Although I am not returning to the staff next year there are a few different jobs I would’ve applied for. If I had applied for a job for next year I would’ve chosen between the senior ads editor or the sports editor. The senior ads editor is very hard to apply for because so many people want that job but it is very special. Your job is to put all the senior pages together and it can be hard to make it all look together. I think this would’ve been a good job to apply for because not only do you get to know the seniors better but you also don’t have to work on any spreads because you’re working the whole time on it! Although you have to start right away and it can be very stressful when the students didn’t get senior pictures taken or get their quotes in. Trust me I know. I had to travel around the school grounds with Kenzie taking senior pictures for people. I would also apply for the sports editor for many reasons. The sports editor isn’t actually noticed enough. Many people in yearbook just think about the senior ads editor and the editor-in-chief. All the editors are equally important but I think this one just sounds really fun because I love sports. To be the sports editor you have to have all the stats of the games and teams. This can be very hard because you need to keep track of all the different sports and everything involved with it. But being the sports editor allows you to be caught up with the sports and you’ll know exactly what’s going on. Overall if I was doing yearbook next year I would want to apply for those jobs.

Objective: To bring fun, energy, and ideas to the staff

Self-Analytical Essay

I started journalism last year in 8th grade. I applied for the yearbook staff but I didn’t make the cut. Although I was sad something did turn out. A day later I was called down to the journalism advisors room along with about 9 other people. She told us that since there seemed to be potential in us. Then she told us that they had decided to start a newspaper staff. Being on the newspaper was very fun and was very different from this year in yearbook. I had always envied the yearbook people just because it seemed so fun to be able to work with the design and all the spreads. Although in middle school the journalism program didn’t go into depth at all. The yearbook didn’t have to edit pictures, write stories, edit spreads, or do many interviews. In newspaper we had to interview some and just take mug shots. The advisor did the editing and the stories were much easier to write. The newspaper staff met only on Thursdays and Fridays in seminar and yearbook met Monday-Wednesday. This year was very different from last year. I have learned so much in the past year. I have learned to take pictures, although I’m still the worst photographer in the world. I also have learned how to design spreads and the correct format to write stories. I still have a lot to learn but I feel like I have come a little farther as a “yerd.” I have also learned to work with deadlines. This class has helped me plan for other things. Time management is very important in anything you do although I am probably the biggest procrastinator. This class was very important and great to take and I am so glad I did. Although sometimes, most of the time, I was stressed with deadlines and I thought I was going to pull my hair out, I learned a lot that will help me in the future. One of the main things that is going to help me for the future is not being late! I had come across way to many times where I turned my photo deadline in late but it taught me a valuable lesson. It showed me that by not being prepared you face consequences, like a zero! I am very happy that Mrs. Chayer was lenient with me and waited a while before giving me a zero and I thank her for that! This lesson will help me in the future with college because then I will know what happens when you don’t get things done on time. But on a serious note I am proud of myself for sticking it through with this class because it prepared me for the struggles and stressful times that life has ahead of me.

Reflection #1

My best piece of work this year was the MIT story. I would consider this my best publication because it was the longest and had the most work and detail put into it. I although did not do it on my own. It was one of my first stories and I needed lots of help. Luckily I had Natalie Franz on my side. She helped me edit the entire store and whenever I had a writing block, which was very often, she told me the best way to carry out the story. This story was not easy at all to write. I think when you know a lot about the topic and are interested in it, it is very easy to write. Unfortunately, I am not interested in that type of thing so it was hard for me to get into it. Since I am not good at taking pictures writing was the only job I had left but Natalie was interested in that and helped me significantly. I consider myself a creative writer. I actually wrote a story that was nearly 30 chapters long. When I get an idea of a story I can just roll off the idea forever and writing just takes me to a whole new world. These stories are hard to get into though but with good help you can get into it. The process of writing the story was stressful because no one would answer their interviews but in the end I was very proud of the ending piece.

