and "Be Somebody Good" see Circa Waves experiment with a new progressive sound that will surprise and delight in equal measure. A union of emotional depth and intricate songcraft, What’s It Like Over There? will become an album their fans can't live without. Circa Waves have embraced the mindset that they’re allowed to create whatever they want and the results are stunning.

Lowly Hifalutin

A willingness to turn their backs on accepted frames of practice, for both recordings and performances, has characterized Lowly since their formation in 2014 at the music academy in Aarhus, Denmark. An inquisitive spirit drives the quintet's second album, Hifalutin, which brims with suggestive discoveries from its title onwards. Defined as "pompous" and "larger than life", hifalutin is also antonymic to Lowly. However you take it, Hifalutin is luminous modern pop at its most delicate and robust, assertive and open-ended.

Woodstock, New York-based singer-songwriter Hannah Cohen’s third album, Welcome Home, displays a new level of confidence and comfort. Taking her time with the songs, she wrapped herself in the fulfilling quiet of a new home, and a new creative partnership with Sam Evian. Folk and R&B influences blend with vocal-powered pop production, electronic accents, and bursts of pulsing guitar, bass and drum energy. Welcome Home is almost brutally honest in its self-examination, as Cohen couches truths in velvet-lush settings. Her remarkably evocative voice is surrounded by dreamy, swooning incantations, from the rippling “This Is Your Life” and the slow-burning, forthright statement of “All I Want,” to the soul swagger of “Get in Line” and dramatic vocal leaps of “Wasting My Time.” Echoes of soul enchanters such as Carrie Cleveland (an early touchstone for Cohen and Evian), Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers and their friend and sometime collaborator Nick Hakim blend with the reflective shadings of forebears such as Carole King and Harry Nilsson.

Heavier, harder and weirder than their previous work, Stealing Sheep's Big Wows is filled with bold neon pop songs featuring rave percussion, steelpans, dreamy segues and breathy experiments. Taking shape over a period of nearly three years, they laid down the main body of the tracks either at home, or in their studio at Liverpool's Invisible Wind Factory. The band worked with various producers - including Marta Salogni (Bjork, MIA, Factory Floor), Andy Smith (Years & Years), Ash Workman (Christine & The Queens, Metronomy) and Joe Wills (video artist for Little Dragon) – and tried out different mixes and ideas to convey their messages. As well as composing with traditional instrumentation, in some cases they began the songwriting process solely on a computer. "We wanted the machine sounds to be juxtaposed against a full kit and bass guitar, which we tracked live to feel intentionally loose in places. We like the idea of placing robotic tech next to real life energy." Stealing Sheep have a broad range of influences – St. Vincent, Michael Jackson, The Knife, Kraftwerk, Drake, Little Dragon - but they remain so resolutely and richly themselves.

Acclaimed Spanish-born pianist and composer Nico Casal is already renowned for his scores, especially his work on 2016 Oscar-winning film Stutterer. For his debut album, Alone, he has composed the soundtrack of his own life. It all began in Casal's tiny bedroom in East London where, he slept, worked, and taught the piano. Struggling to survive against the expense and noise of the capital, the transition to start recording for himself began on a solitary Sunday following a difficult artistic and personal period. Trying to re-adjust following the success of Stutterer, he found himself weighed down by stress and an intense period of writer's block. Alone is the beginning of a new chapter in his life both as a musician and as a person.

TRANSGRESSIVE

Few artists loom larger in garage-rock legend than The Sonics. With their 1966 album BOOM, the pioneering band put the Pacific Northwest scene on the map and cemented their place as rock heroes to the generations that followed. Danny Lee Blackwell's Night Beats, and an arsenal of ace musicians, give proper homage to their musical forbearers with this recording of BOOM in its entirety. While injecting their own brand of earth-quakin' soulshakin, maximum R&B, Night Beats maintain the original spirit of songs like “Cinderella,” and “Don't You Just Know It,” and perform a particularly unhinged version of “Louie Louie”.

Les Siècles FAURÉ Requiem Roxane Chalard (soprano), Mathieu Dubroca (baritone), Ensemble Aedes, Mathieu Romano

Written between 1887 and 1890, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem is among the best-loved pieces in the choral repertory. Traditionally, requiems are serious, prayerful laments for the dead. Fauré’s was altogether different. In place of the usual somber mood, his is noted for its calm, serene and peaceful outlook. The composer revised and expanded the work several times, but it is the original version that is performed here using period instruments and performance practices. This sublime recording, featuring Ensemble Aedes and Les Siècles led by Mathieu Romano, also includes Poulenc's Figure Humaine and Debussy's Trois Chansons.

