What is Rainbow of Heroes?

Rainbow of Heroes is a walk to benefit the Duke Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplant Family Support Program (PBMT). It commemorates and celebrates all Duke PBMT patients and their families. In honor of our inpatient unit, 5200, we will walk 5200 yards around the track at the Duke Center for Living. As we walk around the track carrying balloons with transplanted children’s names on them, we celebrate the sense of community that comes from being a part of the PBMT family. Our time together also includes refreshments, music, and activities for everyone.

Take a Step for a Hero

Walk with us on May 7th to help raise money for the volunteer-based Family Support Program, whose mission is to care for, to serve, and to lighten the burden of the PBMT community through a comprehensive array of resources and services.

Build a Team

We know many families get through transplant by building a team of support. Get your whole school or community group involved. Build a team to celebrate life, honor loved ones, and raise money to support PBMT families. Educate your team about transplant and the various resources needed for families.

Raise Contributions

Set a fundraising goal. Start collecting today, asking family and friends for their support. A good way to raise pledges is through the use of a personal website or solicitation through email. A sponsor form may be downloaded from our website. If you are unable to participate on May 7th, but would still like to make a donation, either visit our secure website or mail a check. Please indicate the name of your team. Make checks payable to: Duke University Credit card donations can be (Please write 11RH in memo space) made on our secure website at:

Support Families

Every contribution, whatever the amount, makes a difference! For example: • $100 supplies one week of groceries for a family • $250 purchases 10 books of parking passes for families • $750 provides art supplies for group activities for a year • $2000 provides one month of rent at a local apartment

FAMILIES Earn Rewards

All Walk participants who raise $100 or more will receive a 2011 Rainbow of Heroes commemorative tshirt, which includes the names of patients transplanted between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011. Last year, our top three fundraisers raised over $33,000 for the Family Support Program! Thank you to AlphaMed Press, Team Merrymaid, and Team Emma Caroline for your support and hard work.  This year’s top three fundraisers will receive a special gift that commemorates their fundraising efforts.

Raff le & Bucket Auction

Don’t miss your opportunity to win a unique afghan knitted by Dr. Kurtzberg and several members of the PBMT team or the 2011 PBMT quilts! In addition, we will have a “bucket auction,” which provides participants the chance to win unique prizes. Stop by the tent on Walk day to purchase your tickets. Need not be present to win.

Family Support Program: Serving Duke PBMT Families! Undergoing a blood or marrow transplant can be one of the most terrifying and lonely experiences a family may ever endure. The life and death struggle affects not only the patient, but the entire family. The necessity to embrace families during this time is vital to their social, emotional, and financial well-being. The Family Support Program (FSP) was founded in 1997 as a partnership, born through the efforts of families who experienced transplant at Duke and the PBMT staff. FSP facilitates over 25 active

programs and services, including daily activities for patients (e.g. bingo, art, and music therapy), programs for caregivers (e.g. massage therapy, salon day, community meals), volunteers (Best Buddies, Rainbow Volunteers), and financial assistance for lodging, transportation, and food. Our program is self-supporting; we are not funded by any hospital or organization. We exist only through the contributions of caring people like you. We appreciate your support as we seek to assist families and fully address their needs during the journey of transplant.

SUPPORT Rainbow of Heroes Wall K The Rainbow of Heroes Wall will be decorated with the names, stories, photographs, signatures, and memoirs of all patients and families from the Duke PBMT community who send or bring items. Our wall honors the incredible strength, indelible courage, and unconditional love that thrives in our program.