The Importance of Computer Skills for Future Careers

Kaiser Mittenburg, junior, took several computer classes during his high school career. He said having computer skills was very important. “Most people say it’s already a necessity,” Mittenburg said. “In a few years, you probably won’t be able to survive without them.” Mittenburg planned to pursue computer engineering after high school and expected to use all of what he learned from his classes. Nick Dreyer, sophomore, also planned to pursue computer engineering as a career. Dreyer was in the Multimedia and Photoshop classes. “The skills that I plan to use are editing images and animating,” Dreyer said. Dreyer said he believed society was moving into a more computer-based age. “Everything is being made so it can be used on the computer,” Dreyer said. Senior Katie Jones said computer skills were important to have because every job required knowledge about computers “More people are turning to computers to get their work done for them,” Jones said. Jones intended to use skills such as working with numbers and money management. Jones had learned how to navigate through the different programs from computer classes and planned to use it as a skill in the future. Business/Computer teacher Pam Fette said computer skills were essential and important for survival. “The classes are different today because they’re much more technical and complex,” Fette said. Fette also said willingness to learn was one of the most important things needed to prepare for future technological advances.

Piece That Needs Work Rough Draft

Minecraft Wiz My piece of publication that could use work is my secondary coverage story for the Creating Wonders spread. It was called Minecraft Wiz and it definitely needs work. When I started the story I was lucky that we were doing it on Natalie’s brother Zach so the information was easy to get. It had a lot of imagery but it almost didn’t make sense being in the story. I do however like how there was imagery in it. I learned that it is hard to do imagery in a story like this and you have to make it sound good. If I could go back and redo it I probably would want to make it longer and have more information about the person in the story. I think the problem was that I didn’t have enough information to work with, that’s why it was so short and weirdly typed. My overall feeling about it now is that it brought out my creative writing side out but it needs work.

Zach Franz turned the corner of his newly built coliseum just as a zombie creeper struck at him. He rapidly clicked the buttons on the controller to escape the evil creature. Unfortunately, the zombie caught up to him, leading his avatar to a depressing death. With a grunt of anger and disappointment, Franz turned off the Xbox and walked away. Franz, sophomore, had been playing this virtual game for a year and used his free time to build all sorts of creative things. “I like playing Minecraft because you can literally build anything” said Franz. By now he has made things from lord of the rings flowers to castles that take hours to make. “The only limits are you can only place one block at a time” said Franz. “You have to have a lot of patience for certain projects.”

I like this picture because it has great color. I just adore the colors of Lexie’s flowers. I also really like the fact that it is a vertical picture and they are less common than horizontal pictures in my opinon. But mainly I just like how the flower pops and Lexie’s shirt pops too.

I like this picture becuase it captured great emotion. I hate the fact that it is blurry and it focused on Bree’s phone. This picture was taken on the night of the banquet and Bree was obviously very excited about Grandma Prothe’s cinnamon rolls! I like this picture because of the leading lines. I like how the banner is leading into the light which is leading t the door. J:\Pictures 2013-2014\Cheerleading\Practice\Delaney Clemetson

I believe I was an asset to the yearbook staff this year. One reason I was an asset is that I brought creativity to the staff. My stories were fairly good and I feel like my imagination in my stories was good. Another reason that I think I was an asset was that I was dependable. If someone from another spread needed someone to interview for him or her, I could always help out. I also got the stories done. Not always on time if other members didn’t have their stuff done but I tried. I believe, when talking about commitment, that I was low on that factor. I feel like I could’ve had improved so much more in that subject. I am very disappointed that I didn’t try harder. I think part of the reason could be that I was not expecting this class to be this big of a commitment so it was hard to get into it. I don’t think that I had full commitment into, may 80%, just because I was always under pressure. And that is my honest opinion.