Les Talens Lyriques & Christophe Rousset COUPERIN Concerts Royaux

Couperin's four Concerts Royaux were published in 1722 as a supplement to his third anthology of harpsichord pieces. While the score doesn't mention any instrumentation, we know the composer envisaged them as ensemble pieces for a mixed consort of instruments. This is how they were performed at the Sunday concerts at Versailles organized by Madame de Maintenon for Louis XIV between 1714 and 1715. 18th Century music specialist and baroque conductor Christophe Rousset leads Les Talens Lyriques in majestic versions of these well-named royal concerts.

Jordi Savall BACH St. Mark Passion La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Le Concert des Nations

Bach's St. Mark Passion was based on a text by Christian Friedrich Henrici and created using existing works. It was first performed in Leipzig in March 1731 and then revised for the Holy Week of 1744. The autograph score is lost, but recent musicological research shows that some pieces like the Funeral Ode BWV198 or an aria from the Cantata BWV 54 had been recycled. Every performance is thus a reconstruction by the performing artist. Jordi Savall offers his own vision, graced with a subtle chiaroscuro, and suffused with serenity and meditation.

Violinist Rachel Podger presents the first recording of Bach's Cello Suites on violin. Bach had a habit of recycling his own compositions for different instruments and different uses. The examples are endless; concertos appearing as sinfonias in cantatas, or concertos for violins turned into harpsichord concertos. Podger, who has spent a fair bit of time coaching cellists, both modern and baroque alike, found herself playing along to demonstrate various points. "I started catching myself playing some of the movements I particularly loved while warming up, and realizing that it was actually possible to play them on the violin, and to find a special expressive vocabulary at the higher pitch."

Frederick the Great is known to have composed one hundred and twenty-one flute sonatas, four flute concertos, a symphony, various arias and an overture. The king's love of music was real and genuine, and he desired and ensured that others should enjoy it in the same way. As a performer he was probably one of the most distinguished amateurs ever. As a composer he wrote nothing eminent or really original, though some pieces exuded a certain beauty and charm. This program from Florilegium focuses on the extraordinary talent of the musicians and composers he surrounded himself with at court. From Bach and Quantz to Benda and Graun, these luminaries of the 18th century were all brought together by one of the greatest musical patrons that ever lived.

Commissioned for the Good Friday service at Oratorio de la Santa Cueva in Cådiz, Spain, Haydn's Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross was published in 1787. It is a remarkably forwardlooking work, employing a wide range of tonalities and featuring a stylistic freedom reminiscent of Beethoven. The composer adapted it several times, first for string quartet and later as an oratorio. He also approved a version for solo piano. Ensemble Resonanz was founded in 1994 by members of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. One of the world’s leading chamber orchestras, the group's musicians bridge the gap between tradition and the present time.

Benjamin Alard BACH Complete Works for Keyboard Vol.2

In this second installment of the complete keyboard works, Benjamin Alard demonstrates with splendid eloquence how invaluable the young Bach’s north German experience proved to be. His attentive examination of the works of the great organ masters and his craving for all kinds of music significantly broadened the stylistic foundations of his keyboard writing. The wide range of works presented here, complemented by pieces by Buxtehude, Reinken and Pachelbel, illustrates in exemplary fashion the power of a master in the making.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier is the only composer of the age of Louis XIV to have distinguished himself so remarkably in the genre of the ‘sacred history’: he wrote more than thirty such works, all composed after his residence in Italy. Sébastien Daucé and the Ensemble Correspondances have carefully extracted from this outstanding corpus a number of gems that reflect both his experience in Rome (probably studying with Carissimi, the master of the oratorio) and the humanist concerns of an entire period. Like a miniature opera, each piece relates an exemplary destiny, including several strong-willed women (Judith, Cecilia, Mary Magdalene) and a deep friendship put to the test (Mors Saülis and Jonathæ). The CD set includes a bonus DVD.

The third Elgar album from Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra brings together three masterpieces. In the South, a vibrant and colorful depiction of the southern Italian coast, the Serenade for String Orchestra, and the Variations on an original theme, better known as the Enigma Variations. Elgar's breakthrough masterpiece was conceived in 1898 during a moment of dispirited idleness. He had come home exhausted from a day of violin teaching and was absent-mindedly extemporizing at the piano when his wife, Alice, called out: "Edward, that’s a good tune." What Elgar's fingers had stumbled upon were in fact hints or fragments of a melody, each starting after the first beat of the bar – ideal for variation treatment.
