Gwenno Le Kov

Written entirely in Cornish, Le Kov is an exploration of the individual and collective subconscious, the myths and drolls of Cornwall, and the survival of Britain's lesser known Brythonic language. As one of the language's few fluent speakers, Gwenno felt a duty to make her second album entirely in Cornish. She wanted to document a living language while exploring her identity and the endless creative possibilities of a tongue that has a very small surviving artistic output, despite having been around for at least 15 centuries. Evoking the music of her childhood – Brenda Wootton, Alan Stivell, BUCCA – along with Broadcast, The United States of America, White Noise and Serge Gainsbourg, Le Kov is both shimmering and tarnished, rust mingled with barnacles, moss entwined with weathered rope.

Raf Rundell Stop Lying

While taking its cues from Raf Rundell’s gloriously eclectic 2016 Selfie Boy mini-album, Stop Lying is a huge step forward. Sonically, this record is both supremely confident and brilliantly consistent. From the sunny side up swing of "Every Morning" to the ultradisco Ric Flair-esque knock 'em down swag of "Sweet Cheeks", it's the musical story of modern day London mapped out. In this city, all worries, stresses and inevitable releases are pumped through a decent pair of headphones. "Falling Out" sounds like the Pet Shop Boys lost on the floor at Sink the Pink and "In Control" a beatless Blockheads workout, while the Cure-in-space lament of "Kinder Nature" is a plea for a better way of interaction. Less lying, maybe.

Bella Union introduces brand new group Creep Show, which brings together John Grant and the dark analogue electro of Wrangler (Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire, Phil Winter and Benge) to create Mr Dynamite - a debut album packed with experimental pop and surreal funk. Recorded in Cornwall with a lifetime’s collection of drum machines and synthesizers assembled by Benge and explored by every member of Creep Show, there’s a real sense of freedom in the shackles-off grooves, channeling the early pioneering spirit of the Sugarhill Gang through wires and random electric noise. This sense of adventure is also part of the interplay between the two vocalists, John Grant and Stephen Mallinder, who switch between oblique wordplay and sinister humor as Phil Winter and Benge continue to manhandle the machines. However, Creep Show is much more than the sum of its parts. It’s almost as if the four band members and their machinery were possessed by another force, and it’s a spirit that wants to dance.

Verneri Pohjola & Mika Kallio Animal Image

Animal Image is the soundtrack album to a poetic documentary about the infinite relationship between man and animal. Edited to an improvised score by Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and percussionist Mika Kallio, the movie depicts nature-photographer and writer Heikki Willamo's journey to the landscape of the post ice-age northern wilderness to explore man's ancient relationship to his prey and Willamo's personal encounters with the inhabitants of the northern woods. The Finnish forest is a place like nowhere else - a place of dreams and imagination, an ancient place where its denizens live in the shadows. Verneri and Mika’s music is still, quiet, intimate and absorbing, like the forest listening.

The Gloaming took shape in 2011 when Irish master musicians Martin Hayes, Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh and singer Iarla Ó Lionáird (ex-Afro Celt Sound System) teamed up with two Americans – innovative Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill and NYC pianist/ producer Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman -- in a bold experiment. It yielded the group a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, a #1 chart hit in Ireland, and an unprecedented 17 consecutive sold-out concerts at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. This first live album features performances of stunning artistry from what have become annual residencies for the sought-after ensemble, whose busy solo schedules rarely align for their always sold-out touring. Known for his work with St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, Father John Misty and more, Bartlett laces dramatic texture throughout with his dark, edgy playing. Never reiterating the traditions of Irish music, The Gloaming come at it askance with spellbinding skill, shining revelatory new light on something old and treasured.

Drumming was the piece that launched the Colin Currie Group, a virtuoso ensemble of musicians hand-picked by Currie. Formed in 2006 for a performance at the BBC Proms celebrating the 70th birthday of Steve Reich, the group specializes in the American composer’s work. This recording was made possible by a crowdfunding campaign - which Reich enthusiastically endorsed saying, "It will be, I am sure, the best recording of Drumming ever made!" Dating from 1971, Drumming is an epic work for nine percussionists, two vocalists and a piccolo player, and employs Reich’s trademark phasing technique. Over four connected parts, the composer explores different instrumental groups, first focusing on bongo drums, then marimbas and glockenspiels before the complete ensemble comes together for the piece’s climax.

Nikolaj Znaider MOZART Violin Concertos Nos.4 & 5 London Symphony Orchestra

Nikolaj Znaider performs at the highest level as both conductor and virtuoso violin soloist, and for this album, the first of two releases exploring all five Mozart violin concertos, he directed the London Symphony Orchestra from his instrument, the "Kreisler" Guarnerius "del Gesu" 1741. Whilst Mozart’s five violin concertos were all written when he was a teenager, there is no denying that the young composer's growth in confidence and maturity is audible. A step up from his third, Mozart's Violin Concerto No.4 allows the instrument to take the lead, with the orchestra providing a supporting role. Widely considered the most 'grown up' of his violin concertos, Mozart's Violin Concerto No.5 finishes with a spirited rondo, its solo's leaping notes and exotic ornamentation leading to its nickname, "Turkish."

Choir of King's College, Cambridge BYRD Motets Stephen Cleobury

One of the most celebrated English composers of the Renaissance, William Byrd wrote Latin sacred music throughout his professional career, despite the fact that such pieces were banned from being used in church. The motets on this recording are presented in the order in which they appear in the pre-Reformation church year, beginning with Advent. The remarkable range of form, texture and color in Byrd's music allows Stephen Cleobury to showcase the voices of the choir, as well as the legendary acoustics of the chapel, in all their glory. Most of the motets are presented here performed by the whole choir, with a small selection – including the rousing Vigilate and Byrd’s masterpiece Ne irascaris, Domine – performed by the Choral Scholars of the choir.

In Handel's time, it was customary to include instrumental interludes during performances of large compositions such as oratorios and operas. The three Concerti a due cori (concertos for strings and two groups of wind instruments) are fine examples of works written for this purpose. The musical content of all three concertos is drawn from previous, often well-known compositions (Messiah, etc.) in a manner that some today might call arranging, but in the Baroque, was considered perfectly normal and acceptable. These boisterous and attractive "crowdpleasers" are heard here in all their glory in performances by the superb Freiburger Barockorchester.