There were many troubles and hardships I faced this year being on the staff. One of the main problems I had was getting stuff done on a deadline, specifically photo deadlines! It seemed pretty often that when I would come in class I would find out a photo deadline was due! Another problem I faced often was lacking of other staff members. I’m not saying that I was perfect but there was a particular member that I got paired with twice for spreads and that person was horrible at getting stuff done on time. They always seemed distracted with another class. I mean this is a class too! In fact one time they had done an interview and still hadn’t typed it three weeks later. I had to do the story and they were expecting me to take on the responsibility and type it myself! This made me extremely frustrated because it cost me a grade as well! I did in fact learn from these situations. If I don’t know when things are going to be due, like photo deadlines, I can ask the teacher for a guideline. And if I come across a distracted staff member, I should be more assertive. I don’t believe that I handled these situations well. I should’ve learned to not continuously turn deadlines in late and I should’ve got on to the distracted staff member more and told them to get their stuff done.

My goals this semester were simple but I just seemed to have a lot of trouble accomplishing them. My goals were to take better pictures by going to more out of school events and to be on top of deadlines. At the beginning of the year I thought that meeting deadlines was going to be hard and boy was I right. As the year went on though I got a little used to it and was like “this isn’t so bad, why is everyone making such a fuss over it?” But now every time a deadline comes up I have a mental and/or emotional breakdown. Not very positive but I believe that I failed at both of these goals! I didn’t take much better pictures because I could never go to any of the after school events with my schedule. I did although capture some good emotion shots at the banquet! I didn’t really meet deadlines well either. With the baseball supplement spread, it was hard because my partner was always working on other homework like an English essay or gone at a track meet. They also never typed their interviews! But that’s not all their fault. I should’ve cracked down but I didn’t. I also was terrible at meeting photo deadlines (as mentioned several times before.) I didn’t meet those deadlines because I believe we weren’t warned ahead of time very well. I also think I didn’t make those deadlines because I always thought of different things to do. I didn’t have my priorities straight and plus I hate taking pictures.

I really like this picture becuase it would be great for a story. There are lots of storyies and spreads now that deal with scoail medai trends. Thsi shot has lots of emotion which is another reason why I love it. I also love the fact that the phone case really pops. J:\Pictures 2013-2014\Journalism\Banquet

Chelsea Wolsey, freshman, was a varsity starting player. “My proudest moment was actually when I got to start my first full game of varsity.” said Wolsey. Wolsey didn’t just play for varsity; she also played JV as well most of it being freshman players. She felt pressured to play as good as the upperclassmen yet she started varsity soccer games. Wolsey came into the season playing varsity expecting to be playing on the JV team. She couldn’t believe how many freshmen got to be on varsity let alone the team. But she didn’t mind all the freshmen because some of them were her closest friends and she played very well with them. Her opinion on team was that they had poor sportsmanship but they were working on that and overall they did pretty good. The coach, Clint Maynard, has a different perspective. “I think that having so many freshmen on the varsity team is exciting and nerve-racking because they have so much potential but it’s frustrating because they are young and will grow.” said Maynard. “The team could be better if there were some more experience, if they challenged the other teams, and had more confidence.” said Maynard I chose this story for another submission for the story of the year because it was really hard to not focus on the losing streak and it is also a pretty interesting story for being about soccer J:\2014 Panther\Staff Folders\Delaney Clemetson\stories

There are many things I believe we could do to improve as a staff. As mentioned, a lot names are misspelled in the book. This needs to be looked at a closer because people get offended if it’s their yearbook with them in it and their name is spelled wrong. I know I do because my name was spelled wrong on a spread and I’m on the staff! Another thing we could improve on is paying a lot more attention to our hit list! So many people were used was to many times. We need to recognize the people we haven’t used. I think it’s only fair if they are used once, not 20 times like some of the jocks. The last improvement I would suggest is if we get everyone skilled in every aspect. For example, I can’t take good pictures or design to save my life but I can write a pretty decent story. So if we made sure everyone was skilled in everything, it would be so much better and relief so much stress.
