When I first read the description of the Community Development project in Ethiopia on eMi’s website, my reaction was: “I want to be part of this!” But I quickly dismissed that thought since I have already gone on my planned and budgeted eMi trip in June. Over the next week or so, however, I kept returning to the project website and read about it over and over again. The project is located near Gera, Ethiopia on a 750-acre site at an elevation of 6500 feet above sea level in Western Ethiopia, known for its coffee production. The vision to provide a safe haven and community for 250 or more persecuted Christian families took shape in 2009 when a Western minister purchased the piece of rugged mountain land and formed a company to establish an agricultural center. More than a business endeavor, the site will become a livable and sustainable community for Ethiopian believers as they break from previous belief systems and traditions and experience great economic and social suffering.

“The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.” -Haggai 2:9 Haggai spoke to the remnant of Israel about the coming glory of the temple and encouraged them to finish the restoration . He reminded them that God did not forget about them and was still working among and caring for them. Similarly, the persecuted Ethiopian Christians can hear the same message that God is still working and is providing for them through us. It is our hope and prayer that His peace will dwell in the community to come and our call to bring about His peace in tangible ways.
Need as such was illustrated in March this year when thousands of Christians were forced to flee their homes after Muslim extremists set fire to roughly 50 churches and dozens of Christian homes.
