RELEVANT Media Group
900 N Orange Ave Winter Park, FL 32789 (407) 660-1411 To Whom It May Concern, My name is Natalie Franz and I am interested in being selected as a designer of Relevant Magazine. I believe I am very qualified for this position and have a great amount of experience with design, photography, typography, editing, and meeting deadlines. My sophomore and senior years of high school, I applied myself to many jobs and responsibilities in these areas for my high school yearbook: The Panther. My sophomore year, I was a staff member which consisted of interviewing, designing, writing, photographing, and editing several published spreads. My senior year, I was a section editor in which I mentored younger students, designed, photograph, and wrote content that was published in the yearbook. I also edited several pages as well as oversaw work on the index of our yearbook. Working on Paola High School’s yearbook for two years of my high school career taught me a lot about working independently, communicating effectively, meeting deadlines, and appearing professionally to those around me. I have also become extremely familiar with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. I believe my experience and knowledge would be an excellent asset to your staff. I appreciate your consideration for your staff. I would like to meet with you personally however so I can express my capabilities to you directly. I also attached a resume so you may evaluate my experience for yourself. I look forward to hearing back from you. Respectfully yours,

Natalie Franz Enclosed: resume

Reflection #1

I

In my opinion, the most significant piece of work I created this year was the “Meet One Student” secondary coverage box. This secondary coverage piece provides for a picture of the student and several pieces of information relating to a certain skill the student has. I am proud of this piece because I believe it covers a variety information and helps the viewer get to know the student highlighted in the secondary coverage. Another reason I am proud of this

piece is because it was a challenge to create. Not only did I accidentally delete my most detail-oriented piece and have to remake it, I made several edits to it in the process in search for a cohesive piece. There are several components to this secondary coverage that must fit together just right or it does not look unified. Finding design elements that worked together perfectly for this piece was challenging but in the end, well worth it. It was added to the Library and was used in several places throughout the book.

Reflection #2

I

I think the journalism spread, my first spread of the year, could still use work. It was my pioneer spread, so to speak, and helped me experiment and finalize the design elements we chose for this year’s book. This spread helped me realize what worked and what didn’t work when it came to our design and helped me grow as a designer. At the time I completed this spread’s design, I was happy with it but I was still unexperienced at the time. Because of my inexperience, there are many things I think

Reflection #3

could be improved. I forgot to align the subhead to the headline and I think the secondary coverage on page 38 looks cramped. I also think the “By the numbers” secondary coverage on page 39 could be greatly improved. There is a lot of awkward white space around it and I think it would have been a more effective piece had I made the numbers decrease from most to least. I also should have tried to make the text that corresponded to the number align to the number. Looking back on this piece now, I know I would do a lot differently now because of the knowledge I now have.

Photo 1

I

I am proud of this photo because I was able to capture the emotion of the cheerleader in front. I also like the composition of this photo and am proud of the depth of field I got with my 35 mm lens. The only thing I don’t like about this photo is the temperature. I think it is too yellow and warm. This photo can be located at J:Pictures 2013-2014/Pep Rally/Natalie 11-6-13

Photo 2

I

I like this photo because there is a lot of emotion in it. The subject of the picture looks extremely happy to be taking video of the people at the parade. I also like how much of his face you can see. The only thing I don’t like about this photo is the lighting. The subject is facing away from the sun and so he is cast in shadow. This photo can be located at J:Pictures 2013-2014/Fall Homecoming/Parade Natalie Franz 10-4-13

Photo 3

I

I like this photo because of the composition. The subjects are in clear focus while the background is out of focus. All the attention is placed on the subjects and there is minimal distraction. One thing I don’t like about his photo is how Anna’s face is cast in shadow. This photo can be located at J:Pictures 2013-2014/Drama Club/Plays/ Love Goes to Press/Natalie Franz 11-21-13

Design of the Year Yearbook Spread

Spread 1 Reflection #6

A

At semester, I set two goals for myself and hoped to achieve these goals by the end of the year. My first goal was to improve as a designer and my second was to stay on deadline. My first goal was easy for me to achieve since I am constantly working in InDesign or Photoshop. Learning new things as I went along was not only easy, but it was fun. I am very happy with the new things I’ve learned this semester and am

excited to use them in my future at college. My second goal of staying on deadline has not been as easy as the first. Being a senior, I have had many others things going on while preparing for the end of the school year. I have had several other projects and papers due and have put my yearbook deadlines on the back burner. Although my spreads are still getting done on time, I am having trouble meeting the mini-deadlines. I hope to eliminate this problem in the future by managing my time better.

This spread was published in the yearbook on pages 44 and 45. I like this spread because of its clean design and would like to enter it for the Yearbook Spread Design of the Year. One thing I like about this spread is how the dominant photo draws you into the story.

Spread 2 This spread was published on pages 50 and 51 of the yearbook. I like this spread because of how organized it is. Everything has its own neat place on the spread. I would like to enter this spread for the Yearbook Spread Design of the Year.

Spread 3 This spread was published on pages 22 and 23 of the yearbook. I like this spread mainly because of the layout of the photo cluster. Everthing is very clean-cut and organized well. I would like to enter this spread in the Yearbook Spread Design of the Year.
