NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS
The Capitalist Blues, Leyla's McCalla's second album for Jazz Village, is a powerful, personal commentary on the divided sociopolitical climate in the United States. It is a message of hope, with songs that focus on fighting the injustice happening around us. Myth Of A Man is Night Beats’ fourth studio album. Written during a particularly destructive period of the band, the album is populated by fallen angels, wanderers and vindictive lovers. Mystery Hour, Pavo Pavo’s second album, was written as band members Oliver Hill and Eliza Bagg were separating after a six-year relationship. Fever, Balthazar’s fourth album, is honest, playful and the band’s most cohesive effort to date. Go Dark’s début album Neon Young features a punkedged Brutalism that conjures visions of futuristic dystopia. A classical upbringing and a fondness for jazz come to the fore on the intoxicating self-titled debut album by RYD, aka North London producer and songwriter Ryan Downie. Mercury Prize nominee Ed Harcourt’s eighth studio album, Beyond The End, presents a soft-spoken yet emotionally loquacious group of piano-led instrumentals. Jordi Savall’s latest musicological project explores the great explorer Ibn Battuta’s significance in the Muslim world. Stile Antico’s In a Strange Land collects sacred music by Elizabethan Catholic composers living in exile. Justin Doyle and RIAS Kammerchor offer an album devoted entirely to Benjamin Britten. Berlioz is the focus of two new releases by key harmonia mundi artists. François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles performs Les Nuits d’été and Harold in Italy, and pianists Jean-François Heisser and Marie-Josèphe Jude perform a transcription of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. Highlights from Hyperion’s new releases include the Utah Symphony and Thierry Fischer performing Saint-Saëns, Garrick Ohlsson playing late piano works of Brahms and cellist Natalie Clein performing cello sonatas by Clarke and Bridge. Other noteworthy releases this month include the Concentus Musicus Wien performing Schubert’s 'Unfinished' Symphony, the Freiburger Barockorchester performing Corelli’s Concerti Grossi, and Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques playing François Couperin’s Les Nations.

Inspired by the divided sociopolitical climate in the United States, Leyla's McCalla's album The Capitalist Blues explores the psychological and emotional effects of living in a society where money is king, and the poor are left to fend for themselves. Despite the pessimism and cynicism the album's title evokes, these songs focus on recognizing that while we may feel overwhelmed by the injustice happening around us, we must always resist the temptation to be overcome by it. The Capitalist Blues is a clear musical departure from the folk approach of McCalla's first two critically-acclaimed albums. Comprising mostly original songs and increasingly steeped in the music of her adopted home of New Orleans and her ancestral home of Haiti, McCalla's songs span the musical spectrum from New Orleans traditional jazz to Zydeco to Haitian Rara.

Fronted by Texan native Danny Lee Backwell, Myth Of A Man is Night Beats' fourth studio album. While Blackwell has always fed off the musical legacy of his Texas roots, Myth Of A Man has him pulling from the surrogate wellspring of Nashville, Tennessee. It was there that he worked with the eminent Dan Auerbach, and a murderer’s row of battle-worn session musicians. Written during a particularly destructive period for the band, the album is populated by fallen angels, blood-sucking wanderers, and vindictive lovers. But the character most present is Blackwell himself. "Myth Of A Man can be summed up as a personal display of vulnerability and guilty conscience," he explains, "Destroying the mythos of what it means to live and function in society." With its bold steps forward, Myth Of A Man serves as both a takedown and reintroduction of the band as we know it — the strongest evidence that you’ll never be able to pin Night Beats down.

Pavo Pavo is the recording project of Oliver Hill and Eliza Bagg. Mystery Hour, their second album was written as the two were separating after a six-year relationship. The album began as a means to process the breakup and became a feedback loop, influencing the alchemy of their separation process and informing their new roles in each other’s lives. The tone is set by the opening title track, a tightly built pop song driven by orchestra and choir into a celestial fadeout: I realize love is to see every side of you / but mon cheri I'm designed to be unsatisfied. "Mystery Hour" is the album's sole co-write. The remainder songs came from Oliver in his apartment in the few months after Eliza moved out. From around 25 of his demos, the two would get together at the home studio to add and flesh out ideas, Eliza singing Oliver's words back to him. At the heart of the music is the openness with which the duo continues to sing together, revealing their unshakeable friendship. The record is a meditation on relationships from different angles.
It's clear from the opening notes of the album's first and title track "Fever" that Balthazar have changed, not least due to their individual musical pursuits over the past few years. Opening with a rolling languid bass riff, "Fever" unfurls into a slinky sunset jam, a swooping string motif adding drama to the funky bustle that fanfares the five-piece into new territory with their fourth album. Honest, playful and underpinned with a carefree abandon from two extraordinary songwriters, Balthazar has fashioned their most cohesive album to date.

Stile Antico In a Strange Land - Elizabethan Composers in Exile
The court of Queen Elizabeth I dealt harshly with supporters of the old Catholic religion. Torn between obedience and conscience, some of England’s most talented musicians – Philips, Dering and Dowland – chose a life of exile abroad. Others chose to remain in spiritual isolation in England, comparing themselves to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. Amongst them were Robert White, whose five-part Lamentations are one of the glories of English music of any age, and William Byrd, whose anguished Catholic music is referenced in Shakespeare’s enigmatic poem "The Phoenix and the Turtle", vividly set by Huw Watkins especially for Stile Antico.

Les Siècles & François-Xavier Roth BERLIOZ Harold en Italie, Les Nuits d’été Stéphane Degout (baritone), Tabea Zimmermann (viola)
A new aesthetic calls for new forms: such is the challenge the composer set for himself in the two works presented here. In Les Nuits d’été, Berlioz pioneered - well before Mahler and Ravel - the song cycle for voice and orchestra. In Harold in Italy, scored for large orchestra and solo viola, he experimented with the symphonic genre. These period-instrument performances by François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles feature violist Tabea Zimmermann and vocalist Stéphane Degout, heard here in the composer’s own version of Les Nuits d’été for baritone.

Ensemble Organum & Marcel Pérès Compostela - Ad Vesperas Sancti Iacobi
CD HMO8905301 SRP $13.98
Since the ninth century, the routes to Santiago de Compostela leading to the sanctuary of St. James have attracted countless pilgrims and exercised a potent mystique. What has received less attention is the music originally sung during the services in honor of the saint. Thanks to Marcel Peres’s in-depth study of the Codex Calixtinus, preserved at the Cathedral of Santiago, this recording can present a reconstruction of the musical gems contained in the rare twelfth-century manuscript which attests to multiple stylistic influences encountered on this indispensable and all-embracing pilgrimage.
Ensemble Organum & Marcel Pérès Le Chant des Templiers - Chant of the Templars
Long an object of fascination, the Knights Templar left behind few documents related to the musical activities of their order. Nevertheless, with the drive of a keen musical archaeologist, Marcel Pérès and his Ensemble Organum were able to reconstruct the oldest of the sources: a rare manuscript dating from the middle of the twelfth century and originating at the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the site at which the rituals of the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitaller initially took shape.
